• Tales of a corrupt SQL log

  Warning: Im a simple dev, not an all powerful DBA with godly powers. This morning, one of my sites was down and DNN reported a problem with the database.  A quick series of tests revealed that the culprit was a corrupted log file. Easy fix I said, I have daily backups so its just a mater of restoring a good copy of the database and log files.  Well, I found out thats not exactly true.  You see, for this database, I have daily file backups and these are not database backups created...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Lending epub files for limited time to users

  I am looking for components to build a digital library who lends people epub (ebooks) for about a week. It's like a digital version of the offline old public library. Now I have found several flash (pdf) file streaming solutions. But that would require an active internet link. And like the public library, you are able to take your books to the beach or pool on holiday abroad where you have no connection. So streaming is no option. The other file restriction method I have found was DRM, but that would require a really expensive license of Adobe Content Server 4 which is not suitable for my little hobby project. But it seems that adobe content server and Adobe Digital Editions is the only option at the moment. Or are there open source alternatives?

• Alternatives for comparing data from different databases

  I have two huge tables on separate databases. One of them has the information of all the SMS that passed through the company's servers while the other one has the information of the actual billing of those SMS. My job is to compare samples of both of these tables (for example, the records between 1 and 2 pm) to see if there are any differences: SMS that were sent but not charged to the user for whatever reason that may be happening. The columns I will be using to compare are the remitent's phone number and the exact date the SMS was sent. An issue here is that dates usually are the same on both sides, but in many cases differ by 1 or 2 seconds. I have, so far, two alternatives to do this: (PL/SQL) Create two tables where i'm going to temporarily store all the records of that 1hour sample. One for each of the main tables. Then, for each distinct phone number, select the time of every SMS sent from that phone from both my temporary tables and start comparing one by one using cursors. In this case, the procedure would be ran on the server where one of the sources is so the contents of the other one would be looked up using a dblink. (sqlplus + c++) Instead of storing the 1hour samples in new tables, output the query to a text file. I will have two text files, one for each source. Then, open the first file and load all of it's content on a hash_map (key-value) using c++, where the key will be the phone number and the value a list of times of SMS sent from that phone. Finally, open the second file, grab each line (in this format: numberX timeX), look for numberX's entry on the hash_map (wich will be a list of times) and then check if timeX is on that list. If it isn't, save it somewhere to finally store it on a "uncharged" table (this would also be the final step on case 1) My main concern is efficiency. These samples have about 2 million records on each source, so just grabbing one record on one side and looking it up on the other would not be possible. That's the reason I wanted to use hash_maps Which do you think is a better option?

• Updating a database connection password using a script

  An interesting customer requirement that I thought was worthy of sharing today. Thanks to James for the requirement and Bryan for the proposed solution and me for testing the solution and proving it works :0) A customers implementation of Sarbanes Oxley requires them to change all database account passwords every 90 days. This is scripted leveraging shell scripts today for most of their environments. But how can they manage the BI Publisher connections? Now, the customer is running 11g and therefore using weblogic on the middle tier, which is the first clue to Bryans proposed solution. To paraphrase and embellish Bryan's solution a little; why not use a JNDI connection from BIP to the database. Then employ the web logic scripting engine to make updates to the JNDI as needed? BIP is completely uninvolved and with a little 'timing' users will be completely unaware of the password updates i.e. change the password when reports are not being executed. Perfect! James immediately tracked down the WLST script that could be used here, http://middlewaremagic.com/weblogic/?p=4261 (thanks Ravish) Now it was just a case of testing the theory. Some steps: Create the JNDI connection in WLS Create the JNDI connection in BI Publisher pointing to the WLS connection Build new data models using or re-point data sources to use the JNDI connection. Create the WLST script to update the WLS JNDI password as needed. Test! Some details. Creating the JNDI connection in web logic is pretty straightforward. Log into hte console and look for Data Sources under the Services section of the home page and click it Click New >> Generic Datasource Give the connection a name. For the JNDI name, prefix it with 'jdbc/' so I have 'jdbc/localdb' - this name is important you'll need it on the BIP side. Select your db type - this will influence the drivers and information needed on the next page. Being a company man, Im using an Oracle db. Click Next Select the driver of choice, theres lots I know, you can read about them I just chose 'Oracle's Driver (Thin) for Instance connections; Versions 9.0.1 and later' Click Next >> Next Fill out the db name (SID), server, port, username to connect and password >> Next Test the config to ensure you can connect. >> Next Now you need to deploy the connection to your BI server, select it and click Next. You're done with the JNDI config. Creating the JNDI connection on the Publisher side is covered here. Just remember to the connection name you created in WLS e.g. 'jdbc/localdb' Not gonna tell you how to do this, go read the user guide :0) Suffice to say, it works. This requires a little reading around the subject to understand the scripting engine and how to execute scripts. Nicely covered here. However a bit of googlin' and I found an even easier way of running the script. ${ServerHome}/common/bin/wlst.sh updatepwd.py Where updatepwd.py is my script file, it can be in another directory. As part of the wlst.sh script your environment is set up for you so its very simple to execute. The nitty gritty: Need to take Ravish's script above and create a file with a .py extension. Its going to need some modification, as he explains on the web page, to make it work in your environment. I played around with it for a while but kept running into errors. The script as is, tries to loop through all of your connections and modify the user and passwords for each. Not quite what we are looking for. Remember our requirement is to just update the password for a given connection. I also found another issue with the script. WLS 10.x does not allow updates to passwords using clear type ie un-encrypted text while the server is in production mode. Its a bit much to set it back to developer mode bounce it, change the passwords and then bounce and then change back to production and bounce again. I have hardcoded the password into the file but you can pass it as a parameter as needed using the properties file method. Im not going to get into the detail of that here but its covered with an example here. Couple of points to note: 1. The change to the password requires a server bounce to get the changes picked up. You can add that to the shell script you will use to call the script above. 2. The script above needs to be run from the MW_HOME\user_projects\domains\bifoundation_domain directory to get the encryption libraries set correctly. My command to run the whole script was: d:\oracle\bi_mw\wlserver_10.3\common\bin\wlst.cmd updatepwd.py - where wlst.cmd is the scripting command line and updatepwd.py was my update password script above. I have not quite spoon fed everything you need to make it a robust script but at least you know you can do it and you can work out the rest I think :0)

Shortly, I want to elicit a link from a html page, so I need to get the link by using regular expressions or the other techniques in which I'm asking about.   I am new to ubunto hence not aware about basics of using ubunto. I wanted to install rar password cracker for which I ran the .exe file which gave me following error : 'An error occurred while loading the archive'. Then I came to know that after installing wine, it will be possible to run my .exe file. But when I try to install wine from 'Ubuntu Software Center', i am getting another error saying 'Package dependencies cannot be resolved'. I am stuck now. Kindly help. I am using ubuntu 12.04 LTS

• Netbeans 7.01 in 12.04 repository, no javascript support

  Hi I've installed Netbeans 7.0.1 from ubuntu 12.04 repository, i'm having many issues, The most important is that I cannot have help in writing javascript. Each .js file appear as a usual text file and even javascript sintax in jsp pages appear as normal text. I've already checked in tools -- options -- misc-- files and i cannot find there the .js association and the text/javascript mime-type. Another issue, really awfull, is that I cannot access CVS server if i do not run Netbeans as a root user. Someone had the same troubles i listed above? Have you some tips for solving them avoiding to install a newer version from Netbeans website? thanks in advance

  Start with the NetBeans Paint Application and do the following to build it via Gradle (i.e., no Gradle/NetBeans plugin is needed for the following steps), assuming you've set up Gradle. Do everything below in the Files or Favorites window, not in the Projects window. In the application directory "Paint Application". Create a file named "settings.gradle", with this content: include 'ColorChooser', 'Paint' Create another file in the same location, named "build.gradle", with this content: subprojects { apply plugin: "announce" apply plugin: "java" sourceSets { main { java { srcDir 'src' } resources { srcDir 'src' } } } } In the module directory "Paint". Create a file named "build.gradle", with this content: dependencies { compile fileTree("$rootDir/build/public-package-jars").matching { include '**/*.jar' } } task show << { configurations.compile.each { dep -> println "$dep ${dep.isFile()}" } } Note: The above is a temporary solution, as you can see, the expectation is that the JARs are in the 'build/public-packages-jars' folder, which assumes an Ant build has been done prior to the Gradle build. • updater stuck on downloading python files

  However i am a java programmer is consider myself as a linux noob. So i could use a little help here... I am trying to update my ubuntu from version 10.04 to 12.04.1 (LTS). The downloading start and runs at around 10MB/s untill i am somewhere near 26% and the speed just drops to 0. I figured i could use the command "do-release-update" so i could see what it was doing. Again the same occured: the downloading stucked on 26% at "http://nl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubunutu/ precise/main python-qt4 1386 4.9.1-2ubuntu1". It says it downloaded 41% of that file/package. It also tries another wget on the same file every X seconds. Help? Greetings Tim, Holland.

• Java Plugin - Firefox

  Having trouble getting Java to work with Firefox (22), I have followed the advice in this question and on the official Java site, but nothing seems to work. I have the latest Java (1.7.0_25) in /opt/java and have set a symlink in /usr/libs/mozilla/plugins for the libnpjp2.so file. I can see the file in the terminal and Java runs fine. However Firefox shows nothing in about:plugins. I have also run export JAVA_HOME="/opt/java/jre1.7.0_05/bin/java" to be on the safe side. I know there are multiple plugin directories such as /usr/lib/firefox/plugins and /usr/lib/firefox-addons/plugins, but all my current plugins show they are located in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins when viewing the about:plugins page. A bit stuck on where to go next?

• Importing a windows project into android using cocos2d-x

  What I am trying to do today is to import a full project to Android, but no tutorials are available for that that I have seen. My approach was to create a new android project, copy all the classes and resources in the folders and calling ./build_native.sh but I get an error because most of the files are not being included in the project. I tried opening the Android.mk and I can see why "LOCAL_SRC_FILES := AppDelegate.cpp \ HelloWorldScene.cpp" are the only files linked. Should I manually modify the make file or can it be automated by some way I don't know? Thank you. UPDATE: I manually added all files and headers to the make file and I get errors linking Box2D or cocosdenshion libraries.

  To make the Toolbar look native in Ubuntu (like the application in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=sO8hiPreNBg), I don't want to show a border. In my main window of my application I am able to set the property for the border width to zero on the GtkBox under tab "common". But on a dialog (created via "quickly add dialog") there is no option on the GtkBox to set the property under "common". The property for the border width sill not appears under common! What can I do to solve this problem? I tried to create a Window-Element and tried to delete the Dialog-Element. Result: Then I was able to set this property in Glade but I could not do anything with the Window-Element and its Child-Elements (e.g. set the native look for its toolbar) in the corresponding .py-File (for the ui-File) because I destroyed dependencies...

• Installed UBUNTU12.04 in Legacy, when changed to UEFI just runs the Terminal, not GUI

  Well, I installed Ubuntu 12.04 in a Gateway NE 522 with Windows 8. First, I had to install it in Legacy mode, because in UEFI it would not run the bootable USB. In the Legacy mode it runs perfect. Once done that with help of the "Boot-Repair" I changed it to the UEFI and disabled the secure boot mode. GRUB runs fine but when I run ubuntu I get the following message: microcode: failed to load file amd-ucode/microcode_amd_fam16h.bin kvm: disabled by bios kvm: disabled by bios kvm: disabled by bios and then I just get access to the terminal. From there, I have already tried with reinstalling unity and gmd. When I try to install amd64-microcode the same error ocurrs ( microcode: failed to load file amd-ucode/microcode_amd_fam16h.bin ) by the "updating the microcode on all online processors..." phase of the installation. Can somebody tell me how can I recover the graphical interphase of ubuntu from the terminal? Thanks a lot

• How can I monitor a website for malicious changes to the files

  I had an occasion recently where our website was compromised - a link farm was added to a couple of the pages on one occasion, and on another occasion, a large and nasty aspx file was put on the server. I won't mention the host's name (Hostway), but I was pretty annoyed that someone was able to do this. No, it wasn't a leaky password - around 10 sites hosted by HW with consecutive IP addresses got trashed. Anyway. What I need is a utility or service (preferably free) that takes a snapshot of my websites contents, and then regularly monitors the files (size and datestamp) for unauthorized changes or additions, and alerts me. I've used web services that monitor one file for changes, but I'm looking for something a bit more aggressive.

  I'm trying to get my video card properly setup to handle 3D acceleration. After searching a bit, I've come across a few howtos that tell me I need to edit my xorg.conf file. That file doesn't exist. X.org is installed by default, I'm sure, and I figured this video card would be widely supported. 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) Any ideas on how I can get this to work properly and play Starcraft II? Or any game for that matter? No resolution problems or anything, just no 3D rendering.

• Referencing a picture in another DLL in Silverlight and Windows Phone 7

  This one has burned me a few times, so here is how it works for future reference: Usually, when I add an Image control into a Silverlight application, and the picture it shows is local (as opposed to loaded from the web), I set the picture’s Build Action to Content, and the Copy to Output Directory to Copy if Newer. What the compiler does then is to copy the picture to the bin\Debug folder, and then to pack it into the XAP file. In XAML, the syntax to refer to this local picture is: <Image Source="/Images/mypicture.jpg" Width="100" Height="100" /> And in C#: return new BitmapImage(new Uri( "/Images/mypicture.jpg", UriKind.Relative)); One of the features of Silverlight is to allow referencing content (pictures, resource dictionaries, sound files, movies etc…) located in a DLL directly. This is very handy because just by using the right syntax in the URI, you can do this in XAML directly, for example with: <Image Source="/MyApplication;component/Images/mypicture.jpg" Width="100" Height="100" /> In C#, this becomes: return new BitmapImage(new Uri( "/MyApplication;component/Images/mypicture.jpg", UriKind.Relative)); Side note: This kind of URI is called a pack URI and they have been around since the early days of WPF. There is a good tutorial about pack URIs on MSDN. Even though it refers to WPF, it also applies to Silverlight Side note 2: With the Build Action set to Content, you can rename the XAP file to ZIP, extract all the files, change the picture (but keep the same name), rezip the whole thing and rename again to XAP. This is not possible if the picture is embedded in an assembly! So what’s the catch? Well the catch is that this does not work if you set the Build Action to Content. It’s actually pretty simple to explain: The pack URI above tells the Silverlight runtime to look within an assembly named MyOtherAssembly for a file named MyPicture.jpg in the Images folder. If the file is included as Content, however, it is not in the assembly. Silverlight does not find it, and silently returns nothing. The image is not displayed. And the fix? The fix, for class libraries, is to set the Build Action to Resource. With this, the picture will gets packed into the DLL itself. Of course, this will increase the size of the DLL, and any change to the picture will require recompiling the class library, which is not ideal. • Why can I only put some items in the launcher?

  Whenever I search for an item using dash it knows the default way of opening it. However if I drag a file into the launcher it can't be added, even if it is executable. For example if you would like minecraft to show up you will have to add a custom launcher, or if you use dash to find a pdf file, you can double click it and it opens evince however you cannot drag it into the launcher. The animation surrounding this behavior suggests that this was done by design. Why is this useful or necessary? Is it a bug?
