• Hosting and domain registrations for multiple clients under a single hosting account of mine?

  I am finally getting regular work designing, developing, and deploying websites for small businesses and individuals. So far the websites utilize single-user content management systems, so the websites create, as far as I know, minimal load on the shared servers. I have always required that each of my clients purchase annual shared hosting at Dreamhost. For domain registration, I ask that they register with Dreamhost, but some already have a registered domain elsewhere and this is fine with me. I do this so the billing issues are the client's responsibility, not mine. My question is: Since I can register unlimited domains and connect them to my one shared hosting account at Dreamhost, should I not be requiring clients to individually pay for shared hosting and a domain? Should I actually be paying for one hosting account and then hosting all of my client's websites on that account? As I said before, I currently have each client buy their own hosting, because I feel that, for example, if there is high traffic to their site, there would be less a chance of the site going down than if their site was hosted with many others on one account. I am famous for being long-winded, please let me know if I can clarify at all. Thanks!

• Should my web app have its own domain name?

  I'm going to get a domain name for my personal web page. It will contain my blog, photos and other personal stuff, plus different web apps and tools that I'm working on. I have put quite a lot of work in one of the web apps, and I think it has great potential. It covers a niche in a way that no other page has done before and I can see great possibilities to expand it. Via links to webstores and ads I think it could even make some money, and if I play it right this could be the place to go when you're into the specific niche that it covers (sorry for being so vague). My question is, would it be better for a (potentially great) web app like this to have its own domain name (nameofmyapp.com) instead of being a subpage of my personal page (mypersonaldomain.com/nameofmyapp)? Is the web app more likely to be found by others, via Google etc, with its own domain name? Could a "subpage" give more attention (visitors) to my personal page? pros and cons?

• Public domain usage of imagery from films? [on hold]

  I'm thinking of starting a small film site, which would begin as a simple blog. Imagery from films I discuss on the site would be vital to the look and feel of this site. Instantly though this makes me wonder about copyright/public domain rights for such imagery. I just wondered if anyone had general or specific advise about using imagery from this industry or another similar situation? On the one hand I know the film industry aggressively tries to protect its IP (fair enough), but on the other hand, surely film companies do release some imagery of their films in stills format into the public domain to simply help their distribution and advertising efforts? I have tried looking on stock photo galleries for images of film stills but only found moviestillsdb.com) which seemed very limited in its results. I've researched a bit about fair usage (http://fairuse.stanford.edu/overview/fair-use/) as well, which I know applies to the USA specifically. This seems to suggest that a still of a film is within these bounds. Still, any constructive advise others may have as a result of experience dealing with imagery, from film or another domain would be greatly appreciated, assuming it isn't "get a lawyer".

• Communicate with the local machine from a web page

  Hello. We have a web application. There are physical devices that we need to be able to communicate with, and we have access to all of our clients computers to install whatever software we need. Now, for the question: Is there a way to make this browser-agnostic? As in, not requiring ActiveX controls? One of my ideas was to install a custom made webserver on each client and then have javascript on our webpage that communicates with that webserver. This could be done by the same way that http://earlz.biz.tm javascript can access subdomains assigned to 127.0.0.1 such as http://loopback.earlz.biz.tm The problem with this of course is that the client's custom made webserver would be forced to run on port 80(which will have conflicts at least sometimes), or we would have to use a nonstandard port for our web application, which is quite undesirable. Does anyone else have ideas on how to do this?

• DDD: Aggregate Roots

  Hello, I need help with finding my aggregate root and boundary. I have 3 Entities: Plan, PlannedRole and PlannedTraining. Each Plan can include many PlannedRoles and PlannedTrainings. Solution 1: At first I thought Plan is the aggregate root because PlannedRole and PlannedTraining do not make sense out of the context of a Plan. They are always within a plan. Also, we have a business rule that says each Plan can have a maximum of 3 PlannedRoles and 5 PlannedTrainings. So I thought by nominating the Plan as the aggregate root, I can enforce this invariant. However, we have a Search page where the user searches for Plans. The results shows a few properties of the Plan itself (and none of its PlannedRoles or PlannedTrainings). I thought if I have to load the entire aggregate, it would have a lot of overhead. There are nearly 3000 plans and each may have a few children. Loading all these objects together and then ignoring PlannedRoles and PlannedTrainings in the search page doesn't make sense to me. Solution 2: I just realized the user wants 2 more search pages where they can search for Planned Roles or Planned Trainings. That made me realize they are trying to access these objects independently and "out of" the context of Plan. So I thought I was wrong about my initial design and that is how I came up with this solution. So, I thought to have 3 aggregates here, 1 for each Entity. This approach enables me to search for each Entity independently and also resolves the performance issue in solution 1. However, using this approach I cannot enforce the invariant I mentioned earlier. There is also another invariant that states a Plan can be changed only if it is of a certain status. So, I shouldn't be able to add any PlannedRoles or PlannedTrainings to a Plan that is not in that status. Again, I can't enforce this invariant with the second approach. Are the tabs something they did in the HTML and the store domains are really masking to the ugly store URL? • Saving State Dynamic UserControls...Help!

  I have page with a LinkButton on it that when clicked, I'd like to add a Usercontrol to the page. I need to be able to add/remove as many controls as the user would like. The Usercontrol consists of three dropdownlists. The first dropdownlist has it's auotpostback property set to true and hooks up the OnSelectedIndexChanged event that when fired will load the remaining two dropdownlists with the appropriate values. My problem is that no matter where I put the code in the host page, the usercontrol is not being loaded properly. I know I have to recreate the usercontrols on every postback and I've created a method that is being executed in the hosting pages OnPreInit method. I'm still getting the following error: The control collection cannot be modified during DataBind, Init, Load, PreRender or Unload phases. • How to implement an offline reader writer lock

  Some context for the question All objects in this question are persistent. All requests will be from a Silverlight client talking to an app server via a binary protocol (Hessian) and not WCF. Each user will have a session key (not an ASP.NET session) which will be a string, integer, or GUID (undecided so far). Some objects might take a long time to edit (30 or more minutes) so we have decided to use pessimistic offline locking. Pessimistic because having to reconcile conflicts would be far too annoying for users, offline because the client is not permanently connected to the server. Rather than storing session/object locking information in the object itself I have decided that any aggregate root that may have its instances locked should implement an interface ILockable public interface ILockable { Guid LockID { get; } } This LockID will be the identity of a "Lock" object which holds the information of which session is locking it. Now, if this were simple pessimistic locking I'd be able to achieve this very simply (using an incrementing version number on Lock to identify update conflicts), but what I actually need is ReaderWriter pessimistic offline locking. The reason is that some parts of the application will perform actions that read these complex structures. These include things like Reading a single structure to clone it. Reading multiple structures in order to create a binary file to "publish" the data to an external source. Read locks will be held for a very short period of time, typically less than a second, although in some circumstances they could be held for about 5 seconds at a guess. Write locks will mostly be held for a long time as they are mostly held by humans. There is a high probability of two users trying to edit the same aggregate at the same time, and a high probability of many users needing to temporarily read-lock at the same time too. I'm looking for suggestions as to how I might implement this. One additional point to make is that if I want to place a write lock and there are some read locks, I would like to "queue" the write lock so that no new read locks are placed. If the read locks are removed withing X seconds then the write lock is obtained, if not then the write lock backs off; no new read-locks would be placed while a write lock is queued. So far I have this idea The Lock object will have a version number (int) so I can detect multi-update conflicts, reload, try again. It will have a string[] for read locks A string to hold the session ID that has a write lock A string to hold the queued write lock Possibly a recursion counter to allow the same session to lock multiple times (for both read and write locks), but not sure about this yet. Rules: Can't place a read lock if there is a write lock or queued write lock. Can't place a write lock if there is a write lock or queued write lock. If there are no locks at all then a write lock may be placed. If there are read locks then a write lock will be queued instead of a full write lock placed. (If after X time the read locks are not gone the lock backs off, otherwise it is upgraded). Can't queue a write lock for a session that has a read lock. Can anyone see any problems? Suggest alternatives? Anything? I'd appreciate feedback before deciding on what approach to take.

• DDD and Client/Server apps

  I was wondering if any of you had successfully implemented DDD in a Client/Server app and would like to share some experiences. We are currently working on a smart client in Flex and a backend in Java. On the server we have a service layer exposed to the client that offers CRUD operations amongst some other service methods. I understand that in DDD these services should be repositories and services should be used to handle use cases that do not fit inside a repository. Right now, we mimic these services on the client behind an interface and inject implementations (Webservices, RMI, etc) via an IoC container. So some questions arise: should the server expose repositories to the client or do we need to have some sort of a facade (that is able to handle security for instance) should the client implement repositories (and DDD in general?) knowing that in the client, most of the logic is view related and real business logic lives on the server. All communication with the server happens asynchronously and we have a single threaded programming model on the client. how about mapping client to server objects and vice versa? We tried DTO's but reverted back to exposing the state of our objects and mapping directly to them. I know this is considered bad practice, but it saves us an incredible amount of time) In general I think a new generation of applications is coming with the growth of Flex, Silverlight, JavaFX and I'm curious how DDD fits into this.

  Typically I've been lucky enough to have a fairly simple Django and Apache configuration. But now I'm writing several apps that will sit on the same server and I need them to each have individual domains. The apps live at www.myserver.com/app/app1 (app2...) and I would like to access it using www.someawesomedomain.com. I don't want a redirect since I do not want to expose the underlying path. What is the best way to do this, in the context of 5 - 10 sites? I'm using Apache2.

• Whats up with cross site Scripting (getJSON) and flickr example

  In past i had read the documentation about getJSON and there is an example with a flickr photo api. (the example with the [pussy]cats :-)). No I ask myself why is it possible, to access flickr directly with this example. Ive tried this by store this code on my local machine - it works but if I use a local copy of jquery i just get an error in firebug like this $ is not defined myurl/test.html Line 11 Does anybody of you have a solution for this paradox thing? • Rails - Multiple top level domains and a single session/cookie

  Hello all, I've been struggling with this for quite awhile and haven't been able to find a solution. I need a user to be able to view multiple top level domains with a single login. My understanding is that this needs to be set in environment.rb and called with before_dispatch.   I can't seem to call this executable correctly in my psake deploy script. If I do this: exec { "$ArchiverOutputDir\NServiceBus.Host.exe /install" } It simply outputs this (and is clearly not calling the executable - just outputting the value of that expression): c:\ReloDotNet2_ServiceEndpoints\Archiver\NServiceBus.Host.exe /install But if I do this: exec { c:\ReloDotNet2_ServiceEndpoints\Archiver\NServiceBus.Host.exe /install } I get the expected output from the executable. How do I correctly call an executable with a variable in the path to the executable in psake? If this is actually a PowerShell issue, please feel free to correct the question to reflect that insight. • Saving complex aggregates using Repository Pattern

  We have a complex aggregate (sensitive names obfuscated for confidentiality reasons). The root, R, is composed of collections of Ms, As, Cs, Ss. Ms have collections of other low-level details. etc etc R really is an aggregate (no fair suggesting we split it!) We use lazy loading to retrieve the details. No problem there. But we are struggling a little with how to save such a complex aggregate. From the caller's point of view: r = repository.find(id); r.Ps.add(factory.createP()); r.Cs[5].updateX(123); r.Ms.removeAt(5); repository.save(r); Our competing solutions are: Dirty flags Each entity in the aggregate in the aggregate has a dirty flag. The save() method in the repository walks the tree looking for dirty objects and saves them. Deletes and adds are a little trickier - especially with lazy-loading - but doable. Event listener accumulates changes. Repository subscribes a listener to changes and accumulates events. When save is called, the repository grabs all the change events and writes them to the DB. Give up on repository pattern. Implement overloaded save methods to save the parts of the aggregate separately. The original example would become: r = repository.find(id); r.Ps.add(factory.createP()); r.Cs[5].updateX(123); r.Ms.removeAt(5); repository.save(r.Ps); repository.save(r.Cs); repository.save(r.Ms); (or worse) Advice please! • Best design for generating code from an AST?

  I'm working on a pretty complex DSL that I want to compile down into a few high level languages. The whole process has been a learning experience. The compiler is written in java. I was wondering if anyone knew a best practice for the design of the code generator portion. I currently have everything parsed into an abstract syntax tree. I was thinking of using a template system, but I haven't researched that direction too far yet as I would like to hear some wisdom first from stack overflow. Thanks!

• is JsonP working with Opera, Chrome & Safari ?

  Hi, On a web site that I am building , when you log in (because the database is on an other server), I use json padding to check if the user as the right credentials. It's working flawlessly (ie7,ie8 & FF), until I tried it on chrome, safari & opera where it's a complete disaster. $.ajax({ type: "GET", dataType: "jsonp", url: "http://someurl.com", data: aRequestData, cache: false, error: function (XMLHttpRequest, textStatus, errorThrown) { // typically only one of textStatus or errorThrown // will have info alert("Error occured textStatus=" + textStatus + " errorThrown=" + errorThrown); }, success: function(data) { alert('success'); } }); Plain and simple and it works in browser window, however, to my big surprise it did not work in chrome, safari & opera, never got to the success alert. • What is the best database structure for this scenario?

  I have a database that is holding real estate MLS (Multiple Listing Service) data. Currently, I have a single table that holds all the listing attributes (price, address, sqft, etc.). There are several different property types (residential, commercial, rental, income, land, etc.) and each property type share a majority of the attributes, but there are a few that are unique to that property type. My question is the shared attributes are in excess of 250 fields and this seems like too many fields to have in a single table. My thought is I could break them out into an EAV (Entity-Attribute-Value) format, but I've read many bad things about that and it would make running queries a real pain as any of the 250 fields could be searched on. If I were to go that route, I'd literally have to pull all the data out of the EAV table, grouped by listing id, merge it on the application side, then run my query against the in memory object collection. This also does not seem very efficient. I am looking for some ideas or recommendations on which way to proceed. Perhaps the 250+ field table is the only way to proceed. Just as a note, I'm using SQL Server 2012, .NET 4.5 w/ Entity Framework 5, C# and data is passed to asp.net web application via WCF service. Thanks in advance.

• Truly declarative language?

  Hi all, Does anyone know of a truly declarative language? The behaviour I'm looking for is kind of what Excel does, where I can define variables and formulas, and have the formula's result change when the input changes (without having set the answer again myself) The behaviour I'm looking for is best shown with this pseudo code: X = 10 // define and assign two variables Y = 20; Z = X + Y // declare a formula that uses these two variables X = 50 // change one of the input variables ?Z // asking for Z should now give 70 (50 + 20) I've tried this in a lot of languages like F#, python, matlab etc, but every time i try this they come up with 30 instead of 70. Wich is correct from an imperative point of view, but i'm looking for a more declerative behaviour if you know what i mean. And this is just a very simple calculation. When things get more difficult it should handle stuff like recursion and memoization automagically. The code below would obviously work in C# but it's just so much code for the job, i'm looking for something a bit more to the point without all that 'technical noise' class BlaBla{ public int X {get;set;} // this used to be even worse before 3.0 public int Y {get;set;} public int Z {get{return X + Y;}} } static void main(){ BlaBla bla = new BlaBla(); bla.X = 10; bla.Y = 20; // can't define anything here bla.X = 50; // bit pointless here but I'll do it anyway. Console.Writeline(bla.Z);// 70, hurray! } This just seems like so much code, curly braces and semicolons that add nothing. Is there a language/ application (apart from Exel) that does this? Maybe I'm no doing it right in the mentioned langauges, or I've completely missed an app that does just this. I prototyped a language/ application that does this (along with some other stuff) and am thinking of productizing it. I just can't believe it's not there yet. Don't want to waste my time.
