• How can I use domain masking without having self referral in Google Analytics

  I have one old domain that points to a website's server's ip (let's call it www.oldsite.com). I have a new one, www.newsite.com, that is set up to be forwarded to a specific page on the website. Due to the way the host of newsite.com places the website in a frame, in Google Analystics, the newsite.com is listed as a source rather than the source they were at before hand, causing a self referral. A solution is to edit the code of the iframe as I looked up, but there's no way to really edit the host's masking source code of course. Another solution I did previously was have www.newsite.com point to the address that www.oldsite.come pointed to. It solved the analytics problems, but in exchange, the url masking no longer worked. In the address bar, it came up as www.oldsite.com. Is there a way to make me have url masking and be able to forward to agree with google analytics? The server of the website is hosted on a cloud server, if this is anymore information.

• SEO effect on retiring a subdomain

  I have a website mysite.com, which had a subdomain which was very popular in Google: abc.mysite.com. Due to a site redesign we had to consolidate the domains and the content of abc.mysite.com/* now started appearing in mysite.com/abc/*. After this change I am seeing sharp decline in SEO traffic. I have proper 301 redirects in place, but still the SEO is degrading by day. Any insights on why this may be happening?

• Repeating keywords in inbound links

  Hy. I have a service similar to bit.ly. The link generation method is similar but the site is not. A user uses my site just like the mentioned bit.ly, but i offer a differnet kind of service for which i would want to rank (on Google) for. If i were to generate links such as: mysite.com/my-keywords/1Asdf34 would it be considered spammy or black hat? The same for bit.ly would be: bit.ly/url-shortening-services/3k1dS4sd For bit.ly it would defeat the purpose, but url length in my case does not have to be short.

• Incorrect Dates for Downloable files in Google Snippets

  We have a website which create publications and newsletters. In most (if not all) the search results for our downloadable files, the Google snippets show dates which are less than when those files were actually published, from one to three months before. It would be impossible since those files did not even exist before the dates mentioned. The dates themselves do not seem to have any significance in our site. Any suggestions where the dates come from?

• Do PHP-FPM (and other PHP handlers) need execute permissions on the PHP files they're serving?

  I read in a post at Server Fault that PHP-FPM needs execute permissions. However, the answer in When creating a website, what permissions and directory structure? only grants read and write permissions to PHP-FPM. Maybe I don't quite understand how PHP handlers (or CGI in general) work, but the two claims seem contradictory to me. As I understand, when Apache / Nginx gets a request for foobar.php, it "passes" the file to an appropriate handler. That is, I imagine it's as if www-root (or apache or whomever the webserver's running as) were to run some command, /usr/sbin/php-fpm foobar.php Actually, no, that's naive, I just realized. PHP-FPM must be a running instance (if it's to be performant, and cache, etc.), so probably PHP-FPM is just being told, "Hey, quick, process this file for me!" In either case, I don't see why execute permissions are necessary. It's not like the webserver needs to literally execute the file, i.e. ./foobar.php Is the Server Fault answer simply mistaken?

• google analytics - real-time user stats vs audience overview user stats

  When looking at the real-time analytics reporting for our app, it shows around 150-180 users, say around 10AM (our peak usage time). When I look at the Audience Overview report for the same day (hourly breakdown), the number of users shown for the 10AM hour is over 1000. I'm sure this has to do with some sort of aggregation, but I would like to know more about how these two numbers are calculated in order to understand it.

Of course, we need to occasionally update these "static" files, so we currently add an infix version as part of the filename (based on the SHA1 sum of the file contents). Thus: styles.min.css Becomes: styles.min.abcd1234.css However, managing the versioned files can become tedious, and I was wondering if a GET argument notation might be cleaner and better: styles.min.css?v=abcd1234 Which do you use, and why? Are there browser- or proxy/cache-related considerations that I should consider?

• How do I change pages registering as 404 to 200

  I have this problem. After relaunching my site: http://www.kgstiles.com, traffic dropped immensely(about 60%). After troubleshooting for a week and a half - losing thousands of dollars off of lost traffic in the process, I found that Google was getting a 404 error at the end of many of my 301 redirects(so it wouldn't index the new pages). Most of of the pages, though, would register in my browser. They registered as a 404 error in Google's index as well as a 404checker. So my first question is: could this be what's causing my loss of traffic? and second: how do I fix it? I'm desperate!   No clue on a title for this, someone feel free to suggest an edit. I have a client that has a website. He owns around 200 domains, and wants each domain to contain content from the main website. The header, footer, and navigation bars will remain the same for each domain, but the actual page content will vary (obviously duplicate content issues, open to suggestions) He wants each individual page to be its own separate domain, rather than a url within the main domain. (page1.com page2.com etc - NOT site.com/page1.html, however the file is actually hosted at site.com/page1.html - all links will direct to site.com/whatever accordingly) What would be the best place to start reading / learning on how to do this, and what concerns/considerations should be taken into mind?

So I am looking for some reliable image host which provides free hotlinking service. The Google Picasa would be best, but I think they do not allow hotlinking. PS. For example: Http://example.com/about-cats.html <title>About Cats</title> Furthermore, if that title were to be changed by the page's author, should the URL change to match and the old URL be redirected (301) to the new URL? Edit Also, if the pages author were to decide to revert his changes after several days, would it be right to remove the redirect and set up an new redirect from the amended URL back to the old URL?

• How to include high resolution version of thumbnail

  I'm running a tube site that has a thumbnail for each post/video (running via Wordpress, 500k posts). When I first created the thumbnails they were a fairly large size, around 640px in width each and because of that I was seeing a lot of traffic from Google Images. After streamlining the site and resizing all of the thumbnails down to 170px rather than scaling them down I'm worried that Google isn't going to rank the images as high as they would be at a larger resolution, so is there a way to include the higher res versions and serve them to be indexed instead of the smaller ones?

• Help Desk Software with user groups and temporary ban function?

  Does anyone know any Help Desk Software which allow you to create user groups / to mark/categorize specific users in some way / and to to ban specific users/e-mails (not user groups) for a specific period of time? Kayako? OTRS? simpledesk?... Kayako looks to be very functional but not sure if it has this option. zendesk is also very functional but a SaaS service not a downloadable software. Since the functions that I am saying are very common in forum software, maybe simpledesk could do it since it is based in SMF. Any ideas?

  For some reason, I can't get my multi-channel funnel which utilizes RegEx's in the path steps to function -- it keeps coming back with no data. There are a few variables which may be holding things up, but I can't figure out the origin of the problem, nor a solution.   Possible Duplicate: What are the best ways to increase your site's position in Google? One of the most basic SEO techiniques is including accurate description below 64 characters in the tags of each page. I was wondering if is considered ethical SEO to set up the contents based on a search keyword for example. So if the user searches for 'apples pictures' for example, then the title of the webpage would be 'apple pictures'. Note that the search keywords accurately describe my website contents because the title will always relate to the body of the webpage and 85-90% of the terms searched for will return corresponding results. Is this considered a good seo practice and is it ethical? Also, can someone explain what the idea is behind "linking"? I read somewhere that it is a good seo practice to link other websites and it is good when other websites link you. Does this mean that I should include as many links to other websites as possible (that are somehow relevant to my websites goal), also if I joined forums/services and posted my website url in the signature, would that still be considered other websites linking me?

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I am planning to launch a website down soon. I wanted to know what solutions are available for hosting and registration. Starting with domain registration. Any site you have used/preferred ? I am considering either godaddy or 123reg. Does it even make any difference which you choose? Is there any fine print i need to worry about. I am based in UK , not sure if that helps in resolving any issues if encountered. Does my hosting need to be done at the site i purchased my registration? If not , will there be any transfer fees if i change my hosting? Can I just register the name now and worry about hosting later? At the moment, I plan to have it up and running using either some sort of a tool or a template and perhaps put the bells and whistles down the line. I understand 123 has its own builder tool available, There are a few solutions suggested like wordpress,drupal & jhoomla... I am a C++ developer , not a web programmer, but I do feel the need to open the hood up and make changes if i see fit. So I guess I am looking for a solution where I can easily drag-drop widgets I need and when the time comes customize it. Which CMS would you recommend. Extras: What extras do you need to get , I was suggested to get hold of whois privacy to keep the spambots away, anything else you guys would recommend I keep my eyes open before I sign the dotted line.

I now want to make V2 the default website. I could point the website to that V2 directory however I have other folders under the current root website that I need to keep.   I want to create a subdomain for a site hosted by Jimdo (a DIY website builder). Jimdo does not allow subdomains however. I am trying to find a workaround where a subdomain is hosted elsewhere but everything else remains as it is. E.g. I use their email service and I want to keep it. The domain is not hosted by Jimdo, but by a host that allows me to edit my zones. It points to the Jimdo NS. I have independent hosting where I have NS information. This is where I want to host my subdomain. My thinking was that I could use ZoneEdit as a "fork" that allows me to keep using my Jimdo page like before and, at the same time, directs a subdomain to another host.   I had an e-commerce website hosted on http://mydomain.com/beta for more than a year, eventually I decided to move the website to root http://mydomain.com I had done quite a lot of link postings to forums etc, when my site used to be hosted in the sub-dir /beta . Is there any way to do a mod_rewrite by which all the old links that I have posted do not return as broken links since now longer the site is hosted in /beta and is now hosted on the site root. I did read that mod_rewrite can help resolve this issue, but also read about that this has to be done with care. Just a tip that this site is using Friendl URL.

• Unable to download microsoft excel files from a IIS SSL site

  The web master at my corporation added SSL to the web site and now none of my users can download Microsoft word and xcel files the sites generates. According to Microsoft the following must be down. Web sites that want to allow this type of operation should remove the no-cache header or headers. Typical of MS they don't tell you what to do, how to do it, or what the best practice is. The web master says its a web config setting. But all i can finds is <configuration> <appSettings/> <connectionStrings/> <system.web> <httpRuntime sendCacheControlHeader="false"/> and I don't know if this is the best way to achieve the result. I would greatly appreciate some advice on this subject.

• Making Multilingual J! 1.5 + + Joomfish + VM 1.17 more workable

  I have been working with a multilingual Joomla! 1.5.23 e-commerce website for a client for quite a while and made several customizations. But the client is still not happy he has to adjust content at at least three locations: Joomfish Virtuemart Article Manager Joomfish is nice in the way that it allows you to create multilingual content and copy and paste the source language on the same page, which makes translation work easier but it is annoying in the way you have to edit several custom fields at different locations/ content types. As Joomla! source language content still needs to be created in the article manager first this is the second location the client has to work at. The third location is Virtuemart. Here all the products and product categories are created. And here we added some custom fields as well. Now I was considering upgrading the website to Joomla 1.7 or later on to 1.8. This J! versions have better multilingual support. But I wonder if er can really make the client's life easier. We will still have to copy the source language to a new article and create content in another language. We will still have the issue of content in custom fields that needs to be translated and we will still have to create content. Should I go for another CMS such as Magento or do you think there is a way in a more recent Joomla! version to work with all content in one or max two locations?

  Is there a service or site out there that will store cardholder data for me? I don't need any kind of transaction processing or recurring billing... I just need somewhere that I can store data on until someone in my company is able to look at it. The specific need is allowing customers to input data that will be used for credit checks. Name, Address, Credit Card(s), and the such. Google Checkout, PayPal, NetSuite, and Authorize.net seem to be what everyone suggests to me, but they don't offer what I need -- they're just payment gateways.
