• Fast Society Creates Mini and Mobile Temporary Social Networks

  You’re out on the town or at a convention with a bunch of friends. How do you keep in touch with the entire group simultaneously? Fast Society offers a smartphone-based solution: a temporary social network for group talking, texting, and more. Fast Society was originally an iPhone only application and has recently updated to include and Android app too. The premise is simple: You set up a Fast Society group, link your friends into it, and for that night (or convention weekend) you’re all part of the same mini group. You can text the entire group, share pictures, set up sub-groups (let’s say that half your group is going to stay up late and party while half need to hit the rack to get up early for presentations, you can create a new group for the night owls to communicate), share your location, and send in-app and SMS messages to the entire group. • Hack Apart a Highlighter to Create UV-Reactive Flowers [Science]

  College students have long been hacking apart highlighters to create glowing bottles of booze to line their dorm room walls. Far more interesting, however, is the application of the hack to flowers. Many of you may remember a science class experiment from years gone by where in you put food coloring in a beaker and then some freshly cut white flowers; returning to the experiment a day later yielded flowers colored to match the dye you added. This little experiment relies on the same technique, only instead of blue food coloring the flowers suck up UV-reactive highlighter dye. • ANNOUNCEMENT: Oracle VM 3 Templates Available for Oracle Secure Global Desktop 4.62

  Today, we are proud to announce the general availability of Oracle VM 3 templates for Oracle Secure Global Desktop version 4.62.  With Oracle VM 3 templates, anyone using Oracle VM 3 need not download, install and configure the Operating System and product(s) individually. In this case, the supported operating system (Oracle Linux 5.7) and Oracle Secure Global Dekstop 4.62 product is packaged together into a template that one can easily import and clone as a VM into Oracle VM 3. This results in a nearly instant deployment and configuration of Oracle Secure Global Desktop within Oracle VM 3.  This means drastically reducing the evaluation and deployment time for Oracle Secure Global Desktop when leveraging Oracle VM 3. Feel free to give it a try! Login into the Oracle VM section at Oracle Software Delivery Cloud  (click on 'Cloud Portal (Main)' at the top-right) and: Under Oracle VM templates - x86 64-bit, look for Oracle VM 3 Template (OVF) for Oracle Secure Global Desktop Media Pack for x86_64 (64 bit) Oracle Secure Global Desktop 4.62 template for x86_64 (64 bit) with Oracle Linux 5.7 Under Oracle VM templates – x86 32 bit, look for Oracle VM 3 Template (OVF) for Oracle Secure Global Desktop Media Pack for x86 (32 bit) Oracle Secure Global Desktop 4.62 template for x86 (32 bit) with Oracle Linux 5.7 Download any of the above templates. Once you are done, you must First import the assembly (ova) file that you downloaded from Oracle Software Delivery Cloud Next, create a virtual machine template from the assembly And finally create a virtual machine from the template. Once the virtual machine is created and starts up, be sure to configure the networking parameters (hostname, IP address, netmask, gateway etc), and optional user parameters correctly. You must also enter a root password during first boot. And that's it - the Oracle Secure Global Desktop install script will pick up the networking parameters, prompt for confirmation and complete a default installation. Once the installation is complete, you may want to refer to the Oracle Secure Global Desktop Administration Guide to learn more about Oracle Secure Global Desktop and its capabilities.

• Move a SQL Azure server between subscriptions

  In September 2011 I published a blog post SSIS Reporting Pack v0.2 now available in which I made available the credentials of a sample database that one could use to test SSIS Reporting Pack. That database was sitting on a paid-for Azure subscription and hence was costing me about £5 a month - not a huge amount but when I later got a free Azure subscription through my MSDN Subscription in January 2012 it made sense to migrate the database onto that subscription. Since then I have been endeavouring to make that move but a few failed attempts combined with lack of time meant that I had not yet gotten round to it.That is until this morning when I heard about a new feature available in the Azure Management Portal that enables one to move a SQL Azure server from one subscription to another. Up to now I had been attempting to use a combination of SSIS packages and/or scripts to move the data but, as I alluded, I ran into a few roadblocks hence the ability to move a SQL Azure server was a godsend to me. I fired up the Azure Management Portal and a few clicks later my server had been successfully migrated, moreover the name of the server doesn't change and neither do any credentials so I have no need to go and update my original blog post either. • OEPE with ADF binding support available: Total Eclipse

  The current release of Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse, though in technology preview, brings Oracle ADF binding to the Eclipse IDE. You can download the Software from the link below: Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse (12.1.1.1.0) Technical Preview New June 2012 Certified on Windows 7/XP/Vista, MacOS, and Linux. Supported on JDK 6. For many Eclipse users, ADF is new and therefore I expect them to need guidance and help in case they run into issues they don't know how to recover from. Similar, ADF users familiar with Oracle JDeveloper that want to give OEPE a try, will find things different in Eclipse and thus may have questions.  For both audiences I suggest to post issues to the OEPE forum on the Oracle Technology Network: I'll extend my OTN monitoring to include the OEPE forum on a daily basis to learn about developer needs, requirements and - of course - to catch bugs that need to be filed. From my side this is a part-time involvement, which means that the more ADF questions show on the forum, the more help I could need in answering them. The OTN forum for JDeveloper in my opnion wouldn't be the right place to go to unless the question is a generic ADF question that is not dependent on the integration in Eclipse. • How to Clean Up and Fix Your Music Library with the MusicBrainz Database

  Over the years, some of us accumulate lots and lots of music files. Since these come from a variety of sources, they’re not always as neat as they could be. If your music library is in a bit of a jumble with tags missing, oddly named files and incomplete albums, read on to see how easy it is to make it neat once and for all. MusicBrainz is an online database that uses audio “fingerprints” to identify music tracks even when they’re incorrectly labelled. We’ll be using this database through a free client called Picard, available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. So first thing, head on over to Picard’s download page and get the installer. If you use Linux, you can install Picard using your package manager. Once you finish going through the installer, run Picard. Your firewall might pop up an alert telling you Picard is trying to access the Internet; you should agree to let Picard through. You will now see the main Picard interface. Click View > File browser (or press Ctrl+B). • Oracle Virtualbox does not open since upgrade

  After upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10, I have been unable to restart my Oracle virtualbox. jan@jan-System-Product-Name:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup sudo: /etc/init.d/vboxdrv: command not found Where do I go from here? Can anyone help, please? I tried to install virtualbox via these commands: echo "deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian $(lsb_release -sc) contrib" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/virtualbox.list wget -q http://download.virtualbox.org/virtu...racle_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add - sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install virtualbox-4.2 Attempts to install via package manager vbox would not start. These error reports are received: Because the USB 2.0 controller state is part of the saved VM state, the VM cannot be started.To fix this problem, either install the 'Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack' or disable USB 2.0 support in the VM settings (VERR_NOT_FOUND). Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) Component: Console Interface: IConsole {db7ab4ca-2a3f-4183-9243-c1208da92392} I installed the extension pack, no change in result. I have added myself as user, but the error report says user must be added, when I redo add user, it says user is already added. The following outputs were also received:   Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Nuwe skelm. Implementation of the USB 2.0 controller not found! I cannot access the USB 2.0 setting to disable it. Where do I go from here, please?

• How Do I Print Photos?

  Other than for Windows in Ubuntu there are no fancy utilities provided from printer manufacturers to print photos. I am aware of Gnome Photo Printer and of Photoprint, the first being easy to handle, the latter having more options. However I wonder if there are any other or maybe even better alternatives (including plugins) to perform the following tasks: Print photos in the best photo-resolution the driver offers Adjust paper size for standard values of photo papers Choose paper tray if the printer has more than one Print out multiple photos on one page including mixed sizes (grids) Multiple prints with same settings Borderless printing if the printer is capable of this Any additional options like pre-processing for color correction or noise reduction would be nice to have but are not so essential. Update According to this spec it seems not to so easy to accomplish the simple task of printing photos. Indeed all applications I have gone through have major drawbacks that make printing photos almost impossible. Below I will list what put me off using them for photo printing: Gnome Photo Printer: no thumbnails, no grids Photoprint: does not keep settings, GUI broken, no standard photo size, no thumbs Eye Of Gnome: no multiple pages, no grids Gimp + Images Grid Layout: far too many steps to finally find that prints are always different to their previews. F-Spot: no grids Picasa 3: no grids, very few fixed paper sizes, 300 dpi only flPhoto: strange GUI, no thumbs, no printer settings, did not print at all Windows: Ooops - everything works fine! But I want Ubuntu to do this! After half a pack of ink cartridges and half a pack of photo paper cards I am getting tired of testing. At least Gimp and Picasa looked promising but both don't keep their promise when it comes to printing. I'd already be happy to quickly print a few photos with EOG if bug #80220 was fixed - but it's still on "wishlist".

By default it opens a new tab with all your tab thumbnails, we found it was more convenient to switch it to pop-up mode (wherein it pops up a smaller menu from the icon itself instead of a whole new tab).
