  • What to check to see if server has enough free resources?

    The windows service I am writing will need to run some processor intensive operations once in a while (sound encoding wav - mp3) on a machine that takes part in real time voice communication (so I cannot just run them any-time). What would you check (what counters maybe) before running such operation? Can you point me to any good articles?

    View1 object, which is UIViewController subclass is the same object as File's Owner of View1 nib. So I should manually set the class in both places, one in MainWindow and another in View1 nib files? This sound artificial to me... Either I'm doing something wrong or there has to be better way.

    Running Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium on a HP Laptop. The system tray power meter never shows the time remaining in the system tray. Only really ever show a percentage remaining number as pictured. The windows help documentation on the "battery meter" seems to indicate that it should display a time remaining indicator, is this accurate? How accurate is the battery meter? The accuracy of what the battery meter reports—what percentage of a full charge remains and how long you can use your laptop before you must plug it in—depends on several factors. Most of these factors fall into the following two categories: What you use the laptop for. Because some activities drain the battery faster than others (for example, watching a DVD consumes more power than reading and writing e-mail), alternating between activities that have significantly different power requirements changes the rate at which your laptop uses battery power. This can vary the estimate of how much battery charge remains. Battery hardware and sensor circuitry. Newer, "smart" batteries are equipped with circuitry that calculates the measurements of charge remaining and reports the information to the battery meter.   • PC: Quick Freeze, then BSOD, then forced reboot, then freezes again

    Lately I have been experiencing a weird issue. My PC will hang for a second and then BSOD - it stays there, so I have to reboot. Once Windows starts again and I'm logged in, after 1-10min it freezes again, this time without BSOD. RECAP: 1 second freeze BSOD, hangs there I have to force-reboot Once PC rebooted, I log back into Windows second freeze between a 1-10min range, no BSOD (alternatively, I get a freeze with a constant sound/noise, no BSOD) I contacted my PC provider, who told me my graphics-card might be flawed (Quadro 4000), so I used a Quadro 2000 that they lend me. The issue still occurred. The issue now seemed to belong to a flawed RAM module. Following my provider's steps, I removed all but the first from the left column and kept using my PC for a week or so without any issues. I then added the bottom-right module, and so on, until all modules were back inside - I had no problems. Now it seemed that a simple take-out-put-back-in of the RAM modules had fixed the issue. However, after a few months, the issue was back. I redid all the RAM-swapping I had done before, and concluded that the lower-right module was flawed. My provider changed it for another, and everything was great until now. My PC froze again for barely a second, hanged on a BSOD, I rebooted it, logged-in to Windows to get a freeze (without BSOD or reboot) 40 seconds later. Something worth noting, is that every time I reboot after the BSOD, it is something within Chrome that freezes my PC (e.g. this time I clicked the "restore" button as Chrome mentioned it had exited unexpectedly - from the previous freeze obviously - and it instantly froze). Finally, the Event Viewer lists 2 critical events in the past hour as "ID: 41, Type: Kernel-Power". UPDATE 1: I realized that I did not mention an awkward fact about this issue. After I have gotten the 1-sec freeze followed by a BSOD, after I rebooted because the BSOD hanged, and after I logged back in to get another (this time, eternal) freeze and rebooted once again, the PC does not boot back up. The power-light is on, but my monitor says "no signal", as if the PC wouldn't really be turned on. This truly seems a like a power-related issue, doesn't it? UPDATE 2: I just got a freeze, but without BSOD. My screen froze (while on Chrome, which is starting to seem suspicious to me) with an ongoing sound/noise. I had to force-reboot my PC. I would say this is a graphics-card issue, but this issue also happened when I was using the Quadro 2000 from my provider. UPDATE 3: I just got a BSOD while trying to render something (quite heavy, actually) in 3ds Max 2012. I left the BSOD "running", as it said it was writing dump files to disk. However, the percentage number stayed at 0, so after 15 minutes I force-rebooted.   • Reinserted a RAID disk. Defined as foreign. Is import or clear the correct choice?

    I have re-inserted a RAID disk, on a DELL server with Windows Server 2008. The drive-status indicator was changing between a green and amber light, and the monitor gave the following message: There are offline or missing virtual drives with preserved cache. Please check the cables and ensure that all drives are present. Press any key to enter the configuration utility. I pressed a key and the PERC 6/I Integrated BIOS Configuration Utility showed that the RAID Status for that disk was Offline. After reinsertion of the disk the monitor is giving the following message: Foreign configuration(s) found on adapter. Press any key to continue or ‘C’ load the configuration utility, or press ‘F’ to import foreign configuration(s) and continue. After checking around on the net I am uncertain if I should choose import or clear. I cannot find out if an import means importing information from the array/system to the now foreign disk or the other way, i.e. importing information from the foreign disk to the array/system that was actually working fine. Also; if clear is a necessary thing to do ahead of a rebuild of that disk, or if clear means to clear the system to somehow make it ready to import the information from the foreign disk to the array/system, which is not what I want. I imagine that making the wrong choice here might be fatal. Please help clearing this out by telling what to choose and why.

    Is there an easy way to get metrics on all processes that start with the letters XYZ? I have about 80 processes that I have to monitor individually that all start with the prefix XYZ. I have created a query using the sigar shell: ps State.Name.sw=XYZ, which will give me a list of the processes that I want. What I need to do is define this list of processes through said query and collect and track statistics from the Process service: http://support.hyperic.com/display/hypcomm/Process+service What I need is 3 or 4 key statistics for each of the XYZ processes defined by my query to show up as graphs in the web front end. Note: Hyperic HQ server is installed on a windows machine and I'm monitoring a Linux box via an agent.   • Safe mode boot with no change on screen but ongoing hard disk activity - why?

    I have a machine with a dying hard drive - bad sectors are starting to multiply :-( The first sign (24 hours ago) was that it had an unmountable boot volume. At this time, I tried booting to safe mode with command prompt, which worked, after which I rebooted normally and ran a chkdsk. It has since been working as well as I could expect, but slowly getting less reliable. So I scheduled another chkdsk on both partitions (C: - boot, D: - data), having freed up a lot of space on both partitions to give Windows a little more scope for repairs (hopefully?). I then rebooted. On reboot, it protested about the unmountable boot volume again, so I booted to safe mode. I got the same list of drivers loaded as yesterday, and then no change to the screen for the past 2 hours. However, I see a flickering hard drive indicator light - not always on, but seldom ever off. What is happening? Is the chkdsk that runs in safe mode one which produces nothing on the screen and so chkdsk could be doing its thing... or is Windows still trying (but failing) to boot into Safe Mode?

  • Wireless USB keyboard and mouse can wake system, but then receiver is inactive

    I have a Microsoft brand USB device that acts as a receiver for a wireless Microsoft Keyboard and a wireless Mouse. When it's operating normally, there are LEDs on the device indicating Caps Lock, Num Lock and Function Lock, of which the latter 2 are usually lit. It is plugged into a Dell Isnpiron 531 with Windows 7 32-bit running on an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core processor 5000+. When the computer goes to sleep (the power indicator on the main box is flashing), I can wake it by moving the mouse. So far all is good. However, something changed in, I think, the past couple weeks (I suspect due to a Microsoft driver update problem). Before the change, after waking the computer, everything would operate normally as far as I could tell, but now after waking the computer, the receiver has no lights on, and the keyboard and mouse are completely unresponsive (which is odd, considering the mouse woke up the computer). There is a button on the receiver that's supposed to reset the wireless connection and flash the lights while it does so, but it has no effect in this state. It's like the receiver doesn't have power (but how would the system know I moved the mouse, unless the power was on until it woke up?). I have checked the BIOS/CMOS settings or whatever you call them, and did not see anything related to USB in the power management section. I have checked Windows 7 device manager and ensured that all the USB Root Hub devices have the setting unchecked for allowing the USB power to be turned off. Like I said, this was working before, and the only thing I can think of that's changed is applying Windows Updates.

  • Lenvo B450 won't boot on battery only?

    We bought a Lenovo B450 laptop almost a year ago. It comes with a NVIDIA GEFORCE with CUDA graphics and so the battery life is terrible. It will only last 1:30 hours max. We try to run it on battery as much as possible but because the battery life is short sometimes we can't notice that the battery is so low until the computer blacks out. Because of the short battery life, the laptop is always plugged on AC power. One night the computer froze. Because it was already late, I just reset the laptop my pressing the power button for 10 seconds. The laptop shut off but I did not bother restarting it. The next morning, the laptop won't turn on on battery only. It will only turn on on AC power. The computer instantly shuts down(improperly) once the adapter is removed. But the battery was at 100% then. Now it is slowly losing charge (currently at 74%). The battery indicator says, "Plugged in, not charging". I want to bring the laptop to school but I can't because it won't be portable at all. Just to summarize it all: 1) The laptop suffered some blackouts already. 2) The laptop was on AC power most of the time. 3) When the computer froze, it was reset (hard shutdown). 4) The laptop won't boot with battery only since then. 5) The laptop will shutdown instantly when AC adapter is removed. 6) The battery won't charge and is gradually losing charge. ======================= UPDATE ============================= We got the battery replaced. Unfortunately, it delivers only 2 hours max of power.

  • It seems Windows 8.1 killed my two T60 laptop batteries

    Upgraded Windows 7 to Win8 earlier this year, and last week upgraded to Windows 8.1. (Lenovo T60) Had no problem with battery usage when on Win7 nor Win8. After about a week of Win8.1 on my system, the battery stop working, while the system was on. The orange batt. indicator just keeps flashing. The system does not charge the battery (even though I know there was life in it). I installed a known good fully charged battery from another T60, it worked for aboute 40 mins then it instantly died in fron of my eyes. The system now shows the same orange flashing batt. light, but it is not charging. I know both these batteries are still good, they just appear to be dead. My research suggest that the new Win8.1 may not have updated the battery driver to Win8. I have since done that. Same problem. Research i s also pointing me to some 'smart chip' on the batteries that need to a reset. Is this possible ?? Does anyone know a process to reset the 'smart chip' on these batteries (fru# 92P1139) ????

  • Using smartctl to get vendor specific Attributes from ssd drive behind a SmartArray P410 controller

    Recently I have deployed some HP server with SSD's behind a SmartArray P410 controller. While not official supported from HP the server work well sofar. Now I like to get wear level info's, error statistics etc from the drive. While the SA P410 supports a passthru of the SMART Command to a single drive in the array the output I was not able to the the interesting things from the drive.   • Kernel hacking methodology - how to find out where to hack the linux kernel

    I have a throw-away cheap laptop I'd like to twiddle around, a Thinkpad SL 500. What bothers me are two leds, the one for wireless connectivity, and the one for hibernation, which don't light up at all, although they're functional, I've tried it on windows. So I would like to write a kernel driver for them, nothing big, it just looks like a good idea to play around with the kernel. My question is what methodology should I follow systematically to find out what devices are responsible for those leds (in general, not necessarily specific to my hardware), and what drivers are responsible for the other two leds that work, bluetooth and the battery indicator? And when I say methodology, I really mean the methodology, step by step, with reasons for each step, like in the answer I've gave to someone else over here: What does && mean in void *p = &&abc; I am profficient at fgrepping through big code repositories, using static code analysers & co, but I think my lack of hardware knowledge hinders me on this problem. PS: I'm using ArchLinux, so almost the latest kernel version.
