• How do I get Graphics drivers / bluetooth / card reader working on an Acer Aspire V3-571G?

  A couple of days ago I bought an Acer Aspire V3-571G laptop without a system installed on it. The only thing that was there was Linux Linpus. I created a bootable CD with Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit - I read that my processor was 64 bit and that it might be a good configuration for my gear (I'm not especially fluent with all the computer stuff, still trying to learn) and replaced Linpus with Ubuntu. Everything seemed to work fine, but there're few exceptions to that which came pass my way. My bluetooth doesn't work. It seems to be switched on, but when I check my system settings the button is actually off, and I can't drag it 'perminently' to the 'on' position. Tried a couple of commands I found on the net, none of them helped and there was no word whatsoever in my BIOS settings about enabling bluetooth. My card reader has some serious problems with copying more than one file at a time. I tried to put some music on my phone through a MicroSD card adapter (because my bluetooth doesn't work) and it got stuck every single time I copied an album on it. • Unable to install ubuntu on a AMD 64 bit system with a AMD Radeon HD 6670 graphics card

  I’ve been running a dual boot system (Ubuntu/Windows7) for two years or so with no problems. I recently built an AMD 64 Bit System, re-installed Windows but when I went to load Ubuntu inside Windows, hit a snag. The screen view during installation became small square blocks of colour, which obviously is a graphics drive problem. I tried various live disks both 32 & 64 bit for, Ubuntu 12.04, 11.10 & 10.10, all but Ubuntu 10.10 had the same problem. Ubuntu 10.10 loaded ok, installed the presented ATI graphics driver as usual but was left with the AMD Unsupported watermark at the bottom right of the screen. The graphics card installed in the computer is an MSI ATI Radeon HD 6670 (in effect an AMD Radeon HD 6670). I am fairly new to linux and while I can install and tweak the OS, I am rather baffled as to what to do. So my question is will an up to date ATI Driver be released in the near future for installation/live disks? Or am I going to have to downgrade my graphics card to use linux? Yours Tom Wingrove

• Information about rendering, batches, the graphical card, performance etc. + XNA?

  I know the title is a bit vague but it's hard to describe what I'm really looking for, but here goes. When it comes to CPU rendering, performance is mostly easy to estimate and straightforward, but when it comes to the GPU due to my lack of technical background information, I'm clueless. I'm using XNA so it'd be nice if theory could be related to that. So what I actually wanna know is, what happens when and where (CPU/GPU) when you do specific draw actions? What is a batch? What influence do effects, projections etc have? Is data persisted on the graphics card or is it transferred over every step? When there's talk about bandwidth, are you talking about a graphics card internal bandwidth, or the pipeline from CPU to GPU? Note: I'm not actually looking for information on how the drawing process happens, that's the GPU's business, I'm interested on all the overhead that precedes that. I'd like to understand what's going on when I do action X, to adapt my architectures and practices to that. Any articles (possibly with code examples), information, links, tutorials that give more insight in how to write better games are very much appreciated. Thanks :)

When inserted any PVC card with no chip or AT24C01 card, it would not choke but report immediate PowerUp failure. When I tried it on Windows(Windows 7, "runas other user", smartcard login), it chokes too while PVC cards and AT24C01 report immediate failure.

In these rules they have import statements with wildcards, for example: import org.drools.runtime.rule.*; When I upload this on Guvnor and try to build, it tells me: Unable to introspect model for wild card imports (org.drools.runtime.rule.*). Please explicitly import each fact type you require. Is it possible to use wildcard imports in Drools rules???

• Invoice Discount: Negative line items vs Internal properties

  Should discount on invoice items and entire invoices be negative line items or separate properties of an invoice? In a similar question, Should I incorporate list of fees/discounts into an order class or have them be itemlines, the asker focuses more on orders than invoices (which is a slightly different business entity). Discount is proposed to be separate from order items since it is not equivalent to a fee or product and may have different reporting requirements. Hence, discount should not simply be a negative line item. Previously I have successfully used negative line items to clearly indicate and calculate discount, but this feels inflexible and inaccurate from a business perspective. Now I am opting to add discount to each line item, along with an invoice-wide discount. Is this the right way to do it? Should each item have its own discount amount and percentage? • With which class to start Test Driven Development of card game application? And what would be the next 5 to 7 tests?

  I have started to write card game applications. Some model classes: CardSuit, CardValue, Card Deck, IDeckCreator, RegularDeckCreator, DoubleDeckCreator Board Hand and some game classes: Turn, TurnHandler IPlayer, ComputerPlayer, HumanPlayer IAttackStrategy, SimpleAttachStrategy, IDefenceStrategy, SimpleDefenceStrategy GameData, Game are already written. My idea is to create engine, where two computer players could play game and then later I could add UI part. Already for some time I'm reading about Test Driven Development (TDD) and I have idea to start writing application from scratch, as currently I have tendency to write not needed code, which seems usable in future. Also code doesn't have any tests and it is hard to add them now. Seems that TDD could improve all these issue - minimum of needed code, good test coverage and also could help to come to right application design. But I have one issue - I can't decide from where to start TDD? Should I start from bottom - Card related classes or somewhere on top - Game, TurnHandler, ... ? With which class you would start? And what would be the next 5 to 7 tests? (use the card game you know the best) I would like to start TDD with your help and then continue on my own!

• Force validation on bound controls in WPF

  Hello. I have a WPF dialog with a couple of textboxes on it. Textboxes are bound to my business object and have WPF validation rules attached. The problem is that user can perfectly click 'OK' button and close the dialog, without actually entering the data into textboxes. Validation rules never fire, since user didn't even attempt entering the information into textboxes. Is it possible to force validation checks and determine if some validation rules are broken? I would be able to do it when user tries to close the dialog and prohibit him from doing it if any validation rules are broken. Thank you.

• In SQL Server Business Intelligence, why would I create a report model from an OLAP cube?

  In Business Intelligence Developer Studio, I'm wondering why one would want to create a report model from an OLAP cube. As far as I understand it, OLAP cubes and report models are both business-oriented views of underlying structures (usually relational databases) that may not mean much to a business user. The cube is a multidimensional view in terms of dimensions and measures, and the report model is... well I'm not sure entirely -- is it a more business-oriented, but still essentially relational view? Anyway, in Report Builder I can connect directly to both an OLAP cube or a report model. So I don't see why, if I have an OLAP cube which already provides a business-oriented view of the data suitable for end-users, why I would then convert that to a report model and use that in Report Builder instead. I think I'm obviously missing some fundamental difference between report models and cubes -- any help appreciated!

  One thing that I keep hearing in reference to ASP.NET and MSFT technologies is that they cost money to use. Often when they are being compared to open source languages someone will mention that one factor in favor of open source is that it's free (to an extent). My question is, when does ASP.NET actually cost money to use in terms of using the proprietary technology? Understandably there are the hosting fees, but I'm curious about the fees outside of these hosting fees. I'm especially curious about this as it relates one-person smaller-site development (non-team/large enterprise). Any help is appreciated. (edits) Some excellent answers. Much appreciated The projects that I'm looking to use the technologies for would be personal sites and very small business sites (1 or 2). The intent would of course be that these projects get much bigger. It seems that for commercial production, fees will apply. The problem is with Caching - If I use the current web context cache object than I might end up with duplicate caching (as the web context will be different for every application). I'm currently thinking about implementing a simple caching mechanism with a singleton pattern that will allow the different web sites (aka different application domains) to share their "caching wisdom". • DataTable to Object collection

  I'm working on a data import feature and I've been able to load an excel sheet into a DataTable using Ado.NET with the MSJet db engine. I created a simple one-to-one mapping dialog, in which the user drags column headings from their spreadsheet to a list of object properties. What's stumping me is how to turn each DataRow into a business object. Is there an easy way to do this? If there is a better way than using a DataTable as a middleman I'm open to suggestion? I use NHibernate extensively through out the rest of my program but I couldn't find any attempts to map to an excel spreadsheet. I went with a DataTable because the technique was well documented.

  This is more of a thought i had awhile rather than an actual problem to solve, maybe more a discussion, but i was wondering if it would be possible to design the game of solitaire and be abkle to play it in the python GUI or some other form of iterface? I know you can get a deck of cards fairly easily and i know yuo can play simple games like snap and so on but i thought solitaire would be more challenging and fun because there is alot more logic behind it than just laying out the cards randomly.   I have a business plan & money to hire a developer - the essentials involve simple online games for children (played via traditional computer over the internet) such that their scores are uploaded to a database that can be viewed via a nice portal. What I don't know is: what technologies I would want my developer to know (the only somewhat unusual requirement I have is that the games have relatively accurate timing of keypresses/mouse presses) how much I should expect to pay (in general, what is the appropriate range) how many hours a program of the complexity of a simple tower defense -type game should take to develop (to be clear, the idea is not to implement TD, but rather other games of similar complexity) whether I should go with capable acquaintances, some online kind of online web-dev bidding site, or just try to find a capable undergraduate at the local university who I can wow with his/her first big paycheck, how I should communicate the software's specifications to my hired developer... • Should I really be expected to work more than 40 hours a week just because I am 'salaried developer'

  My boss says that I shouldn't be counting hours, but I am only getting paid for a full time job 40 hours per week. I don't get it. I could be using the rest of the hours in my day to run a small side business and get more income. However I have noticed other people just working and working whatever hours to hit the deadline. How is this fair? Of course the argument was 'if you worked more and increased your value then you will get more money'. A friend I regard as one of the smartest people I know (engineered his own sonar system for example) said that you should never work beyond what you are getting paid for. Thoughts?

  I am a developer and my company is moving towards a "no laptop" policy in fear of them being lost or stolen and source code being compromised. Now I don't work for NASA, the military or anything labeled Top Secret but our code is very important to our business nonetheless (as all source code would be). I'll be honest, I disagree with this policy against laptops and wanted to see what others think. I'd like to know: What is your team/company's stance on laptops Your company's size and/or field (small, medium or large, Fortune 500, etc). • General approach for posting business logic status messages to UI?

  Hello all. I have been struggling with this question for awhile now, and I haven't reached a conclusion. I'm not typically a UI programmer, so forgive the noobishness. I'm writing a typical application with a UI layer (WPF) and a business layer. I want to post status messages to the UI from the business layer (perhaps deep within the business layer), but I don't want the business layer to have any knowledge of the UI. Is there a generally accepted pattern for this? I was thinking to have a message queue of some sort to which the business layer posts status messages, and have the view model of the UI subscribe to that queue and intercept messages from the queue and route them to the UI. Is that a good approach? Is there somewhere else I should start? Thank you.

The Public database contains a table which is mostly for public access level, like "user" table which has basic user information The Private database contains a table which has "private" information, user bank transactions etc I created 2 ADO.Net entity models, one each for Private and Public database and selected the tables. I also created 2 different domain context services On on Silverlight page, I need to get information from the tables that are across 2 databases, Private and Public as described above. How do I achieve this? I am thinking of some kind of a wrapper that internally gets data from domain services. Whats the best approach?

  When you create a Silverlight Business Application you get a Silverlight application and a Web application. In the Web/Resources folder of the Silverlight app there are links to the files in the Resources folder of the Web app. These links are exactly like the files they link to in that they are heirarchical with the Resource.Designer.cs file shown as a code-behind file for the Resource.resx file When I try to link to a Resource file in this way I only get the .resx file unless I link to the .Designer.cs file separately. However in this case the Designer.cs file is then shown as a standard code file and not related to the .resx file. Does anyone know how to do this linking correctly?
