  • Binary serialization/de-serialization in C++ and C#

    - by 6pack kid
Hello. I am working on a distributed application which has two components. One is written in standard C++ (not managed C++) and the other one is written in C#. Both are communicating via a message bus. I have a situation in which I need to pass objects from C++ to C# application and for this I need to serialize those objects in C++ and de-serialize them in C# (something like marshaling/un-marshaling in .NET). I need to perform this serialization in binary and not in XML (due to performance reasons). I have used Boost.Serialization to do this when both ends were implemented in C++ but now that I have a .NET application on one end, Boost.Serialization is not a viable solution. I am looking for a solution that allows me to perform (de)serialization across C++ and .NET boundary i.e., cross platform binary serialization. I know I can implement the (de)serialization code in a C++ dll and use P/Invoke in the .NET application, but I want to keep that as a last resort. Also, I want to know if I use some standard like gzip, will that be efficient? Are there any other alternatives to gzip? What are the pros/cons of them? Thanks

  • Slow XML-RPC in Windows 7 with XML-RPC.NET

    - by Emre Sahin
I'm considering to use XML-RPC.NET to communicate with a Linux XML-RPC server written in Python. I have tried a sample application (MathApp) from Cook Computing's XML-RPC.NET but it took 30 seconds for the app to add two numbers within the same LAN with server. I have also tried to run a simple client written in Python on Windows 7 to call the same server and it responded in 5 seconds. The machine has 4 GB of RAM with comparable processing power so this is not an issue. Then I tried to call the server from a Windows XP system with Java and PHP. Both responses were pretty fast, almost instantly. The server was responding quickly on localhost too, so I don't think the latency arise from server. My googling returned me some problems regarding Windows' use of IPv6 but our call to server does include IPv4 address (not hostname) in the same subnet. Anyways I turned off IPv6 but nothing changed. Are there any more ways to check for possible causes of latency?

  • Best ways to teach a beginner to program?

    - by Justin Standard
Original Question I am currently engaged in teaching my brother to program. He is a total beginner, but very smart. (And he actually wants to learn). I've noticed that some of our sessions have gotten bogged down in minor details, and I don't feel I've been very organized. (But the answers to this post have helped a lot.) What can I do better to teach him effectively? Is there a logical order that I can use to run through concept by concept? Are there complexities I should avoid till later? The language we are working with is Python, but advice in any language is welcome. How to Help If you have good ones please add the following in your answer: Beginner Exercises and Project Ideas Resources for teaching beginners Screencasts / blog posts / free e-books Print books that are good for beginners Please describe the resource with a link to it so I can take a look. • Standard Apache (not OHS) with mod_osso for Single Signon

    - by Markos Fragkakis
The mod_osso.so (the Apache plugin for Single Signon, provided by Oracle) is distributed with the Oracle HTTP Server (OHS), which is essentially a modified Apache. I am trying to use it on the standard Apache HTTP Server, and have not managed to get it to work. Configuration: Apache 2.2.15 OHS from the Oracle Web Tier Tools 11.1.1.2.0 Red Hat Linux 64 bit I have: Included the module in the modules directory (copied from corresponding modules dir in OHS) Included the libraries libiau.so and libclutsh.so.11.1 from Oracle Home. The absence of these libraries produced an error on starting Apache. Produced a osso.conf using the ssoreg.sh tool provided with OID (the LDAP implementation of Oracle) Created the required mod_osso.conf file, which I included in httpd.conf. The error I get when starting Apache is this: # /opt/apache_sso/bin/apachectl -k start httpd: Syntax error on line 1075 of /opt/apache_sso/conf/httpd.conf: Syntax error on line 1 of /opt/apache_sso/conf/mod_osso.conf: Cannot load /opt/apache_sso/modules/mod_osso.so into server: /opt/apache_sso/modules/mod_osso.so: undefined symbol: _audit_authentication_request My mod_osso.conf: # cat /opt/apache_sso/conf/mod_osso.conf LoadModule osso_module modules/mod_osso.so <IfModule mod_osso.c> OssoIdleTimeout off OssoIpCheck on OssoConfigFile conf/osso.conf #Location is the URI you want to protect <Location /myapp> require valid-user #OHS 11g AuthType Osso #OHS 10g AuthType Basic AuthType Osso </Location> </IfModule> Has anyone made mod_osso work on standard Apache HTTP server?

  • Reverse engineering and patching a DirectX game?

    - by yodaj007
Background I am playing Imperishable Night, one of the Touhou series of games. The shoot button is 'z', moving slower is 'shift', and the arrow keys move. Unfortunately for me, using shift-z ghosts my right arrow key, so I can't move to the right while shooting. This ghosting happens in all applications, and switching keyboards fixes it. Goal I want to locate in the disassembled code the directx function that gets the keyboard input and compares it against the 'z' key, and change that key to 'a'. I'm considering this a fun project. Assuming the size of the scan codes are the same, this should be fairly simple. And because the executable is only 400k, maybe this will provide a unique opportunity for me to explore the dark side of the computing underworld (kidding). Relevant experience I have some experience with coding in assembly, but not in the disassembly of such. I have no experience with the DirectX apis. Question I need some guidance. I've found a listing of directx keyboard scan codes, and a program called PEExplorer that looks like it will do what I need. Is there a means by which I can turn some of the assembly with C function calls so it's more easily read? I will need to locate where the game retrieves the currently pressed keys, compares those against a list, and it's that list I need to modify. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

  • Code Golf: Leibniz formula for Pi

    - by Greg Beech
I recently posted one of my favourite interview whiteboard coding questions in "What's your more controversial programming opinion", which is to write a function that computes Pi using the Leibniz formula. It can be approached in a number of different ways, and the exit condition takes a bit of thought, so I thought it might make an interesting code golf question. Shortest code wins! Given that Pi can be estimated using the function 4 * (1 - 1/3 + 1/5 - 1/7 + ...) with more terms giving greater accuracy, write a function that calculates Pi to within 0.00001. Edit: 3 Jan 2008 As suggested in the comments I changed the exit condition to be within 0.00001 as that's what I really meant (an accuracy 5 decimal places is much harder due to rounding and so I wouldn't want to ask that in an interview, whereas within 0.00001 is an easier to understand and implement exit condition). Also, to answer the comments, I guess my intention was that the solution should compute the number of iterations, or check when it had done enough, but there's nothing to prevent you from pre-computing the number of iterations and using that number. I really asked the question out of interest to see what people would come up with.

  • LINQ-to-SQL: ExecuteQuery(Type, String) populates one field, but not the other

    - by Daniel Schaffer
I've written an app that I use as an agent to query data from a database and automatically load it into my distributed web cache. I do this by specifying an sql query and a type in a configuration. The code that actually does the querying looks like this: List<Object> result = null; try { result = dc.ExecuteQuery(elementType, entry.Command).OfType<Object>().ToList(); } catch (Exception ex) { HandleException(ex, WebCacheAgentLogEvent.DatabaseExecutionError); continue; } elementType is a System.Type created from the type specified in the configuration (using Type.GetType()), and entry.Command is the SQL query. The specific entity type I'm having an issue with looks like this: public class FooCount { [Column(Name = "foo_id")] public Int32 FooId { get; set; } [Column(Name = "count")] public Int32 Count { get; set; } } The SQL query looks like this: select foo_id as foo_id, sum(count) as [count] from foo_aggregates group by foo_id order by foo_id For some reason, when the query is executed, the "Count" property ends up populated, but not the "FooId" property. I tried running the query myself, and the correct column names are returned, and the column names match up with what I've specified in my mapping attributes. Help!

  • Navigating through a sea of hype

    - by wouldLikeACrystalBall
This is a vague, open question, so if you have no interest in these, please leave now. A few years ago it seemed everyone thought the death of desktop software was imminent. Web applications were the future. Everyone would move to cloud-based software-as-a-service systems, and developing applications for specific end-user platforms like Windows would soon become something of a ghetto. Joel's "How Microsoft Lost the API War" was but one of many such pieces sounding the death knell for this way of software development. Flash-forward to 2010, and the hype is all around mobile devices, particularly the iPhone. Software-as-a-Service vendors--even small ones such as YCombinator startups--go out of their way to build custom applications for the iPhone and other smart phone devices; applications that can be quite sophisticated, that run only on specific hardware and software architectures and are thus inherently incompatible. Now some of you are probably thinking, "Well, only the decline of desktop software was predicted; mobile devices aren't desktops." But the term was used by those predicting its demise to mean laptops also, and really any platform capable of running a browser. What was promised was a world where HTML and related standards would supplant native applications and their inherent difficulties. We would all code to the browser, not the OS. But here we are in 2010 with the AppStore bulging and development for the iPad just revving up. A few days ago, I saw someone on Hacker News claim that the future of computing was entirely in small, portable devices. Apparently the future is underpowered, requires dexterous thumbs and induces near-sightedness. How do those who so vehemently asserted one thing now assert the opposite with equal vehemence, without making even the slightest admission of error? And further, how are we as developers supposed to sift through all of this? I bought into the whole web-standards utopianism that was in vogue back in '06-'07 and now feel like it was a mistake. Is there some formula one can apply rather than a mere appeal to experience?

  • code review: Is it subjective or objective(quantifiable) ?

    - by Ram
I am putting together some guidelines for code reviews. We do not have one formal process yet, and trying to formalize it. And our team is geographically distributed We are using TFS for source control (used it for tasks/bug tracking/project management as well, but migrated that to JIRA) with VS2008 for development. What are the things you look for when doing a code review ? These are the things I came up with Enforce FXCop rules (we are a Microsoft shop) Check for performance (any tools ?) and security (thinking about using OWASP- code crawler) and thread safety Adhere to naming conventions The code should cover edge cases and boundaries conditions Should handle exceptions correctly (do not swallow exceptions) Check if the functionality is duplicated elsewhere method body should be small(20-30 lines) , and methods should do one thing and one thing only (no side effects/ avoid temporal coupling -) Do not pass/return nulls in methods Avoid dead code Document public and protected methods/properties/variables What other things do you generally look for ? I am trying to see if we can quantify the review process (it would produce identical output when reviewed by different persons) Example: Saying "the method body should be no longer than 20-30 lines of code" as opposed to saying "the method body should be small" Or is code review very subjective ( and would differ from one reviewer to another ) ? The objective is to have a marking system (say -1 point for each FXCop rule violation,-2 points for not following naming conventions,2 point for refactoring etc) so that developers would be more careful when they check in their code. This way, we can identify developers who are consistently writing good/bad code. The goal is to have the reviewer spend about 30 minutes max, to do a review (I know this is subjective, considering the fact that the changeset/revision might include multiple files/huge changes to the existing architecture etc , but you get the general idea, the reviewer should not spend days reviewing someone's code) What other objective/quantifiable system do you follow to identify good/bad code written by developers? • [OffTopic] PhD is it worth it?

    - by Zenzen
So I'll be graduating next year (hopefully) and lately I started thinking about getting a PhD in computer science (to be more precise I was thinking about something related to "distributed systems", don't have any specific topics yet in mind), but is it really worth it? A PhD course here lasts 4 years and is free IF you're doing the "normal one" (which means you have class from monday to friday) OR you have to pay if you want to study on the weekends. So I've been thinking about getting a normal full time job (as a JEE programmer) and doing my PhD during the weekends OR doing the normal PhD course (mon-fri) and getting a part time job as a software dev (the main reason I want a job is simple - I need to eat). That would give me practical working experience and theoretical knowledge+a PhD, but it would also mean working 7days a week from 9 to 5 for 4 years straight (sounds like an overkill). Is it, job wise, really worth getting a PhD? As an employer do you prefer people with PhDs or MScs? This might be kinda important - I'm not from the US or western europe, how are PhDs from other countries (I am graduating one of the best, if not the best, school in my country but it's still a central european country...) seen? Are they useless? I won't hide it - after graduation I am thinking about moving abroad.

  • System.Web.Caching vs. Enterprise Library Caching Block

    - by ESV
For a .NET component that will be used in both web applications and rich client applications, there seem to be two obvious options for caching: System.Web.Caching or the Ent. Lib. Caching Block. What do you use? Why? System.Web.Caching Is this safe to use outside of web apps? I've seen mixed information, but I think the answer is maybe-kind-of-not-really. a KB article warning against 1.0 and 1.1 non web app use The 2.0 page has a comment that indicates it's OK: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.caching.cache(VS.80).aspx Scott Hanselman is creeped out by the notion The 3.5 page includes a warning against such use Rob Howard encouraged use outside of web apps I don't expect to use one of its highlights, SqlCacheDependency, but the addition of CacheItemUpdateCallback in .NET 3.5 seems like a Really Good Thing. Enterprise Library Caching Application Block other blocks are already in use so the dependency already exists cache persistence isn't necessary; regenerating the cache on restart is OK Some cache items should always be available, but be refreshed periodically. For these items, getting a callback after an item has been removed is not very convenient. It looks like a client will have to just sleep and poll until the cache item is repopulated. Memcached for Win32 + .NET client What are the pros and cons when you don't need a distributed cache?

  • nth ugly number

    - by Anil Katti
Numbers whose only prime factors are 2, 3 or 5 are called ugly numbers. Example: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 15, ... 1 can be considered as 2^0. I am working on finding nth ugly number. Note that these numbers are extremely sparsely distributed as n gets large. I wrote a trivial program that computes if a given number is ugly or not. For n 500 - it became super slow. I tried using memoization - observation: ugly_number * 2, ugly_number * 3, ugly_number * 5 are all ugly. Even with that it is slow. I tried using some properties of log - since that will reduce this problem from multiplication to addition - but, not much luck yet. Thought of sharing this with you all. Any interesting ideas? Using a concept similar to "Sieve of Eratosthenes" (thanks Anon) for (int i(2), uglyCount(0); ; i++) { if (i % 2 == 0) continue; if (i % 3 == 0) continue; if (i % 5 == 0) continue; uglyCount++; if (uglyCount == n - 1) break; } i is the nth ugly number. Even this is pretty slow. I am trying to find 1500th ugly number.

  • Resources related to data-mining and gaming on social networks

    - by darren
Hi all I'm interested in the problem of patterning mining among players of social networking games. For example detecting cheaters of a game, given a company's user database. So far I have been following the usual recipe for a data mining project: construct a data warehouse that aggregates significant information select a classifier, and train it with a subsectio of records from the warehouse validate classifier with another test set lather, rinse, repeat Surprisingly, I've found very little in this area regarding literature, best practices, etc. I am hoping to crowdsource the information gathering problem here. Specifically what I'm looking for: What classifiers have worked will for this type of pattern mining (it seems highly temporal, users playing games, users receiving rewards, users transferring prizes etc). Are there any highly agreed upon attributes specific to social networking / gaming data? What is a practical amount of information that should be considered? One problem I've run into is data overload, where queries and data cleansing may take days to complete. Related to point above, what hardware resources are required to produce results? I've found it difficult to estimate the amount of computing power I will require for production use. It has become apparent that a white box in the corner does not have enough horse-power for such a project. Are companies generally resorting to cloud solutions? Are they buying clusters? Basically, any resources (theoretical, academic, or practical) about implementing a social networking / gaming pattern-mining program would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

  • wcf configuration for this code

    - by user208081
I have the following code and would like to convert a lot of code into configuration settings for WCF. As you can see, the code is using wshttpbinding. I appreciate any help on this. try { // Provides a unique network address that a client uses to communicate with a service endpoint. EndpointAddress endpointAddress = new EndpointAddress(new Uri(FAXServiceSettings.Default.FAXReceiveServiceURL)); // Specify the protocols, transports, and message encoders used for communication between the client and the service. // WSHttpBinding represents an interoperable binding that supports distributed transactions and secure, reliable sessions. // Spefically, SOAP message security is enabled for secure transmission of the message content. WSHttpBinding clientBinding = new WSHttpBinding(SecurityMode.Message); clientBinding.OpenTimeout = TimeSpan.FromSeconds(FAXServiceSettings.Default.FAXReceiveServiceOpenTimeoutInSeconds); clientBinding.SendTimeout = TimeSpan.FromSeconds(FAXServiceSettings.Default.FAXReceiveServiceOpenTimeoutInSeconds); // Use the ChannelFactory to enable the creation of channels to the binding and endpoint. using (ChannelFactory<IReceiveFAX> channelFactory = new ChannelFactory<IReceiveFAX>(clientBinding, endpointAddress)) { // Creates a channel of a specified type to a specified endpoint address. CloseChannel((channel as IClientChannel)); } finally { // Explicitly dispose of the channel using IDisposable interface. DisposeOfChannel((channel as IDisposable)); channel = null; } } // This method causes a CommunicationObject to gracefully transition from any state, other than the Closed state, into the Closed state. • Problem with Tapestry palette's arrow icons in IE8

    - by JellyHead
I'm using Tapestry to create pages for a web app, and have been using the palette component to add/delete items to/from a group. The page looks great in Firefox (Tapestry seems biased towards Firefox), but my customers will all be using Internet Explorer (any versions from 6, 7, & 8) and in IE8, the disabled arrow buttons look awful. In Firefox, they are faded, using an opacity setting of 25%, but this doesn't work in IE8 and instead you get a faded image with an ugly black border around the image. In tapestry-core's stylesheet (default.css), you have the following for a disabled arrow button. DIV.t-palette-controls BUTTON[disabled] IMG { filter: alpha(opacity = 25); -moz-opacity: .25; } These are clearly out of date, as -moz-opacity is no longer supported by Firefox (use opacity: 25 instead). The problem is with filter: "alpha(opacity = 25);". If I remove this, the arrows look fine in IE8, but they are not faded. I got the magic instruction: -ms-filter:"progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Alpha(opacity=25)"; from various websites, but putting this in does not work either - the arrow icons are ugly again. The icon itself (distributed with Tapestry) just seems to be a regular PNG, but I'm not an expert on image formats, so maybe there's a problem there? Anyone else had this problem?

  • Computed width with decimal values in Firefox, but without decimals in Webkit

    - by jävi
Hello one more time! I have a strange problem working with HTML,CSS in different browsers: Firefox 3.6 and Webkit browsers (Chrome & Safari). My HTML looks like this: <div class="ln-letters"> <a href="#" class="all">ALL</a> <a href="#" class="a">A</a> <a href="#" class="b">B</a> <a href="#" class="c">C</a> </div> And my CSS is... .ln-letters a { font-family: 'Lucida Grande'; font-size:14px; display:block; float:left; padding:0px 7px; border-left:1px solid silver; border-right:none; text-decoration:none; } So as you can guess, each anchor gets a different width depending on its inner text. For example the first element with the text 'ALL' will be bigger (more width) than the others. Now the problem is that in Firefox (using Firebug) I can see that the computed width for the first element is 26.5667px, while in Chrome (using Chrome's developer tools) the computed width for the same element is exactly 27px. Therefore the div.ln-letters ends with different widths in each browser and that is causing me some troubles. Question is: there is any workaround to avoid Firefox computing decimal values? Or the opposite: to force Chrome to compute decimal values? Thank you in advance!

  • SVN Workflow - Chicken Before the Egg - Before merging V1 with V2, I need code from V1 to work on V2

    - by Jake
Hi, Our distributed team (3 internal devs and 3+ external devs) use SVN to manage our codebase for a web site. We have a branch for each minor version (4.1.0, 4.1.1, 4.1.2, etc...). We have a trunk which we merge each version into when we do a release and publish to our site. An example of the problem we are having is thus: A new feature is added, lets call it "Ability to Create A Project" to 4.1.1. Another feature which depends on the one in 4.1.1 is scheduled to go in 4.1.2, called "Ability to Add Tasks to Projects". So, on Monday, we say 4.1.1 is 'closed' and needs to be tested. Our remote developers usually will start working on features/tickets for 4.1.2 at this point. Throughout the week we will test 4.1.1 and fix any bugs and commit them back to 4.1.1. Then, on Friday or so, we will tag 4.1.1, merge it with trunk, and finally, merge it with 4.1.2. But, for the 4-5 days we are testing, 4.1.2 doesn't have the code from 4.1.1 that some of the new features for 4.1.2 depend on. So a dev who is adding the "Ability to Add Tasks To Projects" feature, doesn't have the "Ability to Create a Project" feature to build upon, and has to do some file copy shenanigans to be able to keep working on it. What could/should we do to smooth out this process? P.S. Apologies if this question has been asked before - I did search but couldn't find what I'm looking for.

  • Converting from CVS to SVN to Hg, does 'hg convert' require pointing to an SVN checkout or just a re

    - by Terry
As part of migrating full CVS history to Hg, I've used cvs2svn to create an SVN repo in a local directory. It's first level directory structure is: 2010-04-21 09:39 AM <DIR> . 2010-04-21 09:39 AM <DIR> .. 2010-04-21 09:39 AM <DIR> locks 2010-04-21 09:39 AM <DIR> hooks 2010-04-21 09:39 AM <DIR> conf 2010-04-21 09:39 AM 229 README.txt 2010-04-21 11:45 AM <DIR> db 2010-04-21 09:39 AM 2 format 2 File(s) 231 bytes After setting up hg and the convert extension and attempting the convert, I get the following on convert: C:\>hg convert file://localhost/Users/terry/Desktop/repoSVN assuming destination repoSVN-hg initializing destination repoSVN-hg repository file://localhost/Users/terry/Desktop/repoSVN does not look like a CVS checkout file://localhost/Users/terry/Desktop/repoSVN does not look like a Git repo file://localhost/Users/terry/Desktop/repoSVN does not look like a Subversion repo file://localhost/Users/terry/Desktop/repoSVN is not a local Mercurial repo file://localhost/Users/terry/Desktop/repoSVN does not look like a darcs repo file://localhost/Users/terry/Desktop/repoSVN does not look like a monotone repo file://localhost/Users/terry/Desktop/repoSVN does not look like a GNU Arch repo file://localhost/Users/terry/Desktop/repoSVN does not look like a Bazaar repo file://localhost/Users/terry/Desktop/repoSVN does not look like a P4 repo abort: file://localhost/Users/terry/Desktop/repoSVN: missing or unsupported repository I have TortoiseHg installed. For info, hg version reports: Mercurial Distributed SCM (version 1.4.3) This version of Mercurial seems to have some svn bindings if library.zip in the install is to be believed. Do I need to do a checkout and point hg convert to it for this to work properly?

  • Maven: compile aspectj project containing Java 1.6 source

    - by gmale
What I want to do is fairly easy. Or so you would think. However, nothing is working properly. Requirement: Using maven, compile Java 1.6 project using AspectJ compiler. Note: Our code cannot compile with javac. That is, it fails compilation if aspects are not woven in (because we have aspects that soften exceptions). Questions (based on failed attempts below): Either 1) How do you get maven to run the aspectj:compile goal directly, without ever running compile:compile? 2) How do you specify a custom compilerId that points to your own ajc compiler? Thanks for any and all suggestions. These are the things I've tried that have let to my problem/questions: Attempt 1 (fail): Specify aspectJ as the compiler for the maven-compiler-plugin: org.apache.maven.plugins maven-compiler-plugin 2.2 1.6 1.6 aspectj org.codehaus.plexus plexus-compiler-aspectj 1.8 This fails with the error: org.codehaus.plexus.compiler.CompilerException: The source version was not recognized: 1.6 No matter what version of the plexus compiler I use (1.8, 1.6, 1.3, etc), this doesn't work. I actually read through the source code and found that this compiler does not like source code above Java 1.5. Attempt 2 (fail): Use the aspectJ-maven-plugin attached to the compile and test-compile goals: org.codehaus.mojo aspectj-maven-plugin 1.3 1.6 1.6 compile test-compile This fails when running either: mvn clean test-compile mvn clean compile because it attempts to execute compile:compile before running aspectj:compile. As noted above, our code doesn't compile with javac--the aspects are required. So mvn would need to skip the compile:compile goal altogether and run only aspectj:compile. Attempt 3 (works but unnacceptable): Use the same configuration above but instead run: mvn clean aspectj:compile This works, in that it builds successfully but it's unacceptable in that we need to be able to run the compile goal and the test-compile goal directly (m2eclipse auto-build depends on those goals). Moreover, running it this way would require that we spell out every goal we want along the way (for instance, we need resources distributed and tests to be run and test resources deployed, etc)

  • Why is TransactionScope operation is not valid?

    - by Cragly
I have a routine which uses a recursive loop to insert items into a SQL Server 2005 database The first call which initiates the loop is enclosed within a transaction using TransactionScope. When I first call ProcessItem the myItem data gets inserted into the database as expected. However when ProcessItem is called from either ProcessItemLinks or ProcessItemComments I get the following error. “The operation is not valid for the state of the transaction” I am running this in debug with VS 2008 on Windows 7 and have the MSDTC running to enable distributed transactions. The code below isn’t my production code but is set out exactly the same. The AddItemToDatabase is a method on a class I cannot modify and uses a standard ExecuteNonQuery() which creates a connection then closes and disposes once completed. I have looked at other posting on here and the internet and still cannot resolve this issue. Any help would be much appreciated. using (TransactionScope processItem = new TransactionScope()) { foreach (Item myItem in itemsList) { ProcessItem(myItem); } processItem.Complete(); } private void ProcessItem(Item myItem) { AddItemToDatabase(myItem); ProcessItemLinks(myItem); ProcessItemComments(myItem); } private void ProcessItemLinks(Item myItem) { foreach (Item link in myItem.Links) { ProcessItem(link); } } private void ProcessItemComments(Item myItem) { foreach (Item comment in myItem.Comments) { ProcessItem(comment); } } Here is top part of the stack trace. Unfortunatly I cant show the build up to this point as its company sensative information which I can not disclose. • Silverlight combobox performance issue

    - by Vinzz
    Hi, I'm facing a performance issue with a crowded combobox (5000 items). Rendering of the drop down list is really slow (as if it was computing all items before showing any). Do you have any trick to make this dropdown display lazy? Xaml code: <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal" Width="200" Height="20"> <TextBlock>Test Combo </TextBlock> <ComboBox x:Name="fooCombo" Margin="5,0,0,0"></ComboBox> </StackPanel> </Grid> code behind: public MainPage() { InitializeComponent(); List<string> li = new List<string>(); int Max = 5000; for (int i = 0; i < Max; ++i) li.Add("Item - " + i); fooCombo.ItemsSource = li; }

  • Parsing string, with Boost Spirit 2, to fill data in user defined struct

    - by Surya
I'm using Boost.Spirit which was distributed with Boost-1.42.0 with VS2005. My problem is like this. I've this string which was delimted with commas. The first 3 fields of it are strings and rest are numbers. like this. String1,String2,String3,12.0,12.1,13.0,13.1,12.4 My rule is like this qi::rule<string::iterator, qi::skip_type> stringrule = *(char_ - ',') qi::rule<string::iterator, qi::skip_type> myrule= repeat(3)[*(char_ - ',') >> ','] >> (double_ % ',') ; I'm trying to store the data in a structure like this. struct MyStruct { vector<string> stringVector ; vector<double> doubleVector ; } ; MyStruct var ; I've wrapped it in BOOST_FUSION_ADAPT_STRUCTURE to use it with spirit. BOOST_FUSION_ADAPT_STRUCT (MyStruct, (vector<string>, stringVector) (vector<double>, doubleVector)) My parse function parses the line and returns true and after qi::phrase_parse (iterBegin, iterEnd, myrule, boost::spirit::ascii::space, var) ; I'm expecting var.stringVector and var.doubleVector are properly filled. but it is not the case. What is going wrong ? Thanks in advance, Surya
