  • What could a kernel mode driver be possibly useful to?

    This might sound weird but there's an explanation for my question: I want to write something to impress a potential recruiter, and I want (to strenghten my skills) to create a program which should communicate with kernel mode driver(s). I'm not starting from a goal and trying to design the system to achieve it, I'm doing the opposite: designing the system and trying to justify it with a meaningful goal. So here comes the question: what could a kernel mode driver be possibly useful to? The answers that come to my mind right now are: I might want to communicate with hardware (not really my case, it's a software project mainly) I might want to mess around with the OS (security/hooking?) ?? I need some other examples like those

My understanding of their most commonly accepted usage (simplified): Business Analyst: Main role is eliciting the users' needs Software Developer Main role is to design, build and test a software solution answering the needs I'm wondering: "How we should call somebody whose role is to do both of the roles above?" Is this a common job title? And is trying to find people with these broadness of skills realistic, difficult?     I have an acer aspire running net book remix 11.10. the mouse pad freezes up completely and I must use an external mouse. if I reboot the computer the mouse pad will work again. i seem to have this problem happen in the middle of either using firefox or a few time while using thunderbird. anyone else having this problem. an external mouse works but scrolling is choppy or it scrolls part of the way down a page and then jumps to the top again. I don't recall having this problem after upgrading to 11.10 so I think it is related to an update. my Linux skills are limited.

    I want to write a game as my final year diploma project.(I'm a 4th-year-student now so I've got a year and several months). But I don't know what to choose: either write my own game engine using DirectX9(10)(I don't like OpenGL) or use OGRE + PhysX(Don't like Unity) I'm more interested in writing my own game engine(but I wonder if I'll create engine on the same level as even Unreal 1.0 hah) but on the other side with PhysX I'll have advanced physics in my game and with OGRE I'll have good grahics. For 3d models I want to use Maya. What do you advise me to choose? As for me I've got a little DirectX experience,not bad C++ programming skills(but not expert's) and a little knowledge of Maya. My English isn't perfect either hah...
