  I stumbled upon this news article on BBC, RSA splits passwords in two to foil hackers' attacks tl;dr - a (randomized) password is split in half and is stored across two separate servers, to foil hackers that gained access to either server upon a security breach. Now the main question is, how would this kind of system would be made... codespeaking, for PHP which I commonly develop on my web applications, the database password is normally stored in a configuration file, i.e. config.php with the username and password, in that case it is understandable that the passwords can be stolen if the security was compromised. However when splitting and sending the other half to the other server, how would this go on when making a communication to the other server (keeping in mind with PHP) since the other server password would be stored in a configuration file, wouldn't it? In terms of security is to keep the other server password away from the main one, just exactly how would the main server communicate, without exposing any other password, apart from the first server. This certainly makes me think...

• How do you get the total asset size (or total resource size) in an Android game?

  In an Android Java project, there are two folders, asset and res. To me, I usually put some stuffs, like PNG files, sound files, etc. in either one of the two folder. When resources are increasingly becoming more and more in those folders, the time it takes to load them will increase. Therefore, a loading screen is a must in these situation. The total size is to be used in a loading screen, so that I can guess the average time it takes to load each resources, from 0 bytes to its individual resource file size. I only know that by adding all individual sizes in a respective order, I will then obtain the total asset or res folder size, simply by adding them up. So, when it comes to getting the total file size from either folder, how do you obtain their individual resource/object sizes, respectively? Thanks in advance.

  The problem is that I'm trying to use my meshes with Bullet Physics for the collision part of my game. When I attempted doing this method with my GLM(model loading library by nate robins) model, I get a segmentation fault in the debug, so I figured that it doesnt like the coordinate variables of the model. If i use blender to export my model as a collision file, what type of file should I use? I have heard of a .bullet exporter, but i dont know hot to integrate this python script into my Blender 2.5 program.

  Recently, I've been working on the core of my engine, and as I'm moving forward I find myself developing throwaway code to read files and simple data into the engine. This got me thinking about how I should implement a file management system. After a bit of googleing I came across the Unreal Package format, and boy does it look like the perfect one. I think it's good because the way how it allows you to separate different assets into different packages and allow something like a level to reference the different packages. I was just wondering, is this possible with C#? Because the built-in serialization API in .NET does not seem to support any form of this, only reading and writing to a single file.

  Suppose that I have an input stream interface, which defines a method for reading data. I also have a seekable interface which defines a method for seeking. A natural way of defining a input file is then to implement both input stream and seekable. I want to construct a data decoder from the input stream interface so I can read data from a file or from another stream. The problem is that I also want to implement seek functionality to the data decoder, since I want to be able to step individual records not raw bytes. This is not possible if I only provide an input stream, which does not have the bytewise seek method. Should I skip the seekable interface and add the seek method to input stream instead and force all streams to at least leave it as a nop.

  I asked this question in SuperUser one hour ago, then I know this community so I moved the question here... I've been running Ubuntu 10.10 in a physical x86-64 machine. Today Update Manager reminded me that there are some updates to install and I confirmed the action. I should had read the update list but I didn't. I can only remember there is an update about cups. After the upgrading, Update Manager requires a restart and I confirmed too. But after the restart, the computer can't start up. There are errors in the console. Is it safe to just 301 redirect all pages to their SSL equivalent, for example in a common PHP include file: if($_SERVER['HTTPS']!="on"){ $redirect= "https://".$_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'].$_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']; header("Location:$redirect",true,301); exit(); } Obviously I'm aware this is also possible within a .htaccess file but that cannot be modified in our case. Obviously all internal links would be switched to https:// links but obviously we need to sort out incoming links from Google and elsewhere. Is this a sound approach? Are there any other gotchas to be aware of?

• Is there a cross-platform special directory I can use for game save files?

  I'm developing with LWJGL and Java on a Windows 7 laptop. I've successfully set up saving to the %appdata%\gamename\saves\ or long form c:\users\user\appdata\roaming\gamename\saves\ folder by using File dir = new File(System.getenv("APPDATA") + "\\gamename\\saves\\");. I have hobbyist level experience with Linux, and zero experience with OSX. My game will be fully cross platform. Is System.getenv("APPDATA"); cross platform? If so, where does it point to on Linux or OSX? Is there a best practices alternative that I should use?

• access denied when trying to open terminal on desktop

  ok so heres the skinny. I just moved some file using the sudo su command so i can move them to bin folder in file system then after closing terminal tried to reopen from desktop and got permission denied. I then rebooted and now i cant access my account and when trying to login it starts to boot then back to login screen. I then boot up in xterm and i get this message bash: /home/chris/.bashrc:Permission denied. I'm currently running xubuntu 10.04 and would like to get back in to that user. Can someone please help me. Not a noob but close to it. Thanks to anyone who helps and the quicker the better.

• Small hiccup with VMware Player after upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04

  The upgrade process Finally, it was time to upgrade to a new LTS version of Ubuntu - 12.04 aka Precise Pangolin. I scheduled the weekend for this task and despite the nickname of Mauritius (Cyber Island) it took roughly 6 hours to download nearly 2.400 packages. No problem in general, as I have spare machines to work on, and it was weekend anyway. All went very smooth and only a few packages required manual attention due to local modifications in the configuration. With the new kernel 3.2.0-24 it was necessary to reboot the system and compared to the last upgrade, I got my graphical login as expected. Compilation of VMware Player 4.x fails A quick test on the installed applications, Firefox, Thunderbird, Chromium, Skype, CrossOver, etc. reveils that everything is fine in general. Firing up VMware Player displays the known kernel mod dialog that requires to compile the modules for the newly booted kernel. Usually, this isn't a big issue but this time I was confronted with the situation that vmnet didn't compile as expected ("Failed to compile module vmnet"). Luckily, this issue is already well-known, even though with "Failed to compile module vmmon" as general reason but nevertheless it was very easy and quick to find the solution to this problem. In VMware Communities there are several forum threads related to this topic and VMware provides the necessary patch file for Workstation 8.0.2 and Player 4.0.2. In case that you are still on Workstation 7.x or Player 3.x there is another patch file available. After download extract the file like so: tar -xzvf vmware802fixlinux320.tar.gz and run the patch script as super-user: sudo ./patch-modules_3.2.0.sh This will alter the existing installation and source files of VMware Player on your machine. As last step, which isn't described in many other resources, you have to restart the vmware service, or for the heart-fainted, just reboot your system: sudo service vmware restart This will load the newly created kernel modules into your userspace, and after that VMware Player will start as usual. Summary Upgrading any derivate of Ubuntu, in my case Xubuntu, is quick and easy done but it might hold some surprises from time to time. Nonetheless, it is absolutely worthy to go for it. Currently, this patch for VMware is the only obstacle I had to face so far and my system feels and looks better than before. Happy upgrade! • Sharing samba-folder with root access

  Hi everyone, I have a staging server in my network running Ubuntu server 10.10, being my main development area. As I need to access the files in the Apache root from other computers in the network, I have setup samba with the following settings: [www] comment = Apache root www path = /var/www writable = yes force user = root force group = root On the host computer, running Ubuntu 10.10 desktop, I am trying to mount the drive with a bash file looking like below: #!/bin/bash sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.1.5/www /media/www/ -o username=myusername,password=mypassword,rw,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 What happens is that I get mount error(13): Permission denied Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) thrown in my face whilst trying to execute the mount. I've done exactly the same, with exactly the same smb.conf & mount-bash file on another computer in my network, but this just wont work. What am I doing wrong? I am running out of ideas.

• dhcpd fails to start

  I recently installed Ubuntu 11.10 I then used apt-get to grab isc-dhcp3. I removed Network-Manager and manually configured my network interface eth0. In addition, I hand edited a dhcpd.conf file and designated eth0 as the listen port in /etc/default/isc-dhcp-server. However, each time I attempt to start dhcpd it fails. When I view the syslog file, the last line is as follows: "Not configured to listen on any interfaces!" My eth0 interface works fine. I can ping addresses inside and outside the network and perform DNS queries. Any help would be greatly appreciated. AJ

• Zoneminder user control reset

  i have ubuntu 12.04 and i think i was an idiot and set all the restrictions to view" in the "users" tab on ZoneManager not "edit" as it should be. Now i cant do anything in the options, ive tried to find the conf file to edit to no avail. Uninstalled Zoneminder, apache and SQLite and reinstalled, but it just reverts all the settings back to the "view" setting. • run .profile function as cron job

  In the .profile file of the root user I have defined a function, e.g. function printDate() { date } I want to run this function every minute and append the output to cron.log. I tried adding the following crontab entry: * * * * * printDate > $HOME/cron.log 2>&1 But it doesn't work. The cron.log file gets created, but it's empty. I guess this is because the .profile isn't read by cron, so any functions/aliases defined therein are unavailable to it. So I tried changing the crontab entry to: * * * * * source $HOME/.profile;printDate >> $HOME/cron.log 2>&1 But this doesn't work either. It seems cron still doesn't have access to the printDate function because I see the following in cron.log /bin/sh: printDate: not found

• 5.1 surround sound

  Ok, So i've always had trouble with enabling 5.1 in ubuntu. Running 'alsamixer': I have: Master, Heaphones, PCM, Front, Front Mi, Front Mi, Surround, Center All are at 100% Card:HDA Intel Chip:Realtek ALC888 (This is my onboard sound, Its a dell studio, with 7.1 integrated sound) Running "speaker-test -c6 -twav" I only get the front 2 speakers (Right/Left) making any noise. The others make no noise at all. I have no other sound card to use as all my PCI slots are used up. • React to a modified directory

  In linux everything is considered as file, Now if I want to find only folders/directories not the files then how can i do that? I am getting all the modified files with the following command. find /Users/ghanshyam -type f -mmin -5 -print My goal is to generate the log file with all the modified/access folders. Here two options are available. create a module and call every time when a folder is modified (this one is bit difficult because I need to check particular event) create a cron task that will run after every 5 minutes. cron task will execute shell script and generate the log entries with the modified folders. Do you have any other option to do this task ?

• Rewrite rule to show as directory using .htaccess

  I want to implement a rewrite rule in my .htaccess file to show a specific url as a directory of my server. See the code below I written, RewriteRule ^(.*)/$ ?page=$1 [NC] This will rewrites urls like www.mysite.com/abc/ to www.mysite.com/index.php?page=abc. But if I request www.mysite.com/abc then it is throwing an 404 error. How can I write a rewrite rule which will match www.mysite.com/abc and www.mysite.com/abc/ both?
