• Software for making video tutorial

  I'm looking for a good video tutorial software. It shouldn't be very complicated. It should be very easy to zoom in on specific locations on screen, as well as make highlights on screen. I have Camtasia Studio, but can't figure out how to do this. • Fedora Installation with software repository in DVD does not work

  I bought a new assembled PC with processor as Core-i3(2120) and Intel H61 motherboard and was trying to install Fedora 16 from a DVD. This DVD contains all the packages so that installation does not require to download packages from internet. I have used this DVD to install Fedora 16 offline many a times though in machines with different hardware configuration. But in this new machine when the installation reaches the stage wherein it asks for Software repository selection I select CD/DVD but the system fails to read the media and throws up an error that it cannot detect the media. THe LED in the DVD writer also indicate that the DVD is not being read. Now there is neither a problem with the DVD or the DVD drive because the installation started from the DVD itself. So what could the problem be, anything in the BIOS that is causing the problem, Is there any way I could utilize the packages already existing in the CD so that I save downloading the packages from DVD

• Looking for Light Time Management Software Suggestions (for Mac)

  I'm looking for a simple project management app that performs task scheduling, along the line of Merlin or MS Project, but no where near as robustly. I don't need to deal with other (human) resources, but I work on anything from 3 to 6 different projects at a time. What I'd like is to be able to input deadlines and tasks, and have a schedule suggested to complete them. I do technical work, but I don't think I need anything specifically for software development, especially considering I do plenty of other kinds of things, like graphic design and social media PR. I'd really like this to be dead simple, as simple as possible. Suggestions? OmniPlan, something web-based? Definitely cannot afford anything too extravagant, really looking for something under $200.   I was trying to load some modules with EasyApache in a software update (WHM) cause I need to install Magento ecommerce. I did the first EasyApache update. However, one module I needed was not loaded.   I have an older version already installed. I have upraded the package using setup.py install command. But the path is not correctly set. When I type "s3cmd" is shows the older version of software. # s3cmd s3cmd [options] <command> [arg(s)] version 1.2.6 --help -h --verbose -v --dryrun -n # which s3cmd /usr/local/bin/s3cmd The correct version is in different folder and I will like that to be used whenever I type the command. # /usr/bin/s3cmd Consider using --configure parameter to create one. • Crop and Capture screen software/plugin for windows7

  Do you know a software or a plugin for a browser that lets me capture what's on my screen and crop it by ratio. I have a photoshop but I don't want to keep opening it just to capture a simple image and then croping it and then saving it. I want to quickly select a portion on my screen save it. If it's possible it lets me crop by ratio (eg. 4:3). Most that I will capture are in my browser, I use either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. • Advanced file compression software for Mac OSX

  Back when I used Windows, I always used WinRAR for file compression and decompression. It had a fair amount of options like 'just storage' vs 'hard compression', password protection and archive type. Now that I use Mac OSX, the only compression possibility I have is the default Finder's Compress to Zip. I downloaded the most popular decompression software "Unarchiver". But this app can't compress other archive types either. I went for a search but there seem to be hardly any good advanced compression tools that work nice in OSX and have the options WinRAR has. (WinRAR works in OSX but command line only, I'm looking for something with a GUI.) Any ideas? I strongly prefer freeware. I found Archiver and StiffIt, but they are both commercial.

• Software to automatically download a file from FTP and then rename->replace existing file

  Hi. We pay a news agency to provide us mp3's of hourly news bulletins. They put the mp3's on a FTP server just about 10 minutes before every hour, with files named after date and time (example: 02012010_1600.mp3 or similar). I need to find some solution to download only the latest modified file from the FTP server, rename it to news.mp3 and replace the previous news.mp3 that was created. This should prefferably run on a Windows 2008 Server, as a service if its possible. Anyone have suggestion for software?

  I have always used hardware based raid because it (IMHO) it's on the right level (feel free to dispute this) and that OS failures are more common to me than hardware issues. Thus if the OS fails the raid is gone and so is the data, where on a hardware level regardless of OS the data remains. However on a recent Stack Overflow podcast they stated they would not used hardware raid as the software raid is better developed and thus runs better. So my question is, is there any reasons to choose one over the other?

  I have gotten a request to roll out a total of 8 internet cafe's in a large network. Budget is non-existent as it will all be done for a non-profit. I was planing to use Ubuntu and live-cds to minimize the amount of management required, but I can't seem to find any suitable internet cafe system that is Ubuntu based. The requirements are pretty basic: It needs to keep track of logged in time and log out users when their time it up. No billing will be done, it will just be used to ensure people can share the computers fairly. It should be possible to force logout from a central system. Users will be unskilled, so it has to have a GUI. What (preferably free, considering the shoe-string budget) software would you suggest to manage this?

• Printer monitor software across multiple workstations (AD integrated)

  I was asked to see if there is any kind of (free) software that allows multiple people in an office that use the same printer to see what jobs have finished recently, which are queued and which is printing. Main reason is that sometimes multiple people have the same task where they need to print some kind of form, and they are unsure whether or not their colleague has already printed the file. Because the printer is AD integrated, they only see a short message when printing, but they do not see a proper printer queue. A simple tray icon/tool would be perfect, no real graphical user interface is required. If this turns out to be too hard to find, I will attempt to write a simple application or script for the job, but since this is a low priority job I decided to ask here first before I start messing around with scripting which isn't my forte. • Installing software after .wim image

  I have been looking all day into how to install software to a .wim image. I have a .wim image of a laptop that will be deplyed to 20 more. The image is pretty much good to go except I need to add a couple more drivers and a couple more applications. Is there a way to do this in the answer file? Do I have to deploy the image, install the drivers/application, sysprep, and recapture the image? Any information relating to this will be greatly appreciated. Leon ps I have only been using answer files and imagex. Would like to stick with this for the time being. I plan on using WDT and WDS when I have some time to learn about it.

  I am using a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.5. I am new to this development environment, and previously worked on Windows. I want to do very basic image editing, like cut a portion of an image, add some text label to the image, circle some part of the image, etc. I am downloading acornfree from this Url, but when executing acornfree, it said the Mac OS I am using is not supported. • Music tagging software more consistent than Tag&Rename?

  A few years ago I spent an insane amount of time using the excellent Tag&Rename program. However, I find that for random, inexplicable reasons, some music tools simply disregard my tags, drop or destroy the album art, or have strange handling around some characters. For example, "AC/DC" is poorly handled by most music players when I use Tag&Rename to write the tags. And if I write the tag in iTunes, Winamp seems to not like it, vice versa, and neither of those work with Amarok. Is there a piece of software that works like Tag&Rename but is more compatible, or is there a way to ensure Tag&Rename writes more compatible tags?

  What are the options for backup software for: HOST - Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with HyperV VIRTUAL - Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with Exchange 2010 VIRTUAL - Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with SQL Express / SharePoint VIRTUAL - Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with Terminal Services (10 users working on it) VIRTUAL - Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with AD/DNS What I'm looking at is possibility of having an offsite backup thru FTP, maybe copy to usb/esata/lan drives for easy taking backup data outside of company. What I've been looking at: - Symantec Exec Backup 2010 System Recovery has an offsite backup but I would need 5 licenses and it doesn't have granular recovery. - Symantec Exec Backup 2010 seems OK but a bit expensive - Microsoft DPM 2010 requires full SQL Standard and for each machine I would need 4 Enterprise licenses. But does it allow Offsite backup without need for additional license and server outside of company (for doing DPM backup of DPM). What other options? This is 10 people company and so the costs matter but also convenience and security. Offsite backup is requirement.

  I have a problem of accidental input language switch. I tried many different settings in order to not do it - change hotkey, install some software (Key Switcher, Keyboard Ninja, Punto Switcher)... But nothing helped. I used to certain hotkey (Ctrl+Shift). Any other hotkey make me even more suffer. The software s found has no feature to avoid accidental switches. What I want is to find a piece of software which can stick "English US" input language to my "Visual Studio". And any Ctrl+Shift pushes inside VS should not lead to language switch. Have any ideas?

• Any good software to help me memorize passwords?

  I'm using KeePass(X) and other tools to keep most of my passwords. However, it turns out, there is still about half a dozen passwords I'm using on regular basis that I would prefer to just remember. So, do you people know of any good programs, preferably open-source, to train yourself using a particular password and thus to memorize it? I know I can remember a 96-bit entropy password rather well if I practice entering it 3 days, 5 minutes for each day, I just want a good software to simplify the process and exclude the possibility of shouldering or otherwise leaking the password.

• Linux software raid robustness for raid1 vs other raid levels

  I have a raid5 running and now also a raid1 that I set up yesterday. Since raid5 calculates parity it should be able to catch silent data corruption on one disk. However for raid1 the disks are just mirrors. The more I think about it I figure that raid1 is actually quite risky. Sure it will save me from a disk failure but i might not be as good when it comes to protecting the data on disk (who is actually more important for me). How does Linux software raid actually store raid1 type data on disk? How does it know what spindle is giving corrupt data (if the disk(subsystem) is not reporting any errors) If raid1 really is not giving me data protection but rather disk protection is there some tricks I can do with mdadm to create a two disk "raid5 like" setup? e.g. loose capacity but still keep redundancy also for data!?

  I apologize if this question has come up before - I can't seem to find it. Tonight my wife and I purchased a small samsung netbook and have been enjoying it for a light-weight solution around the house. My wife has a game she loves to play that was installed on her last laptop, but we'd like to put it on the netbook. The problem is, there's no cd-drive on the netbook and the game must be installed from a CD. What other ways can I install software from a CD onto the netbook lacking a local cd-drive on the device itself? I would prefer to not have to create image files, and mount virtual drives, etc.

• Any beat detection software for Linux?

  Amarok 2 can search through music collection using ID3v2 tag's 'bpm' field. That would be very nice to retag the entire music collection so I can find the 'mood' of the track I like. However I've not found any beat-detection software that could have helped me. Have you ever used one? CLI, preferably. Also I'm interested if there's anything alike for tagging FLACs with the same 'bpm' field. Thanks! :) P.S. I'm aware there's a nice moodbar feature, however it's useless for searching.

Is this a huge undertaking for a web developer? What's the level of difficulty of maintaining a server and keeping up with the latest security patches and all that kind of fun stuff. • *nix OS that is easy to update to latest software

  I need to configure a server (*nix) that runs our (bespoke) CMS and Applications. In the past I have defaulted to using Cent OS 5, but I find this outdated difficult to upgrade the software to the versions we require. For example, we need PHP 5.3, but CentOS 5 has 5.2. Updating is fine but breaks something else (normally MySQL support in PHP). Eventually it will get to a situation where I can't upgrade because of missing dependancies and incompatible versions. Error: Missing Dependency: httpd = 2.2.3-43.el5.centos.3 is needed by package httpd-devel-2.2.3-43.el5.centos.3.i386 (updates) Is there a better alternative OS for hassle free updates, I need: Apache 2.2.17 (the development version for apxs) MySQL 5.5.8 PHP 5.3.5

• Free DNS software with failover support?

  I'm looking for DNS software that can accomplish the following: Check health of all A records at set intervals If server is unresponsive after multiple successive checks, replace A record with a working server When a server is down, check it periodically. Once it's up, restore normal A records Here's an equivalent I thought of: Run DNS servers with very low TTL (minutes) Use a cron job to periodically query all webservers Use sed to replace A records if need be, and then restart DNS server I have a hard time believing there isn't already something that can accomplish the above. I'm not looking for a paid service, and I'm restricted to anything I can run with root access to a VPS. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!
