  I have'nt plunged into Android Development as yet though Java Classes C++ all that is not new to me. Here are the questions folks. • Windows Vista claims wireless key is the wrong length

  A family member of mine is house sitting and has been given the details of their wifi. The access point is an Airport Express, it has WEP encryption (I think) and they've been given a passphrase to use. I know it's a passphrase and not the encrypted key as it's an English word. The passphrase is 10 characters long. The problem is that Vista complains that it's not a valid key as it must be a 5 or 13 character non-hex key or a 10 or 26 character hex key. (From what I've read this suggests the encryption is WEP?) I've found a couple of suggested solutions, but I'm not actually at the house at the moment so I wanted to make sure I have a good chance of getting it to work when I'm there but have no internets to ask. Solution 1: Vista needs to be told explicitly what kind of encryption and key is being used. Specify in the connection settings that you are using WEP and that it is a "shared key". Solution2: Try converting the passphrase to hexadecimal using an ASCII-hex converter and entering that.

• Database security / scaling question

  Typically I use a database such as MySQL or PostGreSQL on the same machine as the application using it, which makes access easy and secure. I'm just now building the first site that will have a separate physical database server (later this year it will). I'm wondering 3 things: (security) What things should I look into for starters pertaining to security of accessing a separate machine's database? (scalability) Are their scalability issues that I should think about pertaining to this (technology agnostic)? (more ServerFaultish but related) If starting the DB out on the same physical server (using a separate VMWare VM) and later moving to a different physical server, are there implicit problems that I'll have to deal with? Isn't another VM still accessed via localhost? If these questions are completely ludicrous, I apologize to you DB experts.

• Changing Render Kits in Browser

  I'm working on a project to develop a cross-browser testing web app. Simply put, I'm tired of having to maintain multiple browsers on the same system and IE in VMware solely for the purpose of testing. Does anyone know if there is any way to change the render kit programmatically? For example, if I insert a URL, I would be able to load the URL and switch the browser render within a frame of some assortment. I am experienced with PHP, JS, and RoR if there is a solution using any of those. Thank you! John

• Getting 2560x1600 out of an ATI Radeon HD 4670 on Windows 7

  Greetings, I've got a Dell Studio XPS 1640 laptop (with an ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics card) running Windows 7, and just bought a Dell 3007HPC 30-inch monitor for it. I'm trying to figure out how to get the full 2560x1600 experience out of this setup. Here's what I've done so far: Plug in using an HDMI cable and an HDMI--D-DVI converter on the monitor side. Open up Screen Resolution. Maximum supported setting is 1920x1080. Tried that (several times) - sometimes it doesn't work at all (blank screen); other times, it only shows the first 1280x800 pixels on the bigger screen. Tried using the Catalyst control center - played with various settings there, couldn't get the screen to show anything interesting. Tried using PowerStrip to set a custom resolution, again, no luck. Spoke to a Dell Preferred Custom Support guy for about an hour before giving up. He remote-accessed my computer, and told me that (1) The maximum supported resolution for XPS 1640 is 1920x1080, and (2) 'it seems to be working from where he sees it, must be a connection issue'. None of this has helped. Does anybody have ideas? Should I be using a different cable set up? Am I using Powerstrip wrong?

• Virtual network interface in Mac OS X

  I know that you can make a virtual network interface in Windows (see here), and in Linux it is also pretty easy with ip-aliases, but does something similar exist for Mac OS X? I've been looking for loopback adapters, virtual interfaces and couldn't find a good solution. You can create a new interface in the networking panel, based on an existing interface, but it will not act as a real fully functional interface (if the original interface is inactive, then the derived one is also inactive). This scenario is needed when working in a completely disconnected situation. Even then, it makes sense to have networking capabilities when running servers in a VMWare installation. Those virtual machines can be reached by their IP address, but not by their DNS name, even if I run a DNS server in one of those virtual machines. By configuring an interface to use the virtual DNS server, I thought I could test some DNS scenario's. Unfortunately, no interface is resolving DNS names if none of them are inactive...

• Does the Lenovo t60p vga port support an s-video signal?

  I just bought a new television. The problem is it turns out it doesn't have a VGA port. It does have: s-video, component, hdmi and scart. My Lenovo t60p only has vga. If have search frantically for a solution and even though it seems I have sooo many options they are all dead ends. Or I keep ending up having to buy a 100 euro box to convert the signal. However, I found that some video cards support s-video through the vga port. It says look it up in your video cards documentation. I have a Lenovo t60p laptop with a ATI MOBILITY FireGl v5250. But I can't seem to get my hands on any documentation where this is supposed to be documented. I found this website: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=179529&highlight=s-video There this guy says he thinks it's in the t60 but dropped in the t61, but suggests to the guy with the t60 that it won't work. I can't really conclude anything from that. Furthermore, I am not looking for the best of the best quality. So that I can just by a vga to s-video cable to achieve my goal.

• Windows 7 blank dvi screen

  I've just upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I had an issue during installation; after setup rebooted instead of going to the 'Completing installation' screen I just got a blank screen. I eventually(!) figured out that this meant 'un-plug your second monitor to proceed'. When I did this, installation completed in a snap and everything runs fine. However, whenever I plug my second monitor into my PC, it gets no signal, the the primary monitor removes all windows. icons, the taskbar and the cursor just shows the desktop wallpaper. I'm running a GTS8800 512mb, with the latest drivers (197 IIRC). The monitors are identical, and both plug into DVI sockets on the graphics card, the only difference is I connect one using a straight DVI cable and the other using a VGA cable and a VGA-DVI converter. It's the DVI cabled one that has the issues (if I plug it in by itself it gets no signal). Everything was working fine before I upgraded to Windows 7 (I used to run XPSP2). Anyone have any ideas?

• Is there a Windows API to modify file type associations for an extension?

  I'm looking for a way to programatically tweak the particulars of a file association on a Windows system. For example, the "Application User to Perform this Action" setting for the "Open" action for a particular file type. Clearly I could do this by modifying the registry directly, but if there is an API I'd prefer to use that as it would likely be more resilient to changes in the OS handling of mapping extensions to applications. For my purposes I'm needing to write this in VBScript (.VBS) file because it is part of a package to be used with VMWare ThinApp that mandates it. However, I'll port/wrap/whatever I need to make this week, so I am open to any solution (including using the .NET framework)

• Windows Mobile Development on MacBook Pro?

  I am a frequent Windows Mobile application developer in need of a new development laptop. I am considering a MacBook or Macbook Pro running either Fusion from VMWare or Parallels Desktop. This will give me the option to port my applications to the iPhone depending on what MS does with WM 6.5 and 7. Has anybody tried doing Windows Mobile development using Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center (or ActiveSync) and VS2008 on the MacBook Pro using one of these virtual machines? Does the device emulator work properly? What about debugging a Windows Mobile device over a USB cable? In general, do most USB drivers (non HID) designed for Windows work under these virtual machines? Thanks.

• Lamp with mod_fastcgi

  Hi! I am building a cgi application, and now I would like it to be like an application that stands and parses each connection, with this, I can have all session variables saved in memory instead of saving them to file(or anyother place) and loading them again on a new connection I am using lamp within a linux vmware but I can't seem to find how to install the module for it to work and what to change in the httpd.conf. I tried to compile the module, but I couldn't because my apache isn't a regular instalation, its a lamp already built one, and it seems that the mod needs the apache directory to be compiled. I saw some coding examples out there, so I guess is not that hard once its runing ok with Apache Can you help me with this please? Thanks, Joe

• Cross Browser Testing on Virtual Machines - Issues?

  I am part of an organization in which there is contention amongst some very competent folks as to whether or not testing cross-browser behavior for JavaScript applications on virtual machines (for IE6/7/8, FF2/3, Chrome on XP/Vista/7) is reliable. This is using VMWare server on a Linux box host. While the discrepancies seen are few, there are cases in which it has proven difficult to tell if it is a product of virtualization or just different machine configurations. My question to the community is, what is people experience with this? Is there any credence to the claim that VM pose inconsistencies, or are they generally spot-on reliable? Can we trust them?

• 2008 Datacenter Word Automation issue

  We have an application that uses word automation. It works fine under Windows XP, but does not work on our Windows Server 2008 64-bit virtual machine running on VMware ESX unless it is running as the domain administrator. Under any other account (including a local admin), Word starts, uses a lot of CPU for 40 seconds when opening a document, and then just hangs. Our application does not access anything not on the local machine, and this machine is not being used for anything else (not a domain controller, etc). I know others have posted similar issues, with the solution of creating a Desktop folder somewhere under the windows directory. We did this, and it did not solve the problem (Word did not get as far as it did before we did this though). Please don't turn this into a thread about why I am trying to do this, whether I should do this, or whether I need to. For argument sake, I don't need to do this, but understanding what privilege a local admin does not have that is needed to do this is a legitimate concern.

• Why does clicking on Windows 7 Printer Properties Result In Driver Not Installed?

  The question I need to ask is has anyone heard of getting a "driver not installed" error when clicking on a printer's properties on Windows 7, and is there a workaround? Here are the details of the problem. One of our users has a Windows 7 desktop, and an HP LaserJet 4050 T connected to via a parallel-to-usb converter. The PLC5 universal driver was installed for series 4050 printers. I needed to install the PLC 6 driver, which completed successfully. The user is an administrator of the system, and I was prompted to and accepted running as Administrator to install the driver. After the install, I went to see the 4050's properties and was prompted that the PLC6 driver was not installed. I believe the PLC6 driver was installed, because the PLC5 driver resulted in receiving an official HP error page indicating the printer was "not set up for collating" as the second page of printing two copies of a one page email. This problem did not occur with the PLC 6 driver. Oddly enough, setting back to PLC5 produced the same error about the PLC5 driver not being installed. I ignored/dismissed the error box (did not re-install the driver), and reproduced the error, with the second page being the HP not set up for collating error page. Any thoughts on what is causing this and how to clear it would be appreciated. The closest fix I could find was on a Microsoft tech page, and they had me clear winsock out of a Administrator run command line, followed by a reboot. That did not fix the problem. • Solaris 10 keyboard problem

  Im runing Solaris 10 - but im having problems with the keyboard. Instead of - i get /, and instead of y i get z, etc. I tried changing every option in the menu "Keyboard Behaviour". I also tried changing kmdconfig from xorg to xsun, but then the graphics goes all wild and ugly - although the keyboard works fine then. Also cant change resolution in xsun mode. By the way, im runing Solaris from Vmware, but i doubt this has anything to do with this.

  I'm running the app engine devserver on localhost:8080, and want to access it from ie7 running on parallels. I've tried all of the tips here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/61449/how-do-i-access-the-host-from-vmware-fusion And they seem like they should work, particularly accessing via the gateway ip address. I've also sudo ipfw add allow tcp from 8080 to 8089 for good measure. Still no dice. I can access the external internet from ie7. The connection settings on parallels are set to 'Shared networking'. I'm out of ideas.

• How to put 1000 lightweight server applications in the cloud

  The company I work for sells a commercial desktop/server app that runs on any non dedicated Windows PC or server and uses Tomcat for all interactions with the application. Customers are asking that we host their instance of the application so they don't have to run it locally on their own servers. The app is lightweight and an average server, in theory, could handle 25-50 instances before users would notice a slowdown. However only 1 instance can run per Windows instance (because the application writes to a common registry branch) so we'd need something like VMWare to create 25-50 Windows instances. We know we eventually need to reprogram to make it truly cloud-worthy but what would you recommend for a server farm or whatever for this? We don't have the setup to purchase our own servers so we must use a 3rd party. We have budgeted $500 - $1000 per year per customer for this service. Thanks in advance for your suggestions, experiences and guidance.

• Find whether TV supports S Video

  Hello Freinds I have a TV (some unknown model) which has 3 sockets to insert 3 wires red, yellow and white. A DVD Player can be connected to the TV using sockets and the TV displays that the TV is in AV mode when DVD is running. Now i have a Desktop which has a S Video Port and i have a wire to connect the S Video port from my computer to those red, yellow and white sockets using appropriate pins. Now i have searched all over the remote and it does not switches to S Video Mode, it has only 2 modes of operation i.e. 1 Cable Connection (Third Party DTH Receiver receives channels and i pay subscription) and 2 AV Mode. It does not have S Video Mode or any other mode. Now my question is whether i can connect the S Video cable from my desktop to the above described TV or i should look for a new TV if i wish to connect the S Video from Computer to TV or there is any sort of converter that can help? I did tried connecting the S Video cable from Desktop to TV, but it did'nt worked. TV kept on displaying Blue Screen of AV Mode. Regards

• 3000 videos songs... some are loud in voice & some low.. I want to make them equal (equal in volume only)

  I have thousands Video flv/avi files, which are all songs only. Some of them are high in volume and some are low. Every time the song ends I have to up or down the volume at once..to escape my ears ruined by headphones... and by woofers, save my life from my neighbor sleeping after hard-earning all the day long. :-( Any idea to make all files sound equal? Does such kind of application/software exist? Any converter that may convert all audio files into same volume? I know iTunes has sound-check option but can it convert? If I want to write CDs, does any burner have the feature like this, to burn in equal sound? If yes, suggest something for me... For, I am really really worried... It would be a great help..... • Restoring a subversion repository to workcopy revision

  My subversion VM died the other day (host hardware melted) and I had to restore a backed up copy of the vmware server image. The restore went well and the VM is running again on a new host. The problem I have is that my restored repository is at revision 60 but my working copy on my PC is at 66. When I try and commit my working copy I get the following error message. svn: Commit failed (details follow): svn: No such revision 61 What is the best way to force this commit and bring subversion up to the same revision as my working copy?   Hi, Which lightweight SQL Server type could I use on my Dev machine for a C# VS2010 project? (e.g. sql server express, sql server ce, full version etc). That is, I'm running on a VMWare fusion instance on my MacBook, and just want something to develop against for a C# VS2010 project. I'm planning on having a simple database (not many tables) but will use Entity Framework. I haven't used SQL Server before so a quick pointer re what is the best database admin interface/app to use for the version you recommend (e.g. to create database, tables etc).
