• Importing tab delimited file into array in Visual Basic 2013 [migrated]

  I am needing to import a tab delimited text file that has 11 columns and an unknown number of rows (always minimum 3 rows). I would like to import this text file as an array and be able to call data from it as needed, throughout my project. And then, to make things more difficult, I need to replace items in the array, and even add more rows to it as the project goes on (all at runtime). Hopefully someone can suggest code corrections or useful methods. I'm hoping to use something like the array style sMyStrings(3,2), which I believe would be the easiest way to control my data. Any help is gladly appreciated, and worthy of a slab of beer. • Frustrated with MythTV 0.26

  I've been using MythTV for a while now. Until a hardware crash I had a 0.25 box running without problems. Had to get new hardware and am now in the process of setting up 0.26. Every time I pick a menu option, it hangs for 1 minute. Every time I try to start the backend, same thing. I pick a new theme in the frontend, but it never gets used. I try to test audio, but all I get is static (from the proper channels though). I've setup the storage groups in the backend and put a video in /storage/videos but the front end won't see it when I scan for changes. I make changes in the front end configuration and they don't get saved (or get lost randomly 2-3 reloads later). Obviously there is something I am doing catastrophically wrong, but I have no idea what. Are the storage groups not working yet? Maybe I need to delete all the storage group entries and just use the front end override to set the path? I'm currently using lvm across 3 hard disks, and this has worked well for me in the past. I'd like to use storage groups, but frankly I don't see them working yet at all - especially not for videos (which is what we watch 99% of the time). Anyone have any suggestions for me to try before I just call 0.26 bad names and wipe the system?

• Why doesn't it seem to be any development in the field of 3D VR gear, especially with regard to gaming?

  I remember that way back around 1995, there was this big craze with VR in the media, a whole bunch of (mostly mediocre) games labeled as "virtual-reality-interactive-movie (...)" were published. If I recall correctly, the first 3D VR helmet was called VFX-1 and was sold bundled with Descent and some dedicated joystick. I never owned one, and I read just one review which was mostly enthusiastic, but pointed to some weak points, like the eyes getting tired after an hour or so of playing. Then the whole thing basically flickered down and died. I suppose the main reason it wasn't successful was that the hardware of the day was not powerful enough, the VR gear's design wasn't perfected to make it comfortable and natural to use, and the companies that made it failed to market it successfully. What I can't understand is why isn't there any development in the field today. There is some vr-ish hardware mostly targeted at the consoles (Kinect, Wii remote, TrackIR), but all projects of creating some 3d head-mounted display system seem to be in early infancy, appear once in a trade show somewhere and aren't heard of again. I think it could work great with head tracking and some of today's shooters, flight sims (trackIR is nice but the movement scale translation is awkward) and other games with an FPP POV. Is there any technological reason why decent vr headgear can't be made today, or is it just that nobody really cares/everyone is scared to repeat the '90s failure?

• Install Mac OS Lion on Macbook with existing Ubuntu 12.04 dual boot

  I don't usually create my own questions, because I can find what I need through other people's questions. However, this one doesn't seem to be anywhere, except in one place where someone is talking about not using Apple hardware. So here it goes. I am using Apple hardware. I have a MacBook 1,1 with Intel Core2Duo running Ubuntu Precise Pangolin flawlessly. I never considered starting with Mac OSx and dual-booting because I never liked Mac OS. Now that I'm realizing that the only way I'm going to be able to run my DAW (Reaper) nicely and use a Firewire recording interface is to run Mac OSx, I'm considering it again. I want to go the opposite direction of most people and install Mac OSx next to an existing Ubuntu installation and have a boot menu with refit. I've installed refit in Ubuntu and I've converted the .dmg file for Mac OS Lion to a .iso file. Now, should I mount the .iso in Ubuntu and run it there, or burn a DVD and restart? I'm trying to gauge how to do this without hurting my existing Ubuntu installation. I will of course keep looking for existing answers in the meantime.

• USB and CD data cannot be read or mounted in 12.10

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.10. I wrote a data disk using Brasero Disk Burner, but the system cannot read the CD. I tried to write the same data into my HP v220w pen drive but now there is an error in that too. It shows the following: Error mounting /dev/sdb at /media/aravind4j/Aravind4j: Command-line `mount -t "ntfs" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=0077,fmask=0177" "/dev/sdb" "/media/aravind4j/Aravind4j"' exited with non-zero exit status 13: $MFTMirr does not match $MFT (record 0). Failed to mount '/dev/sdb': Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details. (udisks-error-quark, 0) I used a NTFS file system for the pen drive as you can recognize from the above statement. I would like to recover the files so please help me recover the files without formatting the drive.

• How do I require use of the 5 GHz band when connecting to a Wireless N access point?

  What is says in the topic: there's a Wireless N access point to which I'd like to connect using the 5 GHz band exclusively. How does one accomplish this? Using the directive band=a in the connection configuration file in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections doesn't seem to affect anything (/var/log/syslog still shows attempts by wpa_supplicant to connect using the 2.4 GHz band), and running iwconfig wlan0 freq 5G per this question results in the following error: Error for wireless request "Set Frequency" (8B04) : SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. • Trying to install Proprietory Nvidia Graphics Drivers

  After reading and trying many different suggestions for some hours, I returned to this how-to: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia The first problem I encounter is how to identify which of the listed drivers support my Nvidia GEForce 630M graphics card. Following the links doesn't really help, since it is not stated there either (except where support for a new driver was added later which is explicitly stated, but the original devices covered are not). However, even if I knew, if it doesn't appear in the 'Additional Drivers' dialogue (see below), how will I install it? Second Issue: The article goes on to say that available drivers for my hardware are usually listed in 'Additional Drivers'. In my case, they aren't. Unfortunately, it doesn't tell me how to correct that or work around it? I've checked the bios and there is no way offered there to disable the integrated graphics, only the Nvidia graphics. I've also tried each available option in this: $ sudo update-alternatives --config i386-linux-gnu_gl_conf My system is an Acer Aspire 4752G bought May 2012. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04LTS. uname -a : 3.2.0-38-generic-pae #61-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 19 12:39:51 UTC 2013 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux It's 64bit hardware but I installed 32bit OS for greater software compatibility. Running $ sudo tail -fn 500 /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep '(EE)' returns" (WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown. [ 28.886] (EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found) The reason for wanting the proprietor y drivers is because my laptop comes with 3D accelerated graphics adaptor and so rather than confining myself to struggling with the on-board graphics, I would rather use it. I also want to experiment with using it for bitmining (which uses the GPU's for computing power).

• Discovery methods

  In Ops Center, asset discovery is a process in which the software determines what assets exist in your environment. You can't monitor an asset, or do anything to it through Ops Center, until it's discovered. I've seen a couple of questions about how to discover various types of asset, so I thought I'd explain the discovery methods and what they each do. Find Assets - This discovery method searches for service tags on all known networks. Service tags are small files on some hardware and operating systems that provide basic identification info. Once a service tag has been found, you provide credentials to manage the asset. This method can discover assets quickly, but only if the target assets have service tags. Add Assets with discovery profile - This method lets you specify targets by providing IP addresses, IP ranges, or hostnames, as well as the credentials needed to connect to and manage these assets. You can create discovery profiles for any type of asset. Declare asset - This method lets you specify the details of a server, with or without a configured service processor. You can then use Ops Center to install a new operating system or configure the SP. This method works well for new hardware. These methods are all discussed in more detail in the Asset Management chapter of the Feature Reference guide.

  This question is targeted at mainstream or gamer-grade software-based audio/sound enhancements, found in highly integrated computing and entertainment systems like laptops, tablets and smartphones. These are mostly marketed with fancy badges of known audio-releated brands on the product or packaging, while being mostly uncertain about the actual implementation or components used and poorly differentiated from the general audio capabilities of the system or device. This question is not about actual hardware like speakers. If your headphones are not properly detected, your speakers are assigned wrong, work partially or not at all then your soundcard or chip is not properly detected and you should take a look at troubleshooting audio issues. This question is also not about enthusiast or recording-grade hardware like recording interfaces, amplifiers and DACs in a variety of formfactors. • opengl libraries for ubuntu running on Virtual Box

  I am having Ubuntu 10.04 running on VirtualBox. Guest additions are installed successfully. But Guest additions do not provide the OpenGL library. To run open GL demo what needs to be installed. Some google links suggest Mesa utils. By my understanding is Mesa utils do not use vbox drivers to achieve hardware acceleration. Ubuntu 10.04 is running on VirtualBox and not on bare metal. The host comprise of Zx400 CPU with nvidia graphics driver. But this is not relevant since I would be using the vbox drivers provided by guest additions on VirtualBox. In this scenario how do I get OpenGL libraries on Ubuntu?. (Specially I am looking for solution other than Mesa, since mesa has support only for VMware and not for VirtualBox) How to get Opengl libraries which use vbox drivers for 3D hardware accleration?? • New SPC2 benchmark- The 7420 KILLS it !!!

  This is pretty sweet. The new SPC2 benchmark came out last week, and the 7420 not only came in 2nd of ALL speed scores, but came in #1 for price per MBPS. Check out this table. The 7420 score of 10,704 makes it really fast, but that's not the best part. The price one would have to pay in order to beat it is ridiculous. Very sweet for Oracle. So let's see, the 7420 is the fastest per $. The 7420 is the cheapest per MBPS. The 7420 has incredible, built-in features, management services, analytics, and protocols. It's extremely stable and as a cluster has no single point of failure. It won the Storage Magazine award for best NAS system this year. So how long will it be before it's the number 1 NAS system in the market? What are the biggest hurdles still stopping the widespread adoption of the ZFSSA? From what I see, it's three things: 1. Administrator's comfort level with older legacy systems. 2. Politics 3. Past issues with Oracle Support.   I see all of these issues crop up regularly. Number 1 just takes time and education. Number 3 takes time with our new, better, and growing support team. many of them came from Oracle and there were growing pains when they went from a straight software-model to having to also support hardware. Number 2 is tricky, but it's the job of the sales teams to break through the internal politics and help their clients see the value in oracle hardware systems. Benchmarks like this will help.

• Extreme Portability: OpenJDK 7 and GlassFish 3.1.1 on Power Mac G5!

  Occasionally you hear someone grumble about platform support for some portion or combination of the Java product "stack". As you're about to see, this really is not as much of a problem as you might think. Our friend John Yeary was able to pull off a pretty slick feat with his vintage Power Mac G5. In his words: Using a build script sent to me by Kurt Miller, build recommendations from Kelly O'Hair, and the great work of the BSD Port team... I created a new build of OpenJDK 7 for my PPC based system using the Zero VM. The results are fantastic. I can run GlassFish 3.1.1 along with all my enterprise applications. I recently had the opportunity to pick up an old G5 for little money and passed on it. What would I do with it? At the time, I didn't think it would be more than a space-consuming novelty. Turns out...I could have had some fun and a useful piece of hardware at the same time. Maybe it's time to go bargain-hunting again. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10) I have been unsuccesful to connect through an ipv6 address, but I can still connect to a network when assigned an ipv4 address. While searching for an answer or a solution, I know the kernel can handle dealing with ipv6. So, what's left to question should be the hardware handling the connection. Unfortunately nothing comes up when I specifically try to search for information on BCM4306 ipv6 capabilities. I just tried using a wired connection to establish an ipv6 only connection to the network I'm on right now, but I got the same behavior of constant disconnections. Maybe it's not the hardware? I don't know.. I don't want to disable ipv6 on my machine as relevant networks I'll be connecting to will be using it exclusively, but I'm not sure what is wrong and which parts should I replace/fix to get this working.. Could someone please point me in a fruitful direction to get ipv6 working under Ubuntu 12.04?

• Brightness going up to 100% on loading certain websites in Chrome

  I'm using Google Chrome version 21.0.1180.89 on Ubuntu 12.04 and my laptop is a Sony VAIO VPCCW15FL (spec sheet). My video driver is the propietary "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (post-release updates)(version-current updates)". After installing Ubuntu, I discovered that neither the brightness control buttons (hardware) or the brightness slider (software) worked, and found out I could get the hardware buttons to work by installing the nvidiabl.deb package and oBacklight script. I'm using nvidiabl-dkms 0.77 and oBacklight 0.3.8. Still, the slider on the Ubuntu "Settings" does not work, but I don't care. There is an annoying thing happening when loading certain pages in Google Chrome: the brightness goes up to 100% when loading the webpage or when leaving it (closing the tab or typing a different URL on the omnibox). However, the "brightness tooltip" (that default brightness notification) remembers the position it was set to, so if I adjust the brightness with the HW buttons, the level gets adjusted relative to the value it was set to before "going 100%". I disabled the flash PPAPI plugin, but left the NPAPI plugin enabled, and the problem went away for pages with flash content. Still, the same thing happens when viewing HTML5 video, or when loading, for example, the Chrome Web Store or using the Scratchpad extension. I suppose it has to do with the rendering of certain elements using the GPU, but this is just a guess. This brightness thing does not happen when using Firefox 15.0 or any other application I have used yet. Does anybody know why this may be happening and what could I do to fix this without changing browser? Thanks a lot.

• Dim (NEARLY blank) laptop screen, secondary screen works - why?

  My laptop screen is (almost) black while my secondary screen is fine. I believe it to be backlight / brightness related. Problem description it starts when I start the laptop system loads and works fine, just screen has problems I can see the screen though very faintly / dimly - it's hard to see anything which ain't very white e.g. starting screen has big Thinkpad logo in white, large font - I can see it, though very dimly second screen works very well Official backligtht debugging: using acpi setting as prescribed there for Thinkpads didn't help I can see an entry in /sys/class/backlight/ and it changes when I press hotkeys for brightness (current backlight power for instance goes up or down) acpi-off didn't helpm neither did acpi_backlight=vendor Hardware data Laptop is Thinkpad Edge with glossy screen. 4 processors, 2 cores, exemplary CPU data from cat /proc/cpuinfo reports Genuine Intel i5 (M 480 @ 2.67GHz). • Amazon EC2 vs Dedicated server at Hetzner, what's the use for EC2?

  After searching the web I still can't find the reason to use EC2. What's the point to scale EC2? If you expect a huge burst in traffic, they say. OK, but what if you already have a couple of sites with good traffic, and for example medium reserved EC2 instance is not enough. You are paying $36.60(medium reserved for 1year) in EU(Ireland) + traffic + optional expenses for databases and S3 if you use them. Of course as some point when you are under $56.6-$66.1 you can optimize your hosting costs with Amazon EC2. But when you get at some point if purchase EX4 server from Hetzner, it will surpass your perfomance needs for a long time, before you get a massive traffic. (I am wrong?) CPU: i7-2600 Quadcore (3.4-3.8 Ghz) RAM: 16 GB HDD: 2x3 TB SATA (6 Gbit/s) - I think that disc performance of a dedicated is better then of Amazon EBS Traffic: 10 TiB in month included. This is what you get from Hetzner for $56(- 19% VAT) or $66 for EU residents. Please, tell me what's the reason to use Amazon? Which load won't a server from Hetzner take, but Amazon Auto Scaling will? The maintenance of dedicated vs EC2 is still the same? Or hardware failure at Amazon, won't ruin your EBS storage? I'm still not at the level when I need expensive hosting, but want to know beforehand, just to be sure if Amazon infrastructure is better then pure performance of Hetzner's hardware.

• Why do VMs need to be "stack machines" or "register machines" etc.?

  (This is an extremely newbie-ish question). I've been studying a little about Virtual Machines. Turns out a lot of them are designed very similarly to physical or theoretical computers. I read that the JVM for example, is a 'stack machine'. What that means (and correct me if I'm wrong) is that it stores all of it's 'temporary memory' on a stack, and makes operations on this stack for all of it's opcodes. For example, the source code 2 + 3 will be translated to bytecode similar to: push 2 push 3 add My question is this: JVMs are probably written using C/C++ and such. If so, why doesn't the JVM execute the following C code: 2 + 3..? I mean, why does it need a stack, or in other VMs 'registers' - like in a physical computer? The underlying physical CPU takes care of all of this. Why don't VM writers simply execute the interpreted bytecode with 'usual' instructions in the language the VM is programmed with? Why do VMs need to emulate hardware, when the actual hardware already does this for us? Again, very newbie-ish questions. Thanks for your help

• Dell Powerdge840 2.4GHz 64 bit quad core

  I am having an issue, where I have changed the boot order to cdrom and turned off hd boot all together and still my system is unable to detect ubuntu and claims, no boot device found. Some additional information: When this same cd is inserted and dell is booted into win 2003 server (which is what is installed on this machine), it detects the cd drive but not the cd at all (keeps asking me to insert disc) I have also created a bootable flash drive using LinuxLive USB creator and when this is selected in boot order again am told no boot device detected. I was speaking to dell and they suggested perhaps there are no drivers on the actual ubuntu installation for the hardware on this Dell and hence the failure of this dell to detect the ubuntu cd. Now, I don't know too much about computers, but this last bit confused me a bit. If the system detects the hardware (when it is booting it sees the cd rom and in bios it sees when the flash drive is connected), then shouldn't it be able to read what is on those drives? However, if there is some firmware or software install that needs to happen, could someone please tell me where to find the correct drivers for ubuntu and dell poweredge to work together? Shall I be installing the desktop version or the server edition, also, 32 bit or 63 bit? Thank you in advance.
