• Auto-starting a GUI application that requires sudo

  Question: I need to auto-start a GUI application that requires sudo. I know I need to edit the sudoers file with: sudo visudo However, I don't know what to write in the file. What I already tried: sudo visudo and then added the following: nanostuff ALL = NOPASSWD: /usr/lib/AirVPN/AirVPN.exe I also tried with: nanostuff ALL = NOPASSWD /usr/bin/X11/airvpn and nanostuff ALL = NOPASSWD /usr/bin/airvpn None of those worked.   I am attempting to modify an application with the following characteristics: Written in C#.net Using Visual Studio 2010 The application uses a Master sheet to maintain commonality The Master sheet has the following: <%@ Master Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="mysheet.master.cs" Inherits="master_mysheet" %> Now, currently, the master sheet has an include file that brings in a common footer: #include file="inc/my-footer.inc" Here's what I want to do: I would like to modify the master sheet to be able to read in a footer based on the value contained in a session variable... i.e. (not real code, but just something to give an idea of what I want) if session("x") = "a" then #include file="inc/my-footer1.inc" else #include file="inc/my-footer2.inc" My first instinct was to go with some vbscript: <script type="text/vbscript" language="vbscript"> document.write("vbscript example.") </script> However, it doesn't run the vbscript code automatically on page load. Does anyone know: - The syntax I need to actually get this to work? i.e. to get the vbscript to run automatically on page load, AND to do the page include? - Or, is there a better way to go about this? (perhaps by doing some coding in C#) Note: I am experienced in C#; however, I haven't done any vbscript since the days of ASP classic, so my knowledge there is out of date.

• Pinning a Java application to the Windows 7 taskbar

  Original question I use Launch4j as a wrapper for my Java application under Windows 7, which, to my understanding, in essence forks an instance of javaw.exe that in turn interprets the Java code. As a result, when attempting to pin my application to the task bar, Windows instead pins javaw.exe. Without the required command line, my application will then not run. As you can see, Windows also does not realize that Java is the host application: the application itself is described as "Java(TM) Platform SE binary". I have tried altering the registry key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\javaw.exe to add the value IsHostApp. This alters the behavior by disabling pinning of my application altogether; clearly not what I want. After reading about how Windows interprets instances of a single application (and a phenomenon discussed in this question), I became interested in embedding a Application User Model ID (AppUserModelID) into my Java application. I believe that I can resolve this by passing a unique AppUserModelID to Windows. There is a shell32 method for this, SetAppID(). (Or SetCurrentProcessExplicitAppUserModelID?) Is it possible to call it via JNI? If so, would this even resolve the issue? On a side note, I was curious if any of the APIs discussed in this article could be implemented for a Java application. • System architecture: simple approach for setting up background tasks behind a web application -- wil

  I have a Django web application and I have some tasks that should operate (or actually: be initiated) on the background. The application is deployed as follows: apache2-mpm-worker; mod_wsgi in daemon mode (1 process, 15 threads). The background tasks have the following characteristics: they need to operate in a regular interval (every 5 minutes or so); they require the application context (i.e. the application packages need to be available in memory); they do not need any input other than database access, in order to perform some not-so-heavy tasks such as sending out e-mail and updating the state of the database. Now I was thinking that the most simple approach to this problem would be simply to piggyback on the existing application process (as spawned by mod_wsgi). By implementing the task as part of the application and providing an HTTP interface for it, I would prevent the overhead of another process that is holding all of the application into memory. A simple cronjob can be setup that sends a request to this HTTP interface every 5 minutes and that would be it. Since the application process provides 15 threads and the tasks are quite lightweight and only running every 5 minutes, I figure they would not be hindering the performance of the web application's user-facing operations. Yet... I have done some online research and I have seen nobody advocating this approach. Many articles suggest a significantly more complex approach based on a full-blown messaging component (such as Celery, which uses RabbitMQ). Although that's sexy, it sounds like overkill to me. Some articles suggest setting up a cronjob that executes a script which performs the tasks. But that doesn't feel very attractive either, as it results in creating a new process that loads the entire application into memory, performs some tiny task, and destroys the process again. And this is repeated every 5 minutes. Does not sound like an elegant solution. So, I'm looking for some feedback on my suggested approach as described in the paragraph before the preceeding paragraph. Is my reasoning correct? Am I overlooking (potential) problems? What about my assumption that application's performance will not be impeded?

  I have a WPF business line application with a tabbed userinterface, menus and toolbars. The application must be navigable through a keyboard, some users like to minimize mouse use. I have thrown together the included XAML sample to illustrate the problem of keyboard navigation. Using the tab key I can only get to the menu, and then to the toolbar. I have tried various attached properties for KeyboardNavigation and FocusManager, but I have not succeeded in the following goals: Navigate to the contents of the first tabpage using the keyboard. Disable tab key navigation from tabpage to menu and toolbar.   Okay, In order to test RAC One Node, on my Oracle VM Laptop, I just: - installed Oracle VM 2.2 - Created two OEL 5.3 images The two images are fully prepared for Oracle 11gr2 Grid Infrastructure and 11gr2 RAC including four shared disks for ASM and private nics. After installation of the Oracle 11gr2 Grid Infrastructure and a "software only installation" of 11gr2 RAC, I installed patch 9004119 as you can see with the opatch lsinv output: This patch has the scripts required to administer RAC One Node, you will see them later. At the moment we have them available for Linux and Solaris. After installation of the patch, I created a RAC database with an instance on one node. Please note that the "Global Database Name" has to be the same as the SID prefix and should be less then or equal to 8 characters: When the database creation is done, first I create a service. This is because RAC One Node needs to be "initialized" each time you add a service: The service configuration details are: After creating the service, a script called raconeinit needs to run from $RDBMS_HOME/bin. This is a script supplied by the patch. I can imagine the next major patch set of 11gr2 has this scripts available by default. The script will configure the database to run on other nodes: After initialization, when you would run raconeinit again, you would see: So, now the configuration is ready and we are ready to run 'Omotion' and move the service around from one node to the other (yes, vm competitor: this is service is available during the migration, nice right ?) . • Facebook PHP SDK and Wordpress Error

  I have a developer environment setup with WAMP, Wordpress, and PHPEdit IDE. I use the Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube API's in a sidebar. I'm using Facebook's PHP SDK to display information(no login or admin functions). Since the FB SDK and WP use session_start() I get the following warning: Warning: session_start() [function.session-start]: Cannot send session cache limiter - headers already sent (output started at C:\wamp\www\dfi\wp-content\themes\DFI\header.php:12) in C:\wamp\www\dfi\wp-content\themes\DFI\api\facebook.php on line 36 I'm trying to figure this out by using the warning output but it doesn't help considering the following. I know about clearing white space and characters before and after <?php ?> and placing session_start() before any http output. I use unix line enders and UTF8 encoding without BOM. • Can't build gcc anymore since upgrade to 11.10

  On Monday I've upgraded to from Ubuntu 11.04 (my initial installation) to 11.10 and now I can't build gcc from source anymore. Since I forgot to uninstall the gcc package before the upgrade, Ubuntu replaced my 4.7.0 compiler with it's stable 4.6.1. So I tried to build the SVN sources again, but it fails. I've most recently tried it with SVN revision 180193. I've cofigured it with: ~/devel/gcc/build$ ../src/configure --prefix=/usr --enable-languages=c++ And make it with: ~/devel/gcc/build$ make -j4 Just to be sure, I did a rm -rf * in the build directory in case there's some broken stuff inside. Didn't help, though. That's the backstory. I tried to fix it and searched for the bits/predefs.h. It's inside /usr/include/i386-linux-gnu. I temporarily fixed the problem by doing ~/devel/gcc/build$ C_INCLUDE_PATH=/usr/include/i386-linux-gnu make -j4 Which is only temporary because now gcc complains that it can't find crti.o. Which i can find in /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu. Now i could also set C_LIBRARY_PATH - actually it doesn't work - but I feel like I'm fighting the system here. Also, even if it succeeds, my newly built compiler would also not know about the i386-linux-gnu stuff. So I would have to set C_LIBRARY_PATH and C_INCLUDE_PATH before every build of every project I have. I could add it to my .bashrc but that subverts the system even more. So, how do I tell the build process: That there are additional include/lib directories, and That it should build a gcc which respects them too? Edit: I forgot to include the command which causes the above error message. Also I can think of another solution: Copy the stuff from /usr/include/i386-linux-gnu to /usr/include (same thing for /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu to /usr/lib). But that doesn't feel right, either. Finally, the system's gcc 4.6.1 can compile other applications just fine, except mine, which use C++11 features not present in the 4.6 series.

  Long story short: we use Flash as a partial GUI in our .NET desktop applications. Normally, this means that the Flash player control sits in some WinForm, playing a movie file. Changes in the real world are presented in the movie (e.g., a light-bulb turned on in the real world? a matching one will light up inside the Flash movie), and interaction with the instances in the movie will affect the real world (clicked the light-bulb? the light bulb in the real world will turn on). My question is: which technologies / products can offer me similar capabilities? Of course, I'm looking for something that can compete with Flash / Silverlight: animations, object-oriented scripting and design, powerful tools allowing the artists to design symbols conveniently, etc... static image objects won't cut it

• how to package a unity lens app

  i'm new to ubuntu apps and launchpad. I've created a unity lenses app using quickly but i'm stuck on how to deploy it, i have two questions. I can create a deb file using quickly package but when i install it, i still need to manually restart unity and run the project using 'quickly run'. how can i get the package manager to do that on install so users can start using the lens straight away? I'm confused as to what i need to do to make my project be installed using a ppa. i've pushed my code to launchpad using bzr, i've created a ppa, openpgp key, ssh etc. i don't know what to do next? Any help would be appreciated. My project in launchpad is unity-lens-php Thanks

• How to remove a Facebook App from Facebook's search results?

  I have a Facebook app so users can login to my website using their Facebook account, but when you type my website name into Facebook's search (the search box right next to the Facebook logo) the app shows up in the search results. When I click it, it says "Misconfigured App - Sorry, the details for AppName cannot be displayed because the app is misconfigured." I want to remove my app from Facebook's search results, because it's not meant for users, but I can't figure out how to do it. Any ideas?

• How to create a PPA for C++ program?

  My questions are: c++/gtkmm project created with NetBeans. How to make package to PPA from this? I have created target files structure (*.desktop, iconfile, ui glade files). Binary goes to /opt/extras.ubuntu.com/myagenda/bin/myagenda. There is also a folder of glade files, that must go to /opt/extras.ubuntu.com/myagenda/bin/myagenda/ui. Desktop file goes to /usr/share/applications/myagenda.desktop. Icon goes to /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps/myagenda.svg As you see, there is really small amount of files. • Should database-models (conceptual or physical) be reviewed by DBAs?

  Where I work, new applications that are being developed that will use their own relational database, must have their database-models (conceptual, then physical ) reviewed and aproved by DBAs. Things looked after are normalization, antipatterns, table and column naming standards, etc. Is this really a DBA's responsability to do this ? or should it be, in a greater extend, the responsability of app designers and architects ?
