• What packages do I need to compile .tex documents using XeLaTeX?

  Hi I'm aware of the existence of similar threads on this forum. But any of replies mach to my problem. I'm using Ubuntu 10.4 and I hadn't problems with fonts till I've decided to use XeLaTeX instead of LaTeX (cf http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/12347/typesetting-a-document-using-arabic-script/12358#12358). The problem is that I'm not able to compile any .tex document using XeLaTeX, as well as properly display XeLaTeX documentation. As I've learn thanks to mentioned thread, XeLaTeX uses the fonts availables in general in the system. I was trying yo read fontspec documentation, but it opens in pdf with a lot of white gaps and terminal output (quite long) consist mostly of errors. Done Note, selecting ttf-mscorefonts-installer instead of msttcorefonts ttf-mscorefonts-installer is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. maria@maria-laptop:~$ It seems that is not a usual problem for use of XeLaTeX; nobody in the mentioned thread suggested instalation of anything else than TeX Live. • Critical Threads Optimization

  Background One of the more common issues we've been seeing in the field is the growing difficulty in optimizing performance of multi-threaded applications. A good portion of this difficulty is due to the increasing complexity of modern processors that present various degrees of sharing relationships between hardware components. Take any current CMT processor and you'll find any number of CPUs sharing execution pipelines, floating point units, caches, etc. Consequently, applying the traditional recipe of one software thread for each CPU will have varying degrees of success, according to the layout of the underlying hardware. On top of this increasing complexity we've also seen processors with features that aim at dynamically resourcing software threads according to their utilization. Intel's Turbo Boost allows processors to increase their operating frequency if there is enough thermal headroom available and the processor isn't fully utilized. More recently, the SPARC T4 processor introduced dynamic threading, allowing each core to dynamically allocate more resources to its active CPUs. Both cases are in essence recognizing that current processors will be running a wide mix of workloads, some will be designed for throughput, others for low latency. The hardware is providing mechanisms to dynamically resource threads according to their runtime behavior. We're very aware of these challenges in Solaris, and have been working to provide the best out of box performance while providing mechanisms to further optimize applications when necessary. The Critical Threads Optimzation was introduced in Solaris 10 8/11 and Solaris 11 as one such mechanism that allows customers to both address issues caused by contention over shared hardware resources and explicitly take advantage of features such as T4's dynamic threading. What it is The basic idea is to allow performance critical threads to execute with more exclusive access to hardware resources. For example, when deploying an application that implements a producer/consumer model, it'll likely be advantageous to give the producer more exclusive access to the hardware instead of having it competing for resources with all the consumers. In the case of a T4 based system, we may want to have a producer running by itself on a single core and create one consumer for each of the remaining CPUs. With the Critical Threads Optimization we're extending the semantics of scheduling priorities (which thread should run first) to include priority over shared resources (which thread should have more "space"). Now the scheduler will not only run higher priority threads first: it will also provide them with more exclusive access to hardware resources if they are available. How does it work ? Using the previous example in Solaris 11, all you'd have to do would be to place the producer in the Fixed Priority (FX) scheduling class at priority 60, or in the Real Time (RT) class at any priority and Solaris will try to give it more "hardware space". On both Solaris 10 8/11 and Solaris 11 this can be achieved through the existing priocntl(1,2) and priocntlset(2) interfaces. If your application already assigns these priorities to performance critical threads, there's no additional step you need to take. One important aspect of this optimization is that it requires some level of idleness in the system, either as a result of sizing the application before hand or through periods of transient idleness during runtime. If the system is fully committed, the scheduler will put all the available CPUs to work.Best practices If you're an application developer, we encourage you to look into assigning the right priorities for the different threads in your application. Solaris provides different scheduling classes (Time Share, Interactive, Fair Share, Fixed Priority and Real Time) that offer different policies and behaviors. It is not always simple to figure out which set of threads are critical to the performance of a workload, and it may not always be feasible to take advantage of this optimization, but we believe that this can be correctly (and safely) done during development. Overall, the out of box performance in Solaris should meet your workload's requirements. If you are looking into that extra bit of performance, then the Critical Threads Optimization may be what you're looking for.

• Help Protect Your Children with the CEOP Enhanced Internet Explorer 8

  Do you want to make Internet Explorer safer and more helpful for you and family? Then join us as we look at the CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre) enhanced version of Internet Explorer 8. Setting CEOP Up We chose to install the whole CEOP pack in order to have access to complete set of CEOP Tools. The install process will be comprised of two parts…it will begin with CEOP branded windows showing the components being installed… Note: The components can be downloaded separately for those who only want certain CEOP components added to their browser. Then it will move to the traditional Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 install windows. One thing that we did notice is that here you will be told that you will need to restart your computer but in other windows a log off/log on process is mentioned. Just to make certain that everything goes smoothly we recommend restarting your computer when the installation process is complete. In the EULA section you can see the versions of Windows that the CEOP Pack works with. Once you get past the traditional Microsoft install windows you will be dropped back into the CEOP branded windows. CEOP in Action After you have restarted your computer and opened Internet Explorer you will notice that your homepage has been changed. When it comes to your children that is not a bad thing in this instance. It will also give you an opportunity to look through the CEOP online resources. For the moment you may be wondering where everything is but do not worry. First you can find the two new search providers in the drop-down menu for your “Search Bar” and select a new default if desired. The second thing to look for are the new links that have been added to your “Favorites Menu”. These links can definitely be helpful for you and your family. The third part will require your “Favorites Bar” to be visible in order to see the “Click CEOP Button”. If you have not previously done so you will need to turn on subscribing for “Web Slices”. Click on “Yes” to finish the subscription process. Clicking on the “CEOP Button” again will show all kinds of new links to help provide information for you and your children. Notice that the top part is broken down into “topic categories” while the bottom part is set up for “age brackets”…very nice for helping you focus on the information that you want and/or need. Looking for information and help on a particular topic? Clicking on the “Cyberbullying Link” for example will open the following webpage with information about cyberbullying and a link to get help with the problem. Need something that is focused on your child’s age group? Clicking on the “8-10? Link” as an example opened this page. Want information that is focused on you? The “Parent? Link” leads to this page. The “topic categories & age brackets” make the CEOP Button a very helpful and “family friendly” addition to Internet Explorer. Perhaps you (or your child) want to conduct a search for something that is affecting your child. As you type in a “search term” both of the search providers will provide helpful suggestions for dealing with the problem. We felt that these were very nice suggestions in both instances here… Conclusion We have been able to give you a good peek at what the CEOP Tools can do but the best way to see how helpful it can be for you and your family is try it for yourself. Your children’s safety and happiness is worth it. By type safety, I mean operations that do not make sense should not even be expressible in first place. Using the read operation on a non-read-able device ought to cause a type error at compile time, similarly for using the write operation on a non-write-able device, and so on. • Does the deprecation of mysql_* functions in PHP carry over to other Databases(MSSQL)?

  I'm not talking about MySQL, I'm talking about Microsoft SQL Server I've been aware of PDO for quite some time now, standard mysql functions are dangerous and should be avoided. http://php.net/manual/en/function.mysql-connect.php But what about the MSSQL function in PHP? They are, for most purposes, identical sets of functions, but the PHP page describing mssql_* carries no warning of deprecation. http://us.php.net/manual/en/function.mssql-connect.php There are PDO drivers available for MSSQL, but they aren't quite as readily available or used as the MySQL drivers. Ideally, it looks to me like I should get them working and move from mssql_* to PDO like I have with MySQL, but is it as big of a priority? Is there some hidden safety to MSSQL that means it's exempt from all of the mysql_* hatred as of late? Or is its obscurity as a backend the only reason there hasn't been more PDO encouragement?

• Backup files with rsync: error 23

  Hi I'm trying to make a backup of my /home to transfer all data from one computer to another. I wanted to save the backup on the same computer and than transfere it to another one. For safety reasons, I'm trying to learn how does it work on the computer without a lot of data (the new one) to be sure I won't delete something instead of copying it. I've run in terminal: sudo rsync -avz /home/maria /home/guest/backup and I had as the result: sent 58797801 bytes received 23050 bytes 4705668.08 bytes/sec total size is 100202958 speedup is 1.70 rsync error: some files/attrs were not transferred (see previous errors) (code 23) at main.c(1060) [sender=3.0.7] I've tried once again, with the same result. I have no idea, which files were not transferred, what makes the whole backup useless for me (I wanted to do it automatically in order not to forget about something and loose it). On both computers I have the same system (Ubuntu 10.04). Rsync version: 3.0.7-1ubuntu1. Thanks for any tips

• Why are the colors worse on Ubuntu 12.04 than on Windows 7 on my Sony Vaio E-Series?

  The colours look "lacking" and ever slightly blueish and rather washed-out and lacking in dimension. Graphics are ok - this page for example looks fine - but if I view something like a news site with high quality photos, the experience is not optimal and is noticeably inferior to Windows 7. Oddly, when I install Ubuntu as a VM on VirtualBox in Windows, the colours look as I expect them to. It's only on my dual-boot version of Ubuntu that they look wrong (not Wubi, although a previous Wubi-based installation had the same problem). Now, I have the proprietary ATI driver and I can use amdcccle to get the colours closer to what they should be, but I can't seem to do anything about colour depth. The depth settings in Xorg are all 24. I tried changing all three mentions of 24 to 32 but was forced into safety mode. Fortunately, I remembered where I'd been tinkering and got the file set back to 24.

• How can I remove the security/malicious user warning from my website?

  I have a domain name tradespring.net, and www.tradespring.net that redirect to my heroku app with a CNAME record. However when I first try to access these sites it gives me a malicious warning This is probably not the site you are looking for! blah blah blah then "proceed anyways" or "back to safety" Its because my browser realizes that it is redirecting. How can I make sure anyones browser (not just my browser) trusts this site and my heroku app? I dont think i need an SSL certificate because this site is not sending sensitive info (credit card info, ect.).

We made a project on javaforge.com, created an svn repository and started developing our app. Right now we are really far with our project, but somehow we never worried if our project is really safe on such free development tool like javaforge ? I mean, what if our project would earn some money and the source code become valuable ? Could it be stolen or could somebody take it over ? We want to be sure that we are not wasting our time and want to be really sure about our project safety. Is it possible to safely develop a project in such free repository ? • Compiz Error After Emerald Install

  Salutations! So, once again, I fell to the allure of the window decorator emerald. Where, just like the first time around, (I know I know) upon attempting to back out of emerald to the safety of compiz I'm faced with a problem. Seemingly after several minutes or after opening Chrome any window that isn't maximised has it's borders removed (so there's no close, minimise and maximise etc buttons). I can get them breifly back if I reload compiz via fusion-icon. After a brief chat on IRC it appears compiz is crashing. • Is NTFS-3G safe for writing?

  These days, I have to use the NTFS-3G driver to write to an NTFS drive (which will later be used in Windows). But I still remember the olde times of Linux ntfs driver which clearly said in the docs: 'If you write to an ntfs volume, run our special program afterwards which will clean up the damage done.' So, I read through the man, the docs, the Tuxera site and Askubuntu and found no discussion of the write-safety of NTFS-3G. The only thing that was mentioned somewhere is that the driver doesn't support the NTFS journal. So, the question is, can I use NTFS-3G and be sure that I will later read what I have written to the files? Won't, for example, Windows find the journal entries missing and 'clean up' the data according to its own faulty understanding?

I am using asynchronous server and handle data when it comes. Now I am thinking about extending requests with some kind of session. What is the best way to define session? Get cookie when registered and use token as long as session runs with each request? Should I implement timeout for token? Is there alternative methods? Can I cache tokens to same origin requests? What could I use on client side (Web browser)? How about safety? What techniques I should use to throw away requests with malformed data, to big data, without choking server down? Should I worry?

• Displaying wait cursor in while backgroundworker is running

  During the start of my windows application, I have to make a call to a web service to retrieve some default data to load onto my application. During the load of the form, I run a backgroundworker to retrieve this data. I want to display the wait cursor until this data is retrieved. How would I do this? I've tried setting the wait cursor before calling the backgroundworker to run. When I report a progress of 100 then I set it back to the default cursor. The wait cursor comes up but when I move the mouse it disappears. Environment: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit VS2010 C# .NET 4.0 Windows Forms EDIT: I am setting the cursor the way Jay Riggs suggested.
