• Another JavaOne Latin America around the corner

  For the second year in a row, JavaOne is traveling to Latin America : São Paulo on December 6-8, 2011 at the Transamerica Expo Center. As with any such event, participants will be able to attend the Strategy, Technical and Community Keynotes, a large number of Sessions (including Hands-On Labs) which include a good number of local speakers chosen with a dedicated Call for Papers, and wander around the Exhibition Hall. • Switching to Kubuntu results in low graphics mode

  I looked at some screen shots of Kubuntu and I liked it so I went to Synaptic and installed the kubuntu-desktop package and set my desktop window manager to kde and rebooted. After reboot, I saw Kubuntu splash screen then this message; running in Low Graphical Mode. Then I was not able to dismiss the message because my mouse did not work Seemingly How to Geek had the same problem http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/ubuntu/install-kde-kubuntu-on-ubuntu/ . You will probably see that your xorg.conf file was backed up to xorg.conf.1 during the ?KDE / Kubuntu installation. Just copy the xorg.conf.1 back to xorg.conf, reboot, and everything should be fine. I also tried to do that by booting into recovery mode and then droping onto the shell. But it would not let me rename, came up with some error.

• Broke my sudoers password, how do I reset it without using sudo?

  I thought it would be a good idea to finally take the password off my little netbook since it has never actually been of any use, and has mostly just slowed down . But when I went to change my password, there wasn't even an option to make it blank, and any attempt to make it a few easy characters was met with "Password too weak". So I did what any good geek would do and popped open the terminal, read the manual entry for passwd and quickly used the -d option to remove the password from my account. It all went well for a couple days (I even managed to also make my keychain password blank) until I tried to update the thing. My sudoers password is not blank, and it's not my old password. I have no idea what it is. How do I reset it (or even better, make it blank) without the use of the sudo command?

  I have read these related questions: I'm a Subversion geek, why should I consider or not consider Mercurial or Git or any other DVCS? git for personal (one-man) projects. Overkill? ...and I understand why git is useful. What I don't understand is why tools like git-svn that allow git to integrate with svn are useful. When, for example, a team is working with svn, or any other centralised SCM, why would a member of the team opt to use git-svn? Are there any practical advantages for a developer that has to synchronize with a centralized repository?

  I have tried upgrading in the past with zero success doing a backup of stuff and futilely attempting to enter my stuff into the new version. My email accounts and folders, my bookmarks and web browser info and of course my photos. In the past I have received messages that the back up files were done using version XXX and cannot be read by the new system, as an example. I need a hand-holding tutorial to go from 11.04 to 12.10.   I have decided, as a arrogant geek, to build my own home ventilation and heating system, and will try to do this as my little project. I have always been annoyed with the lack of good ventilation systems at work, so I accept building my own is arrogant. Does anyone know about a device I can interact with that allows me to get temperature and humidity that I can interact with using C#? I cannot get it from the Internet because I need to get the humidity from my server "room", so I can control the dehumidifier there. Similar with temperature, outside is not that important. It would be a huge plus if the sensors had some sort of wireless access.

• HP Blade ILO not responding in chassis ILO

  I have just started at a new company and I am inspecting their current server config. The HP 480c blades in a c7000 chassis aren't responding to ILO, although the chassis ILO is working fine. I have a feeling the last sysadmin configured the blades ILO as static IPs and it is not responding correctly. The servers are sitting in a datacenter and I'm hoping to be able to fix this remotely. Is there a way that I can change the ILO static IPs for the blades remotely? If not and I do have to go onsite, how do I change the IP addresses of the ILO for the blades? (Sorry I'm not very familiar with HP servers) thanks for you help!

• SQL 2008 Database tuning advisor won’t start

  For some reason I can't get DTA to connect to my development machine. It connects to a remote DB just fine but when I point it to my dev machine I get an error saying: Failed to initialize MSDB database for tuning (exit code: -1073741819). I'm pretty sure it's not a permissions issue since I've used profiler to capture what it's doing and all of the commands it's run so far look fine and are being run under my account which is associated with the sysadmin role, when I run them in sql management studio they go through fine. I'm pretty convinced that the problem is related to creating the objects in MSDB that are used by DTA but I tried creating these manually (I found scripts on the web) and it just seems to push the problem along the line slightly. I'm going out of my mind - have even tried reinstalling SQL but that's not fixed it. I'm using SQL 2008 with SP1 (10.0.2531) on windows server 2008 (patched up to date). SAVE ME!!!!!

  Hi, I am sysadmin for a small business with 30 clients. We have a server running windows 2003 and all the client-computers run windows XP. Now this is not an important issue, but it would be nice if it worked. My personal (home) computer is running windows 7 RC. When I bring my home-computer to work and log into the network with domain\username it logs me in just fine. Although, approving my profile, letting me into the network, including all network drives and printers, it does not download the profile fully. I do believe it might be getting the roaming profiles. So all my user- items, documents etc. attached to the profile does not show up on Windows 7. Is there any way to make it fully download the profile? as it does with Windows XP.

• mysql UDF : fopen = permission denied

  Hi All, this is question I already asked on SO but I wonder if this could be a SysAdmin problem. I'm trying to create a mysql UDF function , this function calls "fopen/fclose" to read a flat file stored in /data. But using errno (yes, I know it is bad in a MT program...) I can see that the function cannot open my file: "Permission denied" I tried to do a chmod -R 755 /data (as well as 777, chown -R mysql:mysql /data etc...) but it didn't change anything. when I copied the flat file to /tmp : OK, my UDF was able to 'fopen' the file. • How to allow users to monitor performance of a set of servers without touching every server?

  I'm not a sysadmin, so this may be trivial. We have about 20 Windows Server 2008 R2 VMs we want to monitor centrally using Perfmon. The only issue is that the user account that's going to be doing the monitoring is not (and I assume will never be) in the Administrators group. The servers, and the user account (currently one, but could be more) are all on the same domain. Right now we're running a pilot with 5 of the servers, touching each VM manually to set the permissions, which is already getting cumbersome to manage. If we decide to roll this out to all the servers, we need a scalable solution to control access. What is the most flexible way to accomplish this? I'd like a solution that would work with 200 servers just as easily as the 20 servers we have now.

  I recieve the following error when I try to configure SharePoint 2010 Server: "Cannot connect to the database master at SQL server at [computer.domain]. The database might not exist, or the current user does not have permission to connect to it." • CentOS - PHP - Yum Install with Custom ./configure params

  I have successfully configured and compiled php on my dev server, and works great, but after talking to a sysadmin buddy, he informed that custom compiles of the latest builds are not recommended for production (or even development) systems. He noted a situation where they custom configured and compiled PHP 5.3.6, only to find that there was some issue with a low-level Postgres driver, so they had to revert back to 5.3.3. So I am considering going back to yum to install PHP, however I have several custom configuration settings and was wondering if it's possible to pass or configure how PHP will be compiled through YUM? • Building php-devel package from source (php 5.3)

  I am building PHP 5.3 rpm packages for our custom CentOS 5 yum repo. I am fairly new to building rpms to be honest, but I have had moderate success downloading the SRPMS for a given package and repackaging them using "rpmbuild --rebuild" command. One thing that is throwing me off though is how to satisfy the php-devel package.. I obviously have the PHP 5.3 source files as I was able to build my php-common and other packages with it. But I am not sure how to actually build the devel package! From what I understand, I already have most of what I need - the latest php 5.3.5 source tarball. However I am not sure how to build the correct .spec file to satisfy what I need. If you are knowledgeable in this area, would you mind helping a fellow sysadmin out? Sharing a spec file or at least giving me some pointers on how to approach it. Thanks much serverfault community! -BajaBob

• What are some hosted MySQL solutions?

  I would like to host a MySQL database somewhere. The basic solution would be to get a VPS, but then I am stuck doing all the sysadmin stuff. It's not terribly difficult if you are not doing anything fancy, but if something goes wrong (like a security breach), it may be hard to resolve or even diagnose in the first place. On the other end of the spectrum, I found Xeround and Amazon RDS. Xeround is not exactly standard MySQL. Amazon seems a bit complex to get started (which is weird because they specifically say it is "simple to deploy"). Why is there nothing in the middle? Is there no demand for a basic hosted MySQL solution?

• ms sql 2005 server role problem

  On one of our sql 2005 servers we are no longer able to give any users server roles (ex. sysadmin). It appears to be successful both through the UI and through code. But when we check in the db and in the UI the role is unchecked and not shown for the user in the master db. Permissions don't seem to be the issue as we are testing this as system administrator levels of access. There are also no errors in the log. Any ideas? Thanks, Brandon

  My php's mail() function just stopped working a short while ago. It's started returning FALSE. I am not much of a sysadmin so please forgive my ignorance. I set my php.ini send_path option to: "sendmail_path = /usr/sbin/sendmail -t -i" and restarted apache. Then, I learnt how to test sendmail like so: sudo /usr/sbin/sendmail -bv [email protected] [email protected]... deliverable: mailer esmtp, host example.com., user [email protected] The example email is a real mail box. I have also seen unknown user messages in the mail log. Can anyone please help me debug this? Cheers, Rim

• don't have "sufficient right" to my own TFS 2010

  after I removed an active directory domain service, I lost all my accounts...then not only the SQL server and the TFS stopped working, the TFs administration console also says that I don't have sufficient right to add members... Now I manage to get the SQL server kind of running, and I can see my project in team explorer, but the TFS still says SQL access denied, SQL server says I don't have permission to add new logins or add my admin account to sysadmin, the TFS still give me the TF246017 tfs could not connect to the database and I don't have sufficient right to add member to any of the project groups... Anybody knows how can I get all these permissions back....?

• Virtualmin Configuration

  I am trying to get Virtualmin setup and have reached a point where my noobish sysadmin skills aren't getting the job done. This is the message I get now when I try and refresh the configuration of Virtualmin. BIND DNS server is installed, and the system is configured to use it. However, the default master DNS server XXXXXX is not a fully qualified domain name. Sendmail is only accepting SMTP connections on the following ports : 127.0.0.1 port smtp. Email from other systems on the Internet will not be accepted. This can be changed in the Sendmail Mail Server module. Please advise what I need to do to get Sendmail configured properly. Thanks!
