  I am new to Linux and want to know what kind of programs can be run by using. #service myservice start And the programs stays on until stopped. Are they normal c++ programs or are they different. In some tutorials i have seen that they use ./myprogram to start a program. Another thing I have seen is the usage of .sh files. One last type of program i see is executed by the command: #/usr/bin/myprogramm Can someone explain the difference between these or point me to a basic tutorial/guide.

• Rails: constraint violation on create but not on update

  Note: This is a "railsier" (and more succinct) version of this question, which was getting a little long. I'm getting Rails behavior on a production server that I can't replicate on the development server. The codebases are identical save for credentials and caching settings, and both are powered by Oracle 10g databases with identical schema (but different data). My Rails application contains a user model, which has_one registration; registration in turn has_and_belongs_to_many company_ownerships through a registration_ownerships table. Upon registering, users fill out data pertinent to all three models, including a series of checkboxes indicating what registration_ownerships might apply to their account. On the dev server, the registration process is seamless, no matter what data is entered. On production, however, if users check off any of the company ownership fields before submitting their registration, Oracle complains about a constraint violation on the primary key of the company_ownerships table (which is a two-field key based on company_ownership_id and registration_id) and users get the standard Rails 500 error screen. In every case, I've verified that no conflicting record on these two fields exists in the production database, so I don't know why the constraint is getting violated. To further confuse things, if a user registers without listing any ownerships and later goes back and modifies their account to reflect ownership data (which is done through the same interface), the application happily complies with their request and Oracle is well-behaved (this is both on production and dev). I've spent the past couple days trying to figure out what might be causing this problem and am reaching the end of my wits. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

• Using Mapkit to create a local searchable Map

  Using MapKit as a base, I'm planning on adding a map to a project with 'local search' capabilities. I think 'local search' describes the feature I want to design into the map. Here is my vision. The map is displayed on the bottom half of a view. The user's current location is highlighted by default. When the user pushes the 'search' button annotation pins drop onto the map. The search is programmatically fixed to a certain item....for example supermarkets. So supermarkets in a 5 mile radius of the user's current location will populate the map. How would I add this local search feature to the already amazing MapKit? I've learned an incredible amount as a new developer in the last few months, and look forward to learning googles...correction googols more. Thanks in anticipation.

  Hi. I am developing an Eclipse plug-in and I'd like to associate a new menu (at the top of the screen along with File, Edit etc) with a perspective I'm creating. I did the menu ok but it is being displayed even in other perspectives. How can I associate it only with my perspective? • Compiling and linking libcurl to create a stand alone dll

  Hi, I've managed to compile a dll with the necessary linked libraries (*.lib) and with CURL_STATICLIB set in the preprocessor section among other settings. I'm using "libcurl-7.19.3-win32-ssl-msvc.zip" package and compiling with VS 2008 express. This has been the first version I managed to get compiled properly with no link issues etc. The problem I have now is that my dll needs libcurl.dll to function and this is not ok. My dll needs to be independent. I have no idea how to implement this. I've taken all day just to get what I've got compiled. I've got runtime library set to Multi threaded dll (debug/release) respectively under C/C++ - code generation. I've a number of preprocessor set - CURL_STATICLIB being one of them. Configuration Type is set to Dynamic Library Use of MFC is set to Use MFC in a static library Additional Library Directories is set to the lib folders (debug/release) respectively. I've noticed there is a curllib_static.lib file which I've tried instead of curllib.lib as an additional dependency but it only compiles with the later. This is driving me nuts! So I guess I need some guidance as to how to make my dll completely static so it doesn't have any dependencies. I notice my dll is currently dependent on: CURLLIB.DLL MSVCR90D.DLL As I'm pretty new to C++ it could be a setting I'm missing in VS 2008 but I'm not sure. One person said I should be using a static library with *.a files (libcurl.a) etc but when I do this I get link errors which I haven't been able to resolve. Any guidance here would be much appreciated.

  For a little project about XML I try to use HTML5 as it has SVG and WAI-ARIA Support. I also want to use a XSL stylesheet for my document. But I can't get a valid HTML5 document with a nested SVG. Here are some version I tested so far: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"> <xsl:output indent="yes" method="xml"/> <xsl:template match="/"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> // content with the svg tag in the body </html> </xsl:template> </xsl:stylesheet> In combination with header('Content-Type: application/xml'); it works and produces this HTML output: <?xml version="1.0"?> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> // content with the svg tag in the body </html> But it is not HTML5 and without a DOCTYPE I get a lot of errors on the W3 validator. Using header('Content-Type: image/xhtml+svg'); or header('Content-Type: text/html'); there is no XML parsing error, but the page will not show the SVG as a graph but as text (without the tags). Can anyone tell me how to avoid the meta tag to be inserted or how to set a propper Content-Type that will make the browser rendern the SVG. Or even any other hint to get this working. I would really like to keep HTML5 to be able to keep the WAI-ARIA Landmark Roles an the HTML5 tags like NAV and FOOTER.

• Using the FreeType lib to create text bitmaps to draw in OpenGL 3.x

  At the moment I not too sure where my problem is. I can draw loaded images as textures no problem, however when I try to generate a bitmap with a char on it I just get a black box. I am confident that the problem is when I generate and upload the texture. Here is the method for that; the top section of the if statement just draws an texture of a image loaded from file (res/texture.jpg) and that draws perfectly. And the else part of the if statement will try to generate and upload a texture with the char (variable char enter) on.   I am using jabber bot written in python to log some MUC talks. Sometimes it drops on some network or XMPP problems. In this case I have to start it again by myself. The goal is to make it "self-respawning". I have some variants about how to do it. Bot is one process. Another process monitors its activity and starts it if bot died. Main process spawns bot subprocess and controls it. Also I think daemonizing bot process is useful here. Platform is Linux, as you could guess. What is the right way to solve this problem?

  I am trying to use Intellij's file templates (not live templates) to help mitigate how much boilerplate code I use when making Services, daos, and their interfaces. I am able to use all the system defined variables just fine, such as ${PACKAGE_NAME} What I want though, is to be able to use my own variable names, like ${MY_USER_INPUT} however, when i do this like above, I get an error The documentation says : It is also possible to specify arbitrary number of custom variables in format ${<VARIABLE_NAME>}. and then Intellij is supposed to prompt the user for the value. However, this just plain doesn't work for me. What am I missing?

I have never worked on linux and dont plan on working on it either - The only command I probably know is "ls" :) I am hosting my website on Eapps and use their cpanel to setup everything so never worked with linux. Now I have this one time case - where I need to provide access to a contractor to fix the CSS issues on my website. He basically needs FTP (read/write) access to certain folders. At a high level - this is my code structure /home/webadmin/example.com/html/images /css /js /login.php /facebook.php /home/webadmin/example.com/application/library /views /models /controllers /config /bootstrap.php /home/webadmin/example.com/cgi-bin I want the new user to be able to have access to only these folders /home/webadmin/example.com/html/js /home/webadmin/example.com/html/css /home/webadmin/example.com/application/views He should not be able to view even the content of other folders including files like bootstrap.php or login.php etc If any sys admins can help me set this account up - will really appreciate it.   Can anyone tell me how adding a key scales in MySQL? I have 500,000,000 rows in a database, trans, with columns i (INT UNSIGNED), j (INT UNSIGNED), nu (DOUBLE), A (DOUBLE). I try to index a column, e.g. ALTER TABLE trans ADD KEY idx_A (A); and I wait. For a table of 14,000,000 rows it took about 2 minutes to execute on my MacBook Pro, but for the whole half a billion, it's taking 15hrs and counting. Am I doing something wrong, or am I just being naive about how indexing a database scales with the number of rows?

How else can I programmatically make this table invisible?
