• Hiring developers - listing IDE as a requirement?

  I've been looking at some job postings and noticed that a fair amount of them list IDEs under the 'required skills' section, even for senior positions. This is not localized to one company either, but rather it's something that comes up once in every few postings. I am perplexed by this job requirement, as my mentors and some of the best coders I've seen in my life were VIM/Emacs ninjas. Similarly, when I work with people I don't much care what tools they use as long as they are productive on the team. Can someone please explain the rationale behind hiring managers making IDEs an official job requirement?

  I am not satisfied with what I learned in Java 101 in University. I feel like, lot of time is spent on trying to figure out how to write something in Java properly. I feel like, my lack of knowledge of Java and eclipse is slowing me down. I would like to pay for a detailed and intensive course in Java & Eclipse. I can read a book and read tutorials, but it seems harder to discipline myself. Where can I find such crash courses outside of university courses?   I just got a job for a small project. I have all the relevant skills and knowledge to complete the project, but I am concerned about getting screwed over because this is my first time working on a consultant basis. We have already agreed on an hourly wage that I'm happy with, so that's not an issue.   i have been working in technology field for last 7 years. i started with vb.net windows application along with oracle plsql. Later on i did projects that included coding in java ,struts framework ,javascripts. I have lost interest in doing projects with struts framework and doesn't find oracle plsql appealing too. I would love to work with new technologies especially mobile techs and my interests in coding persists still. But i am not sure if my organisation will ever shift its tech base to new and modern frameworks. Now i am 25 years old and worried about taking the right decision. i feel like quitting the job but at the same time i am concerned if i have the sufficient tech skills to start working on modern technologies in other organisations.   I often have to deal with customers or users which are reporting errors in applications. Most of the time their content is something useless as ERROR!!! x does not work without much more information. For resolving the issue I have to request every single detail of them, which often is more time consuming than fixing the issue itself. Other send information in formats which are not ideal, like screenshots (of data records, not of errors) although they could send a link (we have access to the systems) and so on. How do you tell your users/customers to describe the problems with more details so that the whole process could be easier for both sides? edit This question is more about the social skills, than how to achieve programmatic collection of logs and error information. I'm aware of the fact that this should be part of good software design.

  Hello I'm trying to make some kind of tool for an school website, what I need to do is to make students take a test and according to what are the results (27 posibilities) they get a set of activities (questions) according to their level which they can solve in around 3 months logging periodically to the website, plus I need teachers to log and look at the reports. Now, I'm a graphic designer myself so my skills are mostly html5 and css3 and I know some php (edit existing ones only) and javascript (jquery) as well, most people tell me that I need a CMS to do the tool but all I find is CMS for display like blogs or news websites which I think aren't useful for me because the website is already made in html and css3 only (I need to add an extra page for the tool) I understand I need to create users and give them special rights according to what type of user they are and I also understand that I need a database where I can store all my questions. Rather than having load of categories like, for example, Builder, Electrician, Carpenter etc, we would like to have one word more general categories.
