• PEN daemon as load balancer, IIS web logs not showing true requester IPs

  I have a Hercules vmware appliance, which is a micro-linux vm that runs the PEN daemon and acts as a server load-balancer. It takes any incoming request on the appliance's IP and routes it out to a number of alternate IPs. The logs of the daemon show the true IP of the browsers hitting the website. The logs of the websites themselves (iis 6 and 7) only show the requester IP as being that of the load balancer. The IT manager tells me that when we had a hardware appliance (serveriron XL) doing the load balancing, the web logs reflected the requester IPs accurately. Is there any way to get this resolved with the daemon, or will I be digging that out of the closet and plugging it back in?

  So I'm trying to get the Java 7 as the default version on my machine, running Mac OS X 10.9.3. When I run: java -version I get: java version "1.6.0_65" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_65-b14-462-11M4609) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.65-b04-462, mixed mode) When I run: javac -version I get: javac 1.6.0_65 When I go into System Preferences -- Java -- Update, I see: Your system has the recommended vesion of Java. Java 8 Update 05. I guess I have a few questions: 1) Why does my Java Control Panel claim I have Java 8, but my work in the terminal (when checking my Java version) says otherwise? 2) I just downloaded the .dmg file for Java SE 7 from Oracle's site and installed, though it's nowhere to be seen... • Fsck stuck on "Clone Multiply-claimed blocks"

  Update: I fixed the issue. But I don't see eth0 directory in /sys/class/net Any idea how to fix that? I could not bring up eth0 and I need it badly so that I can backup everything over the network since I'm working on VM console. This virtual machine sda1 is stuck. I've tried e2fsck and fsck and both gets stuck after "Clone multiply-claimed blocls? yes" I've waited for around 5 to 8 hours and it still the same. I could not mount the filesystem without fixing these errors. I'm doing this after un-mounting all filesystems in rescue mode.. Reboot does not help. Any suggestions? • moving to a new dedicated server and need advice on the new setup

  I currently have a dedicated server that we have outgrown and we are moving to another server. Our current setup was a 8gb W2008R2 server running a W2008R2 IIS virtual machine using VMWare. We are moving to a 2 cpu 24 gb server with W2012 R2 on Hyper-V. On our virtual machine we are running iis 7.5 and sql server. Sql Server seems to want to eat up all the memory so I had to cap it at 2gb, which doesn't seem sufficient. My question is, when I move the virtual machine to the new server, should I create 2 virtual machines, one for sql server and one for IIS? Or should I leave them both on the same virtual machine? Or even, put the Sql Server on the dedicated server and run the IIS in the vm? I'd like some input on how this should be done, I've not got the experience needed to make the right call. Thanks!

• Upgrading kernel on Debian server hosting Xen 3.2.1

  I have a physical server running Debian 6 and Xen Hypervisor 3.2.1, and kernal -a says "2.6.26-1-xen-amd64". I have not updated for a long time, because when I run apt-get upgrade, one of the updates is linux-image-2.6-amd64. My understanding was that my kernel needs to have Xen support, will upgrading to this kernel break my dom0? I have myself up against a wall, because I host a VM for a website that isn't mine, so I need the latest security updates, but can't risk taking them offline. Eventually they will move off, and I won't be hosting something I am unqualified to host, but that isn't the point right now.

• Improper output in SSH session on OSX using FreeSSHd on Windows with cygwin bash/sh shell

  I am testing out running an SSH server on a local Windows VM. I have installed FreeSSHd and set the command shell to "c:\cygwin\bin\sh --login -i" (bash as well) with "Use new console engine" unchecked. • Ctrl-C not killing process in CMD.EXE

  I've had this issue for a while even after reinstalling. Issue happens after I reinstall all my programs and not in a fresh Windows install (obviously). Might have to spin up a VM and install each program 1 by 1. I suspect it's Git for Windows with it's mini Cygwin wrapper causing this issue. Anyway the issue is basically pressing Ctrl-C does not kill the running process. However when I run cmd.exe or Git Bash or administrator Ctrl-C works great again. Disabling UAC seems to break it again. I've made a video of the issue here. Many thanks.

• specify temp folder for msi extracted files used for installation

  I was recently installing Microsoft Windows SDK for Windows 7 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 to create my build server on a VM (Windows 2003 R2 Std), I was wondering that it would be nice to specify the temporary folder for the files being extracted by MSI for use during the installation. This should ideally work for any MSIs. I have some more virtual hard disks I have attached to this VMs, to point the temporary folder for MSI to one of these virtual hard disks would be quite productive since I can remove/discard this virtual hard disk later. Compacting the C drive VHD is a pain, and does not always reclaim space correctly. I tried changing the %temp% and tmp environment variable with no effect? • KVM CLI install for CentOS 6.3 defaults to Minimal Install

  So I now I've installed KVM (and its associated tools and packages- libvirt, VMM etc.). On the GUI (i.e using the VMM), installation works as its supposed to. However, when I try to create a VM using the command line interface, the OS (I am working with CentOS 6.3) defaults to a Minimal Install instead of giving me options to choose from at the time of installation. I am trying to install using the following command: virt-install \ --connect qemu:///system \ --virt-type kvm --name testVM2 \ --ram 512 --disk path=/var/lib/libvirt/images/testVM2.img,size=8 --vnc \ --cdrom /media/db18de8e-0853-49fb-80de-5c794d58a46f/CentOS-6.3- x86_64-bin-DVD1.iso \ --network network=default Specifying the OS-type or the OS-variant parameters doesn't make a difference. Is there something that I am missing out on or some other parameter that I must specify? Thanks in advance.

• Windows pysical server provisioning question with HPSA 7.8

  I have a physical server that I am trying to provision Windows to. At 58% of the way through copying files form the Core to the target server, the process hangs with either a samba time-out or an error indicating that %path%\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt. I can build a VM on the same subnet with the same media (merely a different profile to catch the different unattend.txt file) with no issues. I can also provision RHEL5 to this server with no issues. The buildmgr logs indicate that eventually the job is timing-out. Samba logs show that connections are made, and then eventually closed - about the time that the build process times-out. Any ideas on where to look next?

• How can I have Windows 8 go to the desktop by default?

  I've played around a smidge with the Windows 8 Consumer Preview in a VirtualBox VM and I think the improvements under the hood may be worth tolerating the Metro UI crap. I don't like that the entire screen changes to something I don't care about when I hit the Windows key and start typing but I can deal with it. The one thing I cannot stand, though, is that it starts in the Metro interface by default. I have to hit the "Desktop" tile to get to a normal interface, and while I can hit "escape" to go back to the desktop and dismiss Metro, it doesn't work when you first log in. When you first log in, you have to hit that "Desktop" tile. I know that the Enterprise versions of Windows 8 will go to the desktop by default. I don't know but I would assume that there's probably some registry key that would handle this. Has anyone figured that out yet?

  On debian squeeze, I am trying to do the following : fetch sources package from the wheezy source repository bootstrap a squeeze chroot for several architectures build the packages for several architectures (i386, amd64 + all and any) I want both the fetching, bootstrapping and build operation to be scriptable, repeatable, and run as a normal user. For the environment setup, I want to make as little use of the root account as possible (install the necessary dependencies, and maybe some visudo stuff). If possible I would like to avoid using a VM (pbuilder with user mode linux) So far I have tried several things with pbuilder (require root), debootstrap (require root) with little success. • How to configure a gateway virtual machine

  I have a VM-host configured with eth0 (10.145.73.207) and eth1(192.168.101.231), and three VMs connecting the Internet through NAT, with the default gateway of 192.168.122.1. Now I want to configure VM2 as a gateway. I added eth0 (192.168.122.63) and eth1 (172.16.1.109) for VM2. It can connect to the Internet with each of them. I changed the default gateway of VM1 from 192.168.122.1 to 192.168.122.63. However, when I traceroute google.com on VM1, it shows that the packet only reaches 192.168.122.63, no further. • Hyper-V core NIC speeds and registry changes

  Good afternoon, On a Dell PE T610 I have Hyper-V core running, with 2 x Broadcom BCM5709C NetXtreme II GigE installed. I have noticed that copying large files 17GB for example, from a network physical server to the Hyper-V host local drive [not vm guest] is very slow in comparison to copying from Physical to Physical servers. Copying a 17GB file physical to Hyper-V host takes 30 minutes Copying a 17GB file physical to physical host takes 15 minutes Can someone tell me exactly what registry nodes I should disable on Hyper-V NICs to improve performance. So far I have gone to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4 D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and set the following to 0 on both physical NICs: *LSOv1IPv4 *LSOv2IPv6 *TCPUDPChecksumOffloadIPv4 *TCPUDPChecksumOffloadIPv6 Should I also disable *TCPConnectionOffloadIPv4 & *TCPConnectionOffloadIPv6? • How to get a good current VMWare browser appliance?

  I'd like to have a small VMWare virtual machine that runs a copy of Firefox, with Flash enabled. (Or some equivalently-capable browser.) I tried doing some Google searching with no luck finding good keywords, and tried looking through VMWare's "marketplace" of VMs, but all I found were things from 2006 or so. Is there a reasonably easy way to get a current one? Ideally, I'd like to just download one somewhere, but in the alternative, a quick how-to guide would be useful. I know I could go through the whole process of getting a full-Linux-install VM and setting things up, but that seems like quite a lot of trouble and ends up with a pretty heavyweight solution to the problem, so I'm hoping there's a simpler way.

• What are the benefits of running chef-server instead of chef-solo?

I've been able to get a simple web app up an running from a base Red Hat VM using chef-solo. Our end goal is to use Chef (or another system) to automatically deploy application topologies to the cloud as we run builds. Our process would basically run like so: Our web app code, dependencies, and chef cookbooks are stored in SCM A build is executed and greats a single package for images to acquire and test against The build engine then deploys new cloud images that run a chef client to get packages installed. The images acquire the cookbooks from SCM or the Chef server and install everything to get up and running What are the benefits and/or use cases for getting a Chef Server running? Are there any major benefits to have a Chef Server hold and acquire the cookbooks from SCM vs. using chef-solo and having a script that will pull the cookbooks from SCM?

  Would like to have connectivity between azure virtual machines and on LAN users. My current network has a Cisco ISA550 connected to the WAN (one Ethernet cable into the office the fiber transceiver is on a different floor)and any public servers can be one-to one NAT-ed to have a public and private IP. What is the best way to get a reliable connection. Between end users and the cloud? I want to know the preferred on site endpoint. Do the azure vm's have to have a local ip in the LAN subnet? (Right now 10.10.0.0/20 or 255.255.240.0 to give room if this is the case). If in purchased an asa550 would I put it behind or in front of the isa550. Would it be ahead or peer with the users switches? What is the best way to get a reliable connection. Between end users and the cloud servers?

  I have a couple of SIP phones and use callcentric. I get a lot of junk calls. I'd like to implement the following feature and would like some suggestions on how to do this: Once I get a junk call, I typically hang up. I think want to dial some number (like *23 or something) and I'd like the last number that was received to be put in a database. Any future call from that number will be directed to VM or a busy tone. I'd appreciate some pointers on how I'd go about doing this.. I prefer an open source solution.

• Apps crashing - Android 4.3 in VirtualBox

  Performance and stability problem with Android 4.3 in VM. Tried with x64 and x86 System. VirtualBox V4.3.2 in use. Android could be installed on x86 only. But there it seems to be successfully, using the "Linux 2.2" template on VirtualBox. 1024MB RAM and 2GB Harddisk defined. Some times Android browser is crashing and closing. In all cases stuff like "Skype" and "Plats vs Zombies" does never startup after installing. Crashes directly. "Plats vs Zombies 2" is not able to install. Is there any way of gettings such stuff work?

• How can I route packets from one application to a virtual machine in windows 7?

  I am trying to test an application running in windows 7, and I would like to send the packets it generates to a server VM (I am using virtualbox) on the local machine which will act as a simulation for when packets will be really sent over the internet to a distant server. I need to check for correctness of the packets in certain situations. Is there a way on windows to take packets produced by an application and instead of passing it to my router, pass it along to another process, i.e. my virtual machine. I'd prefer not to change any of the code on my application and would rather find an outside solution. Is there such a solution for windows 7?

• Reading PFS First Choice and Word Perfect 5 files in an XP or Windows 98 environment

  Hello all, My priest has 3 computers, Windows 3.1, Windows 98 and Windows XP. Recently his power supply blew out on his Windows 3.1 computer and he needs to get to the data on the hard drive. He's looking into imaging the hard drive and setting it up as a VM, which might be a bit much for him. Ignoring getting the data off the hard drive as a separate problem, are there any programs out there that can read files from PFS First Choice and Word Perfect 5. He already has Microsoft Office so solutions involving that are preferable. If he can install the software on his Windows XP or 98 computer, that would be helpful too. Thank you for your help

• Classic ASP on large memory server

  I have a client with a large ASP app that apparently is fairly memory intensive. I’m helping them migrate to new hardware they have running Win2k8 R2. They have 4 physical servers with 32gb of RAM each. I’m making the assumption that ASP apps run as a x32 process. So I see that we have two options: On the application pool enable web gardens. Use the physical servers as VM hosts and split the box into say 4 web servers each. Any thoughts on which path will provide us better performance? I’m just not really sure how ASP will handle a machine with lots of memory, and I’m worried it won’t really be able to address the memory well. (you can ignore all the obvious stuff like increased maintenance of 16 web servers vs 4, or the flexibility virtualization gets us over physical servers, etc)

• DYNDNS setup with TightVNC on Windows Server 2008 R2

  Hey all, i seem to be having a problem with getting ports to forward on my Windows Server 2008 R2 PC. I already set all my port forwarding for 5900/5800 on my router for my PC's IP address (192.168.1.22) but when i try to use the TightVNC PFPortChecker on port 5900 it tells me its not opened! I can not even connect to my DYNDNS server name (xxxxxxx.dyndns.org). As a side note, i am running Windows XP SP3 within a VirtaulBox inside Windows Server 2008 R2 but running the PFPortChecker in Windows 2008 R2 brings the same results as it does in the VM. I also added them to the Windows Firewall Advanced Security form to add those inbound ports for full access. What could i possibly be missing? Thanks for your time! David
