• Windows 7 not booting after installing Ubuntu 12.10

  I have Samsung sf511 with Windows 7 Home preinstalled. I installed Ubuntu 12.10 last night. First I mounted downloaded ubuntu 12.10 iso on a DVD from Windows 7, then I restarted, changed the boot option to DVD and let the Ubuntu DVD run. I selected "Install ubuntu alongside windows 7". In the next step I allocated the diskspace . Ubuntu installed perfectly and it ranned OK. I spent a good time exploring Ubuntu. When I restarted to start my work on Windows again and selected Windows 7 to boot, it showed blue screen after booting up (after logging in). I tried restarting several times but the same blue screen keep showing at the same point of bootup. I also restored windows to an earlier time. Left with no option I booted from Samsung provided windows recovery option. The recovery process ran fine but when it restarted to boot Windows for the first time all I see is a black screen. Nothing happens. It switches between dark command promt screen to a pitch black screen as if it's rebooting after every 10 seconds or so. The laptop can be booted from the DVD Drive or USB drive but is not booting from Harddisk. What should I do in order to use both Windows 7 and Ubuntu?

• Failure to Boot Windows 7 after Ubuntu install

  My computer is a (brand new) PC notebook, without a CD drive running Windows 7. I followed this page to install from USB: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStickQuick The installation went well and i am using Ubuntu now (v. 12.04 i believe) I want to be able to dual boot Ubuntu and Win7 The problem is that the disc partitioning during the Linux install caused a problem with Windows, caused some problem with windows, and windows can no longer boot when i choose it at the GNU GRUB screen. When i restart my computer i can successfully boot Linux, but not Windows 7. At the GRUB screen - if i run Win7 normally, it freezes, shows a blue screen, and returns back to GRUB - if i run Win7 recovery, i dont know how to access the files that i need in order to run windows again, so nothing helpful happens. Can you please tell me what i would need to do(or link a guide) in order to run Windows again. (Windows and Linux is preferable, but if thats impossible going back to only Windows will help too) Im guessing the easiest thing to do is just to reinstall both OS, or is there anyway to undo the partition i made during the install? • Lost Windows 7 files

  My intention was to have a dual boot system with Ubuntu and Windows 7. Obviously I did something wrong because although I had a system menu on booting (is it normal to appear DOS-like?) which gave me an option of booting into windows 7, I was unable to do so. Also, when I booted into Ubuntu, my Windows 7 drive was not available. The Windows 7 drive was an internal 1TB drive partitioned into a 200GB (OS) and a second partition making up the remainder. I was still unable to access this Windows 7 drive even after deleting Ubuntu as I kept getting an 'requires an NTFS drive' error, or something similar. I could not even re-install Windows 7 as the disk was not recognised. I did eventually get the drive back by but I cannot for the life of me remember how. I did try to recover my lost W7 data using Ontrack Easy Recovery (which has always been succesfull in the past for post format recovery) but it would not recognise the 1TB although it was now formatted as NTFS. From other posts on this site, I gather that this is considered a 'Windows 7 Site' problem by Linux users. However, I would dearly love to recover some of my lost Windows 7 files. I had resigned myself to a lot of lost personal data but I happened to notice that a 2TB drive I had connected through a USB docking station had been repartitioned. It must have happened when I installed Ubuntu as I can think of no other explanation. I certainly do not remember consciously requiring Ubuntu to do this.   I'm attempting to write a key to Registry. It works on Windows XP, but fails on Windows 7 / Vista. The code below throws a Security Exception with description "Requested registry access is not allowed." RegistryKey regKey = Registry.LocalMachine.OpenSubKey("SOFTWARE\\App_Name\\" + subKey, true); I realise that this has to do with the UAC settings, but I couldn't figure out an ideal workaround. I don't want to fork out another process, and may be don't even want to request for any credentials. Just want it to work the same way as on Windows XP. I have modified the manifest file and removed requestedExecutionLevel node. This seems to do the trick. Is there any other possible workaround, and are there any serious flaws with the "manifest" solution?

• Outlook 2003 add-in - Getting COM exception on application shutdown after creating WPF window

  Hi! I'm developing an outlook 2003 add-in. Until now I used only winforms to display one form, but today I've added a WPF window for more complex stuff. DUe to the WPF window, a COM exception is being thrown when outlook shuts down. Does anybody know why? I need to start a separate thread for the WPF window in single apartment state. • OutOfMemoryException with Image.Clone - Only on Windows 2003

  So here's my issue. I have an image that I need to shrink. The original image is a grayscale PNG, which isn't a huge issues except that when I shrink it down, the thermal label printers pickup the artifacts and print them on the label. So, what I did was change the image to black & white (Format1bppIndexed) before resizing, like this: Dim bte() As Byte = System.Convert.FromBase64String(imgStr) Dim ms As New IO.MemoryStream(bte) Dim bmp As New System.Drawing.Bitmap(ms) Dim monoImage As Drawing.Bitmap = New Drawing.Bitmap(1200, 1800, Drawing.Imaging.PixelFormat.Format1bppIndexed) Dim rect As New Drawing.Rectangle(0, 0, 1200, 1800) monoImage = bmp.Clone(rect, Drawing.Imaging.PixelFormat.Format1bppIndexed) And then I resize it. This code works fine on my Windows 7 machine, but when I run it on the Windows 2003 Server box that it calls home, it always throws an OutOfMemoryException when it hits the bmp.Clone line. Any ideas as to what's happening, or perhaps a better solution to converting the image to B&W?

• Grant access for users on a separate domain to SharePoint

  Hello. I just completed development of a SharePoint site on a virtual server and am currently in the process of granting users from a different domain to the site. The SharePoint domain is SHAREPOINT, and the domain with the users I want to give access to is COMPANY. I have provided them with a link to the site and added them as users via SharePoint, which is all I thought I would need to do. However, when they go to the link, the site shows them a SharePoint error page. • Visual Studio .NET 2003 - Ignore Specific Library for libcmt vs libcmtd

  Hi, I have a template VS .NET 2003 project, which colleagues copy and customise when developing their software. It appears the template was altered a while back to set the IgnoreSpecificLibrary property to have libcmt.lib for both release and debug builds (i.e. for both release and debug, the build should ignore libcmt.lib in the linker). Some projects based on this have since been built, with the release build pulling in libcmtd.lib (evident by looking through the project .map file) which appears to have caused some runtime issues (i.e. a dialog window being flashed up as though a breakpoint had been set). Does setting IgnoreSpecificLibrary to exclude libcmt.lib automatically make the project link against libcmtd.lib? What is weird is that building the template (with the incorrect setting) links against libcmt.lib whereas some of the customised projects (though not all) link against libcmtd.lib. Any ideas?

  I'm seeing what I think is strange behaviour from object files output by the Microsoft Visual Studio 2003 tools. The file utility tells me: asmfile.obj: 80386 COFF executable not stripped - version 30821 For objects created by the assembler, but for objects coming from C files, I get just: cfile.obj: data Using Microsoft's dumpbin utility and the objdump I got from cygwin, I can disassemble the assembly-built file, but I get no useful results from either utility for the C-built files. I have a couple of questions related to this difference: What is the object file format generated by the MSVC2003 compiler? How can I disassemble that object file? I am particularly interested in getting the disassembly in AT&T syntax - I'm doing a port of a large source base to make it work with GCC, and I would like to use this method as a shortcut for some of the inline assembly routines in the project.   So here is the situation. I currently run a mail server for my small non-profit company. My mail server (Merak Mail Server) keeps logs in .log files and mail as .tmp files. Essentially these are just text files that are kept on the server. Problem is that when I put text into the "Containing text" field on Windows Explorer, it always misses the files and tells me no results returned. Then when I search the files one by one (painful at best), I find the files I need. Do I not understand the search feature well enough, or maybe I have it indexing wrong. I really don't care what I need to use to search the files, even a third-party app is fine with me, I just want to type an email address into a box and search all of my log files or email files and find out which one I am looking for. It can be Windows Search or something else, as long as I can find a way to get the job done I will be happy. Pay solutions are fine as well. Thanks everyone in advance.

• Outlook 2003 Add-In Setup Project with COM DLL Deployment Problem

  Hi, I developed an Outlook 2003 add-in which uses the com dll redemption. I created a visual studio 2008 setup project, added a custom action to run "caspol.exe -machine -addgroup 1 -strong -hex [key] -noname -noversion FullTrust -n \"Name\" -description \"desc\" and moved the registry keys under software to HKLM as described in http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc136646.aspx#AutoDeployVSTOse_InstallingtheAddinforAllUsers to ensure all-users compatibility. I included the redemption.dll in the setup with vsdrfCOMSelfReg (vsdrfCOM throwed an error). My problem is: When installing the setup on a test machine under an admin account, it runs fine under all users, however when we use the company wide software deployment which runs under a system account the setup executes but the add-in wont load. If I repair the installation with an admin account again it loads just fine. Shouldn't a system account have the required permissions to install all of the components? What options do I have? • Windows 7 fails to install

  I'm upgrading from Vista SP1 (which was actually upgraded from XP over a year ago) to Windows 7 RTM (64-bit Ultimate to 64-bit Ultimate). After 4 hours or so, the install fails with the message "This version of Windows could not be installed, Your previous version of Windows has been restored, and you can continue to use it." This error is back at my Vista desktop, there's no error that I could see during install, I just a message indicating that it was reverting everything. I tracked down the error logs and here's the log at I uploaded the error log (from C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther) and uploaded onto Pastebin. • How do I restore to a delta file (disk) on Vmware ESXi

  Using VMware Server ESXi (freebie version) I have a Virtual Machine (win 2k3 r2 server). When I first provisioned it I took a snapshot of it. I recently tried to clone the primary drive using my standard hardware-based method to grow a windows disk. (using knoppix, clone drive to a new drive, make it bootable, then I intended to extend the partition via diskpart from within windows). This process failed; I tried setting the cloned drive (via the vmware gui) to replace the original drive, boot and be done. This didn't work out so well. The machine never booted. I checked the boot order, the disk location and all the basics I usually do. As a failsafe, I then tried changing all the settings back so the machine would boot to the original drive and I could figure out (as I eventually did) a better way of growing the disk. However when I powered on the machine with the original drive, it reverted back to that initial snapshot I created; It lost all the changes since. I looked in the file system and found a few files, I think the keyfile here is one named "delta" and I'm assuming that's the disk I want, but I can't find a way to have the Virtual Machine actually use that drive/file. It isn't available to add when I go to add an existing drive. Do I need to somehow commit that delta to the original drive and then boot from it again? Can you point me in the right direction? I've since discovered the proper way of growing drives using "vmkfstools" but I need to get back to the original state of the machine to try this out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I'm trying to run only the browser in the system - locking access to everything else. Only the supervisor can resume the normal functioning of the system after giving a password. This kind of activity is usually done by virus. Disabling the registry for Task manager etc. Does anyone know of any source available that does this? I might be able to pull it off in Windows XP. But have anyone tried this in Windows 7 ? The aim is to to emulate the Chrome OS on Windows. Only the browser. Nothing else.

• Web Server slows down (ASP.NET)

  below is a question I posted on stackoverflow . as suggested by Martin Clarke I also post it here. We have a really strange problem. One of the servers in the server farm becomes really slow. We see a number of timeouts in the logs and overall response time is not where it should be (and is on other servers in the farm). What is also strange is that it is not just the web app - Just logging into the server takes up to 1.5 min to show you the desktop. Once you are in, the system is as responsive as ever - unless you try to launch something, i.e. notepad - it takes another minute to launch and after launch it works fine. I checked a number of things - memory utilization is reasonable, CPU is below 15%, windows handles, event logs do not show anything. Recycling the aps.net process does not fix it - it still takes over a minute to log in. Rebooting the server helped, but now it started to slow down again. After a closer look we found out that Windows Temp directory is full of temp files - over 65k files. This is certainly something to take care of. But my question is could it be the root cause of the sluggishness, or there is still something else lurking in the shadows? Edit After more digging I am zeroing in on the issue related to the size of temp directories. This article: (see the original post this thing will not let me include a second link) describes something very similar. It still does not answer the question why the server is still slow even there is no activity.
