  • Set up grub2 on cloned Ubuntu installation

    With an Ubuntu Live Disc, I have copied my Ubuntu 10.04 installation to a new harddisk (with the same hardware). However, it doesn't boot, since I think I still need to set up grub for this new installation. How do I set up grub2 for a copied Ubuntu installation? All the tutorials for grub2 didn't really help me... running update-grub on the "original" Ubuntu installation doesn't find the copied Ubuntu installation.

    I would like to create an OS-agnostic installation of Ubuntu on a flash drive, that boots under Ubuntu and under Mac OS X. Ideally the process would look like: Install Ubuntu 11.10 (or 12.04 if necessary) on a flash drive (from Ubuntu). Boot from flash drive (on PC) to modify files, etc. Plug drive into Mac with OS X 10.4, boot to Ubuntu from it, and use. I have an 8G flash drive. What is the sanest way to do this?

  • Unable to boot ubuntu 11.10 from external usb drive

    I'm new to Ubuntu (and actually all things Linux) as of this morning, so please excuse any stupid mistakes I may be making. I recently bought an external hard drive for my newly built PC (that is running windows 7 if it matters). I would like to install Ubuntu onto the external drive and boot from there. I downloaded Ubuntu 11.10 and made a bootable cd, unplugged my internal HDDs, plugged in the external drive, installed Ubuntu 11.10 on the external drive via the installer, and replugged in my internal HDDs. Then I set my bios boot order to: Boot from USB-HDD - Boot from Hard Disk - Boot from CD/DVD. Now when I restart I get the message "Starting Operating System..." (or something like that, I forget exactly what it says) that lingers on the screen for a moment and then windows starts. Any idea what the problem may be? ~Relevant info~ BIOS version: Award Software International, Inc. F2, 2/22/2011 Ubuntu Version: 11.10 External Hard Drive: Western Digital My Passport Essential 500GB Portable Hard Drive (Black) ~Things I've already tried~ 1) Unplug internal HDDs so that only external drive was plugged in via usb. Same thing happened only obviously my BIOS could not detect any hard drives besides the external one. When booting received error "Could not detect operating system" 2) Formatted external hard drive and re installed. It didn't make a difference, however interestingly when I booted from cd the ubuntu installer said it detected ubuntu 11.10 on the external hard drive. 3) Within BIOS I've messed around with every boot order combo I could think of both in the "Hard Disk boot order" screen and the "Boot order" screen. I'm a little confused of why there are two screens for this. 4) Held F12 during startup which opens (what I think is) the one time boot screen and it gave me the options "Hard Drive", "cd/dvd", "USB-FDD", "USB-cdrom", "USB-HDD", and "USB-something else I can't remember what it was". I tried all of them, but the same thing as before happened each time. ~References~ I noticed several people on askubuntu have tried to do something similar if not the exact same. In fact, I even found a post that pretty much outlines step by step exactly what I did... only their's worked. /jealous. Linky: Install Ubuntu or Kubuntu on a External USB Drive I'm willing to try a different version of ubuntu - it's not like my heart is set on 11.10, but it's a pain to open my case and unplug my internal hard drives so I'd prefer not to do this unless someone is reasonably confident it'll work. I know on fedora when you insert instillation media on a computer that already has fedora it asks you if you want to install it over that fedora, is there anything like this for Ubuntu. THANKS!

    I have installed Ubuntu 13.04 on my desktop (runs like a charm). Then I used Crouton to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my chromebook samsung (ARM). It also works quite good. But here comes my question. Can we have a true Ubuntu (preferably 13.04) on my ARM chromebook? It seems that the Crouton/Ubuntu is not 100% the real thing. The best option would be to have the full Ubuntu 13.04 and remove the Chrome OS.

This not happen on login screen, like login screen infinite loop problem. I get the login and use it normally then suddenly the screen goes black. I was using Ubuntu 14 and for this problem I formatted and installed Ubuntu 13, but the problem remains.

    I am trying to create a dual-boot environment between Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 14.04. I installed Ubuntu on a separate partition successfully, and I am following these instructions: Is it possible to boot Ubuntu using the Windows bootloader? However, when I restart my computer, Windows Bootloader still won't recognize Ubuntu. Does anyone know what could be wrong? EDIT: I can add an Ubuntu entry successfully using EasyBCD, but as soon as I restart my computer, the entry disappears.

So I thought that I had erased windows but I didn't as the hard drive with Windows still shows up under ubuntu. Then I tried to fix the MBR but it shows up as windows not being installed but I can access all the files in ubuntu what the heck is going on?

The method of installation is by U-disk, the name of Ubuntu 12.10 is quantal-desktop-i386.iso (the download link is from Universal-USB-Installer), and Universal-USB-Installer was used to write the Ubuntu 12.10 into U-disk.     I have a Windows 7 machine with Truecrypt. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 with the intention of converting to an Ubuntu only machine but I can't install Truecrypt on Ubuntu. I have been looking through the forums and have followed all advice to the letter and still Truecrypt doesn't work; I have only a non-functional icon in "dash". Should I uninstall Ubuntu and start over (ie reinstall)? I love Ubuntu and greatly appreciate your efforts on this forum.

    Is there a way to display User fields under a form that adds/edits a UserProfile model? I am extending default Django User model like this: class UserProfile(models.Model): user = models.OneToOneField(User, unique=True) about = models.TextField(blank=True) I know that it is possible to make a: class UserProfileInlineAdmin(admin.TabularInline): and then inline this in User ModelAdmin but I want to achieve the opposite effect, something like inverse inlining, displaying the fields of the model pointed by the OneToOne Relationship (User) in the page of the model defining the relationship (UserProfile). I don't care if it would be in the admin or in a custom view/template. I just need to know how to achieve this. I've been struggling with ModelForms and Formsets, I know the answer is somewhere there, but my little experience in Django doesn't allow me to come up with the solution yet. A little example would be really helpful!

  • ASP.NET and WIF: Showing custom profile username as User.Identity.Name

    I am building ASP.NET MVC application that uses external services to authenticate users. For ASP.NET users are fully authenticated when they are redirected back from external service. In system they are logically authenticated when they have created user profiles. In this posting I will show you how to force ASP.NET MVC controller actions to demand existence of custom user profiles. Using external authentication sources with AppFabric Suppose you want to be user-friendly and you don’t force users to keep in mind another username/password when they visit your site. You can accept logins from different popular sites like Windows Live, Facebook, Yahoo, Google and many more. If user has account in some of these services then he or she can use his or her account to log in to your site. If you have community site then you usually have support for user profiles too. Some of these providers give you some information about users and other don’t. So only thing in common you get from all those providers is some unique ID that identifies user in service uniquely. Image above shows you how new user joins your site. Existing users who already have profile are directed to users homepage after they are authenticated. You can read more about how to solve semi-authorized users problem from my blog posting ASP.NET MVC: Using ProfileRequiredAttribute to restrict access to pages. The other problem is related to usernames that we don’t get from all identity providers. Why is IIdentity.Name sometimes empty? The problem is described more specifically in my blog posting Identifying AppFabric Access Control Service users uniquely. Shortly the problem is that not all providers have claim called http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/ws/2005/05/identity/claims/name. The following diagram illustrates what happens when user got token from AppFabric ACS and was redirected to your site. Now, when user was authenticated using Windows Live ID then we don’t have name claim in token and that’s why User.Identity.Name is empty. Okay, we can force nameidentifier to be used as name (we can do it in web.config file) but we have user profiles and we want username from profile to be shown when username is asked. Modifying name claim Now let’s force IClaimsIdentity to use username from our user profiles. You can read more about my profiles topic from my blog posting ASP.NET MVC: Using ProfileRequiredAttribute to restrict access to pages and you can find some useful extension methods for claims identity from my blog posting Identifying AppFabric Access Control Service users uniquely. Here is what we do to set User.Identity.Name: we will check if user has profile, if user has profile we will check if User.Identity.Name matches the name given by profile, if names does not match then probably identity provider returned some name for user, we will remove name claim and recreate it with correct username, we will add new name claim to claims collection. All this stuff happens in Application_AuthorizeRequest event of our web application. Conclusion Mixing AppFabric Access Control Service and Windows Identity Foundation with custom authorization logic is not impossible but a little bit tricky. The user is created with the option --disabled-password But if I try to clone with git clone git@<server>:gitolite-admin.git he asks not only for the passphrase of my rsa_key but also for the password of the gituser.   • What browser is sending user agent beginning mozilla/5.0+, tramslates & into &amp;

    We've got a website which has been running for a few years now. One of our customers has just started having an intermittent problem. Looking at our iis6.0 logs the service works correctly when they have a user agent beginning "mozilla/4.0+" but fails when the user agent begins "mozilla/5.0+". The particular customer only started having this problem on Wednesday. Does anyone know the browser/upgrade which changes the 4.0 to 5.0? The actual problem caused is that an "&" in a url parameter list is being encoded as "&amp;". Anyone seen anything similar? We have other users sending from browsers with the 5.0+ user agent without trouble. Sorry about the tags but don't have the rep to create new ones.   • User unable to delete folder / files "File in use by another user" Server 2003

    I am administering a standalone Windows 2003 Terminal Server with no domain membership. Occasionally (about once a week or so) a user will attempt to delete a sub-folder in a Shared folder and gets denied with "File in use by another user". I tried checking the shared folder snap-in and that folder is not open. She has full control and is the owner of the folder as well. I even checked in "Effective permissions" for some of the folders / files she cant delete and she truly has full control. I am able to delete the folder as Administrator with no problem. Another odd thing, she can delete the files IN the folder most of the time (this issue happens on both folders and files in the share). Sometimes merely waiting a day or two will allow her to delete the folder or files. I am curious as to why she gets the message that it is in use as creator/owner with full control yet I don't get it simply as a member of the Admin group. If anyone out there has any ideas I'd love to hear them! THANK YOU.

  • 32-bit Ubuntu or 64-bit w/Intel Atom D510 w/4GB RAM?

    (I've seen this question and some related ones, and perhaps this is a duplicate although part of my question is specific to the Atom D510.) I'm going to be installing Ubuntu on a new silent desktop as my latest (and hopefully last) attempt to switch from Windows to Linux for at least most everyday tasks. The new machine is entirely passvely cooled, but as a consequence, not astonishingly powerful — an Atom D510 (dual-core, 1.6GHz, HT) on Intel's D510MO board. That's fine, I won't use it for gaming, (much) video editing, etc. It's a 64-bit processor and I'm maxing the board out at 4GB of RAM (hey, that 1.6 CPU needs all the help it can get), which naturally raises the question of whether to install Ubuntu 64-bit or 32-bit (and if the latter, either live with the missing RAM, or do the PAE kernel dance). Although I've used Linux on servers for years, I'm very nearly a Linux desktop newbie and am not currently in the mood to fight driver wars and such. So if I'm setting myself up for failure with 64-bit, I'll live with the missing ~0.8GB or fiddle with PAE. But if 64-bit is entirely "ready," great, I'm there. So: Do most mainstream apps (now) play nicely with 64-bit Linux? I can't help but notice the "AMD" in the ISO image filename ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso and I know AMD lead the way on this stuff — does Ubuntu 64-bit play nicely with Intel processors? Just generally, would you recommend one or the other? (And if anyone has any experience with Ubuntu specifically on the D510 [32-bit or 64-bit] which might lead me one way or t'other, that would be useful.) Thanks in advance.

    I'm having diffculties configuring 20 new Dell Vostro minis here. I set up one of them with my preferred OS, applications and settings, especially the Visual Effects Settings of Windows XP. I set them to best performance and deactivated everything else in the box. I copied this profile to Default User Profile and did sysprep -mini -reseal. After capturing this image and deploying it again, the desktop settings are correct except the visual effects settings. fading and everything else is reenabled for each new user which is created on the system. How do I preserve my settings from being overwritten by sysprep? thanks!

    I'm trying to rsync a 15 GB file from my OSX box to a box running Ubuntu 10.04 server. rsync is transferring ~300-700Mb and then closing the connection with the following error: Read from remote host my.host.name: Connection reset by peer rsync: writefd_unbuffered failed to write 4 bytes [sender]: Broken pipe (32) rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (397214 bytes received so far) [sender] rsync error: unexplained error (code 255) at /SourceCache/rsync/rsync-40/rsync/io.c(452) [sender=2.6.9] The exact command I am executing is: rsync --progress --archive --inplace my.15GB.file.tgz my.host.name:~/ I am sure that there is enough free space on the Ubuntu box. Any ideas what could be causing the connection to drop?
