  • I'm trying to grasp the concept of creating a program that uses a SQL Server database, but I'm used

    How can I make a program use a SQL Server database, and have that program work on whatever computer it's installed on. If you've been following my string of questions today, you'd know that I'm making an open source and free Help Desk suite for small and medium businesses. The client application. The client application is a Windows Forms app. On installation and first launch on every client machine, it'll ask for the address of the main Help Desk server. The server. Here I plan to handle all incoming help requests, show them to the IT guys, and provide WCF services for the Client application to consume. My dilemma lies in that, I know how to make the program run on my local machine; but I'm really stumped on how to make this work for everyone who wants to download and install the server bit on their Windows Server. Would I have to make an SQL Script and have it run on the MS SQL server when a user wants to install the 'server' application? Many thanks to all for your valuable time and effort to teach me. It's really really appreciated. :) Edit: To clarify, each business will have their server completely separate from me. I will have no access whatsoever to them nor will they be in any way connected to me. (I don't know why I should clarify this :P ) So, assuming the have ABSOLUTELY NO DATABASE SERVER installed; what can I do?

  • Is there any valid reason radians are used as the inputs to trig function in many modern languages?

    Is there any pressing reason trig functions should use radian inputs in modern programming languages? As far as I know radians are typically ugly to deal with except in three cases: (1) You want to compute an arc length and you know the angle of the arc and (2) You need to do symbolic calculus with trig functions (3) certain infinite series expansion look prettier if the input is in radians. None of these scenarios seem like a worthy justification for every programming language I am familiar with using radian inputs for Sin, Cos, Tangent, etc... The third one sounds good because it might mean one gets faster computations using radians (very slightly faster- the cost of one additional floating point multiplication ) , but I am dubious even of that because most commonly the developer had to take an extra step to put the angle in radians in the first place. The other two are ridiculous justifications for all the added obscurity.

    The following question is related to the question "Ruby Print Inject Do Syntax". My question is, can we insist on using do and end and make it work with puts or p? This works: a = [1,2,3,4] b = a.inject do |sum, x| sum + x end puts b # prints out 10 so, is it correct to say, inject is a class method of the Array class, which takes a block of code, and then returns a number. If so, then it should be no different from calling a function and getting back a return value: b = foo(3) puts b or b = circle.getRadius() puts b In the above two cases, we can directly say puts foo(3) puts circle.getRadius() so, there is no way to make it work directly by using the following 2 ways: a = [1,2,3,4] puts a.inject do |sum, x| sum + x end but it gives ch01q2.rb:7:in `inject': no block given (LocalJumpError) from ch01q2.rb:4:in `each' from ch01q2.rb:4:in `inject' from ch01q2.rb:4 grouping the method call using ( ) doesn't work either: a = [1,2,3,4] puts (a.inject do |sum, x| sum + x end) and this gives: ch01q3.rb:4: syntax error, unexpected kDO_BLOCK, expecting ')' puts (a.inject do |sum, x| ^ ch01q3.rb:4: syntax error, unexpected '|', expecting '=' puts (a.inject do |sum, x| ^ ch01q3.rb:6: syntax error, unexpected kEND, expecting $end end) ^ finally, the following version works: a = [1,2,3,4] puts a.inject { |sum, x| sum + x } but why doesn't the grouping of the method invocation using ( ) work in the earlier example?   • How do I know which include path will be used in PHP?

    When I run phpinfo() and look by the Configuration category under PHP Core, I see a directive titled include_path, with a local value and a master value. In this case, my local value is set to .: ./include: ../include: /usr/share/php: /usr/share/php/smarty: /usr/share/pear and my master value is set to .: /usr/share/php: /usr/share/pear: /usr/share/php/pear: /usr/share/php/smarty The reason I am trying to learn how this works is because there is a file in the system I am working on titled Smarty.class.php, which I'm sure sounds very familiar to anyone who uses Smarty Templating Engine. One of the PHP files has the following includes: require_once("Smarty.class.php"); require_once("user_info_class.inc"); The file user_info_class.inc is in the same directory as the file making the include, which makes perfect sense to me, and is the way that I've always referenced files. I decided that I wanted to open up the Smarty.class.php file and had assumed it would be in the same directory, but it was not. After doing a bit of digging, I discovered those php_ini variables, and was finally able to locate the file in the directory usr/share/php/smarty/. So it would seem that when making an include, it follows some sort of order between the Local and Master values for the include_path. Assuming that my deductions were correct thus far, can someone explain the order in which PHP searches for the files to be included?

  • Can the memory used by MKMapView be released some how?

    I am using an MKMapView in my iPhone application. When I load this view, the activity monitor instrument shows that the real memory of my App is increasing significantly. It keeps going up as you move the map around or zoom in and out. Once the View controller that loads this view is removed, the memory that was allocated due to the usage of the mapView does not get freed up. Is there something that can be done to get all this memory back?

Here's how it works: AJAX Request gets sent to PHP using GET (chat messages/logins/logouts) PHP fetches/modifies the XML file on the server PHP encodes the XML into JSON, and sends back JSON response Javascript handles JSON information (chat messages/logins/logouts) I want to eventually make this a larger-scale chatroom application. Therefore, I want to make sure it's fast and efficient. Was this a bad design choice? In this case, is switching between XML and JSON ok, or is there a better way?

  • Can hitTestPoint be used with local coordinates at all?

    In AS3 I have a game where a vehicle rotates to the direction of the cursor, but when it "moves", its sprite stays stationary in the middle of the stage while the map layer below it actually moves, causing the illusion of movement of the vehicle on the map. There are obstacles on the map that the vehicle cannot pass. The obstacles are in a movie clip that is a part of the map layer and move with it. hitTestPoint seems only to be able to check if the obstacle clip is touching points on the stage rather than points on the map, meaning that I cannot feed it the same coordinates I use to check the map boundaries, which are points on the map. I don't think I can use localToGlobal because the function I use to check obstacle collisions does not have access to a reference to the obstacle movie clip. Is there a way in these conditions to force hitTestPoint to use its local coordinate system on the map? I have included a diagram:

    1) If I am running a find and replace in SQL 2005 - what would be the regular expression to find tab and space sequences ( or space and tab sequences ) and replace them with just tab? 2) If I have a line which begins with a space - is there a regular expression to convert that leading space to a tab? 3) What would be the regular expression to remove all of the spaces before a CR/LF in a SQL statement? GPL and similar licenses are not non-commercial, but I don't want end up competing against software I wrote, so I can't use them. Are there non-commercial software licenses? Preferably some that are at least somewhat known. For know I thinking to use Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0. But Creative Commons don't recommend using their licenses for software, but using software specific licenses instead.

  • How can I generate a list of symbols used by a build product from a particular statically linked lib

    Say I have a visual studio project that builds a windows exe or dll from c++ source. The project statically links to several library (.lib) files. I would like to generate the subset of the available functionality in a particular .lib that the project actually links to. A very crude way to achieve this would be to remove the .lib from the linker input list. The error list on the build would then show me all the symbols that could not be found. Is there a better/proper way to generate this list, I'm happy with a solution that can be run as a custom build step in the project or one that runs against a built binary. I've looked at both the linker and dumpbin command line options but have not seen anything appropriate.
