• How can I share a Windows 7 library with anonymous access without using a Homegroup?

  The "homegroup" feature is useless, because it requires a password, and therefore doesn't support anonymous, no-hassle access to shares from devices such as my Sony Bravia TV and non-Windows7 machines. So I turned off homegroup and reverted to the standard shared folders protocol. I'd like to share my Music "Library", so I can play files from my TV through the Surround Sound System, but there seems to be no option to share a library folder other than through a homegroup. I don't want to have to individually share the folders that belong to the library, because that would defeat the purposes of the library, which is to manage which folders are included in the library while also providing an easily accessible view of them all at once. Does anyone know how to share a Windows 7 library without that useless homegroup feature?

• Can't delete a directory on external drive (OS X)

  I have a brand new Transcend StoreJet 25M3 (external HDD) mounted to MacBook (Leopard 10.5.8) at /Volumes/Transcend. I copied some data from my old Windows (XP) machine on it, and now, after cleaning some stuff up, I wanted to delete some directories, but this is what happened: $ rmdir My\ Pictures/ rmdir: My Pictures/: Operation not permitted Using Finder just asks for password, but does not delete the directory (sound of "moved to Trash" is played). I thought it's some permission "thing", but: $ ls -l drwxrwxrwx 1 martin staff 32768 5 jan 16:11 My Pictures/ $ sudo rm -rf My\ Pictures rm: My Pictures: Operation not permitted I re-mounted, rebooted (thinking that there's some file lock), but that did not help. What might have happened here? How to delete it?

• Xerox Workcentre 3119 and Linux

  I'm trying to get Xerox Workcentre 3119 printer to work on Linux. It's a multifunction device (printer and scanner). I run the CUPS web interface at: http://localhost:631/ and it recognizes it on USB port and even suggests Gutenprint driver from the list. When I try to print a test page, the printer goes through "warming up" process (i.e. lights blink and sound is heard) but does not print anything. There are no errors in /var/log/cups/error_log and access_log shows as if everything is ok. The printer works fine in Windows XP. Does anyone have any experience with this printer on Linux?

• HDMI audio disappears when the TV is turned off and on

  I have a new HTPC build (it's running Windows 7 Ultimate x64) and it has a ATI Radeon 6450 as graphics card. When I boot the PC, everything works fine. However, when the TV is turned off and then back on I notice there's no sound anymore. There are lots of other people who have this issue aswell. I've found this workaround however it doesn't seem to work for me. I have the newest drivers (12.4). Someone said it was fixed in 9.1 but I still have the issue. Any help is appreciated.

• Opening Office 2007 files using a Vista or Win7 client on a server 2008 file share causes lockups an

  I think this mostly happens when trying to open files opened by other users. In the XP/2003 days you would get some kind of warning about a locked/read only file. With 7/Vista/2008 I'm just seeing clients hang (Word just sits there) and if I go into the file share and attempt to right-click on the file, explorer hangs for several minutes. I tried disabling AV on the file server as well as locally. No luck. I've read that SMB2.0 might be the culprit here, but even testing that solution means disabling it on both the client and server, and requires a server reboot. Does this sound like an SMB2 issue? The server is 2008 SP1. The clients are Win7 vanilla and Vista SP2 with all the current updates. Office 2007 SP2 with all updates. Thanks.

• Mouse settings/properties dialog box won't open in Windows 7

  Hi, I have a problem trying to open my computer's mouse settings by either going to the command prompt and typing, 'control mouse', 'main.cpl' (as researched online) or simply by trying to go to the Control Panel and clicking on 'Mouse' under Hardware and Sound section. I have also tried running cmd as Administrator and trying the above commands but that is of no help. Lastly, if I search for 'mouse' and click 'Mouse' from the Windows search bar, that doesn't work either. In the past I had bought and installed Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 6000 software and have just now bought and installed HP's Wireless Comfort Mobile mouse. Any help in this regard is highly recommended. I won't be able to restore or reinstall my laptop since it's a heavy use machine. Thanks! Yasser

  Welcome, I trouble with my laptop fujitsu siemens model V6535. My siemens work under Windows 7, and from upgrade time (vista to 7) notice something what make me really angry. When my siemens go to standby mode (when i don't use it for some time), power diode change to red and start blinking (standbay mode). When i push power button (wake up it), blinking diode change to green but nothing else happend (nothing on display, no sound of HDD). When i press power button few second and try turn it on again... it wont display anything... i have unplug charger and then shutdown and power on again without power cable. Then he start working... Few days ago i done upgrade bios to nevest version... but it don't help... Anyone have idea what can be wrong ?

• USB driver problems (Windows 8.1)

  Every time I turn on my laptop the USB ports don't work and the drivers have an error. In order to fix this I'm forced to start the Device Manager, uninstall all the USB drivers, open the Control Panel, click Find and fix problems (under System and Security), click Configure a device (under Hardware and Sound) and then when that window pops up just hit Next until I can see my USB drivers reinstalled and working in the Device Manager window under Universal Serial Bus controllers. I found this way to fix it but I would like a permanent solution so that I don't have to do this every time I turn on the machine. Any ideas? When I bought the machine it had Window 7 installed but I later upgraded it to Windows 8.0 and then 8.1 after that.

  Hi. Maybe someone can help me with this strange thing: If a user clicks on a button, a new UITableView is pushed to the navigation controller. This new view is doing some database querying which takes some time. Therefore I wanted to do the loading in background. • Jquery Using Jeditable and activating on click

  I found this to be almost exactly what I'm trying to do. I'm using Jeditable I can get the default setup to work. I've also been able to get the code in the forum above to work. I believe my problem is that because I'm using a table I need to so something else to select the previous element. • What should we be aware of when moving windows servers to another domain

  Hi everyone, We have a bunch of (virtual vmware) windows servers (2003 and 2008) that our hosting provider wants to move to a new domain. They also want to rename the servers. The hosting provider is in charge of maintaining the servers, while we are in charge of making sure that all our business applications are working. Our business applications include custom developed .net applications using such things as SQLServer 2008, TFS 2010, asp.net, some legacy COM+ apps, etc. To be honest I don't feel too convinced that this migration will be as painless as the hosting provider wants to make it sound. I would greatly appreciate any input on what we should be aware of when discussing the practicalities involved in the migration with the hosting provider. Thanks in advance. Klaus

• Keyboard not detected when trying to install Ubuntu 10.10

  I tried to install Ubuntu 10.10 desktop edition on my laptop and unfortunately it didn't detect my keyboard (it detects my mouse) so I couldn't finish installation. Is it something wrong I'm doing? There isn't really much to specify during the installation process and I'm really disappointed that such a trivial task as installation cannot be done without asking a question on a forum. Maybe it's because I'm trying to install it on my laptop? Shall I the download the notebook edition? That sound silly to me.

• Trying to Use LoadMoreElement in Monotouch.Dialog

  I am using Monotouch to write an Ipad app. The app uses tables to browse down through a directory tree and then select a file. I have used Monotouch.Dialog to browse the directories and I set up the directory tables as the app starts.However there are too many files to set up in a table as the app starts and so I want to set up the 'file table' as the file is selected from the lowest level directory table. I am trying to use LoadMoreElement to do this but I cannot make it work or find any examples online. • nVidia Control Panel Won't Recognize SLI

  So yesterday I bought a brand new, 1,000W PSU to replace my 650W one and to allow for SLI. I install it and my second card (both are GTX 560 ti cards). I reinstalled my drivers and my system recognizes both cards. The control panel says "GTX 560 ti x2", I can select between them for Physx, sound output, picture output (although I only have one hooked up to my monitor), etc. But the kicker is I can't turn on SLI. Everything I've read says I'll get a balloon notification saying I can use SLI and the control panel will have a new section, etc, but none of those things happens. Anyone have any ideas? System: Win7 Professional x64 2x GTX 560 ti 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5 1,000W Xion PSU 8GB RAM (Can't think of my motherboard right now) Note: My PSU and MOBO both say they're SLI certified and I'm using an SLI bridge. The site is also an office, so it includes windows dc, windows ad, exchange, sql, file sharing, development app servers and other pcs. In addition to office (internal) things, there are both test and prod environments consisting of a web server-app server-sql stack. There is also ftp service open to public. I consider: dmz1 - web server - exchange edge - ftp dmz2 - app server - sql for app server internal - dc and ad - exchange hub and transport - internal file sharing - sql for internal use - app servers for internal use - pcs public - dmz1, only web, ftp and smtp public - dmz2 not possible public - internal not possible dmz1 - dmz2 is possible from web servers to app servers by using http or ajp dmz1 - internal is only possible for exchange, otherwise not possible dmz2 - internal not possible Does this sound ok ? Any other recommendations ? It will be configured using either MS ISA or Jupiter SSG. Thank you.

• My saved drafts become unread email in Windows Live Mail and Gmail IMAP

  I have setup windows live mail with my gmail account in IMAP mode. When I draft an email and save it. It saves in the drafts automatically. Within a minute, my WLM sound alerts new mail and shows mail icon in the system tray. However, this is for the draft I have saved which appears unread. To make the mail notification icon go away in the system tray, I go off and mark the draft as read. This repetition is tedious and distracting. How can I avoid this annoyance? thanks

• Modify .htm files on wireless router

  What am I trying to do? I am attempting to access the .htm files on my wireless router to modify the look and feel of the Netgear GENIE webpage(s). What have I done? I've read several articles on eHow and Instructables that detail how to setup your router as an FTP server, since I figured the best way to access the files would be through FileZilla. Setting up an FTP server through my router doesn't sound like what I should do to accomplish my task... or perhaps it is? I've also read the documents provided by Netgear for getting started and setting up functionality on the router. Maybe I overlooked something? • Format Factory not working for mov files

  I have attempted multiple destination formats with no success. I am using Format Factor 2.30. I drag and drop a .mov file into FF, select all to mpg (or any format) then click Start. It thinks for a couple seconds and then jumps to 100%. When I open the file I get no sound or picture from the video. These mov files were created with a Canon SX10 camera. (It is my brother's camera so I'm not sure of the model.) Any suggestions? TMPGEnc is able to convert the files with the QTReader plug in so the video isn't corrupted or something. Thanks. Jeff

• Movie colors are off on ubuntu using Movieplayer?

  I've been playing with a new SLR that also happens to record movies. When I try to view a movie using Movie Player, it plays fine, and the sound is there, but the colors are off - green grass is purple, and my golden retriever is a blue retriever. VLC reports that the file is broken, offers to repair it, and plays it with the same problem. The same file plays fine under WinXP with both Media Player and Quicktime, and with no problems under MacOS also with Quicktime. What's the problem, and how can I fix it?

  I am building a webcam w/ HTTP server that will be running from a low-bandwith connection. The content on the site will be changing every 5 to 10 minutes. Instead of serving files directly from this connection, are there hosting companies that can act as a public proxy for my site? Therefore, if nobody is using the site, the local internet connection remains idle. And if I receive 1000 hits all at the same time, only one HTTP GET is required, and the hosting company (on a fat pipe) continues serving the other 999 requests? This doesn't sound like a very common usage model, but I feel like this would be the optimal solution to my situation.

• KVM Virtual guest Paused on Reboot

  I'm running REHL 6 and just installed a Ubuntu Server Guest via KVM set to start at boot. This works correctly and the guest loads, but it loads "paused" and requires that I manually un-pause it. Can someone give me a hint as to how I can I get the Guest OS to actually become active on boot?   When you take the system drive and put it in a new box, do you rename it or do you keep the name? And when you put a fresh drive in the old box, do you give it a new name? What is with upgrading? How many of the components do you have to change until a computer loses its identity? So a CPU is often described as the heart or the brain of a computer but where lies its soul? What determines its identity? The data on the system drive? The majority of its components? This might sound like a not-so-serious question and it probably is but whom of you didn't already face this problem?
