  • what can cause large discrepancy between minor GC time and total pause time?

    We have a latency-sensitive application, and are experiencing some GC-related pauses we don't fully understand. We occasionally have a minor GC that results in application pause times that are much longer than the reported GC time itself. Here is an example log snippet: 485377.257: [GC 485378.857: [ParNew: 105845K-621K(118016K), 0.0028070 secs] 136492K-31374K(1035520K), 0.0028720 secs] [Times: user=0.01 sys=0.00, real=1.61 secs] Total time for which application threads were stopped: 1.6032830 seconds The total pause time here is orders of magnitude longer than the reported GC time. These are isolated and occasional events: the immediately preceding and succeeding minor GC events do not show this large discrepancy. The process is running on a dedicated machine, with lots of free memory, 8 cores, running Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES Release 4 Update 8 with kernel 2.6.9-89.0.1EL-smp. We have observed this with (32 bit) JVM versions 1.6.0_13 and 1.6.0_18. We are running with these flags: -server -ea -Xms512m -Xmx512m -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:NewSize=128m -XX:MaxNewSize=128m -XX:+PrintGCDetails -XX:+PrintGCTimeStamps -XX:+PrintGCApplicationStoppedTime -XX:-TraceClassUnloading Can anybody offer some explanation as to what might be going on here, and/or some avenues for further investigation?

  • Using an objects date (without time) for a table header instead of an objects date and time (iphone)

    I've been working on an iphone project and have run into an issue. Currently In the table view where it displays all the objects, I use headers based on the objects datePerformed field. The only problem is that my code apparently creates a header that contains both the date and time resulting in objects not being grouped solely by their date as I intended, but rather based on their date and time. I'm not sure if it matters, but when an object is created I use a date picker to pick the date, but not the time. I was wondering if anyone could give me any suggestions or advice.   • Java - A better to run code for a period of time

    I need to run some code for a predefined length of time, when the time is up it needs to stop. Currently I am using a TimerTask to allow the code to execute for a set amount of time but this is causing endless threads to be created by the code and is just simply not efficient. Is there a better alternative?     So I've seen things like WordPress and FCKEditor, and basically a bunch of stuff that uses external code that I can't see or edit. Whenever I ask about editing and saving the content of a page in real time I just get referenced to an API or I get handed code that only changes the page until it's reloaded. What I want to know is how do I code it myself? I want to add real time content editing to a page without the use of someone else's code. I've checked out code for various forums and wikipedia and whatnot, and all of it references code I don't have access to. Is this a thing? Can I edit a page in real time? I thought of writing the edited text to a file on the server, and then when they click save, reading it back into the code to the section they were editing, but I don't know how to do that or if it's even possible. As a side note, I'm very new to html, but not new to coding. EDIT: The structure can be very much like Wikipedia, it doesn't have to be real time, it just has to work

For example, say I want to replace the standard printf function with something new, I can write my own version and compile it into a shared library, then put "LD_PRELOAD=/my/library.so" in the environment before running my executable. But let's say that instead, I want to change that linkage from within the program itself. Surely that must be possible... right?

  • Storing date and time as epoch vs native datetime format in the database

    For most of my tasks I find it much easier to work with date and time in the epoch format: it's trivial to calculate timespan or determine if some event happened before or after another, I don't have to deal with time-zone issues if the data comes from different geographical sources, in case of scripting languages what I usually get from database when I request a datetime-typed column is a string that I need to parse in order to work with it. This list can go on, but for me in order to keep my code portable that's enough to ditch database's native datetime format and store date and time as integer. What do you guys think?

I want to run a program so that, for each file, it extracts the data pertaining to a particular given date and writes to a file. I will not face any problem in writing into directory operations. I am trying to get around, to form a to do a search and extract operation. I dont know, how to do it, would like to have some idea. Thanks Soham

    iam using swf file upload control in my application developed in asp.net & c#.net. i am having a dropdown box with file types like jpeg,.xls ,.txt etc. so when i select particular file type in the dropdown and clicking on the button would open a filedialog showing only the files of the type selected in the dropdown. The problem is that when i select "jpeg" for the first time file dialog shows only jpeg files. when i select ".xls" next time it shows again the prevoiusly selected jpeg files and not currently selected ".xls". but while debugging it was found the file type definition in the swf code has been changed to .xls . can any one guide why the file upload control not mapping the selected file for the second time

    I'm starting a project which I think will be particularly suited to MongoDB due to the speed and scalability it affords. The module I'm currently interested in is to do with real-time chat. If I was to do this in a traditional RDBMS I'd split it out into: Channel (A channel has many users) User (A user has one channel but many messages) Message (A message has a user) The the purpose of this use case, I'd like to assume that there will be typically 5 channels active at one time, each handling at most 5 messages per second. Specific queries that need to be fast: Fetch new messages (based on an bookmark, time stamp maybe, or an incrementing counter?) Post a message to a channel Verify that a user can post in a channel Bearing in mind that the document limit with MongoDB is 4mb, how would you go about designing the schema? What would yours look like? Are there any gotchas I should watch out for?

    Hi, I have 2 tables in the database with the following attributes: Booking ======= booking_id booking_start booking_end resource_booked =============== booking_id resource_id The second table is an associative entity between "Booking" and "Resource" (i.e., 1 booking can contain many resources). Attributes booking_start and booking_end are timestamps with date and time in it. May I know how I might be able to find out for each resource_id (resource_booked) if the date/time overlaps or clashes with other bookings of similar resource_id? I was doodling the answer on paper, pictorially, to see if it might help me visualize how I could solve this and I got this: Joining the 2 tables (Booking, Booked_resource) into one table with the 4 attributes needed.     I'm using Twitter4j and the Android Facebook SDK to fetch status messages. With Twitter4J I get real-time notifications whenever a new status has been added to the stream via StatusListener (Twitter4J). In the Facebook SDK I cannot find a similar way, I can only fetch entire streams over and over again in a fixed time interval using RequestListener (Facebook SDK) as far as I see it. Is there any way to get notified of new statuses in realtime with the Facebook SDK in a similar way as with Twitter4J?     Hi! I'm receiving a datetime from a SOAP webservice without timzone information. Hence, the Axis deserializer assumes UTC. However, the datetime really is in Sydney time. I've solved the problem by substracting the timezone offset: Calendar trade_date = trade.getTradeDateTime(); TimeZone est_tz = TimeZone.getTimeZone("Australia/Sydney"); long millis = trade_date.getTimeInMillis() - est_tz.getRawOffset(); trade_date.setTimeZone( est_tz ); trade_date.setTimeInMillis( millis ); However, I'm not sure if this solution also takes daylight saving into account. I think it should, because all operations are on UTC time. Any experiences with manipulating time in Java? Better ideas on how to solve this problem?
