• Setting Up OpenCV and .lib files

  I have been trying to set up OpenCV for the past few days with no results. I am using Windows 7 and VS C++ 2008 express edition. I have downloaded and installed OpenCV 2.1 and some of the examples work. I downloaded CMake and ran it to generate the VS project files and built all of them but there with several errors, and couldn't get any farther than that. When I ran CMake I configured it to use the VS 9 compiler, and then it brought up a list of items in red such as BUILD_EXAMPLES, BUILD_LATEX_DOCS, ect. All of them were unchecked except BUILD_NEW_PYTHON_SUPPORT, BUILD_TESTS, ENABLE_OPENMP, and OPENCV_BUILD_3RDPARTY_LIBS. I configured and generate without changing anything and then it generated the VS files such as ALL_BUILD.vcproj. I built the OpenCV VS solution in debug mode and it had 15 failures (maybe this is part of the problem or is it because I don't have python and stuff like that?) Now there was a lib folder created after building but inside there was just this VC++ Minimum Rebuild Dependency file and Program Debug Database file, both called cvhaartraining. I believe it should have created the .lib files I need instead of this. Also, the bin folder now has a folder called Debug with the same types of files with names like cv200d and cvaux200d. Believe I need those .lib files to move forward. I would also greatly appreciate if someone could direct me to a reliable tutorial to set up VS for OpenCV because I have been reading a lot of tutorials and they all say different things such as some say to configure Window's environment variables and other say files are located in folders such as OpenCV/cv which I don't have. I have gotten past the point of clear headed thinking so if anyone could offer some direction or a simple list of the files I need to link then I would be thankful. Also a side question: why when linking the OpenCV libs do you have to put them in quotes?

So far, I am a Happy Netbeans User Currently, I had a project (GWT, J2EE and Swing), which I need to use Eclipse (Please do not ask Why) Here is the step I had been taken. Download Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers (190 MB) from http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/ I thought this should be the correct choice, as I see most features are found in that edition http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/packages/compare-packages After struggling a while to get use to the user interface of Eclipse, I still cannot find a Visual GUI Editor! Which plugin I should use to develop a Swing based application? Most of them seems not up-to-dated. • How do I fix a broken connection to DB2 from a web application?

  I support some old web applications, VBScript-based ASP for the UI and VB6 COM modules for the business and data access layers. Last weekend, I installed DB2 Connect Enterprise Edition v8 fixpack 14 on several Windows 2000 servers, and one of the web apps errors out on null data when it calls the built in VBScript function FormatNumber. This numeric data is retrieved by a SQL Server query, but the only way the SQL Server column is populated is with the calculated results returned from a DB2 query earlier in a progression through several pages. When I installed DB2 Connect EE, one of the components loaded was MDAC 2.7. I followed corporate instructions and had the installation save an ODBC System Data Source, which reported a good connection when I tested it after the install. For what it's worth, the project references in the production VB6 modules pointed to MDAC 2.5. I have tried recompiling and deploying to COM on my test server new versions of the VB6 modules referencing MDAC 2.7. My development environment is Windows XP Pro, with MDAC 2.8 and DB2 Connect EE v9.5 installed. When I deployed the updated VB6 dlls, the CreateObject fails to instantiate the classes with the error message that "The class does not support automation or the requested interface". I've rolled the DB2 Connect install back and have reinstall v8 of the DB2 runtime client, which was the previous environment. The problem, however, persists.

Generics always confuse me, so I wrote some code to exercise the sample. • SQL Server 2000 intermittent connection exceptions on production server - specific environment probl

  We've been having intermittent problems causing users to be forcibly logged out of out application. Our set-up is ASP.Net/C# web application on Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition with SQL Server 2000 on the back end. We've recently performed a major product upgrade on our client's VMWare server (we have a guest instance dedicated to us) and whereas we had none of these issues with the previous release the added complexity that the new upgrade brings to the product has caused a lot of issues. We are also running SQL Server 2000 (build 8.00.2039, or SP4) and the IIS/ASP.NET (.Net v2.0.50727) application on the same box and connecting to each other via a TCP/IP connection. Primarily, the exceptions being thrown are: System.IndexOutOfRangeException: Cannot find table 0. System.ArgumentException: Column 'password' does not belong to table Table. [This exception occurs in the log in script, even though there is clearly a password column available] System.InvalidOperationException: There is already an open DataReader associated with this Command which must be closed first. [This one is occurring very regularly] System.InvalidOperationException: This SqlTransaction has completed; it is no longer usable. System.ApplicationException: ExecuteReader requires an open and available Connection. The connection's current state is connecting. System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. And just today, for the first time: System.Web.UI.ViewStateException: Invalid viewstate. We have load tested the app using the same number of concurrent users as the production server and cannot reproduce these errors. They are very intermittent and occur even when there are only 8/9/10 user connections. My gut is telling me its ASP.NET - SQL Server 2000 connection issues.. We've pretty much ruled out code-level Data Access Layer errors at this stage (we've a development team of 15 experienced developers working on this) so we think its a specific production server environment issue.

• Help using RDA on a Desktop Applicaton?

  I have a .NET 3.5 Compact Framework project that uses RDA for moving data between its mobile device's local SqlCe database and a remote MSSql-2008 server(it uses RDA Push and Pull). The server machine a virtual directory with sqlcesa35.dll (v3.5.5386.0) setup for RDA. We usually install these cabs on the mobile devices and the RDA process does not have any problems: sqlce.wce5.armv4i.cab sqlce.repl.wce5.armv4i.cab Now I am trying to run this application as a desktop application. RDA Pull (download) has been working well. But the RDA Push (upload) is giving me some problems. This is the exception that I get on the desktop application when I try to use RDA Push: System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeException The Client Agent and Server Agent component versions are incompatible. The compatible versions are: Client Agent versions 3.0 and 3.5 with Server Agent versions 3.5 and Client Agent version 3.5 with Server Agent version 3.5. Re-install the replication components with the matching versions for client and server agents. [ 35,30,Client Agent version = ,Server Agent version = ] I have tried copying the file C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition\v3.5\Desktop\SqlServerCe.dll (v3.5.5692.0) to bin\debug I have also tried copying another version of SqlServerCe.dll (v3.0.5206.0) to bin\debug. But this just gives me a slightly different exception: System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeException [ 35,30 ] Is there a different setup or any different dlls that I need to use? Thanks, -Joel

• Architecture for new ASP.NET web application

  I'm maintaining an application which currently is just a web service (built with WCF) and a database backend. The web service is built in layers with a linq-to-sql data access part with core functionality in an own assembly and on top of that the web service assembly which contains the WCF code. The core assembly also handles all business logic rules (very few actually). The customer now wants a Web interface for the application instead of just accessing it through other applications which are consuming the web service. I'm quite lost on modern web application design, so I would like some advice on what architecture and frameworks to use for the web application. The web application will be using the same core assembly with business rules and the linq-to-sql data access layer as the web service. Some concepts I've thought about are: ASP.NET MVC Webforms AJAX controls - possibly leting the AJAX controls access the existing web service through JSON. Are there any more concepts I should look into? Which one is the best for a fresh project? The development tools are Visual Studio 2008 Team Edition for Developers targeting .NET 3.5. An upgrade to Visual Studio 2010 Premium (or maybe even Ultimate) is possible if it gives any benefits.

• Legitimate uses of the Function constructor

  As repeatedly said, it is considered bad practice to use the Function constructor (also see the ECMAScript Language Specification, 5th edition, § 15.3.2.1): new Function ([arg1[, arg2[, … argN]],] functionBody) (where all arguments are strings containing argument names and the last (or only) string contains the function body). To recapitulate, it is said to be slow, as explained by the Opera team: Each time […] the Function constructor is called on a string representing source code, the script engine must start the machinery that converts the source code to executable code. This is usually expensive for performance – easily a hundred times more expensive than a simple function call, for example. (Mark ‘Tarquin’ Wilton-Jones) Though it's not that bad, according to this post on MDC (I didn't test this myself using the current version of Firefox, though). Crockford adds that [t]he quoting conventions of the language make it very difficult to correctly express a function body as a string. In the string form, early error checking cannot be done. […] And it is wasteful of memory because each function requires its own independent implementation. Another difference is that a function defined by a Function constructor does not inherit any scope other than the global scope (which all functions inherit). (MDC) Apart from this, you have to be attentive to avoid injection of malicious code, when you create a new Function using dynamic contents. Lots of disadvantages and it is intelligible that ECMAScript 5 discourages the use of the Function constructor by throwing an exception when using it in strict mode (§ 13.1). That said, T.J. Crowder says in an answer that [t]here's almost never any need for the similar […] new Function(...), either, again except for some advanced edge cases. So, now I am wondering: what are these “advanced edge cases”? Are there legitimate uses of the Function constructor?

• Get a "sqlceqp35.dll" error when debugging but not when running deployed code.

  In our current windows mobile project a problem while debugging recently arised. When trying to debug the code it throws an exception on the open command on a connection to the local database. The message is "A SQL Server Compact DLL could not be loaded. Reinstall SQL Server Compact Edition. [ DLL Name = sqlceqp35.dll ]". Sometime it's an unknow error instead, with reference to the same file. If you execute the binary, thats deployd during the debug, on the device it runs without any problem. I've tried: Reinstall both .net and sqlce on the device. Changed the "specific version" on the reference properties in the project. The hardware I'm using is a Motorola MC70 with Windows mobile 5.0. The target platform of the project is windows mobile 5.0. Any ideas on what might cause this problem? EDIT: When I tried it on a MC75 I can debug it. The MC70 got OS Version: 05.01.0478 and the MC75 05.01.0478. My best guess now is that it's someway related to the OS version or the actual device.

• LEFT OUTER JOIN with a WHERE clause

  I have two tables. indRailType contains a list of the names paired with an ID value that I use in other tables to indicate the rail type. WO_BreakerRail contains a date column and a rail code colume that corresponds to the same code in indRailType and some other data. There's a row in WO_BreakerRail for any activity on each rail type, for every date. So I could have 3 rows dated for 3/19/2010, each row indicates a different rail code, and what happened. When I use the following LEFT OUTER JOIN, I get a table with all the types of rail, with nulls in the rows where nothing happened on the 19th. Now, this is only working because I only have one date represented in my WO_BreakerRail table right now, the 19th. When I add more rows with different dates, things will go haywire. This is my SQL statement, which right now gives me exactly the results I want: SELECT WO_BreakerRail.ID, indRailType.RailType, WO_BreakerRail.CreatedPieces, WO_BreakerRail.OutsideSource, WO_BreakerRail.Charged, WO_BreakerRail.Rejected, WO_BreakerRail.RejectedToCrop FROM indRailType LEFT OUTER JOIN WO_BreakerRail ON indRailType.RailCode = WO_BreakerRail.RailCode Now, when I add in a WHERE WO_BreakerRail.Date = @Date clause I lose all the rows in the JOIN which nothing happened. I don't want that. From reading up, it sounds like a FULL OUTER JOIN is what I want, but SQL Server Compact Edition doesn't support FULL OUTER JOINs. Is there a way around this, or am I looking for something else entirely?

• Problem changing Java version using alternatives

  I'm not quite sure how I got into this mess, but for some reason I'm not able to change the current version of Java using alternatives. I can run alternatives --config java and type my selection but when I echo the version number for either java or javac, it spits back out 1.5 every time (despite alternatives showing the current version is 1.6). The server I'm working with is running RHEL5, by the way. I have verified that the paths used in alternatives are pointing to the correct directories. • hibernate c3p0 broken pipe

  Hi, I'm using hibernate 3 with c3p0 for a program which constantly extracts data from some source and writes it to a database. Now the problem is, that the database might become unavailable for some reasons (in the simplest case: i simply shut it down). If anything is about to be written to the database there should not be any exception - the query should wait for all eternity until the database becomes available again. If I'm not mistaken this is one of the things the connection pool could do for me: if there is a problem with the db, just retry to connect - in the worst case for infinity. But instead i get a broken pipe exception, sometimes followed by connection refused and then the exception is passed to my own code, which shouldn't happen. Even if I catch the exception, how could i cleanly reinitialize hibernate again? (So far without c3p0 i simply built the session factory again, but i wouldn't be surprised if that could leak connections (or is it ok to do so?)). The database is Virtuoso open source edition.   I'm trying to use SimpleXML to parse an XML document (an ItemLookupResponse for a book from the Amazon Product Advertising API) which contains the following element: <ItemAttributes> <Author>Shane Conder</Author> <Author>Lauren Darcey</Author> <Manufacturer>Pearson Educacion</Manufacturer> <ProductGroup>Book</ProductGroup> <Title>Android Wireless Application Development: Barnes & Noble Special Edition</Title> </ItemAttributes> My problem is that I don't know how to deal with the multiple possible Author elements. Here's what I have right now for the corresponding POJO (Plain Old Java Object), keeping in mind that it's not handling the case of multiple Authors: @Element public class ItemAttributes { @Element public String Author; @Element public String Manufacturer; @Element public String Title; } (I don't care about the ProductGroup, so it's not in the class -- I'm just setting SimpleXML's strict mode to off to allow for that.) I couldn't find an example in the documentation that corresponded with such a case. Using an ElementList with (inline=true) seemed along the right lines, but I didn't see how to do it for String (as opposed to a separate Author class, which I have no need for and don't see how it would even work). Here's a similar question and answer, but for PHP: php - simpleXML how to access a specific element with the same name as others? I don't know what the Java equivalent would be to the accepted answer. Thanks in advance.

• Querying a database using Cocoa.

  Hello everybody. Before I start a disclaimer, I should add a little disclaimer, that I am relatively new to Cocoa development and C in general. However I do have a copy of 'Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X 3rd edition' by Aaron Hillegass, which I am working through and using as a base, if anybody has a copy I am using the 'AmaZone' example on page 346 as a template and base. I trying to develop a small client app that takes a search string then displays results from a database accordingly. The database will contain a: list of files, their location, description & creation date, so for the moment the field number and types will remain the same. After looking around on SO, I saw something like: NSURL *myURL = [NSURL URLWithString:@"http://www.myserver.com/results.php"]; NSArray *sqlResults = [[NSArray alloc] initWithContentsOfURL:myURL]; I've worked with php before, so my current thinking after seeing this is create a php script on the server that queries the database, and creates an XML output. And with the XML response, just parse it. Would this be ok? as is there any major pitfalls anybody can see, that I can't. I know there are some database bundles, I've had a look at BaseTen for Postgres, but being relatively new to this, didn't want to get in over my head. Or if anybody else has any other suggestions and ideas, they would be greatly appreciated.

• Visual Studio 2010: very slow web applications debugging!

  I recently installed Visual Studio 2010 (Ultimate edition, final version released in April), and found that debugging a web application became very slow (2-3 times slower than in Visual Studio 2008)! I took the same web application and checked the speed of loading of one of its pages in VS 2008 and VS 2010, and compared the time it takes to load the page. I tested it using 2 approaches: 1) debugging under ASP.NET Development Server (by pressing the "Start" button) and 2) using ASP.NET Development Server without debugging (by using the "View in Browser" menu command). And I got the following results for Visual Studio 2008 and 2010. 1) ASP.NET Development Server withoud debugging ("View in Browser"): the speed of page loading is the same in VS 2008 and 2010. 2) Debugging under ASP.NET Development Server ("Start" button): in VS 2010 the page takes more time to load than in VS 2008 - VS 2010 debugging is 2-3 times slower than in VS 2008! 3) At the same time, when debugging a web application in VS 2008, it takes the same time to load the page compared to when using only the "View in Browser" command. That is, VS 2008 debugging does not introduce any overhead to page loading in the web browser! I wanted to make sure that other people have the same problem with slow debugging of web applications in VS 2010. Can this issue be solved by any means? BTW, I am using Windows XP SP3. Thank you.

• Looking for combinations of server and embedded database engines

  I'm redesigning an application that will be run as both a single user and multiuser application. It is a .NET 2.0 application. I'm looking for server and embedded databases that work well together. I want to deploy the embedded database in the single user setup and of course, the server in the multiuser setup. Past releases have been based on MSDE but in the past year we've been having a lot of install issues: new installs hanging and leaving the system in an unknown state, upgrades disconnecting the database, etc. I migrated the application to SQL Server 2005 and the install is more reliable (as long as a user doesn't try to install over a broken MSDE installation). Since next year's release will be a complete redesign I figured now's the best time to address the database issue as well. The database has been abstracted from the rest of the application so I just need to choose which database(s) to use and write an implementation for each one. So far I've considered: SQL Server/ SQL Server Compact Edition Firebird (same DB engine is available in two different server modes and an embedded dll) Each has its own merits but I'm also interested in any other suggestions. This is a fairly simple program and its data requirements are simple as well. I don't expect it to strain whatever database I eventually choose. So easy configuration and deployment hold more weight than performance.

• how do I zoom to normal text size in vs2008?

  I can not find any help on this issue in vs2008 help, Google, or SO. Scenario: I'm looking at a source file in vs2008 SP1; Windows 2003 Server SP2 Standard Edition, 1280x1024. The irrelevant name of this file is index.aspx. What is relevant is that the file has only 65 lines of code. The print is unreadably small--less than 4 point. It uses less than a third of the vs2008 text window vertically and less that a quarter of the vs2008 text window horizontally. It's not just index.aspx; e.g. another file with 142 lines only fills about 3/4 of the vs2008 text window vertically and less that a quarter of the vs2008 text window horizontally. Possible cause: Probably, but not certainly, I found the equivalent of zoom in/zoom out such as one finds in products like Microsoft Word. However, I've explored many vs2008 toolbars and other customization options and unfortunately I can not find out how to get myself out of this mess. Window, Reset Window Layout has no effect on the text size; my tiny text size did not change. QUESTION: how do I zoom vs2008 text size in and out and back to normal size? Thank you.   I downloaded Eclipse Juno Java EE edition and installed ADT plugin. I created a new Android Application Project from Eclipse and in the wizard I created an activity called TaskariActivity. After I pressed finish, it created the project but not the activity and the wizard didn't close. I pressed cancel. No activity or anything in the src folder. I created a new activity by right clicking on src, selecting new -> other -> Android -> activity. I selected BlankActivity (as earlier when I was creating the project), selected the earlier created project in the Project combo box. I set the Activity name as TaskariActivity, layout name as activity_main and title as TaskariActivity. Next I selected navigation type and I set it to Tabs + Swipe (I thought this would make me tabs and everything I had to do would be just inserting the elements and the actions for them). I pressed next, nothing happened. Finish didn't also do anything. I pressed cancel and an activity wasn't created. So, how can I create an Android application like in the earlier version of Eclipse? It automatically created the activity and it was ready be run out of the box. Now it won't generate any files and the new activity wizard doesn't work. Help?

• (500) Internal Server Error with C# and Web Dev 2008 Express

  The code below is generic, found in a variety of places, including a book I have. I have used it as a base for a working program in VS 2005. Now I've resurrected it with my current Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition and I seem to have problems connecting it to my default development server (I don't have IIS on my XP). The error is: (500) Internal Server Error. • Obfuscating ASP.Net dll breaks web application.

  I wouldn't usually bother to obfuscate a web application DLL but right now I have to share some server space with someone who might have a conflict of interest and might be tempted to steal the deal and decompile it. Not an ideal solution I know but hey. So I am using VS 2005, a web deployment project (which compiles into a single DLL) and Dotfuscator community edition. When I obfuscate the DLL the web application breaks and I get some message like Could not load type 'Browse' from assembly MyAssembly So I searched around and found that if I disable renaming then it should fix it. Which it does. But now when I look at the DLL using .Net reflector I can see everything again. So this seems kind of pointless. Is there a way to get this to work? Is there a better way to protect my DLL from someone I have to share a server with? UPDATE: I figured out my problem. All the classnames have changed but now all my <%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="mycode.aspx.cs" Inherits="mycode" % is incorrect because mycode no longer exists. It is now aef or something. Is there any tool out there that will also change the names of the Codefile and Inherits tags?

• What is wrong with accessing DBI directly?

  Hi everyone! I'm currently reading Effective Perl Programming (2nd edition). I have come across a piece of code which was described as being poorly written, but I don't yet understand what's so bad about it, or how it should be improved. It would be great if someone could explain the matter to me. Here's the code in question: sub sum_values_per_key { my ( $class, $dsn, $user, $password, $parameters ) = @_; my %results; my $dbh = DBI->connect( $dsn, $user, $password, $parameters ); my $sth = $dbh->prepare( 'select key, calculate(value) from my_table'); $sth->execute(); # ... fill %results ... $sth->finish(); $dbh->disconnect(); return \%results; } The example comes from the chapter on testing your code (p. 324/325). The sentence that has left me wondering about how to improve the code is the following: Since the code was poorly written and accesses DBI directly, you'll have to create a fake DBI object to stand in for the real thing. I have probably not understood a lot of what the book has so far been trying to teach me, or I have skipped the section relevant for understanding what's bad practice about the above code... Well, thanks in advance for your help!

• using a 64-bit compiler in microsoft visual c++

  this question is essentially identical to an earlier question i had that didn't receive any answers. hopefully someone can help me out this time. i am trying to compile a vc++ project as 64 bit using visual c++ express 2010. i know that the 64 bit compiler does not come with the default installation of vc++ express so i installed windows sdk for windows 7 as specified here (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/9yb4317s.aspx) which includes the 64 bit compiler as i understand. however, there is still no 64 bit option in the configuration manager for vc++. after some searching i found and completed this tutorial (http://jenshuebel.wordpress.com/2009/02/12/visual-c-2008-express-edition-and-64-bit-targets/) as well as the various links at the bottom of this page. despite all my efforts, i still cannot get the 64 bit compiler to show in vc++ (i.e. the 64 bit compiler won't show under "active solutions platform" in the configuration manager). if anyone has any experience/tips with getting this to work i would really appreciate it. fyi - i am running windows 7(x64).

• Update SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2008: Benefits please?

  Hi there I'm looking for the benefits of upgrading from SQL Server 2000 to 2008. I was wondering: What database features can we leverage with 2008 that we can't now? What new TSQL features can we look forward to using? What performance benefits can we expect to see? What else will make management go for it? And the converse: What problems can we expect to encounter? What other problems have people found when migrating? Why fix something that isn't (technically) broken? We work in a Java shop, so any .NET / CLR stuff won't rock our world. We also use Eclipse as our main development so any integration with Visual Studio won't be a plus. We do use SQL Server Management Studio however. Some background: Our main database machine is a 32bit Dell Intel Xeon MP CPU 2.0GHz, 40MB of RAM with Physical Address Extension running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition. We will not be changing our hardware. Our databases in total are under a TB with some having more than 200 tables. But they are busy and during busy times we see 60-80% CPU utilisation. Apart form the fact that SQL Server 2000 is coming close to end of life, why should we upgrade? Any and all contributions are appreciated!
