• Does C# have a future in games development?

  I recently learned that the MMO Minecraft is powered by Java from a recent interview on CVG.co.uk on a possible collaboration between two former and now competing colleagues. In the interview he bluntly said that the founder of Minecraft is a Java coder and he is a C or C++ coder so they are incompatible with each other. So collaborating on future projects will be difficult. This got me thinking, If Java could do that? What does the future hold for MS very popular C# language and .Net platform as far as games or mainstream games development is concerned?

• Bring Office 2003 Menus Back to 2010 with UBitMenu

  Are you having trouble getting used to the Ribbon interface in Office 2010?  Here’s how you can roll back the clock a bit and bring back the familiar menus and toolbars from 2003. The Office 2007 Ribbon was both praised and criticized.  While many users felt they were more productive with the new interface, others felt frustrated searching for commands they had memorized in older versions of Office.  Now, with Office 2010, the ribbon interface has been brought to every app in the Office suite, and is integrated into many newer programs from Microsoft. If you’re moving from Office 2003, using UBitMenu allows you to add the old familiar menus back along with the new Ribbon interface for an easier learning curve. Also, with the customizability of Office 2010, we can strip away the extra Ribbon tabs to make it more like 2003. Get the 2003 Menus and Toolbars Back in Office 2010 Download UBitMenu (link below), and install as normal.  Make sure all of your Office programs are closed during the installation.  This handy utility is very small, and installed amazingly quick. Open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint and there’s now a new Menu tab beside Home in the Ribbon.  Now you can access all of your favorite old Office commands in the familiar menus, and access many of the newer Office features such as SmartArt.   Here’s a close-up of the toolbar.  Notice that the layout is very similar to that of Word 2003. You can access all of the new Transitions in PowerPoint 2010 from the menu bar.   The menu in Excel even included support for the new PivotTable and PivotCharts Wizard. One problem we noticed was that the toolbars were condensed to a drop-down menu if the Office window was less than 870px wide.  This may be a frustration to users with low-resolution displays, and you might want to use the Office Apps maximized. Get Rid of the Ribbon Now that you’ve got the old menus back, you can get rid of the extra ribbon tabs if you’d like.  Office 2010 lets you customize your ribbon and remove tabs, so let’s get rid of all the other tabs except for our new Menu tab.  In our example we’re using Word, but you can do it in Excel or PowerPoint the same way. Click the File tab and select Options. Alternately, in the Menu tab, select Tools and then Word Options. Select Customize Ribbon on the left sidebar, then uncheck the boxes beside all the ribbon tabs you want to hide on the right.  Click Ok when you’re finished. While you’re at it, you can change the default color scheme as well. Note: The color change will automatically change the color scheme in all of the Office apps, so you’ll only need to do that once. Now the ribbon only has 2 tabs…the File tab for the new Backstage View, and the UBitMenu tab we just installed.  It almost has the appearance Word 2003, but with the new features of Word 2010!  You’ll need to repeat these steps in Excel and PowerPoint if you want to customize their ribbon the same.   Conclusion If you’ve been having a hard time getting used to Office 2010, UBitMenu is a great way to get familiar with the new interface, or simply stay productive with your old tricks.  We do wish it supported the other Office applications like OneNote and Outlook. That doesn’t make it a deal breaker though, it can make the learning curve easier in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. UBitMenu is free for personal use, and available at a very reasonable price for businesses. If you’re using Office 2007 and not a fan of the Ribbon, UBitMenu works for it as well. • Test Driven Development with vxml

  It's been 3 years since I did any coding and am starting back up with Java using netBeans and glassfish.  Right off the bat I noticed two things about Java's ease of use.  The java ide (netBeans) has finally caught up with visual studio, and jUnit, has finally caught up with nUnit.  netBeans intellisense exists and I don't have to subclass everything in jUnit.    Now on to the point of this very short post ( request)   I'm trying to figure out how to do test driven development with vxml and have not found anythnig yet.  I've done my google search, but unfortunately, TDD in IVR land has something to do with helping the hearing impared. I've found a vxml simulator or two, but none of their marketing is getting my hopes up.    My request - if you have done any agile engineering work with vxml, contact me, I need to pick your brain and bring some ideas back to my team.   Thanks in advance.

• Additional useful skill?

  Almost each language has some additional technology or skill or whatever which can work in a pair with it but still be something fresh. For example, Java + Flex. It's a good pair - those who learn Java and want something both useful and new may try Flex. What are "pairs" for the most popular languages(Java, C#, C++, etc.)? PS: Most people advise learning functional programming as an additional skill but this is very fuzzy. They talk about such abstract things as wide programming perspective and other things, but you can hardly say whether these functional skills will be really needed. Yeah, maybe some basics of it can be useful, but serious learning of LISP seems not perspective.

• Installing MATLAB Ubuntu 12.10, persistent "permission denied" problem

  I'm trying to install MATLAB on Ubuntu 12.10, I had it in my last laptop with 12.04 and I didn't have much trouble to install it. I'm getting this problem: j@jgb:~/Programs/Instaladores/matlab$ ./install Preparing installation files ... Installing ... ./install: 1: eval: /tmp/mathworks_1436/sys/java/jre/glnxa64/jre/bin/java: Permission denied Finished And it doesn't change if I change the permissions to the java file or to the install file as other posts say. In my /etc/fstab file I had this line added (But nothing changes if I comment it): tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nodev,nosuid,noexec,mode=1777 0 0 Thanks

• Why was Objective-C popularity so sudden on TIOBE index?

  I'd like to ask a question that is pretty similar to the one being asked here, but for Objective-C. According to TIOBE rankings, the rise of popularity of Objective-C is unprecedented. This is obviously tied to the popularity of Apple products, but I feel like this might be a hasty conclusion to make since it doesn't really explain the stagnant growth of Java (1. There are way more Android O/S devices distributed worldwide, 2. Java is used in virtually every platform one can imagine) Now I haven't programmed in Objective-C at all, but I'd like to ask if there are any unique features or advantages about the language itself compared to other prevalent languages such as C++, Java, C#, Python etc. What are some other factors that contributed into the rise of Objective-C in this short span of time?

• Can someone explain to me C#'s coding convention?

  I recently started working with Unity3D and primarily scripting with C#. As, I normally program in Java, the differences aren't too great but I still referred to a crash course just to make sure I am on the right track. However, My biggest curiosity with C# is that is capitalises the first letter its method names (eg. java: getPrime() C#: GetPrime() aka: Pascal Case?). Is there a good reason for this? I understand from the crash course page that I read that apparently it's convention for .Net and I have no way of ever changing it, but I am curious to hear why it was done like this as opposed to the normal (relative?) camel case that, say, Java uses. Note: I understand that languages have their own coding conventions (python methods are all lower case which also applies in this question) but I've never really understood why it isn't formalised into a standard.

  I just have a question about .net entry level jobs in VA. I am a master degree student in field of software engineering but I am graduated from department of physics. I decided to work on Java first, but I have changed my mind because I don't have any Java programming background except Java class in master degree so I decided to work on C# because it was easy to me to work with Visual Studio and it's fun to me to work with SQL database and HTML stuffs. And I am a member of a IT consultant company in Reston where I took course from there about .net and I created online recruitment system for their web site. Now I am applying for CPT (internship) but I didn't work in a company as a .net developer so I don't have experience. Here is my question. If I get CPT and find a job, what do software companies want from an entry level .net developer? and what do they ask as interview questions?

• Object-Oriented Operating System

  As I thought about writing an operating system, I came across a point that I really couldn't figure out on my own: Can an operating system truly be written in an Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) Language? Being that these types of languages do not allow for direct accessing of memory, wouldn't this make it impossible for a developer to write an entire operating system using only an OOP Language? Take, for example, the Android Operating System that runs many phones and some tablets in use around the world. I believe that this operating system uses only Java, an Object-Oriented language. In Java, I have been unsuccessful in trying to point at and manipulate a specific memory address that the run-time environment (JRE) has not assigned to my program implicitly. In C, C++, and other non-OOP languages, I can do this in a few lines. So this makes me question whether or not an operating system can be written in an OOP, especially Java. Any counterexamples or other information is appreciated.

• Configuring Eclipse Xubuntu 12.04

  Just installed Eclipse 3.7.1 on my xubuntu 12.04. I used to have eclipse installed on my 10.04. You could choose new java project, java source files etc. but this version doesn't have these options. If i make a .java file, it's just plane text, no highlighting and no chance to compile. I have installed eclipse-jdt. I looked https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EclipseIDE this manual. It tells to modify /etc/eclipse/java_home file but there is no such file on my system, just eclipse.ini. Am i missing a step here or have i encountered some sort of a bug?

• JSF 2.x's renaissance

  JAXenter's Chris Mayer posted a column last week about the "JavaServer Faces enjoying Java EE renaissance under Oracle's stewardship". This piece discusses the adoption and increased ecosystem (component libraries, tools, runtimes, ...) since the release of JSF 2.0 as well as ongoing work on 2.2. As Cameron Purdy comments, Oracle as a company certainly has vested interest in JSF and will continue to invest in the technology. Specifically for JSF 2.2, and as this other article points out, a lot of the work has to do with alignment with HTML5 (see this example) and making the technology even more mobile-friendly (along with the main Java EE 7 "PaaS" theme of course). Chris' article concludes with "JSF appears to be the answer for highly-interactive Java-centric organisations who were hesitant of making a huge leap to JavaScript, and wanted the best RIA applications at their disposal".

• How do you answer "Rate yourself" questions?

  Hi , I have been frequently asked questions like "Rate yourself in java" It goes like interviewer : Rate yourself in java on the scale of 10 me: 9 interviewer : Rate yourself in J2EE me : 8 .... But really I just come up with arbitrary numbers. Sure I know Java well , but what does it mean to say "9 out of 10" . I think it is a very subjective question, that does not make sense overall. The problem is ,if I say 9 , If I am not able to answer any question , the interviewer might think , "this guy just said 9" . On the other hand If I said 6 , there is a good chance the interviewer might think "He rates himself this low...not good" How do you respond to such questions ?

• NetBeans 6.9 Released

  Great news, the first NetBeans release that has been conducted fully under the stewardship of Oracle has now been released. NetBeans IDE 6.9 introduces the JavaFX Composer, a visual layout tool for building JavaFX GUI applications, similar to the Swing GUI builder for Java SE applications. With the JavaFX Composer, developers can quickly build, visually edit, and debug Rich Internet Applications (RIA) and bind components to various data sources, including Web services. The NetBeans 6.9 release also features OSGi interoperability for NetBeans Platform applications and support for developing OSGi bundles with Maven. With support for OSGi and Swing standards, the NetBeans Platform now supports the standard UI toolkit and the standard module system, providing a unique combination of standards for modular, rich-client development. Additional noteworthy features in this release include support for JavaFX SDK 1.3, PHP Zend framework, and Ruby on Rails 3.0; as well as improvements to the Java Editor, Java Debugger, issue tracking, and more. • Atheros 922 PCI WIFI is disabled in Unity but enabled in terminal - How to get it to work?

  I am trying to get my PCI Wireless Atheros 922 card to work. It is disabled in Unity: both the network utility and the desktop (see screenshot http://www.amisdurailhalanzy.be/Screenshot%20from%202012-10-25%2013:19:54.png) I tried many different advises on many different forums. Installed 12.10 instead of 12.04, enabled all interfaces... etc. I have read about the aht9 driver... The terminal shows no hw or sw lock for the Atheros card, nevertheless, it is still disabled. Nothing worked so far, the card is still disabled. Any help is much appreciated. • How to make openJDK automatically update-alternatives?

  Well, I've made a fresh Ubuntu 11.10 install and I installed openJDK 7. It updated alternatives just after installing, so it was all good. Then, I compiled a source and executed it and it didn't worked, then I noticed that java was using the version 1.6, while the javac was 1.7. I thought I had installed it wrong, so I uninstalled it and installed it again. But now, it does not update alternatives automatically (it does it only for javaws). Is there a way to "restart" it so the apt-get does the update-alternatives by itself like the first time? Is it normal that it uses the java 1.6 instead of the java 1.7 when installing openJDK 7? Thank you very much!

• Is type safety worth the trade-offs?

  I began coding in in Python primarily where there is no type safety, then moved to C# and Java where there is. I found that I could work a bit more quickly and with less headaches in Python, but then again, my C# and Java apps are at much higher level of complexity so I have never given Python a true stress test I suppose. The Java and C# camps make it sound like without the type safety in place, most people would be running into all sorts of horrible bugs left an right and it would be more trouble than its worth. This is not a language comparison, so please do not address issues like compiled vs interpreted. Is type safety worth the hit to speed of development and flexibilty? • How can I schedule execution of a program?

  Let's say I have a small "Hello World" Java program compiled in my home directory. I can run it with java helloWorld from my home directory and it executes without any problem. Now I need to schedule to execute this program let's say after 10mins from now. So, I am executing following commands on console: at now+10min warning: commands will be executed using /bin/sh at> java helloWorld Press CTRL+D to finish So it is scheduled properly as I can see it with at -l command. But at this time nothing happens. Why? What is wrong with it? Because, if instead of scheduling the execution my own program I schedule executing of gedit command it opens it at a specified time. But with my own program it doesn't perform anything. How can I change the situation?
