  • System checks for disk drive error every time it boots

    When my disk space for the ubuntu installation partition was getting low, from a live cd, I used gparted to increase its volume capacity, but deleting another partition and merging it to the ubuntu partition. Since then onwards, I am receiving disk checking for errors at boot screen for my partitions, always. What seem to be causing this and how to fix it? Now the problem is that my corporate network requires me to use HTTP proxy for external internet connections. To ilustrate, this doesn't work: curl -v http://api.externalserver.com/login But this works: curl -v -x 11.22.11.22:8585 http://api.externalserver.com/login How can I make Apache use the corporate proxy for external internet requests?

  • Replacing hard drives in a LaCie 2big Network

    I have a LaCie 2big Network that currently has 2 500GB drives in it (mirror). I'd like to upgrade the drives to 1TB each using something like this I know that Lacie sells a 1TB drive designed for the 2big Network but it would seem to me that these drives are standard drives with the Lacie holder included. Do I need to use their drives or can I get my own? (Their customer support pushes me towards their drives) I'm assuming the device can format the drives for me when I add them in.

    I'm reading the FreeNAS userguide and came across the statement: Note that hardware RAID configured as JBOD may still detach disks that do not respond in time; and as such may require TLER/CCTL/ERC-enabled disks to prevent drive dropouts. I'm using a '3Ware 9550SX-8LP RAID Controller' and see quite a few stories of people successfully running raid5 on 7.2k consumer SATA drives without issue. Are detached disks only a theoretical problem, or should I expect this to be a common occurrence?

    I'm looking for something that can drop an image of Windows onto an uninitialized Hard Drive. I have new units that haven't even had the partition table created on them, and I'm trying to come up with a one (or two) step process for getting a disk image onto them. I've tried clonezilla, but that doesn't seem to like the lack of partition table, and as far as I can tell, Acronis doesn't work either.

  • Is it safe to swap SATA ports during hibernation?

    I hibernated my Windows 7 desktop PC, replaced the SATA cables of my 2 hard drives (without paying attention to which ports they were connected), and resumed the system. Everything appeared normal and it entered the desktop with all the applications previously open before hibernation. However, after a few seconds, the screen became frozen and the system no longer responded to anything (mouse/keyboard/network ping). Does anyone have a definitive answer on whether changing SATA ports of the HDDs during hibernation would crash a Windows 7 system?

  • W520 External monitor setup with Ubuntu 12.10

    I just installed a fresh Ubuntu 12.10 64-Bit Desktop on my Lenovo W520. It looks like there are a lot of challenges around making it work with out of the box Nouveau drivers or propriety Nvidia drivers or Intel GPU. I looked at couple of notes on how to make it work with Bumblebee with Optimus Nvidia. None of them seems to work for 12.10. Anybody has a solid answer on this? It seems like a lot of people are suffering from this. Here is my xrandr output. Let me know if you need any additional information.   • Installed 11.10 on shared drive, when other partition mounted, HDD shown full

    I just partitioned a 500GB HDD 50%-50%. I installed ubuntu 11.10 on one half and copied a load of files onto the other. When I don't mount the other partition, it shows I have used 12.1GB and have about 240GB free. The second I mount the other partition, I can't copy any files over and get a disk full message. There is about 10-20GB Free on the other partition. Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?

  • CentOS drive mapping? [on hold]

    This is the first time I am posting on this particular StackExchange forum and I hope that I am using the right one for the present question. Briefly, this is what I need to do I am running a web service where users can, amongst other things, upload and store files on the server. What I want to do is to hive off user file storage to a different location so my server (CentOS 64 bit) can concentrate on what it does best - server side scripting and database management. As things stand all user files go into subdirectories in a folder called stash that lies above DOC_ROOT. What I would like to do is Transparently detect all attempts to read/write to stash/sub_folder and get/set file data on a remote server - ideally the latter would be one which replicates files like a CDN so they can be delivered from the closest/fastest location based on where the user's location. Even nicer would be if for all read accesses I could provide a URL that allows the user's browser to fetch the relevant file directly without having to funnel them via my server. I am a relative newbie when it comes to this sort of thing so I hope that I have phrased this question adequately well. From the little searching I done I gathered that WebDAV can be used to map drives to a different location on the web so perhaps that is a starting point. But if that will work I need to Establish how to get WebDAV up and running on my CentOS 64 bit server. Ideally, identify a service that allows this kind of file storage and provides an API I can use in my own scripting. I'd much appreciate any help with this.

    I'm having the problem of needing a hard drive that can be written to by both a Mac and a PC. I have found that FAT32 might be an option, but as a video editor I often deal with files over the 4 GB limit. And since Mac doesn't read NTFS (very well with third-party programs) I'm considering FAT32. I'm curious, what happens when you try to write a file that is over 4 GB? What is a good way around this?
