• confused about python decorators

  I have a class that has an output() method which returns a matplotlib Figure instance. I have a decorator I wrote that takes that fig instance and turns it into a Django response object. My decorator looks like this: class plot_svg(object): def __init__(self, view): self.view = view def __call__(self, *args, **kwargs): print args, kwargs fig = self.view(*args, **kwargs) canvas=FigureCanvas(fig) response=HttpResponse(content_type='image/svg+xml') canvas.print_svg(response) return response and this is how it was being used: def as_avg(self): return plot_svg(self.output)() The only reason I has it that way instead of using the "@" syntax is because when I do it with the "@": @plot_svg def as_svg(self): return self.output() I get this error: as_svg() takes exactly 1 argument (0 given) I'm trying to 'fix' this by putting it in the "@" syntax but I can't figure out how to get it working. I'm thinking it has something to do with self not getting passed where it's supposed to...

• A PHP design pattern for the model part [PHP Zend Framework]

  I have a PHP MVC application using Zend Framework. As presented in the quickstart, I use 3 layers for the model part : Model (business logic) Data mapper Table data gateway (or data access object, i.e. one class per SQL table) The model is UML designed and totally independent of the DB. My problem is : I can't have multiple instances of the same "instance/record". For example : if I get, for example, the user "Chuck Norris" with id=5, this will create a new model instance wich members will be filled by the data mapper (the data mapper query the table data gateway that query the DB). Then, if I change the name to "Duck Norras", don't save it in DB right away, and re-load the same user in another variable, I have "synchronisation" problems... (different instances for the same "record") Right now, I use the Multiton pattern : like Singleton, but multiple instances indexed by a key (wich is the user ID in our example). But this is complicating my developpement a lot, and my testings too. How to do it right ?

• HP to Cisco spanning tree root flapping

  Per a recent question I recently configured both my HP (2x 2900) and Cisco (1x 3750) hardware to use MSTP for interoperability. I thought this was functional until I applied the change to the third device (HP switch 1 below) at which time the spanning tree root started flapping causing performance issues (5% packet loss) between my two HP switches. I'm not sure why. HP Switch 1 A4 connected to Cisco 1/0/1. HP Switch 2 B2 connected to Cisco 2/0/1. HP Switch 1 A2 connected to HP Switch 2 A1. I'd prefer the Cisco stack to act as the root. EDIT: There is one specific line - 'spanning-tree 1 path-cost 500000' in the HP switch 2 that I didn't add and was preexisting. I'm not sure if it could have the kind of impact that I'm describing. I'm more a security and monitoring guy then networking. EDIT 2: I'm starting to believe the problem lies in the fact that the value for my MST 0 instance on the Cisco is still at the default 32768. I worked up a diagram: This is based on every show command I could find for STP. I'll make this change after hours and see if it helps. • SynchronizationContext and Bookmarks in WF4

  I am running workflows under asp.net and using SynchronizationContext to make the page "wait" for the workflow. Here is how I run the workflow instance under asp.net: var workflowApplication = new WorkflowApplication(activity); SynchronizationContext syncContext = SynchronizationContext.Current; workflowApplication.Completed = delegate { syncContext.OperationCompleted(); }; workflowApplication.SynchronizationContext = syncContext; syncContext.OperationStarted(); workflowApplication.Run(); In one of the activities I use a bookmark. Now I want the page processing to continue whenever I call CreateBookmark. I tried calling SynchronizationContext.Current.OperationCompleted() before setting the bookmark but that crushes asp.net site when the workflow resumes and completes (I think the workflow instance calls OperationCompleted again when it completes and the error raises) How can I work with bookmarks under Asp.Net, any ideas?

• Efficiency of Java "Double Brace Initialization"?

  In Hidden Features of Java the top answer mentions Double Brace Initialization, with a very enticing syntax: Set<String> flavors = new HashSet<String>() {{ add("vanilla"); add("strawberry"); add("chocolate"); add("butter pecan"); }}; This idiom creates an anonymous inner class with just an instance initializer in it, which "can use any [...] methods in the containing scope". Main question: Is this as inefficient as it sounds? Should its use be limited to one-off initializations? (And of course showing off!) Second question: The new HashSet must be the "this" used in the instance initializer ... can anyone shed light on the mechanism? Third question: Is this idiom too obscure to use in production code? Summary: Very, very nice answers, thanks everyone. On question (3), people felt the syntax should be clear (though I'd recommend an occasional comment, especially if your code will pass on to developers who may not be familiar with it). On question (1), The generated code should run quickly. The extra .class files do cause jar file clutter, and slow program startup slightly (thanks to coobird for measuring that). Thilo pointed out that garbage collection can be affected, and the memory cost for the extra loaded classes may be a factor in some cases. Question (2) turned out to be most interesting to me. If I understand the answers, what's happening in DBI is that the anonymous inner class extends the class of the object being constructed by the new operator, and hence has a "this" value referencing the instance being constructed. Very neat. Overall, DBI strikes me as something of an intellectual curiousity. Coobird and others point out you can achieve the same effect with Arrays.asList, varargs methods, Google Collections, and the proposed Java 7 Collection literals. Newer JVM languages like Scala, JRuby, and Groovy also offer concise notations for list construction, and interoperate well with Java. Given that DBI clutters up the classpath, slows down class loading a bit, and makes the code a tad more obscure, I'd probably shy away from it. However, I plan to spring this on a friend who's just gotten his SCJP and loves good natured jousts about Java semantics! ;-) Thanks everyone!

  Hi, i have a validation class which needs improving. If I require some custom validation I need to specify a custom function. It works a bit like this: The controller tells the validation that a custom validation function is required. The controller runs the validation. --- Gets iffy here --- Validation class creates a new instance of the controller class.... Validation class runs controller-custom_validation_function() Validation class returns true / false Is there someway that I can alter this to do something like this? $validation = new validation; // Insert rules here. $validation-function() = $this-function(); By doing this I could get rid of the step of creating an unneeded class instance.

• When to use UserControl vs. Control in Silverlight?

  I'm just getting my feet wet in Silverlight, and don't really understand the differences and pros/cons of creating a UserControl vs. creating a Control for the same task (as in when you right click on a selection in Expression Blend, for instance). It seems like selecting "Make Into Control" just creates a new template for the base type you specify, whereas creating a UserControl creates a whole new base class. Is that correct? In this particular instance, I'm creating a custom text box control that only takes numbers, and divides itself into 3 sections, storing 3 values into separate properties as pictured below. In this particular case, which would be best? Update (Additional Question): Why can't I use Template Binding with a UserControl, but I can with a Control? That's one reason I thought that making a UserControl might not be the right decision.

• pyinstaller: 2 instances of my cherrypy app exe get executed.

  I have a cherrypy app that I've made an exe with pyinstaller. now when I run the exe it loads itself twice into memory. Watching the taskmanager shows the first instance load into about 1k, then a second later a second instance of hte exe loads into about 3k ram. If I close the bigger one both processes die. If I close hte smaller one only that one dies. Loading the exe with subprocess, if I try to proc.kill(), it only kills the small one leaving the other running in memory. Is this a sideeffect of using cherrypy and pyinstaller together?

• Global Entity Framework Context in WPF Application

  Good day, I am in the middle of development of a WPF application that is using Entity Framework (.NET 3.5). It accesses the entities in several places throughout. I am worried about consistency throughout the application in regard to the entities. Should I be instancing separate contexts in my different views, or should I (and is a a good way to do this) instance a single context that can be accessed globally? For instance, my entity model has three sections, Shipments (with child packages and further child contents), Companies/Contacts (with child addresses and telephones), and disk specs. The Shipments and EditShipment views access the DiskSpecs, and the OptionsView manages the DiskSpecs (Create, Edit, Delete). If I edit a DiskSpec, I have to have something in the ShipmentsView to retrieve the latest specs if I have separate contexts right? If it is safe to have one overall context from which the rest of the app retrieves it's objects, then I imagine that is the way to go. If so, where would that instance be put? I am using VB.NET, but I can translate from C# pretty good. Any help would be appreciated. I just don't want one of those applications where the user has to hit reload a dozen times in different parts of the app to get the new data. Update: OK so I have changed my app as follows: All contexts are created in Using Blocks to dispose of them after they are no longer needed. When loaded, all entities are detatched from context before it is disposed. A new property in the MainViewModel (ContextUpdated) raises an event that all of the other ViewModels subscribe to which runs that ViewModels RefreshEntities method. After implementing this, I started getting errors saying that an entity can only be referenced by one ChangeTracker at a time. Since I could not figure out which context was still referencing the entity (shouldn't be any context right?) I cast the object as IEntityWithChangeTracker, and set SetChangeTracker to nothing (Null). This has let to the current problem: When I Null the changeTracker on the Entity, and then attach it to a context, it loses it's changed state and does not get updated to the database. However if I do not null the change tracker, I can't attach. I have my own change tracking code, so that is not a problem. My new question is, how are you supposed to do this. A good example Entity query and entity save code snipped would go a long way, cause I am beating my head in trying to get what I once thought was a simple transaction to work. Any help would elevate you to near god-hood.

  For the last two days, i tried my best to learn something about StructureMap, using an old project of mine as an concrete implementation example. I tried to simplify my question as much as possible. While i will post my examples in vb.net, answers with examples in C# are also okay. The project includes an interfaces called IDatabase which connects itself to a Database. The important part looks like this. Implementation ...] End Function [... more implementations...] End Class ConnectionSettings is a structure that has all the information needed to connect to a Database. I want to open the Database Connection once and use it for every single connection in the project, so i register a instance in the ObjectFactory. dim foo = ObjectFactory.GetInstance(Of MSSQLConnection)() dim bar as ConnectionSettings foo.connect(bar) ObjectFactory.Configure(Sub(x) x.For(Of IDatabase).Use(foo)) Up until this part, everything works like a charm. Now, i get to a point where i hav e classes that need an additional instance of IDatabase because they connect to a second database. Public Class ExampleClass Public Sub New(ByVal SameOldDatabase as IDatabase, ByVal NewDatabase as IDatabase) [...] Magic happens here [...] End Sub End Class I want this second IDatabase to behave much like the first one. I want it to use a concrete, single instance and want to connect it to a different database invoking Connect with a different ConnectionSettings. The problem is: While i'm pretty sure it's somewhow possible, (my initial idea was registering ExampleClass with alternative constructor arguments), i actually want to do it without registering ExampleClass. This probably involves more configuration, but i have no idea how to do it. So, basically, it comes down to this question: How do i configurate the ObjectFactory in a way that the autowiring always invokes the constructor with object Database1 for the first IDatabase parameter and object Database2 for the second one (if there is one?)

And the argument still rages. I see Singletons as a Design Pattern (good and bad). The problem with Singleton is not the Pattern but rather the users (sorry everybody). Everybody and their father thinks they can implement one correctly (and from the many interviews I have done, most people can't). Also because everybody thinks they can implement a correct Singleton they abuse the Pattern and use it in situations that are not appropriate (replacing global variables with Singletons!). So the main questions that need to be answered are: When should you use a Singleton How do you implement a Singleton correctly My hope for this article is that we can collect together in a single place (rather than having to google and search multiple sites) an authoritative source of when (and then how) to use a Singleton correctly. Also appropriate would be a list of Anti-Usages and common bad implementations explaining why they fail to work and for good implementations their weaknesses. So get the ball rolling: I will hold my hand up and say this is what I use but probably has problems.   i used to create an instance of a singleton class like this: $Singleton = SingletonClassName::GetInstance(); and for non singleton class: $NonSingleton = new NonSingletonClassName; i think we should not differentiate how we create an instance of a class whether this is a singleton or not. if i look in perception of other class, i don't care whether the class we need a singleton class or not. so, i still not comfortable with how php treat a singleton class. i think and i always want to write: $Singleton = new SingletonClassName; just another non singleton class, is there a solution to this problem ?

• Container Options in AWS Elastic Beanstalk

  We have deployed a java webapplication in Elastic Beanstalk with the minimum instance count 1 and max instance count 2 for Autoscaling. The custom AMI we are using is c1.medium with Sun JDK 6. The environment status changed to yellow and then red. After checking into the log file from the snapshot logs we found a exception - Caused by: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space. Assuming this could be one of the possible reason for the Environment failure. Maximum JVM Permanent Generation Size (MB) - 512m Should i increase the Heap size from 512m to more or is it fine.

• Authenticating a single request with httpclient 4.x

  I have an HttpClient instance that's shared by a number of threads. I would like to use it to make a single authenticated request. Because only the single request should be authenticated, I don't want to modify the HttpClient instance as described in the documentation. Here's what I've worked out instead, which isn't working. From what I can tell, it doesn't look like the CredentialsProvider is being used at all. Any tips? • AppleScript to open URL in Safari crashes for Flash-based websites

  I'm trying to open a URL in Safari. It works fine for websites without Flash embedded, but crashes Safari for Flash sites. Example (this WORKS): tell application "Safari" to open location "http://google.com" This CRASHES when Safari is not already running: tell application "Safari" to open location "http://grooveshark.com" Two things I noticed: Safari only crashes for websites with embedded Flash The script above only crashes if a new instance of Safari is created (i.e. Safari was not running before) From the second observation I assume that it could be a permission issue of some sort. Maybe the Safari instance launched from the AppleScript has a problem loading plugins?

  Here is my simplified model: class Item(models.Model): pass class TrackingPoint(models.Model): item = models.ForeignKey(Item) created = models.DateField() data = models.IntegerField() In many parts of my application I need to retrieve a set of Item's and annotate each item with data field from latest TrackingPoint from each item ordered by created field. For example, instance i1 of class Item has 3 TrackingPoint's: tp1 = TrackingPoint(item=i1, created=date(2010,5,15), data=23) tp2 = TrackingPoint(item=i1, created=date(2010,5,14), data=21) tp3 = TrackingPoint(item=i1, created=date(2010,5,12), data=120) I need a query to retrieve i1 instance annotated with tp1.data field value as tp1 is the latest tracking point ordered by created field. That query should also return Item's that don't have any TrackingPoint's at all. If possible I prefer not to use QuerySet's extra method to do this. That's what I tried so far... and failed :( Item.objects.annotate(max_created=Max('trackingpoint__created'), data=Avg('trackingpoint__data')).filter(trackingpoint__created=F('max_created')) Any ideas?

  I'm overlaying the mapview and using RegexKitLite. I couldn't make it work. I've downloaded .m and .h files and added to the project. Also I tried, adding libicucore.dylib or libicucore.A.dlib or adding -licucore to other compiler flags field.   Let's say I have a Model, for example User, and I want to merge two instances of this Model, say merge User2 into User1. Explicitly this is what I mean: If a field is already filled in User1, it should remain the same If a field is missing in User1 but is present in User2, it should be copied If SomeModel BelongsTo User, every instance of SomeModel pointing to User2 should be modified to point to User1 Same if SomeModel HasAndBelongsToMany User If SomeModel HasMany User, and SomeModel1 Has User2 but no other instance Has User1, it should be modified so that SomeModel1 has User1 instead If SomeModel HasMany User, SomeModel1 Has User1 and SomeModel2 Has User2... well, I'm not sure here, I guess the only solution is to discard SomeModel2, since User1 can BelongTo only one SomeModel. Finally User2 should be removed. Is there a way to automate this? Maybe a Behaviour? If not, I may consider creating it, since I will need it a lot.
