• Watermarking Flash Videos (server-side)

  Hi all, I have a bunch of flash videos that I need to watermark with user related information, to make illegal re-distribution of these files harder. I'm wondering how can this be done server-side. If done client-side, it will be quite easy for the user to intercept the videos before they are watermarked. Since the watermark should contain user-specific information I can't really watermark the videos before encoding them (unless I have an encoded video per user - not feasible). I'm expecting this to affect the streaming performances a lot, though. Any idea how this can be done (possibly in an efficient way)?

• AIR for Android, Flash iphone packager, Playbook support for streaming camera and choosing camera

  I am wondering if anyone can definitively tell me if Flash / AIR can find all these mobile devices front facing camera and use RTMP to stream the video captured ? I would like to create a video conferencing app for these devices. Of course none of them support testing this in the simulators and I don't have the funds to purchase or access all of them that I would like to test. Wondering if anyone can shed some light on this for me. I have seen some posts where they have done this for android but not sure about support for finding a list of cameras, choosing one and streaming from iphone 4 and playbook. thanks for any help on this.

• Flash Displaying Weird Text in a Dynamic Text Field

  I am working in Flash CS5 and I have placed a text field (dynamic, classic text) on the stage. I am accessing it through Actionscript on the same frame like this: var ct:TextField = TextField(getChildByName("Temperature")); ct.text = "Hello world"; What ACTUALLY appears is this: eo wor So... The H, Ls, and D are gone. Mysteriously. Without warning. I am sitting here utterly confused. Is this just me? PS. The text field is set to Myriad Pro Bold, a font on my computer, so it isn't like it's a font problem.

• How to optimize frame rate in Flash/Actionscript?

  I'm building an application in Actionscript using Flash assets, and my frame rate becomes very low (~7 fps) when I attempt to render 20+ assets on the screen, even though most of those assets are stopped movie clips. I've tried setting .cacheAsBitmap to true, which helps a bit, but not enough. What else can I do to get the frame rate up? I've noticed that some movie clips seem to impact it more than others, but I'm not sure how to alter them to make them easier to render. Thanks!

  Hi, I have a problem with my site in internet explorer. It works fine in firefox, opera etc. Sometimes internet explorer won't show my flash banner. For example when I'm on home page it works fine, but when i press services it doesn't show. Also, when opnend in older versions in IE the page get's completely mixed up. The banner doesn't show and the menu bar gets missplaced. Please help. • Facebook, Flash and maintaining state

  So here's the situation: I have a Flash application I'm deploying to facebook as a canvas app. There are various states within this app - different "pages", sort of. I want to be able to share this app with other users using Facebook's baked-in sharing mechanism. However, I want each state to have its own share button. That way when someone clicks Share on page 3 they are actually sharing page 3, not the root of the whole application. Does anyone know if Facebook exposes some mechanism by which this could be possible? It would be as simple as passing a string into the iFrame that holds the canvas app, so I could load it in as a FlashVar and work from there. I'm kind of beating my head against the wall - does this request make sense, and has anyone tackled anything like this before? Thanks!

• column formatting in flash 8 datagrid

  I have a datagrid in flash 8 that has an array as a data provider. One of the items in the array is a number, which represents an amount of money. So I iterate through the array and create a new item "amountFormatted" in each line of the array. For example I have a value of 10 and a formatted value of £10.00 in the array. This formatted value then appears in the datagrid. This seems a little cumbersome and I wondered if there was a way to set some automatic function so that the column in the datagrid is automatically formatted. a bit like an excel column can have formatting applied to it. • Flash CS5 AS3 drop shadow filter won't print

  Hello all, I've tried searching quite a bit to discover why I don't seem to be able to print drop shadow filters from within Flash. I have trouble printing, but if the movieclip I want to print has or contains a drop shadow, that clip will print sans the drop shadow. Anyone have any insight as to why this might be happening? If you want to try it out yourself, here is the simple print code I'm using.   I got function in Flash (Action Script 3) - that makes snowflakes falling. Now i want to make this snowflakes appear on screen only for 3 seconds. So I'm trying to use Timer class but i got problem: var myTimer:Timer = new Timer(3000, 1); myTimer.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, snowflakes); myTimer.start(); function snowflakes(event:TimerEvent):void { //snowflakes faling function } In this case snowflakes appear after 3 seconds and stay on the stage forver...So its kinda opposite what i wanted. I want them to appear from the very beginning then disappear after 3 second. How can I do that ?

  In an ActionScript 2 project I can create a new MovieClip, right-click on it on the library and select "Component Definition" to add parameters that can be referenced inside the MovieClip. This parameters can be easily changed in the MovieClips's properties. Now, I'm working on an ActionScript 3 project but haven't been able to figure out a way to obtain the values passed in those parameters. I defined a parameter named "textToDisplay" but when I write the following in the Actions for the first frame I get an error: trace(textToDisplay); This is the error: 1120: Access of undefined property textToDisplay.   I'm searching for some code samples for my Flash application. The app is based on screen-flows , i.e each screen is defined with some visual elements with some buttons which have async events associated with them(consuming web services basically). The buttons also have functionality to go back and forth between screens and jump to any screen. I want to define all of the visual elements and the functionality of the events in a XML file. Thus the model, view and controller are all in the XML. Does any framework allow this like Pure MVC? Where can I find some examples of this kind of functionality that I want?

• Yahoo Astra flash component error BaseScrollPane not found

  I'm trying to use the Astra library from Yahoo but I'm getting an error saying the base class BaseScrollPane is not found. It appears to be imported from fl.containers.BaseScrollPane, which leads me to believe it should be a part of the base flash 10 library and therefore should be available, but it appears to be missing. Is this part of a separate package from somewhere? Update: For what it's worth, I found the actual class files in the Configuration/Component Source folder on my hard drive, but adding that to the class path (as well as the Components directory) did no good. I ended up fixing the issue by dragging a scroll pane component to the stage from the Components window and then deleting it, but I'm not sure what exactly that action changed that made it work, and would like to know for future reference.

• Possibility of initiating playback of flash video on headless server through the terminal

  Hey so I have a website which has video's gathered from places around the web, primarily youtube but a few other's as well. Now I am wondering if there is some way to check link's to make sure they are still available through a unix shell. (My idea is to run a cron to check videos are still available and if not delete them.) I am aware i could use user to do this but it always bothered me and was wondering if there is somehow to check the playback of a flash video though the terminal . Any insight into this would be awesome as I haven't found much on the web. Also note ideally the tech. will work on all video type's including html5. update So it's occured to me that through the you tube api, I could check the status of the video's coming from youtube (which is a start). But I would love to know if there's something else that is not player specific but rather just calls the video to play similar to how a user would.

• Can I distort a bitmap image in Flash?

  Hi, what I would like to do is to take a loaded GIF file as a Bitmap, and then distort it by stretching and shrinking parts of it, so it would look like it got squished up against the screen. I'm pretty sure that there's no easy way in Flash to go beyond scaling and shearing, but I wonder if there might be some simple techniques to accomplish this kind of effect. By the way, I've also thought of pre-deforming the images in GIMP and saving them there, but I can't find a simple way to do it without learning their scripting language. Thanks for your help!

  I need an easy way to show different document-types (.doc, .xls, .jpg...) in webpages. Ideally a user prints or saves that document and that document is automatically converted to Adobe-Flash. I know there are existing solutions to this. However, I would like to implement them in my own application, written in C#. • Server 2008 Task Scheduler Mapped Drive Access C#

  I'm trying do get Server 2008's Task Scheduler to run a C# console app which backs up data to a mapped backup drive somewhere on FastHosts network. I've written a test app which simply does this Directory.CreateDirectory("Z:\" + DateTime.Now.Ticks.ToString()); i.e. just creates a directory on the root of this Z drive. This works fine when I just run the .exe but when I schedule it in Task Scheduler it says the task has completed with return code 3762507597 - I can't find any info on what this means. I'm running the task with the highest Admin privelages as far as I can see.

  I have usb-tethering enabled in my phone. It works fine with Vista. When I plug my phone into my Tecra 8000 laptop running Xubuntu, dmesg shows: "usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 8". I see that the OS has detected it as a storage device, but I can't get it to function correctly as a network device. /dev/us* shows no usb0, but it does show /dev/usbdev1.1_ep00 /dev/usbdev1.1_ep81 /dev/usbdev1.8_ep00 ... usbdev1.8_ep83. I could just use the wireless tether app for android, but I can't get my Netgear wg511 v2 (made in China) wireless card to work in this laptop either. But that's another post for later.

• How to cope with runaway Flash plugin in Google Chrome browser?

  I'm using Google Chrome for Linux, version 5.0.307.11 (Official Build 39572) beta with the Linux Flash plugin version 10.0 r32. Quite often, the Flash plugin goes wild and pegs the CPU with about 95% usage. Laptop gets hot, battery drains. I can diagnose the problem with Chrome's little process monitor (shift-Esc), and I can even kill the plugin, but then when I actually want to use Flash on a page, I can't find a way to restart the plugin; I have to exit and restart Chrome, which with 30 tabs open is a huge hit. Does anyone know what causes this problem? Does anyone have a better workaround (or heaven forfend, a fix)? [I struct out both with search and with Google's help site for Chrome.]

  Howdy, I need to know if a USB dongle that is required as a license key for a piece of software will accessible from the physical host machine. This will be a small vSphere 4 installation targeting the quick backup and system restore capabilities of VMWare, not specifically HA, so I am not to worried about the virtual machine automatically failing over to another physical machine and the dongle not being accessible. • How many times can data be read from a USB flash drive?

  While I am aware that performing writes on a USB flash drive degrades the life expectancy of the device. I have heard the quantity of writes is anywhere from 100 thousand to 10 million, but I have not heard about number of read operations. Does reading from the device count toward this total? I am interested in writing only once to a flash drive and setting it to read-only. Then reading files from the device a thousand or more times per day, but am wondering if (at say 1,000 reads per day), the flash drive will need to be replaced within 100 days (assuming a 100,000 r/w cycle lifetime)?

  How can enable remote terminal login into Ubuntu 9.10 using a USB serial port? I created device /dev/ttyUSB0 and i want to allow logins using Hyper-Terminal. I found some resources but they are related to real hardware rs232 ports. I can't find any information about USB converter. So far I have established connection between that USB-serial port and my laptop. I can send text to the port (cp sometext.txt /dev/ttyUSB0) and read it using hyperterminal. What do I need to do to enable logins on this port?
