• How can one use the "Add view" dialog in Visual Studio efficiently when working with ASP.NET MVC?

  Does anyone else think that the add view dialog in VS is useless or is it just me? Why is there no search/filtering in there? I can not even paste the type name (without namespace) there to speed up the view creation. Plus, there are a lot of irrelevant classes there, including classes from all referenced libraries. Am I missing something or Microsoft never did any usability testing with that?? Is it possible to filter out types/assemblies in the dialog and/or better navigation compared to manually scrolling the combobox with all the types listed? Is it possible to include only types from a particular directory/assembly/namespace? (the ViewModels namespace for example) EDIT: As it seems from the answers that there is no usable workaround for this, I have filed a suggestion at Connect: https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=507784 Please vote for the suggestion if you find this is an important issue.

• Silverlight Unit Testing Framework running tests in external class library

  I'm currently looking into different options for unit testing Silverlight applications. One of the frameworks available is the Silverlight Unit Test Framework from Microsoft (developed primary by Jeff Wilcox, http://www.jeff.wilcox.name/2010/05/sl3-utf-bits/). One of the scenarios I'm looking into is running the same tests on both Silverlight 3 (PC) and Windows Phone 7. The Silverlight Unit Test Framework (SLUT) runs on both PC and phone. To prevent having to copy or link files I would like to put my tests into a shared test library, that can be loaded by either a WP7 application using the SLUT, or a Silverlight 3 application using SLUT. So my question is: will SLUT load unit tests defined in a referenced class library, or only in the executing assembly?

• Need to have an aspx page with a Feature in SharePoint 2010

  I have added a custom button to the server ribbon in SharePoint (I have used a feature with Farm scope, so that the button is visible throughout the various site collections). However when I install the feature and click the button, I get an error saying "Cannot load CustomPage". I understand that I haven't deployed the assembly, but shouldn't the aspx page be compiled Just In Time?

Retrieve the LoaderExceptions property for more information I copied referenced dll into folder where is located according to http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/xmlandnetfx/thread/308e4f3a-e1c3-43f5-b7a6-a82f1395997d but still get the same error I have questions : 1) What can be possible reasons of such error ? 2) How should be used LoaderExceptions property ? • CLR Function not working in restored database

  So I've restore a database with CLR assemblies in it from one physical server to another. One of the functions in the CLR assembly essentially does an uncompress of some compressed data. When I run this function against data in the restored database it returns the compressed data (rather than the uncompressed data). No error is thrown in SSMS or in the SQL server error logs. At the suggestion of others, I've checked differences in the database ownership (both owned by sa), trustworthiness (both set to not trustworthy). I also checked differences in the .NET framework installs on both machines but found only that the target machine had a 1.1 version installed that the source didn't. I don't know what else to try. • Windows Azure - Microsoft.IdentityModel not found

  I installed WIF runtime and SDK on my machine. I added Microsoft.IdentityModel.dll to my azure web application and locally everything is running great. I build simple web application which use Azure AppFabric Access control. I follow azure labs for that and as I told, local everything is great. When I published my web application to Azure, I'm getting following error : Unable to find assembly 'Microsoft.IdentityModel, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35'. I get it after Appfabric Relaying part is going to return url, after sign in on identity provider. The weird thing is that I set Copy Local to TRUE, because that .dll is not part of Azure GAC. I tried to publish it again, but I received same error. I found few same problems on the internet but with no concrete solution. Does anybody here had something similar and probably have a working solution? Thank you in advance

• msbuild for .NET 3.5 issue with csla and System.Linq

  This is a weird problem. I am trying to build a .NET 3.5 solution with msbuild. I generally write custom build scripts for this, and when I tried this time to build a simple .NET assembly which internally uses CSLA, it started giving me Linq errors. However, if I build the proj file via msbuild (command line), it seems to build just fine. No issues at all. Anyone else encounter this issue...and if yes, how do i fix this? Thanks, Sashidhar Kokku

• Making sure unsigned int/long always execute in checked context in C#

  Has anyone found it strange that the default context for uint and ulong is unchecked rather than checked considering that they are meant to represent values that can never be negative? So if some code is trying to violate that constraint it seems to me the natural and preferred behaviour would be to throw an exception rather than returning the max value instead (which can easily leave important pieces of data in an invalid state and impossible to revert..). Is there an existing attribute which can be applied to either class/assembly so that it always performs arithmetic operations in a checked context? I was thinking of writing one myself (as an aspect using PostSharp) but would be great if there's one already. Many thanks,

• Can I use manifests to specify an optional dependency on a COM server?

  I'd like to use manifests to specify a dependency on a COM server (reg-free COM). The consumer application will mostly work fine without the COM server - only something like 1,7% of its functionality uses the COM server. So with plain old regsvr32 it would start and work fine until the user would do something that would trigger CoCreateInstance() call and at that point the consumer would get an error message. Now I've played with manifests for a while and it looks like the consumer wouldn't even start unless the COM server assembly it depends on is present in the file system. That's no good. Is there a way to use reg-free COM with manifests and make the dependency optional - so that the consumer program starts and works fine until CoCreateInstance() is actually called?

  I am developing an Excel addin that has an udf and calls it as a worksheet function. It is a com addin where I am using the IDTExtensibility2 interface and set the class interface type as autodual and then shim it as in the link http://blogs.msdn.com/andreww/archive/2006/07/23/excel-interop-types-in-shimmed-automation-add-ins.aspx Things work fine in my development machine but I am having a tough time packaging the assembly. The addin registers but the formula does not appear in the formula bar of Excel after the installation. Can someone help me with the right way to get it done ? I use VS 2008 and Office 2007 for my testing. Thanks in advance.

  I'm trying to create a generic list from a specific Type that is retrieved from elsewhere: Type listType; // Passed in to function, could be anything var list = _service.GetAll<listType>(); However I get a build error of: The type or namespace name 'listType' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) Is this even possible or am I setting foot onto C# 4 Dynamic territory? As a background: I want to automatically load all lists with data from the repository. The code below get's passed a Form Model whose properties are iterated for any IEnum (where T inherits from DomainEntity). • PagedDataSource does not support serialization - how can I enforce this ?

  Sounds like I want to override a physics law, but at least it is the most reasonnable solution, cpu / HDD and Ram effective for my asp.net project. In fact, I got a pageddataSource and a customDataReader that supports paginated data. The truth is my data are in a viewstate variable, because it is re-used in an update panel. When I intend to use it into my pageddatasource, asp.net 3.5 kills me with a System.Web.UI.WebControls.PagedDataSource' in Assembly 'System.Web, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' is not marked as serializable. cool exception... So I'd rather not offend newton because I know he'll always win, but I would need some help to enforce this pagedDataSource law, that seems so unbelievable, except if someone has an explanation.

• Considering getting into reverse engineering/disassembly

  Assuming a decent understanding of assembly on common CPU architectures (eg: x86), how can one explore a potential path (career, fun and profit, etc) into the field of reverse engineering? There is so little educational guides out there so it is difficult to understand what potential uses this has today (eg: is searching for buffer overflow exploits still common, or do stack monitoring programs make this obselete?). I am not looking for any step by step program, just some relevant information such as tips on how to efficiently find a specific area of a program. Basic things in the trade. As well as what it is currently being used for today. So to recap, what current uses does reverse engineering yield today? And how can one find some basic information on how to learn the trade (again it doesn't have to be step-by-step, just anything which can through a clue would be helpful).

  I have a website on Server A and it needs to find a directory on Server B.   I'm running into an issue where I can't make a reference to a class in a different namespace. I have 2 classes: namespace Foo { public class Class1 { ... } } namespace My.App.Foo { public class Class2 { public void SomeMethod() { var x = new Foo.Class1; // compile error! } } } The compile error is: The type or namespace name 'Class1' does not exist in the namespace 'My.App.Foo' In this situation, I can't seem to get Visual Studio to recognize that "Foo.Class1" refers to the first class. If I mouse-over "Foo", it shows that its trying to resolve that to "My.App.Foo.Class1" If I put the line: using Foo; at the top of the .cs file that contains Class2, then it also resolves that to "My.App.Foo". Is there some trick to referencing the right "Foo" namespace without just renaming the namespaces so they don't conflict? Both of these namespaces are in the same assembly.

• C# - Sending keyboard events to (last) selected window

  Hi guys, I want to use virtual keyboard assembly found here http://www.codeproject.com/KB/miscctrl/touchscreenkeyboard.aspx like on screen keyboard (OSK.exe) in Windows. Can someone please tell me how can I use it so that it always stays on top and yet for user to be able to select other windows on dekstop for keyboard input, just like "on screen keyboard" in Windows, specifically I don't know how to select last selected window (can't use GetForegroundWindow or GetFocus only, because when user clicks on virtual keyboard it gets focused and I get handle of keyboard window itself)? This is very urgent to me so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Could I achieve better performance when trying to keep the structures and commands for the interpreter more complex and high-level? That would be surely a lot harder, or?

• Application Runs when Debugging but not when Published.

  When publishing my web application and then running it will return the error "Could not load file or assembly 'BaseApplicationName' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format." However if I run the application through debugging (f5) it runs correctly. I guess what it comes down to is what differences are there when running an application through debugging vs publishing it that would cause a problem like this? When publising I have it set to delete all existing. History of how it started... I added the 32 bit Oracle.DataAccess dll to my 64 bit system. It would not work and crash giving the same error as above but with the Oracle.DataAccess name instead of the baseApplicationName. I have since removed all references to it and removed the dll to try and get it to run without it once again. Any advice?

• Insriting into a bitstream

  I'm looking for a way to efficiently insert bits into a bitstream and have it 'overflow', padding with 0's. So for example if you had a byte array with 2 bytes: 231 and 109 (11100111 01101101), and did BitInsert(byteArray,4,00) it would insert two bits at bit offset 4 making 11100001 11011011 01000000 (225,219,24). It would be ok even the method only allowed 1 bit insertions e.g. BitInsert(byteArray,4,true) or BitInsert(byteArray,4,false). I have one method of doing it, but it has to walk the stream with a bitmask bit by bit, so I'm wondering if there's a simpler approach... Answers in assembly or a C derivative would be appreciated.

  Hi, Im using the Microsoft.Office.Interop.MSProject.Resource assembly which has a "UniqueID" property, it has a get but not set. How can I actually set a value?
