• Robust way to display an image with one fixed dimension

  Lets say that we have an image uploaded by the user, the upload script limits the mb but not the image size (so could be any proportion, 600X200,200X350, and so...). Im already showing this image in one part on my site using the twitter bootstrap image handler written on css, thats good for a profile picture, the problem is that now I want that image to be a cover (like facebook/twitter cover image), my site is responsive so the width of the cover is 900px or 100% if the screen resolution is less than 900px wide. The height is always fixed to 200px. So I know there is a way to control the correct image display using CSS (maybe with jquery too) but Im not a front-end dev, Im a php dev and I dont want to use server side scripts for doing this. So im looking for suggestions or pieces of codes (css, javascript) to start with, I belive that it have to be an already made solution for this, but I dont find any on google. Thanks for any advice!

• Can I do this in only one query ?

  Merry christmas everyone, I Know my way around SQL but I'm having a hard time figuring this one out. First here are my tables (examples) User id name friend from //userid to //userid If user 1 is friend with user 10 then you a row with 1,10. User 1 cannot be friend with user 10 if user 10 is not friend with user 1 so you have 1,10 10,1 It may look weird but I need those two rows per relations. Now I'm trying to make a query to select the users that have the most mutual friend with a given user. For example User 1 is friend with user 10,9 and 7 and user 8 is friend with 10,9 and 7 too ,I want to suggest user 1 to invite him (like facebook). I want to get like the 10 first people with the most mutual friend. The output would be like User,NumOfMutualFriends I dont know if that can be done in a single query ?   Apologies for the vague question. Here it is: I have a table object created by LINQ to SQL. I am copying entries from one table to an "archive" table that has all the columns of the original, plus a couple extra ones. It feels sloppy to iterate through every object and manually define the mapping like: foreach (oldTable in dbContextOldTables) { var newTable = new NewTable(); newTable.TableID = oldTable.ID; newTable.Title = oldTable.Title; ... • jquery ajax call: multiple links load data into one div

  I have a dynamically generated list of links. Each link will request a different page to load. Depending on the link clicked I want it to fill the div with an ajax .load call. The thing is I want all links to reset and fill the same div. I am having trouble doing this without making a seperate div for each link, which isn't what I'm looking for. Both of them have the same size and there is relationship 1:1 between elements in the lists based on ID. I know that best solution would be fetching data in one DB query but that's possible right now. So my question is, what is the best way to join these lists into let's say List<Object3>?

• Create multiple columns on one sheet from 1 column on another with logic

  I am new to VBA and I am struggling trying to make this work. I am in need of a macro that will process each cell\column on Sheet1 and put the results on Sheet2. I'm sure this is pretty easy for those who are more advanced with VB code. It contains many columns.. Anytime we encounter a — or an empty cell, we populate the cell with -999 (see the example on Sheet2) on the first column, which contains "0-2". Then we create 2 new columns and populate them with 0 on the first column and 2 on second column (see example on Sheet2). If a value is found on only one side, we then populate both sides with the same number. • LINQ to Entites: Doing a count over one-to-many relationships

  I have a couple of tables where there are one to many relationships. Let's say I have a Country table, a State table with a FK to Country, and a City table with a FK to State. I'd like to be able to create a count of all Cities for a given country, and also a count of cities based on a filter - something like: foreach( var country in Model.Country ) { total = country.State.All().City.All().Count() ; filtered = country.State.All().City.Any(c=>c.field == value).Count(); } Obviously, this doesn't work - is there any way to do this?

• couchdb: one database per account vs all in one database w. a namespace / property

  I'm modelling a document generation system in couchdb. It semi-automates the production of proposal and presentation documents from managable document fragments. Much like, say, Basecamp, it breaks down very simply into self-contained data per 'account'. Each account has multiple users, projects, documents, etc. However, nothing should be shared between accounts. I can see two ways of doing this: one couchdb database per account use a namespace / property to identify the account It seems to me that the first approach is conceptually sound and potentially has security and partitioning advantages. However, it seems to me to restrict some cross-database data querying (that I don't have a use case for now but you never know...) and to make updating views potentially require an awful lot of writes. Does anyone experienced with this kind of decision have any advice?

• Removing repeated characters, including spaces, in one line

  I currently have a string, say $line='55.25040882, 3,,,,,,', that I want to remove all whitespace and repeated commas and periods from. Currently, I have: $line =~ s/[.,]{2,}//; $line =~ s/\s{1,}//; Which works, as I get '55.25040882,3', but when I try $line =~ s/[.,\s]{2,}//; It pulls out the ", " and leaves the ",,,,,,". I want to retain the first comma and just get rid of the whitespace. Is there a way to elegantly do this with one line of regex? Please let me know if I need to provide additional information.

So i have the 'id' of the child, I want to get all available parents (iterating up the chain until we reach 0 "Home"). There could be any number or child rows going to an unlimited depth. Currently I am using an SQL call for each parent, this is messy. Is there a way in SQL to do this all on one query?

• One application instance for two domain name

  Hello, I have two web applications in ASP.NET which are quite the same (same business logic, same DAL, same DB scheme but different instance). The only thing that I need to change is the design (logo, color,...) and the text (global and local resource) to adress two separate business sector. We cannot "subdomain" the application because we need the two app "seems to be" independant. Is it a good idea to run only one instance for the 2 web applications. For example : I will have 2 hostnames : mycompagny.com and mycompagny2.com and I will put an HTTP Module which will set a string which will be propagated in my application like 'company' and 'company2'. I will instanciate the dal only once but the connection string will change depending on the string 'company' or 'company2'. Any pros and cons ? Any other alternatives ?

  I am developing a website that will manage data for multiple entities. No data is shared between entities, but they may be owned by the same customer. A customer may want to manage all their entities from a single "dashboard". So should I have one database for everything, or keep the data seperated into individual databases? Is there a best-practice? What are the positives/negatives for having a: database for the entire site (entity has a "customerID", data has "entityID") database for each customer (data has "entityID") database for each entity (relation of database to customer is outside of database) Multiple databases seems like it would have better performance (fewer rows and joins) but may eventually become a maintenance nightmare.

• Counting multiple rows in MySQL in one query

  I currently have a table which stores a load of statistics such as views, downloads, purchases etc. for a multiple number of items. To get a single operation count on each item I can use the following query: SELECT , COUNT() FROM stats WHERE operation = 'view' GROUP BY item_id This gives me all the items and a count of their views. I can then change 'view' to 'purchase' or 'download' for the other variables. However this means three separate calls to the database. Is it possible to get all three in one go?

  How can i get a particular line in a 3 gig text file. The lines are delimited by \n. And i need to be able to get any line on demand. How can this be done? Only one line need be returned. And i would not like to use any system calls. Note: There is the same question elsewhere regarding how to do this in bash. I would like to compare it with the PHP equiv.

  I'm doing operation on a dataset containing data from a sql table named Test_1 and then get the updated records using the DataSet.GetChanges(DataRowState.Modified) function. Then i try to save the dataset containing the updated records on a different table than the source one (the table is names Test and has the same structure as Test_1) using the following statement: sqlDataAdapter.Update(changesDataSet,"Test"); I'm getting the following error : Update unable to find TableMapping['Test'] or DataTable 'Test' I'm new to ado.net and don't even know if it"s something possible. Any advice is welcome. Just to provide a bit of context. ETL jobs are importing data in temp table with same structure as the original but with _jobid suffix. Right after a rule engine is doing validation before updating the original table.

  Hi, When I read one char* from std::cin and I want to write it to std::cout, it prints until it finds a \0 in memory. So what did was: char c; cin >> c; char* pChar = &c; pChar++; *pChar = '\0'; println(&c); // My own method: void println(char * str) { cout << str << endl; } But I don't think this is a safe action. Is there a safer way to do this?

  As a programmer of data-entry forms of all kinds, I often find myself making fields for things like Country: <choose from list>, State: <choose from list>, Race/Ethnicity: <choose from list>. Consider: Perhaps a list the 50 United States names is an easy thing to find (does one include DC?) , but the countries are not. Nearly every site you find has a differing list with all of the political goings on over the years, and they become outdated quickly. What's the best/common practice regarding population of these kinds of lists? Where does this data come from if it's not given in the specs?

All that I can currently think of is that you get mixed revision numbers (so what?), and that you can't use svn:externals unless the repository is actually external. (i think?) The reason I ask is because I'm considering consolidating my multiple repos into one, since my SVN host has started charging per repo.

  I found some helpful stuff on this site but my input file is different from the examples already posted and I cannot make the leap in an efficient manner. My input file looks like this: sample_dude data1 data2 data3 data4 sample_lady data5 data6 data7 data8 sample_dude data9 data10 data11 data12 sample_child data13 data14 data15 data16 I want to create a separate file for each sample with all the data columns. For example, one file would be called sample_dude.txt and look like this: data1 data2 data3 data4 data9 data10 data11 data12 There is an unknown number of samples but always just four data columns.
