  Hi All, I have a silverlight application, that I want to calculate page load time through C# using Fiddler API. Could you please share some useful guidelines how I can do it using fiddler/fiddlercore. Here are some details what I want to do... Launch fiddler and launch IE (without using httpweb request) Load my application url. Calculate page load time Earlier I tried to use httpwatch API to calculate it. Utility or Utilities? Or do you use a mixture of them?   Hello all, I was wondering what is the better method for Casting objects for C#: MyClassName test = (MyClassName)object; MyClassName test = object as MyClassName; I know already that if you do the first way, you get an exception, and the second way it sets test as null. However, I was wondering why do one over the other? I see the first way a lot, but I like how the second way because then I can check for null... If there isn't a 'better way' of doing it, what are the guidelines for using one way or the other?

• Is Zend Certification "needed" before starting with the Zend Framework?

  Hi, We're starting a new project using the Zend Framework, because the ideas and expandability speaks to us. But now I'm wondering, should we first get some form of Zend Certification before starting with the Zend Framework? Will we miss fundamental yet basic groundrules if we just start "hacking away" using the Zend Framework? I don't want to see us have to redo (part of) the project, because we missed some vital guidelines from the beginning, forcing us to rewrite our code. If possible, I'd love to hear stories of others having used the Zend Framework, without certification, to see what limitations they ran accross.

  Hi All, I've started a new project where I'm writing a WPF business application, but I'm having trouble with the design. The database was easy to put together, but I'm not sure how I have to go about the designing the application itself. The main thing that I find hard is the code design. I've decided that the MVVM pattern is very applicable for this application, but how do I go about deciding what classes to build and how things go from there? Does anyone have some guidelines I could use? This is a standard business application that just stores and retrieves data. Some data queries will also need to be performed.

  Hi, Just trying to still get my head around IOC principles. Q1: Static Methods - Should util classes with static helper methods be wired up with IOC? For example if I have a HttpUtils class with a number of static methods, should I be trying to pass it to other business logic classes via IOC? Follow on questions for this might be: Q2: Singletons - What about things like logging where you may typically get access to it via a Logger.getInstance() type call. Would you normally leave this as is, and NOT use IOC for injecting the logger into business classes that need it? Q3: Static Classes - I haven't really used this concept, but are there any guidelines for how you'd typically handle this if you were moving to an IOC based approach. Thanks in advance.

  Guidelines for code-golf on SO We've all seen phone numbers that are put into words: 1-800-BUY-MORE, etc. What is the shortest amount of code you can write that will produce all the possible combinations of words for a 7 digit US phone number. Input will be a seven digit integer (or string, if that is simpler), and assume that the input is properly formed. Output will be a list of seven character strings that For instance, the number 428-5246 would produce GATJAGM GATJAGN GATJAGO GATJAHM GATJAHN GATJAHO and so on..... Winning criteria will be code from any language with the fewest characters that produce every possible letter combination. Additional Notes: To make it more interesting, words can be formed only by using the letters on a North American Classic Key Pad phone with three letters per number as defined here.That means that Z and Q are excluded. For the number '1', put a space. For the number '0', put a hyphen '-' Bonus points awarded for recognizing output as real English words. Okay, not really. ;-)

• Training speech recognition software

  A little left field, but I'm trying to train a speech recognition program and the guidelines suggest that I attempt to speak clearly but naturally. I notice, however, that when one speaks naturally each word tends to drift into the next, resulting in a rather ambiguous boundary between the words. One the one hand, speaking in a more stilted manner would seem to aid the computer in recognising the phonemes, but on the other it would tend to make it less likely to understand more natural speech. Anyone knowledgeable in the field out there who can suggest which of the two approaches is more effective? Thanks

  I remember seeing a question on my official MS 70-536 exam that talked about a simple class that was designed to be exposed for COM calling clients and etc. of all the members defined in the classes I chose the answer D. The one that used a generic. My question to you guys is this: If you were designing a .net custom type that was to be eventually consumed by a com caller or a com type .... of all the guidelines I have read on this subject. Generics is the one .Net topic I would not include in a class for this purpose I would omit such a data member or use something else? Am I right in thinking this. As soon as I saw this question I knew it was generics but I can't seem to prove it. Surely I did not make this up ... generics is a .net feature right?

• What simple methods are there to wrap a c++ based object model with a COM interface

  I have a pre-existing c++ object model which represents the business layer tier of an application. I want to be able to expose the object model to applications written in other languages i.e vbscript, VB, javascript etc. I believe the best way of doing this is to wrap the business objects with a COM layer. What fast and effective methods are there for doing this. Any advice, links to practical "How to" documentation would be very much appreciated. Because I'm starting a bounty on this , here's a few extra guidelines for potential bounty hunters :- 1)I've decided on an ATL approach 2)I'm now specifically looking for links to really good "how to and quickly" documentation on wrapping a pre-existing c++ object model to make it useable by a scripting language like javascript 3) Something with small working examples showing me what code needs to be added to what files, e.g what goes into the cpp , idl and hpp/h etc. It' must include an example I can compile test and change to get a better understanding.

• Slowness of Netbeans Platform Apps - how to mitigate?

  Hi, We are developing a commerical application (pretty complex) in java using Netbeans IDE. We have 2 options in netbeans to create it- 1. Develop Java desktop app 2. Netbeans Platform app We have requirement that application startup and response times should be very very fast, should be modular etc. We did Proof of Technology by creating apps using both approaches mentioned above. We found Netbeans platform apps are very slow during startup and during screen navigation compared to pure Swing based desktop apps. We tried to implement suggestions provided at http://wiki.netbeans.org/Category:Performance:FAQ and in other blogs and forums to improve on speed of the app but were not successful. We feel for creating a complex desktop app Netbeans platform app would be better suited, but its not meeting our performance requirements (startup and response times, memory footprints, CPU usage guidelines etc). Can any one guide us on how to mitigate our problem of improving performance of Netbeans Platforms apps? Thanks in advance for your help. -bhan

• How to Format Code in Research Reports

  I am currently writing a formal research report, and I'll be including code with this report. Question: Is there an accepted way of displaying code in research reports? I'm thinking both in terms of font, spacing, et cetera, and whether the code should be displayed inside the document, or in an appendix. The code will be JavaScript and PHP. None of the sections of code will be more than 25 lines (so they're mere snippets). There will be approx. half a dozen snippets. Each of the snippets will have a couple of paragraphs explaining what is happening in the code, and a discussion on its pros/cons. I have no contact with the body the report will be submitted to, and they have no published guidelines on how to format code (please do not question these points). Any help considered and appreciated.

• What guides or standards do you use for version control in your team ?

  I'm starting to do a small amount of development within my company. I'm intending to use Git for version control, and I'm interested to see what guidelines or standards people are using around version in their groups, similar to coding standards are often written within the group for the group. I'm assuming there will be things like; Commit often (at least every day/week/meeting etc) Release builds are always made from the master branch Prior to release, a new branch will be created for Testing and tagged as such. only bug fixes from this point onwards. The final release of this will be tagged as such and the bug fixes merged back into the trunk Each developer will have a public repo New features should get their own branch Obviously a lot of this will depend on what cvs you're using and how you've structured it. • Security & Authentication: SSL vs SASL

  My understanding is that SSL combines an encryption algorithm (like AES, DES, etc.) with akey exchange method (like Diffier-Hellman) to provide secure encryption and identification services between two endpoints on an un-secure network (like the Internet). My understanding is that SASL is an MD5/Kerberos protocol that pretty much does the same thing. So my question: what are the pros/cons to choosing both and what scenarios make both more preferable? Basically, I'm looking for a guidelines to follow when choosing SSL or to go with SASL instead. Thanks in advance!

  From the documentation of UITableView / UITableViewController: If you decide to use a UIViewController subclass rather than a subclass of UITableViewController to manage a table view, you should perform a couple of the tasks mentioned above to conform to the human-interface guidelines. To clear any selection in the table view before it’s displayed, implement the viewWillAppear: method to clear the selected row (if any) by calling deselectRowAtIndexPath:animated:. After the table view has been displayed, you should flash the scroll view’s scroll indicators by sending a flashScrollIndicators message to the table view; you can do this in an override of the viewDidAppear: method of UIViewController. So lets say I do my custom stuff here and I do not flash the scroll indicator, and I do not reset the selection (which I think is wrong anyways, the user wants to know from where he came from). Will they reject it?

• Any foundation to administrate an Android open source application?

  Our open source application is quite popular, and we are many developers. The app uses my Android Market account, and I shared the keys with a developer. But if both of us disappear, the application's Market account will be lost, and all users trapped. Giving the keys to all developers is not a solution either, for security reasons. Is there a foundation (like in Mozilla Foundation or Apache Foundation) that could accept to hold our Android Market account and release new versions in accordance with their own guidelines and our community consensus? There are quite a lot of Open Source foundations, but I could not find any that tackles this particular aspect of Android applications.

  I had a crazy thought about writing my own SQL Server driver to make it work something like non-blocking http client, so it won't be thread thirsty and could handle lots of db queries within one thread. I tried to look over google for some guidelines about implementing SQL Server client protocol, but found none really, where do those guys get information about it when they write own implementations for PHP or python?   Hey, stack! I'm on charge of building an ASP.NET MVC Document Management System. It have to be able to do basic document management tasks like adding, editing and searching entries and also perform versioning. Anyways, I'm targeting PDF, Office and many image formats as the file attached to each document entry in the database. My question is: What design guidelines do pros follow when building the storage mechanism? Do they store the document files in the file system? Database? How file uploading is handled? I used to upload the files to a temporal location while the user was editing the data and move it to permanent storage when the user confirmed the entry creation. Is this good? Any suggestions on improvement?

  Hi Guys, I would like to develop an application that will receive pictures from a camera and maybe afterwards save it in a database. This is what i want to do: When the picture is taken it is send to the program immediately (or the program must read the current picture taken) then display it. I will take pictures of many people or things so anytime a picture is taken i want to see the current picture displayed in the program. • Is there any ready-made calendar control for iPhone apps?

  I am building an applicaiton for the iPhone that will display upcoming and past events. I settled for a list view, but then I realized that a calendar (just like the one displayed in the "month" view in the built-in Calendar application) would be a best match (that is, this one). However, the iPhone Human Interface Guidelines just mentions the Date Picker, not the calendar, so I believe there is nothing like that out of the box. Is that true? If so, does anyone know of a third-party control that could be used? (I could write one myself, but I'd rather pick up something ready, since this is a departure on the original project plans).   As stated in the framework design guidelines and the WWW in general, the current guideline is to name your constants like this LastTemplateIndex as opposed to LAST_TEMPLATE_INDEX With the PascalCasing approach, how do you differentiate between a Property and a Constant. ErrorCodes.ServerDown is fine. But what about private constants within your class ? I use quite a lot of them for naming magic numbers.. or for expected values in my unit tests and so on. The ALL_CAPS style helps me know that it is a constant . _testApp.SelectTemplate(LAST_TEMPLATE_INDEX); *Disclosure: I have been using the SCREAMING_CAPS style for a while for constants + I find it more readable than squishedTogetherPascalCasedName. • What's the requests/second standard for scraping websites?

  This was the closest question to my question and it wasn't really answered very well imo: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2022030/web-scraping-etiquette I'm looking for the answer to #1: How many requests/second should you be doing to scrape? Right now I pull from a queue of links. Every site that gets scraped has it's own thread and sleeps for 1 second in between requests. I ask for gzip compression to save bandwidth. Are there standards for this? Surely all the big search engines have some set of guidelines they follow in regards to this.
