• Help with Python structure in *nixes.

  I came from a Windows background whern it comes to development environments. I'm used to run .exe's from everything I need to run and just forget. I usually code in php, javascript, css, html and python. Now, I have to use Linux at my work, in a non changeable Ubuntu 8.04, with permissions to upgrade my system using company's repositories only. I need to install Python 2.4.3 to start coding in an old legacy system. I had Python 2.5. I downloaded Python 2.4.3 tarballs, ran ./configure make and such. Everything worked out, but now the "default" installation is my system is Python2.4 instead of of Python2.5. I want help from you to change it back, and if possible, some material to read about symlinks, multiple Python installations, virtualenvs and such: everything I need to know before installing/upgrading Python modules. I installed for example the ElementTree package and don't even know in which Python installation it was installed. Thanks in advance!

• Email notifications of exceptions happening in a Python app?

  Hi folks, I want to set up email notifications when there is an error happening in my application. In ruby, there is a very elegant solution called ExceptionNotifier, which wraps around the exception handler and uses the built-in mailer to send an email. What is the best way of doing this in Python? I know that this is a very common issue, so would love for any tips that you folks can share! PS: Code samples, pointers to modules would be AWESOME! • What does a linux device need to be seen by Hal?

  I'm trying to learn about device drivers on Linux Kernel, for that I've created three modules with: A bus type A device driver A fake device that does nothing now, only is registered Everything works fine, I can load the bus, the driver and the module that creates the device. Everything appears on sysfs, including the link between the device and the device driver that indicates that they are binded. • Does Python work in larger teams?

  I read this post last night and it got me thinking. I like python and "batteries", pypi and such. But I've only done python solo. Never tried it in a team. Are the points that Ted mentions valid? If they are how do teams cope with them? Does Python work in teams or even large teams? Or it kills productivity? I personally see the problems he mentions when I come back to my old code. Even when working with other modules sometimes I need to peek inside. I would like to hear people with experience on this.

• How to 'hide' spurious "declared but never used" warnings?

  I'm using the C++Builder compiler which has a minor bug that certain static const items from system header files can cause spurious "xyzzy is declared but never used" warnings. I'm trying to get my code 100% warning free, so want a way of masking these particular warnings (note - but not by simply turning off the warning!) Also, I can't modify the header files. I need a way of 'faking' the use of the items, preferably without even knowing their type. As an example, adding this function to my .cpp modules fixes warnings for these four items, but it seems a bit 'ad-hoc'. • Change Makefile variable value

  Is there a way to reassign Makefile variable value inside of the target body? What I am trying to do is to add some extra flags for debug compilation: %.erl: %.beam $(ERLC) $(ERLFLAGS) -o ebin $< test: clean debug_compile_flag compile compile_test debug_compile: $(ERLCFLAGS) += -DTEST So if I invoke test target I would like to clean up my environment, add some new flags (like -DTEST to the existing ones), compile the whole code once again (first sources, then test modules). I do not want to copy/paste the code for compiling with some new flags set since there is a lot of logic put here and there. Is there some easy way to redefine the variable value so I can reuse the existing code?

• Using C# assemblies from VB6 code. Some issues.

  I have a C# assembly, which is regasmed, but is not in the GAC. In my VB6 code, I added a reference to the generated type library (the .tlb file). Then I instantiate the C# lib in my VB6 code. If I run it from the VB6 IDE, it does not work. The Set in the code below: Dim obj as MyCSharpNamespace.MyCSharpObject Set obj = New MyCSharpNamespace.MyCSharpObject causes this error: Automation error The system cannot find the file specified However, if I compile the VB6 project to an EXE and run it, it runs perfectly fine. I should add that all the VB6 project files (e.g. forms, modules, etc...) are in the same folder as the C# DLL and TLB. So why can't I run it from the IDE environment?

Broadly, I can divide the tasks in following two categories: 1) Views from the website For this part, I just use the SQL query and execute it in my facebook App. 2) Create Cotent Initially, I tried this by taking the values in a form and then inserting those values into the drupal database myself. But the problem was that there are so many modules using that content. So, is there any other way to submit the contents from the facebook application to Drupal website? I tried using the Drupal for Facebook module, but didn't like its lack of flexibility and a lot of bugs.

• Show extra info for Preference screens when CheckboxPreference summary field is not enough long?

  I have situation when you can enabled/disable modules for my Android application. For this I use a CheckboxPreference screen. This is all good, but the summary field gets cut off if longer descriptions are added than 2 lines. Suppose I have 4-5 lines of description available for each module, I would like to display this in a helper window. I tried to bind a click event to the CheckboxPreference, but that fires for the whole line, so not only when the checkbox is clicked, and more, where ever you click on the line the checkbox is toggled. So now I am wondering if this can be fixed. So if the user needs more info, just taps the text and the helper opens up, and if want to toggle the settings it taps the checkbox. How would you do it? I am open to other ideas too, if they do work.

• Software Protection: Shuffeling my application?

  Hi, I want to continue on my previous question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3007168/torrents-can-i-protect-my-software-by-sending-wrong-bytes Developer Art suggested to add a unique key to the application, to identifier the cracker. But JAB said that crackers can search where my unique key is located by checking for binary differences, if the cracker has multiple copies of my software. Then crackers change that key to make them self anonymous. That is true. Now comes the question: If I want to add a unique key, are there tools to shuffle (a kind of obfuscation) the program modules? So, that a binary compare would say that the two files are completely different. So they can't locate the identifier key. I'm pretty sure it is possible (maybe by replacing assembler blocks and make some jumps). I think it would be enough to make 30 to 40 shuffles of my software. Thanks

  I want to use a datagrid in one of my modules (Symfony 1.3, Propel ORM). I have spent a while searching the web, but everything I found expects a direct connection to teh db (mySQL) or is otherwise unsuitable. I found the datagrid plugin (http://symfony.swisscenter.com/datagrid/exemples), but the documentation/examples are in French - and I'm not too keen on learning French just for the sake of using the plugin - besides, if all the users are French speakers, then it will be difficult to get support/help if/when I do hget stuck. So my questions are: Is anyone aware of a good (PHP) datagrid component that I can use with SF? Is anyone out there (English speaker), using the SF datagrid plugin?

• WPF Show wait cursor before application fully loads

This is what i understood from reading about it, please correct me if I am wrong: I have the Model part which is the logic behind the program, let's say if we have a phonebook, so adding and removing contact from the Array will be the model. The Gui is the view and it contains buttons that upon clicking them, the model is changing. • GWT tries to load a deleted module

  I am using Eclispe with Google plugin for AppEngine and GWT. Recently I created a test GWT module, but eventually it has been deleted from the project and I can not find any sign of it in the project now. However, whenever I run the web app locally, I get in console the following message: Loading modules com.piq.exemity.Test [ERROR] Unable to find 'com/XXXXXX/Test.gwt.xml' on your classpath; could be a typo, or maybe you forgot to include a classpath entry for source? Has anyone got any idea where it can be hiding?

• Displaying User Relationships Module Blocks

  I'm unable to display any of the User Relationships' auto-created blocks in any of my sidebars. I have tried enabling all modules and permissions I can think of, with no success. The block I'm most interested in is the block that would allow users to be invited to an existing relationship (e.g. Friend), but as I say this nor any of the other blocks display. Other Drupal blocks and custom blocks display just fine. The blocks do show up in the blocks listing, and I've tried different ways of configuring them. Any help, or even confirmation that someone has been able to do this with the latest stable versions of Drupal and the User Relationships module, would be appreciated. Thank you.

I'm also trying to heavily decouple the application for maximum extensibility and testability. I have a rudimentary understanding of IoC, Repository Pattern, Unit of Work pattern and Service Layer pattern. I've made myself a diagram. • CoreDumpDirectory isn't working on ubuntu; getting segmentation fault with php

  I'm trying to solve a segmentation fault. This message appears in my apache-error.log: [notice] child pid 3979 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) I've tried disabling some apache and php modules but I'm still getting the same error. I've also tried putting this in apache2.conf: CoreDumpDirectory /tmp/apache2-gdb-dump and then chmod 777, chown www-data... so that the server can write. I can see no core-dump files to give me a hint on the error. Does anybody have an idea why CoreDumpDirectory isn't working on Ubuntu?

• Using Gradle with an existing Android project

  I have an existing Android project with the following structure: - ProjectName -- AndroidManifest.xml -- local.properties -- project.properties -- assets -- libs (containing all jars) -- modules (containing all library projects my project depends on) -- res -- src ---- com/namespace/projectname (all my classes including main activity are here) I haven't been using any specific build system to build my project other than the one provided by default with the Android Studio IDE (though the project was originally created with IntelliJ CE. I would like to use Gradle with the android plugin and do some work on my build process. I have tried several configurations in order to achieve this and have failed to complete a successful build every time. What's the recommended approach in this scenario? should I change my project structure? or is it possible to configure gradle using the existing structure? Any help would be greatly appreciated. However, I just want to generate Javadoc for Interfaces ONLY and I do not know how to check if a file is a class or interface in Ant. Someone suggested me that I should use and specify a list of files to exclude or include. However, there are hundreds of files in my program and specifying a list of class files to exclude is impossible. Does anyone have some ideas, please?

  I'm looking for some tools for testing vim scripts. Either vim scripts that do unit/functional testing, or classes for some other library (eg Python's unittest module) that make it convenient to run vim with parameters that cause it to do some tests on its environment, and determine from the output whether or not a given test passed. I'm aware of a couple of vim scripts that do unit testing, but they're sort of vaguely documented and may or may not actually be useful: vim-unit: purports "To provide vim scripts with a simple unit testing framework and tools" first and only version (v0.1) was released in 2004 documentation doesn't mention whether or not it works reliably, other than to state that it is "fare [sic] from finished". unit-test.vim: This one also seems pretty experimental, and may not be particularly reliable. May have been abandoned or back-shelved: last commit was in 2009-11 ( 6 months ago) No tagged revisions have been created (ie no releases) So information from people who are using one of those two existent modules, and/or links to other, more clearly usable, options, are very welcome.

• mod_perl memory leak

  Hello, I recently discovered that one of our sites has a memory leak in it, it's very strange because it happened all of the sudden. I've used GTop to measure the memory size per process and it tells me that the real value is somewhere around 65 MB (on the server) per request and and additional 5 MB shared. I tried preloading the modules in the startup.pl file a indicated in the performance tuning article for mod_perl. Nothing happened if fact the shared memory decreased down to 3.7 MB, in this situation I thought that my application is leaking memory do before any line of code got executed I measured the memory just to find out that the total value is in fact 64 MB, my questions are: Is there a default preallocation of memory for each process? Is there a configuration issue? Is mod_perl leaking memory ? Thank you very much.

• Executing commands on a Unix box from ASP .NET

  I'm in process to create a few utilities for my team to make life a bit easier working with our Unix boxes(most of them Solaris based). For example I'm creating a ASP .NET page to display the output of TOP. Also plan to be able to restart processes with the KILL -15 command. Now I wonder if there is any nice modules out the do the work for me or am I better off just going ahead with my own SSH communication? It would of course make sense building the app on the unix box directly but I'm not able to do this.
