• Services - Separate Sites or One Site - Impact on SEO

  I have a client who is a lawyer that specializes in Criminal Defense and DUI, however, he does not show up well in Google. In researching the sites that rank better have much more content for those specialties than his site does and my thought it that he needs to add more quality content to rank better for those searches. On his site he mentions his specialties, but also he has various personal things on his sites that reflect his interest. These are clearly separated from the business portion. My questions are should he 1) separate his personal information into a new domain and 2) should he have a separate URL for each of his specialties? OR would one URL work as long as everything is clearly separated? I read once that for legal services to rank well you should make a separate site for each specialty and have that site focus solely on that service.

• Jokes search engine / PHP based search engine on database

  I'm looking for a script, functioning like the Google homepage that fetches data from a database rather than the internet. This is not intended to be a search engine, but a repository of jokes that can be pulled depending on the keywords typed. No sophisticated search techniques are required - keyword based is perfectly fine. If some mechanism of up/down-voting jokes can be incorporated, that would be fantastic, but I'm presuming that will be an entirely different game.

• Webhosting with custom database choice [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I am trying to find somewhere to host a website which uses OrientDB as its database. My budget doesn't stretch to a dedicated server where I can configure everything as I need it. Rather, I am hoping to find somewhere, ideally UK based, that will allow me to install/install for me OrientDB on their server, that is of the normal shared server variety. Is anybody able to point me in a good direction for this please (whilst UK is preferable it is not essential)?

• Should I index my mobile duplicate of my desktop website on google?

  I have a duplicate of http://he.thenamestork.com with the url http://he.thenamestork.com/mobile - all files are duplicated while the mobile version has a slightly different content. Notice that when I write 'mobile' I only mean regular HTML4 with smartphone friendly CSS. I have a series of redirects (using .htaccess) that allows smartphone users land directly on the mobile versions. But I wonder, shound I index the mobile version as well so those users will be able to get direct, faster links? And what is the proper way of doing that without causing problem in google search? I guess I'm asking if there's a way to get google display regular urls for desktop users and ../mobile/.. urls for smartphone users, and if it is smart SEOwise.

• Business not showing up on right hand side of google search

  The business I work has currently has a verified business Google+ page and in the past this page has shown up as a thumbnail during Google searches. The thumbnail brings up basic information such as our picture and operating hours etc. However, since verifying the business page, the thumbnail overview of our business does not seem to show up anymore. I have tried Google searching our business on several computers and it still just brings up the normal search results. Is there a setting I need to activate in order for the thumbnail to appear? • Advice on software infrastructure for a FLOSS bounty site

  I am planning to set up a simple web site where people can offer bounties for work on FLOSS projects. Unfortunately I have no experience at web development (I am a C/C++ developer), so I was hoping someone might be able to suggest out-of-the-box packages (preferably Debian ones) I could use to build the site from. My idea of how the site would work is to keep things as simple as possible. The person proposing a bounty would enter a description with relevant links (particularly to a bugtracker entry with the project the work is to be done on, where the real discussion and work would take place) and information and place an initial contribution. Other people would be able to add (donate, not pledge) contributions, but any discussion would take place on the project's bugtracker. I am also planning to run a mailing list rather than a forum (at least initially), so that is not a requirement. Paypal seems to me to be the handiest payment mechanism. So overall what I need is probably a simple interface with Paypal integration and a simple database backend. I hope this is the right place for my question, if not I would be grateful for pointers to somewhere better. And of course, this is purely about the technical side, though I am more than happy to discuss other aspects of the project elsewhere.

• Pagination and duplicate content

  I have an archive page that displays the number of articles published. Because there were so many, I ran a pagination script: for 127.0.0.1/archive/2/?p=x&pp=y where p is the page number and pp is number of articles to display per page. The pagination looks like this: Prev 1 2 3 4 ... 12 NEXT with each item linking to p like <a href="?p=x">x</a>. I also have the items per page setter: 25 | 50 | 100 (<a href="?pp=y">y</a>). Now I have a PHP script that fixes pp into a session variable. But I am worried about duplicate content (since incrementing pp values will be inclusive) and also content not getting indexed because its not in the pagination link. so in the example above, pages 5-11 will not be indexed. Any ideas on how to fix this?

• Google Webmaster Tools shows invalid data

  Webmaster Tools shows 1 URL error (not found page). The report says that 5 pages are linking to a page (let's call it x) that does not exist (and because it doesn't exists it returns a soft 404). HOWEVER, I look in those 5 pages (in the source code) and none is linking to the x page. It is like Google sees an old page that was indeed pointing to x. What is the problem? How do I know if Google cached an old version for those 5 pages?

• pros-cons of separate hosting accounts versus using addon domain

  Folks: For historical reasons, I have "Site A" on "Hosting Account A", and "Site B" on "Account B", totally independent accounts with the same vendor, Bluehost. Both are primary domains. Now that Hosting Account B is just about to expire, I'm considering letting it disappear and moving Site B to an Addon domain on "Account A". Both sites are non-commercial, narrow-interest, very-low-traffic, hundreds of page views per month. The file weights for the sites are non-trivial, especially as I like to install specialized CMSs in subdomains. Since Bluehost allows unlimited hosting space there should be no issue with the file load, except I've seen hints of an issue with total file count, maybe 50k files -- which I'm not currently close to hitting, but might eventually. My question: what are the pros and cons of using separate accounts versus hosting Site B as an addon domain? Obviously, using a single account is cheaper by half, and I know that my authoring environment (DreamWeaver CS5) complains when it detects nested source trees, telling me "Synchronization" might fail in such cases, but I don't depend on this feature. What other factors should I consider? TIA

  This might be a question for ServerFault, and f it wasn't for the Plesk aspect I would ask it there to start with, so if it's better suited for over there let me know and I'll move it. I'm working on a dedicated server set up as a reseller account with Plesk to manage the domains and server configuration, and i need to add a directory to the local open_basedir configuration for a specific vhost. Given Plesk's normal methodology, I expected to be able to go to /var/www/vhost/{%DOMAINNAME%}/conf and modify vhost.conf and place a new value there, as I have successfully done with other configuration settings for this domain (turning safe_mode off, for instance). When I do so, however, the new setting doesn't take (per phpinfo();). If I edit httpd.conf (which the plesk configuration specifically says not to do in the notes at the top of httpd.conf) the setting takes. Is there something specific about the open_basdir setting that makes it not configurable in vhost.conf? How much trouble am I letting myself in for by editing the vhost-specific httpd.conf (I imagine is someone makes changes in the plesk web interface it might be overwritten, but what other risk is there)? By using JavaScript approach I can control the look and feel of that link + potentially I could change the link html in the future without touching partner websites. The only potential problem I see with this approach is SEO. I'm not sure if google will be able to index that link to my website, since it's generated by javascript.

• How should a site respond to automated login attempts with phony usernames?

  For the last couple weeks I've been seeing a consistent stream of 15-30 invalid login attempts per hours on my site. Many of them are non-sensical usernames that nobody would ever register for real, and often contain typical spam-related keywords. They all come from different IP addresses so I can't just IP block/throttle the requests. I'm not worried about unauthorized access to real accounts since they aren't using real usernames. And if it were a member of my site trying to brute force logins, they could easily scrape the valid usernames from the site, so I'm not worried about that kind of malicious behavior either. But what's the point of this type of activity? What would whichever bot operator is doing this have to gain by attempting all these logins?

• How do I change pages registering as 404 to 200

  I have this problem. After relaunching my site: http://www.kgstiles.com, traffic dropped immensely(about 60%). After troubleshooting for a week and a half - losing thousands of dollars off of lost traffic in the process, I found that Google was getting a 404 error at the end of many of my 301 redirects(so it wouldn't index the new pages). Most of of the pages, though, would register in my browser. They registered as a 404 error in Google's index as well as a 404checker. So my first question is: could this be what's causing my loss of traffic? and second: how do I fix it? I'm desperate!   I am using Joomla and want to implement a subscription based ecommerce solution. I started using VirtueMart and noticed its shortcomings regarding subscription based recurring items. Turns out Virtuemart can take its own plugins and I found something called SimSu which I don't want to pay for. I feel like I have taken a nuke to a knife fight, as I only need one or two subscription based products on this site. They will be recurring payments.   I am looking for a CMS where I can layout the page from scratch using HTML/PHP/CSS and simply enter code such as:- FOR EACH (listOfArticles) SORT mostRecent CATEGORY news LIMIT 5 <div class="articleTitle">{title}</div> <div class="arcielBody">{body}</div> END to get a list of the five most recent articles of a certain category in the relevant place. Does such a thing exist anymore? Unless my mind is playing tricks on me, the CMSs of five or ten years ago had this approach. I am thinking of MovableType and the now defunct CityDesk. It seems to me that CMSs these days have a 'templates first' approach. I.E. you must always choose a template before doing anything - which I find really painful. Learning how to design these structured templates also seems overly painful. So can anyone help me in my quest? Thank you, Mark

• Consolidating multiple domain names

  I have a client that has three separately hosted copies of their website, each on a separate domain name. The websites are all essentially the same, bar a few discrepancies caused by badly managed updates in the past. I will soon be launching a completely new website for them, at which point, all three domain names are to resolve to the same web server. One domain name will become the default domain name that they refer to in all their literature, and the other two will simply be used as catch-alls for old links, bookmarks, and so on. I would like to know what people consider the best route to achieve this. My plan so far is: Get the new site up and running on the new webserver. Change the relevant A record of the default domain name to point to the new webserver. a) Keep the existing hosting accounts in operation. Create a list of 301 redirects from old page names on the old site to new page names on the new site. or b) Configure CNAME records for the non-default domain names, each pointing to the new webserver. Create a list of 301 redirects on the new site that redirect from old page names to new page names. If my understanding is correct, 3a will help to maintain whatever search engine rankings the sites already have (I know it's not going to be perfect), while at the same time informing search engines that the old domain names are no longer in use. What's a good approach to take here?

What I would like to do is create different Profiles under the same account segmenting the sub domains by means of filters. Currently I am just excluding the hostname of the main website by using the following custom filter: Exclude: Hostname Filter pattern: ^www.mydomain.co.za(.*) I know this isn't the proper method of doing this though and have some of the main domains links coming through in the data.   I just took over the webmaster position in my organization, and I'm trying to set up a development environment separate from the production environment. The two environments are hosted with different companies, both on shared hosting plans. Right now, production is at domain.com and development is at domain2.com What I want is to direct my development team to dev.domain.com More importantly, I don't want the URL to change from dev.domain.com back to domain2.com, but I also be responsive to page changes. For example, if my dev team navigates from dev.domain.com to a page (called "page"), I'd like the URL to show as dev.domain.com/page Is this possible, or am I just dreaming?

  Im familiar with seo and getting higher google listings but for allot of services google has recently been making there search results (were applicable) much more location orientated.. for instance searching for a "accountant in london" or "accountancy firm london" will through return the first half of page 1 as google places listings, then under about 6 of these you will get your normal search results so somone who used to rank #1 on page 1 now will rank effectily #7. What i was wandering is that i cant see any reasons as to why the company that rank high in the places results get there, often they are not high up in the search results. Is there a way to optimise on or offsite to rise up the google places listings in your city ?

  Does anyone know any Help Desk Software which allow you to create user groups / to mark/categorize specific users in some way / and to to ban specific users/e-mails (not user groups) for a specific period of time? Kayako? OTRS? simpledesk?... Kayako looks to be very functional but not sure if it has this option. zendesk is also very functional but a SaaS service not a downloadable software. Since the functions that I am saying are very common in forum software, maybe simpledesk could do it since it is based in SMF. Any ideas?

• The danger of changing the domain of your portfolio

  So I have a online portfolio that is available at mervin-ux-portfolio.com but I am planning to change hosts since the current host I am hosting it with is hitting me with a very high yearly renewal rate. When I was inquiring about domain transfers ,,they told me that since I had not initiated the domain transfer within 14 days of the expiry of the domain ,they cannot do it immediately and it would take about two weeks to to release the domain name. Since I dont like the idea of my site being down for like 2 weeks ,I was wondering if I should start afresh with a new domain on a new host and what were the potential dangers of that ( I have the entire site backup,so creating a replica of the site on the new host wont be hard) I also wont be losing any business or work since I work full time currently but I was just wondering about the challenges in terms of getting my domain name back to the top of search results and basically getting it out there assuming I go the new domain name approach. I know this is strictly not an UX question but I was hoping people could give some suggestions on what I should do
