• Will Software RAID And iSCSI Work For A SAN

  I am looking for a SAN solution, but can't afford even entry level solutions. Basically, the SAN is for development and a proof of concept product. The performance doesn't have to be amazing, but needs to be functional. My buddy says we should just setup sotware RAID and software iSCSI in Linux. Essentially I have a spare server with dual Xeon processors, 4GB of memory, and (2) 500GB 7200RPM drives. It's a bit old but working. I am sure there is reason people don't do software RAID and iSCSI, but will performance be usable? Thinking of configuring the drives in RAID 0 (for performance).

• Repositories for CentOS that don't suck?

  I'm used to using ubuntu/debian repositories and they are great. I can apt-get just about any package and it'll be there. I have not found this on centos. I called my hosting company and they suggest I install atomic turtle since it's compatible with cPanel. This didn't work when I tried to install git. yum install git ... No package git available Repeat the same thing for just about any package, the default repositories are pathetic. So perhaps there are other repositories I can use. Can anyone suggest any?   When I signed up for my Debian Linux VPS hosting and first logged on and invoked ps, there was the only user process running: sshd. As I can see, this was minimal Linux with only two things installed and configured: sshd and apt (plus all dependencies, of course). I want to build (or use existing) similar Linux distro, any advice on how to build (or pick) one? Googling "minimum linux", or "linux with sshd only" usually brings up Debian's netinstall, which is not what I want. Thanks in advance.

There is a problem with freetype2.h REQUIRED DEPENDENCIES numpy: 1.6.2 freetype2: found, but unknown version (no pkg-config) * WARNING: Could not find 'freetype2' headers in any * of '.', './freetype2'. Somebody had a similar problem ( How to install matplotlib on OS X?), and it was suggested to install pkg-config first. I did that with macports, but I still get the same warning. I used find to look for the headers, and they are definitely present in: /opt/X11/include/ft2build.h /usr/X11/include/ft2build.h How can I use those files to install matplotlib?

• IIS7 response size thresholds

  I have a customer who is attempting video playback via HTTP progressive download of very large files ( 1 GB). There is no problem once a file is cached at the edge via my CDN, but hits to my origin (first hits prior to edge-cache population) experience stalling and loss of sync between audio and video about an hour and a half into playback. This occurs pretty reliably at that point, suggesting that some threshold somehwere is getting hit. Are there IIS configuration knobs governing HTTP Response size? Other data points: I am unable to replicate this problem. I am looking at client bandwidth and last mile issues. I am looking at possible encoding recipe dependencies. But this problem never came up when we were using a "push" cache configuration (CDN-hosted origin), so something funky serverside at my origin seems like a likely culprit. Thanks ...

• USB Wireless keyboards not registering Ctrl Alt Delete when computer boots

  I've recently installed a new PC at work. Its a Dell Optiplex 9010. I bought a USB wireless keyboard and mouse from Dell and subsequently from Logitech to use with this PC. The Dell keyboard is a model KM632 and the logitech is an mk260. Both units work properly and have decent range. The issue is when the PC boots they keyboard (neither model) will register a Ctrl+Alt+Delete to the PC. I can say for sure the keyboards are still functional as the media keys will still produce a result (notably the sleep key on the mk260). My gut reaction is I'm dealing with an issue in the PC or Windows. I'm not sure where to start though. If I unplug and reinsert the USB dongle both units will work. Also, I don't use both they keyboards at the same time I bought the Logitech fearing the Dell unit was bad. Any ideas would be appreciated.

  Hello, I'm using apt-get install to install various software on my PC. I have a handful of PCs that needs the same software packages installed all over them. How can I get list of software installed via apt-get install and the sequence in what the packages are installed. Okay, the sequence is not so important since the package manager resolves dependencies... I want to create a script that once run installs all needed software on the other PCs. All of these PCs are Ubuntu default installations. It is obvious that the packages list must not include all the packages that are installed trough a default installation :) Also that list should not contain software installed via synaptic or dpkg if possible.

  I have a webservice /test/Service1.asmx in the same folder as a page /test/test.aspx. The page works fine but I get the message bellow for the services in the same location. I know the file is there and the url is correct, and I have added the script module and managed handler as well. • How to add exception for backup MX to tumgreyspf?

  I have an Ubuntu raring server running postfix/dovecot as an email server, with tumgreyspf doing greylisting and SPF checks. My problem is that I also have a backup MX server, that is supposed to store my emails temporarily, should my main server ever fails. It usually rejects receiving emails if it finds the main server online and functional. • What are these? Are they broken?

  Please excuse the poor image quality: What are the components that I've circled in red? The ones on the left look whole and solid. The ones on the right have cracked tops, and although this picture doesn't show it, there are small brown threads coming out of the top. Are the cracked ones broken, or is that supposed to happen? If they ARE broken, is this something I should worry about? This is a video card, and it appears to be fully functional: I'm using it while writing this post.

  I want to create a user account for each of the key programs installed on my debian server. For example, for the following programs: Tomcat Nginx Supervisor PostgreSQL This seems to be recommended based on my reading online. However, I want to restrict these user accounts as much as possible, so that they dont have a shell login, dont have access to the other programs and are as limited as possible but still functional. Would anyone mind telling me how this could be achieved? My reading so far suggests this: echo "/usr/sbin/nologin" /etc/shells useradd -s /usr/sbin/nologin tomcat But I think there may be a more complete way of doing it. EDIT: I'm using debian squeeze

• uninstall mysql on linux with plesk

  I'm having trouble uninstalling linux on my centOS 4 that has plesk. I'm actually trying to upgrade my Mysql 4.1 version to Mysql 5.0 using the following command: yum update mysql I get an error list of conflicted files however. When I try to remove mysql 4.1 and perform a clean install but when I use yum remove mysql* It deletes all of its dependencies and appearantly some of these are files needed by plesk, which causes my plesk to stop working. A did a full restore and everything is okay now, but how can I remove mysql without ruining plesk? I have also tried: rpm -qa | grep mysql to get a list of all files and remove them one by one, but there's a duplicate in that list, so I can't delete those (because it says it doesn't know which one to take). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Am I right to assume that fixing the FRS errors is #1, what do I need to do for that? set enable journalwrap auto restore in registry? Demote W2000 domain controller, should that have any implications for ISA? We have Forefront to be deployed but that's another day Transfer Domain Nameing Role to Exchange server (I know or think having an Exchange server as DC isn't best practive) We will be getting another server W2008 to replace current file server and I thought it could takeover all roles once deployed Demote W2k3 file server and then raise functional domain level to 2008 Am I missing anything other that the sense to walk away?   I'm attempting to get gltail set up on my local system to monitor logs remotely. I've got all the dependencies installed, but when I go to run gltail ... ./gl_tail configfile ../config.yaml I get this output: Missing gem net-ssh. • Windows won't ctrl+c and ctrl+v

  Using Ctrl+C and V I am unable to copy or paste anything. I have tried many different applications and still no luck. I am able to copy/paste via the shortcut menu when you right click the mouse. Ctrl+F works which means the Ctrl button is functional. I've tried restoring to an earlier restore point. I also ran SFC /SCANNOW (System File Checker) which did not find any errors. Ctrl+C and then right click and paste doesn't work either. I have tried with external and internal keyboard and still no luck. I've clicked on all the relevant search results from Google but none of them work for me. Does anyone know what may be causing this issue and how I can correct it? This problem comes and goes at random times.

  On windows 2000 and XP machines I used to be able to do the following: ntbackup backup systemstate c: /f e:\backups\machineName\machineName-full+systemstate_200101206.bkf This gave me a full backup of the system that I could use to do a system restore, after doing a barebones OS install. Windows 7 has a great utility for regular backups with alerting and all that stuff. It does not seem to have command line support. I'd like a backup solution for my Windwos 7 systems that has the following features: Is free Is open source (preferebly) Works while the system is booted and leaves the system functional (clonezilla is great for offline backups, and I use that too) Gives me a backup that is suited for a full system restore or partial system restore (ruling out most imaging software even if they could work while the system is booted via some sort of shadow copy voodoo) Can work via the command line Compression would be nice, the ability to pipe output would be better.

• Is it possible to temporarily disable non-global zones?

  I frequently need to install a package on the global zone for a quick test on a development box. When there are multiple prompts for one package I have to answer them for each zone. If the zone is not running then I need to wait for the zone to start up, answer the prompts, etc. This is particularly annoying when if I'm getting packages from http://www.sunfreeware.com and using the pkg-get utility which nicely pulls in dependencies for you. Can I disable the zones temporarily? I haven't found a way to do this. Thanks.

  I am attempting to install "uploadprogress" for a PHP application, and have failed on dependencies. Firstly, on phpize, then php-devel, then on autoconf and automake. I have tried yum, and various repositories, with no luck. I think it's to do with the ultra-tight but annoying set up they have on Rackspace Cloud servers. Does anyone know where I can find a repository that I can tell yum to look at that will contain php-devel, autoconf, automake, etc? Thanks ever so much. • Umbraco on Windows 7 64-bit

  I'm trying to install Umbraco CMS on Windows 7 64-bit and I get the following exception: [HttpException (0x80004005): Could not load file or assembly 'ImageManipulation, Version=1.0.2105.41209, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. Failed to grant minimum permission required. The application pool's trust mode is set to 'Full', all the user permissions are just as on other sites hosted on the same machine. I went through all relevant topics on Umbraco's forum, but all advices are about the trust level. How do I fix this?

• Speeding up Connection Between Computer and Wireless/Bridged Router

  Hey everyone, I looked through other questions, but didn't find useful responses. Our main computer has a dl speed of 6 Mbps, but some of our other computers are getting only 40-200 Kb! The router is wireless, but all computers are connected using a Netgear Wall-Plugged Bridge XE102, which transmits information via the building's powerline. It can't be the hardware itself, however, because some computers still manage decent speeds. The computers afflicted are running on Microsoft XP Service Packs 2 and 3, but so are computers that are totally functional. These speeds severely impede on productivity and are excruciatingly frustrating when trying to cram in time in the early hours. Could it be an issue with the computer? Location? Router?
