  • Can I use foreign key restrictions to return meaningful UI errors with PHP

    I want to start by saying that I am a big fan of using foreign keys and have a tendency to use them even on small projects to keep my database from being filled with orphaned data. On larger projects I end up with gobs of keys which end up covering upwards of 8 - 10 layers of data. I want to know if anyone could suggest a graceful way of handling 'expected errors' from the MySQL database in a way that I can construct meaningful messages for the end user. I will explain 'expected errors' with an example. Lets say I have a set of tables used for basic discussions: discussion questions responses users Hierarchically they would probably look something like this: -users --discussion ---questions ----responses When I attempt to delete a user the FKs will check discussions and if any discussion exist the deletion is restricted, deleting discussion checks questions, deleting questions checks responses. An 'expected error' in this case would be attempting to delete a user--unless they are newly created I can anticipate that one or more foreign keys will fail causing an error. What I WANT to do is to catch that error on deletion and be able to tell the end user something like 'We're sorry, but all discussions must be removed before you can delete this user...'. Now I know I can keep and maintain matching arrays in PHP and map specific errors to messages but that is messy and prone to becoming stagnant, or I could manually run a set of selects prior to attempting the deletion, but then I am doing just as much work as without using FKs. Any help here would be greatly appreciated, or if I am just looking at this completely wrong then please let me know. On a side note I generally use CodeIgniter for my application development, so if that would open up an avenue through that framework please consider that in your answers. Thanks in Advance

Where can I learn more about making flashy, superficially useful but deepdown useless fancy graphics UIs like that? It's almost in the realm of "hollywood special effects" -- like fire/smoke/fire, but I don't want natural phenomenon; I want user interfaces. Concrete question: where can I learn about creating flashy, cool looking (though not necessairly useful) user interfaces? [Perferably in OpenGL]

  • Core Data and BOOL setup

    I am working on an app that uses Core Data as its backend for managing SQLite records. I have everything working with strings and numbers, but have just tried adding BOOL fields and can't seem to get things to work. In the .xcdatamodel, I have added a field to my object called isCurrentlyForSale which is not Optional, not Transient, and not Indexed. The attribute's type is set to Boolean with default value NO. When I created the class files from the data model, the boilerplate code added for this property in the .h header was: @property (nonatomic, retain) NSNumber * isCurrentlyForSale; along with the @dynamic isCurrentlyForSale; in the .m implementation file. I've always worked with booleans as simple BOOLs. I've read that I could use NSNumber's numberWithBool and boolValue methods, but this seems like an aweful lot of extra code for something so simple. Can the @property in the header be changed to a simple BOOL? If so is there anything to watch out for? Thanks -John

  • Testing if a UI element is hidden in an OCUnit test

    I have a button that is hidden under certain circumstances that I wish to test. The button is hidden with [theButton setHidden: YES] in the viewDidLoad method if it is appropriate. For simplicity, lets say that the button is hidden when the buttonIsHidden property is set to true in the view controller. Right now I am trying the following: self.viewController = [[ViewController alloc] init]; self.viewController.buttonIsHidden = YES; [self.viewController loadView]; UIButton *theButton = [...] // function I wrote to retrieve the button based on it's touch up inside action if (theButton) { NSLog(@"%c", theButton.hidden); return (theButton.hidden == true) } return NO; It looks like the hidden property is not what it should be, the NSLog lines from the above code are blank. But, if I output another property like the height, it outputs the correct value so I know it is getting the right button. How do I access the hidden property of the button in this case?

    I did find an answer to this title and I did do a little research but I'm still not getting the flow. Here is what I want to happen: 1) click a button on the presenter view to open a modal view. 2) retrieve some value and click a button to close the modal view....sending the value to the presentor view and execute a method. I get that this works like a callback but I still can't figure out where to put the callback stuff. So, how exactly do I do this? A) In the presentViewController completion block, should I include the presenter view method to execute when modal view is completed? Or: B) In the modal view's dismissViewControllerAnimated completion block, should I include the presenter view method to execute when modal view is completed? Can somebody help me with some sample code? Or at least help me get the flow of which block to put the code in? Thank you, P

    For a PDF reader I want to prepare a document by taking 'screenshots' of each page and save them to disc. CGContextDrawPDFPage(context, page); ... UIImage *resultingImage = UIGraphicsGetImageFromCurrentImageContext(); ...//saving the image to disc [pool drain]; } CGPDFDocumentRelease(document); This results in a lot of memory which seems not to be released after the first run of the loop (preparing the 1st document), but no more unreleased memory in additional runs: MEMORY BEFORE: 6 MB MEMORY DURING 1ST DOC: 40 MB MEMORY AFTER 1ST DOC: 25 MB MEMORY DURING 2ND DOC: 40 MB MEMORY AFTER 2ND DOC: 25 MB .... Changing the code to for (int i = 1; i<=pageCount; i++) { CGPDFDocumentRef document = CGPDFDocumentCreateWithURL((CFURLRef) someURL); NSAutoreleasePool *pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc]init]; CGPDFPageRef page = CGPDFDocumentGetPage(document, i); ...//getting + manipulating graphics context etc. ... CGContextDrawPDFPage(context, page); ... UIImage *resultingImage = UIGraphicsGetImageFromCurrentImageContext(); ...//saving the image to disc CGPDFDocumentRelease(document); [pool drain]; } changes the memory usage to MEMORY BEFORE: 6 MB MEMORY DURING 1ST DOC: 9 MB MEMORY AFTER 1ST DOC: 7 MB MEMORY DURING 2ND DOC: 9 MB MEMORY AFTER 2ND DOC: 7 MB .... but is obviously a step backwards in performance. When I start reading a PDF (later in time, different thread) in the first case no more memory is allocated (staying at 25 MB), while in the second case memory goes up to 20 MB (from 7). In both cases, when I remove the CGContextDrawPDFPage(context, page); line memory is (nearly) constant at 6 MB during and after all preparations of documents. Can anybody explain whats going on there?

  • "didChangeSection:" NSfetchedResultsController delegate method not being called

    I have a standard split view controller, with a detail view and a table view. Pressing a button in the detail view can cause the an object to change its placement in the table view's ordering. This works fine, as long as the resulting ordering change doesn't result in a section being added or removed. I.e. an object can change it's ordering in a section or switch from one section to another. Those ordering changes work correctly without problems. But, if the object tries to move to a section that doesn't exist yet, or is the last object to leave a section (therefore requiring the section its leaving to be removed), then the application crashes. NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegate has methods to handle sections being added and removed that should be called in those cases. But those delegate methods aren't being called for some reason. Based on the Apple's NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegate documentation "didChangeSection" should have been called before "didChangeObject", which would have prevented the exception causing the crash. So I guess the question is how do I assure that didChangeSection gets called? Thanks in advance for any help!

    I have set the size of the tableView that I show as the popoverController as 4*rowheight. And I am using 12cells in the tableView. Each cell contains an image and a label. I can see all the cells by scrolling. Upto 5th cell its ok. After th2 5th cell, the label and the image that I am using in the first four cells are being repeated for the remaining cells. And If I select the cell, the result is accurately shown. But when I again take the tableView, the image and labels are not accurate even for the first 5 cells. All are changed but the selection is giving the correct result.   • Free/open source code editor UI control for .Net

    I'm looking for a free, syntax-highlighting, possibly autocompleting 'code editor's textbox' style control for use in a Visual Studio winforms or wpf project. It should work with C# and self-defined languages. There are pay-for solutions available - something like http://www.syncfusion.com/products/user-interface-edition/windows-forms/Edit would work fine - but I am looking for something simpler, and don't need to pay for unnecessary functionality. Any ideas?

  • Manually Adjusting UI for Rotation

    In my view I have some number-pad type buttons that I want to manually adjust their X and Y when the view is rotated. I'm having trouble figuring out how to support this. I have added in my ViewDidLoad NSNotificationCenter.DefaultCenter.AddObserver("UIDeviceOrientationDidChangeNotification", DeviceRotated ); And I defined my DeviceRotated but the breakpoint is never hit. I thought this might be because of the Autorotate, so I overrided the ShouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation and set that to false (true didn't work either). I figured there should be some WillRotate (but that's a void return type) or something that would allow me to indicate that I want the View to rotate, and whatever is set to auto adjust I'd like it to do that, but that I would like to be able to manually adjust any other items that I need. If I have to do everything myself, that's fine as well. Any advice would be appreciated, Driss.

I configurate a normal and selected state like this: //custom image UIImage *image = [UIImage imageNamed:@"customIconCreationBG.png"]; UIImage *stretchImage = [image stretchableImageWithLeftCapWidth:0.0 topCapHeight:0.0]; [self setBackgroundImage:stretchImage forState:UIControlStateNormal]; UIImage *imageSelected = [UIImage imageNamed:@"customIconCreationBG_selected.png"]; UIImage *stretchImageSelected = [imageSelected stretchableImageWithLeftCapWidth:0.0 topCapHeight:0.0]; [self setBackgroundImage:stretchImageSelected forState:UIControlStateSelected]; In another class I'm filling an array with custom buttons and i'm adding a button pressed method. It sets the selected state to TRUE -(void)buttnPressed:(id)sender { NSLog(@"button pressed"); [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] postNotificationName:@"unselectBGIcons" object:self]; HorizontalListIcon *pressedIcon = ((HorizontalListIcon *)sender); [pressedIcon setSelected:TRUE]; } The button switches to another background, which is great. Is there a way to animate this change ( fading in? ) because it's a bit hard now. Greets
