• Advice needed: What tech expertise do I need to accomplish my goal?

  I have a business plan & money to hire a developer - the essentials involve simple online games for children (played via traditional computer over the internet) such that their scores are uploaded to a database that can be viewed via a nice portal. What I don't know is: what technologies I would want my developer to know (the only somewhat unusual requirement I have is that the games have relatively accurate timing of keypresses/mouse presses) how much I should expect to pay (in general, what is the appropriate range) how many hours a program of the complexity of a simple tower defense -type game should take to develop (to be clear, the idea is not to implement TD, but rather other games of similar complexity) whether I should go with capable acquaintances, some online kind of online web-dev bidding site, or just try to find a capable undergraduate at the local university who I can wow with his/her first big paycheck, how I should communicate the software's specifications to my hired developer... Is there a standard I should be using? whether I should hire a webdev consultant for a few hours to help me answer these questions, instead of asking stackoverflow Thanks for any advice!

• Which design pattern to manage windows?

  Hello, I am using .NET 2.0 & C# to develop a WinForm Mdi application. It will have a Main Window and a lot of mdi windows. I am thinking I should use which design pattern to manage mdi windows. Because I want only one instance for each window, if window is existed, I will show it on top, & otherwise I will create and show it. Note: a mdi window is opened from Menus of Main Window or open from another mdi window. An example is very good. Update: Menu's status is depended on mdi window's status. Ex: If Window 'A' is openned - menu 'A' - disabled. When window 'A' is closed - I update menu 'A' status to Enabled. Thanks.

• User Interface functionality modelling languages?

  I am looking for a UI functionality modelling language (UML-alike "thing", but for user interfaces) that is already accepted and maybe has its design patterns and handles the problem better than state or activity diagram. (If there is no such thing I'm planning to develop that BTW :)) This question came to mind as a result of a discovery that UML and its diagrams fails at describing complicated UI functionality with event-driven flow of execution (ie. javascript/jQuery big projects) EDIT: I've been thinking of using BPMN but It was not created for this purpose. • Duplicate a Drupal installation from one server to another

  Hello. I have been developing a Drupal 6 site on my PC using XAMPP. I'm done now, and everything looks peachy. Problem is, I need to put all my content (including custom modules and themes) up onto a staging server which only has a fresh Drupal 6 install on it. I can't imagine having to set up all my custom content types and whatnot all over again on the staging server. So I ask, how does one go about doing what I need to do? Which is essentially duplicating my Drupal install from my PC, to the staging server. The staging server is running Linux, and I develop on a Windows PC, if that helps. Thanks in advance.

• which collection should I use

  Hello, I have a number of custom objects of type X. X has a number of parameters and must be unique in the collection. (I created my own equals method based on the custom parameters to examine this) In each object of type x, I have a list of objects y. I want to add/remove/modify easily an object y. For example: To write the add method, it would be something like add(objTypeX, objTypeY) I would check or the collections already has a objTypeX. If so: i would add the objTypeY to the already existing objTypeX else: i would create objTypeX and add objTypeY to this object. To modify an objTypeY, it would be something like(objTypeX, objTypeY, newobjTypeY) I would get objTypeX out of the collections and modify objTypeY to newobjTypeY Which collections should I use? I tried with hashset but i can get a specific object out of the list, without run down the list till I find that object. I develop this in vb.net 3.5

• Blackberry apps: Native or webapps?

  Dear all, I have read the Blackberry documentation and it is possible to push a notification from a webapp. I am planning to create a Blackberry application that compliments to our webapps. But I am still left in the middle whether to develop a webapp or native Blackberry app. I have also look at how a webapp runs on Blackberry browser and it looks smooth. From your experience does the native app offer something that the webapp doesn't? Bonus question, is Facebook and Twitter app on Blackberry a native app or a webapp? If it is a webapp, is it possible to make a launcher for the application on Blackberry? Thanks for your help.

• How do I set my development web browser in VS2010?

  I don't like to use IE for my system default web browser. but I do want to set IE as my browser in VS2010 because it works a little nicer for debugging and I like to develop to the lowest common denominator. (jab, lol)... anyhow, can I default to debugging against IE? I know in VS2008 you just had to "Browse With..." on an .aspx page. But that option doesn't exist in VS2010 RC. What gives?

• How do you protect code from leaking outside?

  Besides open-sourcing your project and legislation, are there ways to prevent, or at least minimize the damages of code leaking outside your company/group? We obviously can't block Internet access (to prevent emailing the code) because programmer's need their references. We also can't block peripheral devices (USB, Firewire, etc.) The code matters most when it has some proprietary algorithms and in-house developed knowledge (as opposed to regular routine code to draw GUIs, connect to databases, etc.), but some applications (like accounting software and CRMs) are just that: complex collections of routine code that are simple to develop in principle, but will take years to write from scratch. This is where leaked code will come in handy to competitors. As far as I see it, preventing leakage relies almost entirely on human process. What do you think? What precautions and measures are you taking? And has code leakage affected you before?

Requirements: Voice quality or better Intended for low power wifi transmission Broad support in existing software and devices (ie, windows media player, quicktime, vlc, iPhone, Android, etc). Royalty/patent free, or cheap to license Preferences: Low overhead TCP/IP based streaming protocol Voice grade codec (easy to implement in software, no DSP, 32bit CPU if needed) Would be nice if it supported HTML5 browsers, but is there any codec (such as raw) that is supported by the latest browsers that is lower overhead than MP3? Therefore: What are the relevant streaming protocols I should be looking at? What are the relevant codecs I should be looking at? What transport streams should I be looking at? What am I missing, or where else should I be looking for this type of need?

• Looking for "tech call" tracking software.

  The company I work for is looking for the best way to track "tech calls". We would most likely develop in house using vb.net, but possibly could look at using some open source vb.net software already out there. We will probably want to track just the basic info like client, datetime, length of call & a notes section about the call. One idea that has floated around is recording everyone's calls, watching a directory for new files and popping up a form so the user can enter the info when the call is over. We really don't want to spend a lot of time tracking/logging these calls, something quick & simple. Anybody have a good idea or solution that they have used before?

• CodeIgniter's XSS Protection is removing <script> tags from user inputs... but I don't want it to!

  Hey folks, CodeIgniter is brilliant but I'm using it to develop a site where users need to be able to share their code for websites. Unfortunately, CodeIgniter has been doing the "right" thing by removing <script> tags from my user's inputs into the database, so when it's returned data looks like this: [removed] User's data [removed] However, I need my site to DISPLAY script tags but obviously not PARSE them. How can I get CodeIgniter or PHP to return <script> tags, but still sanitise them for the database and return them without them executing? Thanks! • How much should I charge for Rails programming?

  I have been asked to quote an hourly rate for freelance programming for a Rails project. Although it would be my first paid project on Rails, I know the technology well from personal projects and have a decade of professional programming experience. This would be my first freelance project ever, so I have no idea how to find out what the going rate for my services should be. Obviously, if I quote a rate that is too high, they may choose someone else - too low and I may feel cheated later on. Any suggestions? Update: I am in NYC and the project is scheduled for 6 months to a year (but this seems unrealistic - I think it will be a multi-year project). I would develop on site (at a corporate location) with one other developer and the project would consist of about 200 custom-built pages initially. 10 hour days with weekends and additional overtime as required. The customer has given no information about how much they will pay - "a competitive rate" - they want me to start the discussion.

But it seems to me that samples in articles and videos are very easy. I think that it's easy to learn how to apply these patterns when you can look on some projects. So I'd like to look on real projects(Winforms/WPF), which use MVC, MVP or MVVM. Could you provide me links to sources of such projects? • Appcelerator Vs. MonoTouch - Which one is best for a .NET developer ?

  Hi All, I'm a .NET developer with 10 years experience developing Web & Mobile Apps. I'm looking to branch into iPhone (and possibly Android) development. I'm looking at two products: Appcelerator Titanium (http://www.appcelerator.com/) and MonoTouch (http://monotouch.net/) I like MonoTouch because of it's standing in the Mono development communitity and it's C#. In saying that Appcelerator looks very straight forward using HTML and Javascript and targets Android too (which is overtaking the iPhone). The apps I'm looking to develop are line of business applications with data entry, syncing with back office, etc. Can anyone give their opinion on the pro's / con's of using these tools or any experiences. • System.Drawing.Image for Images in Business Objects?

  Hi Folks I'd like to store an image in a business object. In MSDN I saw that the System.Drawing-namespace provides lots of GDI+-features, etc. Is it okay to store an Image in an System.Drawing.Image class in business layer (which is a class library "only"), and thus including a reference to System.Drawing too? I slightly feel just kind of bad doing that, 'cause it seems like I have UI-specific references in business code. Moreover, the code could become unnecessarily platform-dependant (though this is only a problem in theory, because we do not develop for multiple platforms). Both the examples host visual studio's windows forms designer to provide form-design service in their respective applications. My question is - Does it imply any licensing issue with Microsoft for directly hosting their Visual Studio Forms designer in my own application ? If there's any such licensing implication - then how does Sharp-Develop do this ?

• Where to add the PHP script and MYSQL Dump code in the LAMP server?

  Hi, I dont know if this is the right place to ask this question. But as time is limited and here I have always got the right answers I am asking it away. I want to setup a login page on a local server so as to communicate with it via android. As time permits, I googled and found out the necessary php script and mySQL code needed for the same. • What language/API to use for a standalone live-input audio visualizer app?

  I develop with Actionscript and was glad to see that AIR 2.0 was going to give access to mic input data. I planned to use this to create a visualizer set to the tempo of the incoming live audio. After doing a few days of google research it seems unlikely that it will be possible to analyze the data of the mic input in Flash/AIR. If anyone has ideas on how I can achieve this in AIR please let me know. (I'm open to workarounds.) That being said, I don't want to give up on the idea so I'm interested in suggestions for other language/API to use. My requirements for the app are: Run on OSX Two windows - one that can go fullscreen while the other(controller GUI) stays put Able to access live mic input data I've done reading on FFT and understand what needs to be done on the sound side so no need to help with that.

• Using Accelerometer in Wiimote for Physics Practicals

  I have to develop some software in my school to utilize the accelerometer in the Wiimote for recording data from experiments, for example finding the acceleration and velocity of a moving object. I understand how the accelerometer values will be used but I am sort of stuck on the programming front. There is a set of things that I would like to do: Live streaming of data from the Wiimote via bluetooth Use the accelerometer values to find velocity and displacment via integration Plot a set of results Avoid the use of the infrared sensor on the Wiimote Please can anyone give me their thoughts on how to go about this. Also it would be great if people could direct me to existing projects that utizlise the wiimote. Also can someone suggest what would be the best programming language to use for this. My current bet is on using Visual basic. Any sort of help is greatly appretiated.

• NDIS or TDI for packet redirection to a local proxy

  I need to develop a transparent filter to redirect outgoing HTTP packets to a local proxy, to do transparent content filtering. Which is the best technology to do it, TDI or NDIS IM? My main constraint is to avoid conflicts with antivirus software, which also do some kind of packet redirection to inspect HTTP content (I don't know whether antivirus programs use TDI, NDIS IM, or both). Rather than writing the driver myself, actually, I'm also considering two commercial SDKs for packet filtering/modification: one uses a TDI driver while the other uses a NDIS IM driver, so that's the origin of my question (I was only aware of NDIS IM, before looking at the two SDKs).

• Programming on Leopard for iPhone OS 3.1.3

  Hey, I got Leopard with XCode 3.1 and SDK 3.0, when opening the organizer and trying to debug on my ipod I received "The version of iPhone OS on "..." does not match any of the versions of iPhone OS supported for development with this copy of xCode...". It tells me with my xCode I can only develop for iPhone OS 3.0 or less, so I downloaded the new xCode + SDK installation bundle, knowing the SDK can't be installed on Leopard. In the installation it tells me "If you don't want to install the SDK, press disagree", and so I did, but in the next screen he forces me to choose a drive for the SDK, and then says "you can't install the SDK on leopard system", and I can't pass this screen. My question is: is it even possible to program on Leopard for iPhone OS 3.1.3? I really want to debug my apps on my iPod (framework 3.1.3, 3G) Thanks ahead!! By the way: I can't so simply upgrade to snow leopard because it's a hackintosh, so I prefer a different way..
