• Generating and collaborating on network map diagrams?

  I have to turn out some network topology maps for very large networks. I'd like the format for the maps to be something other people can also edit and contribute to regardless of what software I'm using on my Mac to build them. I don't mind spending money on my end for software, but I can't require that my clients spend any money. I also can't promise my clients are also using OS X -- they could be running Linux or Windows. Is there a best software application on OS X for producing maps that I can share with other, non-OS X, users? Is there a best format for sharing topology maps that I should use when exporting the maps to disk?

• Best server OS for running up-to date software

  I need to configure a server (*nix) that runs our (bespoke) CMS and Applications. In the bast I have defaulted to using Cent OS 5, but I find this difficult to upgrade the software to the versions we require. For example, we need PHP 5.3, but CentOS 5 has 5.2. Updating is fine but breaks something else (normally MySQL support in PHP). Eventually it will get to a situation where I can't upgrade because of missing dependancies and incompatible versions. Error: Missing Dependency: httpd = 2.2.3-43.el5.centos.3 is needed by package httpd-devel-2.2.3-43.el5.centos.3.i386 (updates) Is there a better alternative OS for hassle free updates, I need: Apache 2.2.17 (the development version for apxs) MySQL 5.5.8 PHP 5.3.5

• Smart backup software

  I use a laptop on daily basis. As I have a lot of important data there it would be nice to do backups of some directories every day. Can you recommend a specific application that would take care of it? Maybe there is an app that would instantly commit changes I make in a directory on my laptop to the backup folder? The important thing is that I have some big files (a few GB's) that have some minor changes very often. I'm talking about VirtualBox disk images. It would be nice if the software could handle it smartly. Also notice that I'd like to store it on an external usb HDD, which sometimes isn't plugged in.

• What's a good web-based application for storing your book collection?

  Hi all! I'm looking for a (better if web-based; i.e., something I can install in my home server on my LAN) software to keep track of my books/DVDs/etc. I already know of Readerware offerings, which I find quite interesting, but I'd like something that is Web-based, so I can run it on my MacMini on the living room, and access it from any of the comuputers in the house. I've been googling around, and I've been quite surprised to NOT find any clear option. Alternatively, good "native" software for Windows/MacOSX will be more than welcome. Thanks a lot PS: Given the # of interesting suggestions for Web 2.0, ASP-Hosted type sites, I've clarified the question a bit: I'd prefer some software that I can install and use in my systems, not something "in the cloud" (although I'll check the suggestions out!)

• Looking for simple windows scan (multiple pages) to one pdf application?

  I would like to find some simple scan software for a windows machine that can scan to pdf, but I would like it to do batch or multiple pages into one big pdf. I saw a couple questions on scan to pdf software, but did not see anything talking about scanning to large multiple page pdf's. EDIT: I am surprised there are not more options out there. Do many of the scanners/all in one devices come with included software that perform this function? EDIT 2: I tried Scan2PDF and it locked up on me multiple times in the middle of the scan job and then gave me non-english error messages. Otherwise, I liked how simple the app was, just select number of pages and hit ok. Any other success stories out there?

• OS X software updates download but don't install

  I've got three 10.6 computers that won't install OS X updates. Checking for new software will show about a dozen updates (Security updates, Safari, iPhoto, printers, etc) and if choose install it downloads them. After downloading and then clicking restart the computer sits at the purplish sky desktop with no progress bar, and then after about 3 minutes it goes back to the login window (without ever installing or restarting). If I then select check for updates the same updates will all be presented and I can repeat the process. Manually downloading and installing an update such as 10.6.8 combo updater works as it should, and then check for updates no longer presents that particular update as an option. This seems to be the result of some setting or 3rd party application as I've got 3 out 7 computers experiencing this exact same problem. What could cause this and how can I fix it?

  Let's say a company has a large number of users, and each user has a home area. On each share used for home area folders, I would like to define some rules saying who is supposed to have which permissions on the folder. Then I would like to audit automatically, that this is actually the case and get some sort of report on deviations. So a rule for \MegaServer\Home01 could be defined something like: Domain Admins - Full Control Backup Agent - Read [Home folder owner] - Full Control I am talking about Windows platform and Windows servers, although I think it would most likely also work for *nix machines that expose Windows shares. Does software like this exist? I could roll my own basic version, but if something already exists, that is usually a better option. I am aware of tools to make displaying permissions easier (AccessEnum, DumpSec), but that is not what I am looking for.

• Using TrueCrypt (software encryption) with an SSD

  I use full drive encryption (FDE) w/ TrueCrypt on my laptop. I have a 2nd gen I7 with AES instruction support, so honestly I can't even notice a speed change on the system with it on. My question, is for those who know about SSD's a lot. I previously (early 2011) read articles about how software encryption will negate the speed benefits that an SSD provides - because of the need for the SSD to send a delete command, then a write command, for every encrypted write - instead of just writing over data like a regular HDD would (or something like this...honestly I can't remember...ha!). Anyway, any improvements in this field? Is it pointless for me to grab an SSD if I'm using FDE? Thanks all.

  Hi Is there a proxy software for Windows XP that can support HTTP, HTTPS, SMTP, IMAP, POP, FTP, etc. (the more the better)? We tried apache mod_proxy but FTP doesn't work through it (at least not all features). • How to pull SNMP information from Windows commandline without installing software

  I would like to be able to quickly pull SNMP information via commandline such as device uptime. I noticed Net-SNMP's snmpget.exe can do this; but it looks like I need to install Net-SNMP first before I can use that executable. Isn't there any way to make this executable portable? When I simply copy it to another machine and try to execute it, it complains that netsnmp.dll is missing. If I copy that file to the same folder, it still says the file is missing. I even tried to regsvr32 that dll, but I was unsuccessful. Maybe there's a better way to get simple SNMP information from the Windows command line using royalty free/non-commercial software?   hope this is the right stackexchange site to ask this: We've a group of webpages/services at work (SE Startup), ranging from SVN, trac, continous integration to link collections to a DMS. Nearly everything has an RSS Feed to get the info I need, with the exception of SVN. I'm looking for some kind of software that can integrate these well on a kind of start-page. The most recent changes, upcoming events etc should be clearly visible, as well as an option to search (the search will be provided from a different tool). A news area should be included as well. Currently, I'm pondering doing this with either wordpress or TWiki, although wordpress seems to be the simpler solution in terms of getting something good looking quickly. Authentication should be handled by HTTP-Basic Auth, which we already have in place and working well. I normally would consider Sharepoint a viable option for this, but we're exclusively mac and linux, I won't put up a windows server just for this.

  How would I go about allowing a 'domain user' to install software on their computer. I have active directory and group policy in place. Is there a setting in group policy that would allow this? I don't really want to make the domain users domain admins as well. There is a way to do this by adding the user to their local admins group under computer management. Somehow i can go to some web pages, but i cant login to them, for example www.buzzerbeater.com, i cant access my hotmail/msn, outlook doesnt work either, also www.realgm.com, i cant access the forums too. I have tried with IE7/Firefox/Chrome, but same result. I was using avast free edition that i removed, and i dont have any other security software installed. My laptop from the same network works perfectly. Any ideas?

  Hi everyone. I'm looking for a simple yet effective software to watermark a lot of photos in batch. I have to apply a transparent png watermark image on 400 photos. The program have to place the watermark at a custom position relative to the bottom right corner of every picture. I would have done this in photoshop, but the scriptable action doesn't allow me to do conditionnal placing if the photo is portrait or landscape. I'm looking for a free lightweigh program. • Error code 2503 - Cannot install software on Windows 7 (64Bit)

  A short while ago, I had my hard drive die on me and at the same time my 1Tb backup drive! I took it back to the guy I bought the PC from and although the backup drive could not be recovered, he managed to get my machine working again by making a minor change in the BIOS which then got it out of that continuous loop it found itself in after multiple BSOD episodes. Everything seems to be working fine but yesterday when I tried to save something from Google Chrome, I got and insufficient permission problem and when I try to install software, I get an error of 2503. I have already followed the suggestions here but none of this worked for me. Any suggestions would be appreciated. EDIT: This started happening after I tried running a number of tests to get the machine working, including a previous restore point.

• Can software operation damage an SD card?

  My SD card has a broken boot sector and the tools I've tried say that it's not repairable (I've tried TestDisk, DriveRestore Pro and Easeus Partition Recovery). The card was in my Android phone and at one point, it simply shut down and I had to reboot it. After I rebooted it, the SD card was not recognized and since then I've tried to recover it (I don't want to format the card as it contains some data I'd like not to lose although it's nothing critical). My question is, can some software error in Android, or a sudden crash of a system, damage the SD card? Or was it the other way around, the card first died and it brought the system down?

  I am searching for a software or CMS that manages and displays large online databases, as some kind of frontend to MySQL or any other database. It should be accessible through the browser, be as secure as possible (offering login). The data I'd like to store would be personal information such as name, adress and birthday - also I'd need to be able to add custom fields as well. Also forms and the possibility to download the data in an excel? table would be great. PHPmyadmin is not an option, it should be similar to a CRM but more closely adapted to managing database tables, searching for entries and filtering data. It should be possible to have many user accounts with different rights, with each of them being able to acces certain parts of the data and entering own data. Is there something out there, that might get close to what I imagine? I appreciate any help!

  Do anyone knows any kind of apps or services for "taking care of servers"? (besides managed servers) There are hundreds of ways your server or application can stop working properly. Small things are easy to miss but usually easy to fix. Log overgrouth, configuration issues, etc. Of course there are best practice checklists, but its not a human task to check configuration best practices. Im sure it can be automated: some kind of agent can monitor all system settings, say what is right and wrong and give suggestions on how to make it right. I have to admin several servers and I need some kind of overview of overall situation. As well as a tool, that will fix problems automatically. Can you people suggest something? • recommendations for disk -> usb backup software

  Recently I lost a tape drive and rather than repair the unit I decided that backups to usb external drives would be cheaper. In the past I used NTBackup and figured that the new server 2008 R2 backup wbadmin utility would be able to meet my needs. It does not. I am looking for recommendations for another utility that i can use. My requirements are: -backup local disk in addition to files on a network share -scheduled task integration (or some gui options to manage schedule) -non-incremental backup Basically I could do this all with WBAdmin if it just supported network shares. I saw some links that described attaching a vhd pointed to a network share but I am trying to avoid hacks like that. If i'm going to do all that trouble I'd just as well manually copy the directories over myself. If anyone has any software suggestions that might make this task easier for me let me know please. I am considering BackupAssist but can only find a few reviews here and there for it.

  I maintain a small web site and people can send an email to request information about new events. I would like to automate the process of updating people about new events via email. Is there some easy existing software package to do this? Where I can configure events with a date/description/etc... and have mails get sent automatically? The alternative is to build a MySql database and have some python script in a cron job that does it. I'd like to know if this is a solved problem though. • Virtual Machines and Automatic Software Updates

  It's obvious that one's main computer should always be have all the latest security patches and most people don't blink an eye when Microsoft Update installs non-security updates. In the land of virtual machines, I've run into 2 problems with automatic updates: The virtual machines are only run when needed. Only Windows virtual machines seem to patch themselves. To elaborate on #1, I generally make a virtual machine with a purpose in mind. For example, when I needed an old copy of Internet Explorer to reproduce a bug in RSS Bandit, I had a Virtual PC named RSS Bandit. The machine only stayed running for a few minutes at a time. Consequently, there is no downtime for the machine to download updates at 3 AM. To elaborate on #2, I've noticed that if I haven't run a Windows virtual machine in a while, then the moment I log in, the computer frantically downloads updates and within seconds, if I click the Start button, there is a little orange shield next to the "Shutdown" button. However, I ran a freshly created Ubuntu VM for several hours today with hundreds of updates pending and it seemed to never download any of them or install any of them. Is there any reason to be concerned about running VMs with dozens of security holes? If I should be concerned, then is there any way to get Ubuntu to download and install updates rather than just advertising a long list of updates to download next century? I've already tried telling Ubuntu to automatically download and install updates.
