• Few GUI problems with minimal install

  I installed a minimal Ubuntu with a complete functional GUI, but facing a few problems. nm-applet's icon won't show in the notification area, but I can connect to wired internet fine. I am not able to configure my wireless or VPN this way. gksu's authentication screen is different from the usual graphical authentication - the screen turns gray as usual, but there are more options like save password for this session or keyring. And most importantly, it won't accept my password no matter what. And lastly, Gwibber seems to install no matter what, but there's not a single package in my knowledge that I installed has anything related to Gwibber. I would welcome any help regarding these three issues. I did not mention what packages I installed, because the list is long, but I will do so if anyone requests. Thank you in advance!

  I want to consult you in an SEO matter which i am completely lost with, I've built a social mobile application that allows users to share text content and made all the content that appears on the application available via the web through dedicated links, however, those links cannot be navigated through the website but they are generated when users shares content through the app to social media networks. I've implemented this method on three applications with totally different content, and I've directed all generated URLs to be from the main company website which is http://frootapps.com so when users shares something, the url will change to http://frootapps.com/qareeb/share.aspx?data=127311. My question, which one is more preferable, a dedicated website for each app that uses such method? or it is ok to keep doing it the same way I am doing it?

• Emacs editor copy and deletion

  I am a huge fan of emacs.. But even after 1 year of practising on emacs I am unable to solve these three annoying issues about emacs please help me! 1.Whenever I want to copy the content from emacs into other things such as a website textarea I have to use GUI copy button because ctrl+w doesn't work. Is there any way to do this from emacs-command line. 2.Whenever I delete something using ctrl+shft+SPC or ctrl+k etc I don't want it to be stored in kill ring how do I do it(I know ctrl+D does this but it deletes only one char at a time)? 3.Whenever I select text by mouse and press backspace then text goes into kill ring(Which I want to change as mentioned) but same doesn't happen when I select text with ctrl+SPC(set mark) and then ctrl+f/ctrl+b etc. Please help me! • How can I downgrade my version of Evolution to the one used in Ubuntu 11.04?

  I just upgraded, and like a few other users I had issues with Evolution email after the upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 and then 12.04. I know to make backups, but in this case I stupidly didn't think that the program would be changed (Firefox wasn't modified at all), and so I failed to make a backup. Three days later I am still having issues, and recovering the emails is proving to be difficult with only partial recovery or it not working at all. My question is, can I add in some source to use the 11.04 version of Evolution, since that version was working fine and would know what to do with the current files (Inbox, Outbox, etc.) I also noticed that Evolution's restore feature said it changed the way emails are handled, so it seems like a downgrade could put everything back to normal. Worst case scenario, I start over, but I wanted to try everything first. Thanks in advance! I'm also open to any suggestions for restoring the old emails files to the current version of Evolution.

• Why does this static field always get initialized over-eagerly?

  I am looking at this excellent article from Jon Skeet. While executing the demo code, Jon Skeet says that we can expect three different kinds of behaviours. To quote that article: The runtime could decide to run the type initializer on loading the assembly to start with... Or perhaps it will run it when the static method is first run... Or even wait until the field is first accessed... When I try this out (on framework 4), I always get the first result. That is, the static method is initialized before the assembly is loaded. I have tried running this multiple times and get the same result. (I tried both the debug and release versions) Why is this so? Am I missing something?

• Installing chrome gives an error: "dependency is not satisfiable"

  I just installed ubuntu on my laptop, everything works fine, but I'd like to use chrome instead of firefox. I downloaded the .deb file from the chrome website, and when I open it, the install buton inside the software center is inactive (I can't click it) and it's telling me dependency is not satisfiable: libcurl3 I did a search for libcurl3 in the Software Center, the three results I'm getting are already installed. Any ideas how to fix this? I also tried installing chromium-browser, but that's not working out neither.   I'm having a really hard time finding a great alternative for Macbook Pro (I have a MB pro '08). I'd like to return to ubuntu and need a kick-ass laptop. If you help, you've lead me back to linux :) Req: ubuntu friendly lots of memory 8G+ ssd 160GB+ great processor (intel sandy?) connect up to three external displays. this triple display looks cool No optical drive, NO DVD 13-17" dock. In place of the ridiculous optical drive (It's like having a floppy drive IMO): extra battery? 2nd ssd? extra graphics card? your suggestion The laptop should be designed for not having dvd. I can't find many, unless they are tiny 11"... I'm exited to know your answers!

• New Procurement Report for Transportation Sourcing

  Welcome to our fourth annual transportation procurement benchmark report. American Shipper, in partnership with the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) and the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA), surveyed roughly 275 transportation buyers and sellers on procurement practices, processes, technologies and results. Some key findings: • Manual, spreadsheet-based procurement processes remain the most prevalent among transportation buyers, with 42 percent of the total • Another 25 percent of respondents use a hybrid platform, which presumably means these buyers are using spreadsheets for at least one mode and/or geography • Only 23 percent of buyers are using a completely systems-based approach of some kind • Shippers were in a holding pattern with regards to investment in procurement systems the past year • Roughly three-quarters of survey respondents report that transportation spend has increased in 2012, although the pace has declined slightly from last year’s increases • Nearly every survey respondent purchases multiple modes of transportation • The number of respondents with plans to address technology to support the procurement process has increased in 2012. About one quarter of respondents who do not have a system report they have a budget for this investment in the next two years.

Other than some direction and impetus from management, we're pretty much on our own to develop the new website. None of us have any project management experience nor do my two coworkers seem like they would be interested in taking on that role, so I feel like it's up to me to implement some kind of structure to the development process in order to avoid issues down the road. • How can I share my python scripts with my less python-savvy business person partner?

  I'm taking financial mathematics as an elective, and I'm working with real life finance industry worker type people. It's actually kind of fun. When I pulled out a macbook at one of our meetings, I had four lifelong windows users look at me like I had three heads. Anyway, I'm helping with design and simulation of our trading strategy, and I wrote a little thing using matplotlib to visualize historical stock data. However, these guys don't know how to use git, or install python, or deal with path-related package management things. I need to be able to send my scripts to them to use, and I need to do it with absolutely minimal effort on their part. I was thinking something on the lines of py2exe, but I'd like to hear some advice before I go ahead.

• Should I put an app I wrote on my résumé even if it has low ratings?

  Last summer I wrote an iPhone app for the Toronto Film Festival. The development was pretty rushed, and the design goals were changed multiple times. In particular, the central film list view controller was redesigned three times in the week before launch. I forgot to update one of my functions to match the changed design, and the app shipped with a serious bug. While the app was fairly popular, this bug crippled the app and it got a lot of poor reviews. I fixed the bug as soon as I got a crash report, but it got stuck in the iTunes review process for the duration of the film festival. Should I put this app on my résumé? The app has poor ratings and most of the reviews mention crashes, but it's also the only work experience I have. Additionally, how should I approach this topic in an interview? • Would a model like this translate well to a document or graph database?

  I'm trying to understand what types of models that I have traditionally persisted relationally would translate well to some kind of NoSQL database. Suppose I have a model with the following relationships: Product 1-----0..N Order Customer 1-----0..N Order And suppose I need to frequently query things like All Orders, All Products, All Customers, All Orders for Given Customer, All Orders for Given Product. My feeling is that this kind of model would not denormalize cleanly - If I had Product and Customer documents with embedded Orders, both documents would have duplicate orders. So I think I'd need separate documents for all three entities. Does a characteristic like this typically indicate that a document database is not well suited for a given model? Generally speaking, would a document database perform as well as a relational database in this kind of situation? I know very little about graph databases, but I understand that a graph database handles relationships more performantly than a document database - would a graph database be suited for this kind of model?

• Unity, gnome-shell and Cinnamon don't have their top panel after removing Lubuntu

  Using Ubuntu 12.04. First it came with Unity, then with a zeal of trying other Desktop Environments and I have installed GNOME-shell and no conflicts, works fine. Then I have gone through Lubuntu and Xubuntu as well. But some panel problem started with Lubuntu raised and I have removed Lubuntu DE from my PC. But that thing got conflicted with my Unity, GNOME and Cinnamon & they are not working. These three are not having only of their Panels. I just see any empty desktop. Currently only KDE and Xfce can run fine with my Ubuntu 12.04. But I want to get back with Unity, GNOME and Cinnamon also.

  When trying to install the three amd64 debs for the 3.7.0 kernel from: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/2012-10-22-quantal/ I get this error: dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of linux-headers-3.7.0-999-generic: linux-headers-3.7.0-999-generic depends on linux-headers-3.7.0-999; however: Package linux-headers-3.7.0-999 is not installed. It installs and works correctly but leaves me with broken packages in Synaptic. Is this just a bug with how Ubuntu is packaging these latest debs? Or am I doing something wrong?

• Removing applications that were not installed by the software center

  I am new to Linux in general and Ubuntu is the only distro I have used (about three months)..... I have installed some applications through WINE ,they work great, but now I want to uninstall them... I have used the WINE uninstall option (application-Wine-uninstall) but they still appeared in the WINE text box as did their icons on the desktop... I uninstalled wine through the software center thinking the application running in wine may be deleted also, however it doesnt appear to be the case..... How can I delete software (using line commands preferably, but GUI instruction would be fine) and if I am using line commands how can I see what name and application is saved under.... thanks

• Laptop resumes from suspend while lid is closed

  I have a Dell Studio 15 and I am running Ubuntu 10.10. When I close my lid or select the suspend option, the machine suspends as indicated by the slowly pulsing power indicator. I'll put the machine in my bag and after a while it seems that the machine resumes, at least I think. When ever I go to get it, it's overheated and the system cannot resume. I am guessing that the processor resets in this overheat condition, but heat is still generated. This has happened about three times and I'm getting worried that I'll end up damaging the machine. How can I diagnose why the system is resuming from suspend? Can I force it to never resume from suspend if the lid is down?

• Some Adsense domain's ads are causing document.write() statements that remove the html from the page

  All that is output on the page is the domain name of the advertiser, for example 'www.solar-aid.org'. The rest of the content is stripped, I believe because of a document.write() statement. I'd like to know if this is a common issue or something wrong with our setup. There are three domains causing the issue, which we've blocked from Adsense as a result. solar-aid.org kiva.org grameenfoundation.org Given the type of organizations I think they may be within the default group of 'public service ads' within the Backup Ads setting. If the issue doesn't completely resolve itself soon (one customer of ours complained today, even though I blocked them 5+ days ago), I'll disable public service ads and select the 'fill space with a solid color' option.

At this point we have three videos available: DAX in Action shows the power of DAX in PowerPivot solving common patterns not so easy or fast to solve in other languages DAX: Calculated Columns vs. Measures shows the difference between calculated columns and measures in DAX Introduction to DAX has a content corresponding to the title! The first two videos are freely available, the third one is longer and visible only to subscribers. The goal for this series of video is to reach advanced Excel users and BI developers that are new to DAX. If we should categorize this content, it’s a sort of level 200 session in a conference.   I’m trying to make TraceTune (and eventually ClearTrace) work the way I do.  My typical query tuning session goes like this: Run a trace and upload to TraceTune/ClearTrace Tune the slowest queries Goto 1 I might do this two or three times in one day and then not come back to it again for weeks or even months.  This is especially true for those clients that I only visit a few times per month.  In many cases I’ll look at a query, decide I can’t do much with it and move on.  I needed a way to capture that information. TraceTune now lets you enter a comment for a query.  It can be as simple or as complex as you like.  The comment will be shown inline with the execution history of that query. This should let you walk back through your history with a query and decide whether you should spend more time tuning it.
