• Setting density for Android game

  I am developing an Android game, in which a ball (bitmap) translates( is in motion). So I have provided motion equations for the ball. I have checked my app on Samsung galaxy S2 whose actual density is roundly 252 dpi, and It works fine on that. So my question is that Does these motions of bitmaps in surfaceView, depends on actual density of phone( i.e 252 dpi for S2) or generalized density(i.e 240 dpi). I am confused whether if I run this app on 235 dpi smartphone, So will it have the same performance of motion as it is on Galaxy S2( with 252 dpi) or it would be little slow ? Any help will be appreciated.

The advantages of code review before commit I've learned, mentor new hires try to prevent errors, failures, bad designs in early developing cycle learn from others knowledge backup if someone quits But I also got some bad experience, like low efficiency, some changes may be reviewed over days hard to balance speed and quality, especially for newbies some guy felt distrust As to post-review, I just knew little about this, but the most thing I worried about is the risk of losing control, people never review. • Which is the best non-java, dynamic, programming language to build attractive GUIs?

  I am well acquainted with java and groovy but somehow I am not intrigued by the performance or looks of swing based applications that are developed on the same. So I want to learn and know about THE best alternate dynamic programming language (coz I am looking for little bit of luxury while writing code by not willing to fiddle with pointers, memory handling, static typing difficulties etc) to develop attractive cross platform GUIs. To be precise, when I say attractive I mean support for elegant translucent windows and nicer components (not the flashy adobe stuff). Can you please suggest me a programming language that manages to fit into this?

• Ubuntu 12.04 wont install on Macbook

  I've installed Ubuntu on my Macbook before but something went wrong with the updater. So, I had to backup my HDD and format it and reinstall OS X Lion. But here's the thing: Ever since I re-installed my OS I've been trying to get Ubuntu back on the HDD. I partitioned it to 40 GB and set the file system to Ext4. I also recently created a swap partition too and it seems to install correctly. After i installed rEFIt it just has this cute little penguin sitting there. I rebooted and tried to go back to Ubuntu and the penguin still shows up but this time a black screen pops up and it asks me to insert a bootable device and press any key. I'm not sure why this is happening. This is probably the 5th time I've tried to install it. I've even used a different Ubuntu ISO but it still won't boot after the installation.

• SQL Server Data Tools–BI for Visual Studio 2013 Re-released

  Customers used to complain that the tooling for creating BI projects (Analysis Services MD and Tabular, Reporting Services, and Integration services) has been based on earlier versions of Visual Studio than the ones they were using for their other work in Visual Studio (such as C#, VB, and ASP.NET projects). To alleviate that problem, the shipment of those tools has been decoupled from the shipment of the SQL Server product. In SQL Server 2014, the BI tooling isn’t even included in the released version of SQL Server. This allows the team to keep up-to-date with the releases of Visual Studio. A little while back, I was really pleased to see that the Visual Studio 2013 update for SSDT-BI (SQL Server Data Tools for Business Intelligence) had been released. • Earliest use of Comments as Semantically Meaningful Things in a Program?

  In certain corners of the PHP meta-programming world, it's become fashionable to use PHPDoc comments as a mechanism for providing semantically meaningful information to a program. That is, other code will parse the doc blocks and do something significant with the information encoded in those comments. Doctrine's annotations and code generation are an example of this. What's the earliest (or some early) use of this technique? I have vague memories of some early java Design by Contract implementations doing similar things, but I'm not sure of those folks were inventing the technique, or if they got it from somewhere. Mainly asking so I can provide some historical context for PHP developers who haven't come across the technique before, and are distrustful of it because it seems a little crazy pants.

I'm doing TDD, using STL and Boost etc. I decided I need a change and about year ago started learning Ruby, few months ago I started playing with Rails, html5 and css. I don't know JavaScript(yet... I focus on Rails now) What can I expect on an interview for a Ruby on Rails backend developer job? How can I present myself to take advantage of my c++ experience? I'm on a senior level now and I can't start from intern position.

• Lost /boot partition

  Recently I installed Windows XP on my machine where I had only Ubuntu. The problem is that I had my /boot on a separate, 200 Mb partition at beginning of the hard-disk (the leftmost). Installing windows, it said that it can't write MBR because there's an unknown partition, so I formatted that partition as NTFS, and I could finally get windows installed. Now I want to restore that partition so I can use my Linux keeping both systems. Now should I install grub2 there, or it's OK by restoring partition data? If the first is the correct answer then provide me a little tutorial on installing it. Keep in mind that there was my /boot folder.

• Consolidating hotels data from various booking sites with different IDs or reference

  In one of my projects, I have data for hotels, and other booking sites are able to book this hotel. For example: Hotel A - Booking (ID = 4002), Expedia (ID = 123), Priceline (ID = 147) The three booking engines each uses their own Id to reference to Hotel A. I would need to check manually and make the right reference to the hotel. If I have 100,000 hotels, I have to check manually 300,000 (considering 3 booking sites) times? They might provide API, then I can cross check the name, address or latitude/longitude, but if they differ a little bit then I might give the wrong reference to the wrong hotel. I'm sure there are better ways to do this. There are many travel sites out there which do hotel price checking on many booking sites, but how do they do to make sure they are checking the right hotel on these booking sites? Anyone has any experience on this?

• After running updates in 10.10 Netbook Remix, Ralink 5390 Not working

  Additional Drivers still lists the driver. Reports it as being activated but not in use. Prior to running updates, wireless was working fine. Using Synaptic Package Manager, marked for reinstallation, reinstalled, rebooted. Back to the way things were. Little new to this side of the world. ;)

• SMS ad service for a php app.

  I am about to launch a website that allows the end user to get alerted as their bus approches the stop. The only problem was this is a little expensive as I'm paying about 5 cents per alert. I was thinking that if i added a short message something like "brought to you by acme co" at the end of the message I may be able to recoup cost without making my service a paid one. Anyone know of any SMS ad companies or how one would go about finding one. Google has failed me, probably searching for the wrong thing.

• One Week on New Servers and Everything is Great

  It has been a week since we moved our Geekswithblogs.net System to a new set of load balanced servers and everything has been going great.  I am so amazed at the performance of the new hardware.  On average, we only use less than 5% of the CPU at any given moments or the database and web servers.  I have seen a performance boost in page load as well, but I will have to confirm that with the statistics as they roll in.  This is all in preparation for a new community we are launching with some friends that we will be announcing shortly.  We will be launching a nice little contest for our bloggers as well. • script shortcut to open two files in gedit as sudo

  I want to double click a file on my desktop, and have two files be opened in gedit as sudo. Whenever I'm making a new website, I need to open /etc/hosts /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default.conf as sudo. At the moment this means opening the terminal, runing sudo gedit then opening each file manually. I want to streamline this part of my workflow. On windows I had wrote a little bash script which worked nicely. How can I do the same in ubuntu? So far in my searches I've come across ways of adding a shortcut to the file browser, and similar things, but not exactly what I want. I have tried creating a desktop launcher, but can't see how to make it run as sudo.

• Level Representation in a 2D Game

  I would like to create a 2D game, where a character should move on a stage/level. My stage would be static, constructed some little cubes, similar to the well-known Mario game: some of the elements should represent an element of the way where the character can step, but if the element is missing, the character should fall. My problem is, how to represent this programmatically? My first thought was to represent the stage with a vector, which should contain boolean elements, depending on the state of the element on the stage - if it's missing or not. But this means, I have to verify at my character's x or y position change if it has a stage element under or not (if not, to simulate the falling of the character) - I think it is not the best practice, it's not the beautiful solution. Can you help me with some advice, how to represent the stage?

• Some help understanding and modifying a 2D shader

  I have a similar question as the one posed here, except that I don't wish to use a 1D Color Palette. I simply wish to have it display 1 color of my choosing (red, for example). I plan to use this as a "shield" effect for a 2D ship. I also wish to understand how it works a little bit better, as I'll be the first to admit that shaders in general are not my strongest suit. I'm not asking for an overview of HLSL (as that is too broad of a subject), just an explanation of how this shader works, and the best way to implement it in a 2D game. Code examples would be ideal (even if they are theoretical) but if the answer is explained well enough, I might be able to manage with plain old text. This is also in XNA 4.0. Thanks in advance.

• Wordpress : Automatically transfer media files to Amazon S3

  I've been using VPS to host 7 Wordpress websites, most of them require big storage but very little RAM and traffic. So I'm thinking of moving the static files(uploads folder) content to Amazon S3 and I'm looking for the most viable solution to this. I want every website to have their own bucket and newly uploaded media files automatically uploaded to Amazon S3 without using plugin. I'm ok with cron job, for example the files were uploaded first to my server, then transferred to S3 and deleted from my server every 24 hour. Or is there any way for me to change the default upload directory to my S3 bucket without sacrificing any Wordpress functionality(resize/title etc)? What do you think the most efficient way to do this? Currently I'm looking at this plus cron job but I would like to know better option if it exist.

• Lexmark X7170 shows documents as printed when they haven't

  I made the move from Windows 7 to Ubuntu not dual booting because I have decided to quit gaming to spare more time for my studies. I just needed an OS for browsing the web and word processing etc. After I installed Ubuntu I installed the AMD GPU drivers, after which I clicked on the little printer icon, selected add printer and it found the drivers for the Lexmark 7000 series and I installed them. Now my problem is when I print something from Writer it processes it thinks its completed it, when in fact it hasn't printed anything. I tried printing a test page but it was stuck on processing for 5 minutes. I have restarted my computer and turned the printer on and off. I'm running 64bit if that changes anything.

• How can I customize my bootloader to make it prettier?

  I hate how when I turn on the computer it just (after the hp logo, which I hate having also), shows white text on a black background. I'm wondering if there's easy ways to customize this (I'm choosing between Windows 7 and two separate Ubuntu 10.10 installs). I've read a little about some complicated ways to do this, but is there not some simpler ways by installing a package on ubuntu or something? I don't want to hack a bunch of code together to get a simple effect. I'm hoping for actual images and having like the windows 7 logo and ubuntu logo to choose from. Ideas?

  I took my old computer (AMD 5600+, 2GB RAM, 880gt, 250GB SATA, etc) and decided to jump and try Ubuntu for the first time. I have very very little knowledge (Red Hat when I was younger) with Linux in general. My main desktop is Windows 7 and my plan is to use the Ubuntu computer as a file server sort of speak. I want to be able to setup back up schedules from my Windows PC to the Ubuntu PC (plan on leaving this on 24/7 to double as a Seedbox) How do I go on to doing this?

• SETUP for sending Mail via postfix to GMAIL

  My knowledge of mail delivery systems is near ZERO I have stand alone PC running UBUNTU 12.04 (no other OP systems) I am developing a web system with PHP and want to send an email to users that have registered. I have installed POSTFIX and set it up to work with GMAIL (I hope correctly) My little test program appears to send the email but it does not arrive at destination. Is there some special code for SMTP or something else needed to install? Please can you give me step by step instructions of what must be installed. • Separating portion of website to its own server

  So my job is to take the homepage (or maybe I should say "homesite" because it encompasses a few interrelated pages) and drag this onto its own Apache server. The problem I'm having right now is being able to weed out jumbled/bundled files (such as folders of js, css, and other files that i cant even identify) and knowing what is necessary to keep the homesite running. I'm new to this stuff (I'm an intern) so feel free to ask questions if I'm leaving vital information out. What I'm asking of you guys here is basically any pointers or tips you may be able to give me in order to get the job done. I could use some advice from people with a little more experience in web development. btw: This question may appear as though I have not completed any prior research and that is, for the most part, true. But the problem is I really am not sure how to research this. If you guys could throw me some keywords to play with that would really be helpful. Thanks!
