• Files with illegal filenames [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to force Windows XP to rename a file with a special character? I have a few files whose names have characters such as "?" and ":" that are forbidden by windows. I'm not sure how they managed to get there with these names, since I can't manually create files with these names. They're recovered from an HFS drive, but the tool that recovered them was running under windows and so should have been subject to the same restrictions while creating them, I would think. Anyway... now that they're here, I can open them, but I can't move, copy, rename, or delete them. I want to delete a few of them, but most I want to save and copy to another drive. How might I go about this?

• Multi-machine backup solutions

  I have a growing number of PCs and laptops in my home that need a backup solution. My question is 2 fold: Most commercial backup vendors appear to license by the machine, are there any products that give a license that can be used on all your machines, without a per machine cost? An alternative is to have a centrally controlled back up strategy controlled from a single PC with an attached hard drive that can back up other machines on the network. What backup software is suitable for this approach? Will this software be windows/Linux interoperable? I've searched for duplicate questions but don't see anything that addresses the multi machine/cost issue. OSs in network will be Windows (XP, Vista, 7) and Linux variants. Not pattern to when machines will be switched on.

  Possible Duplicate: Computer is infected by a virus or a malware, what do I do now? I have a problem with "Security Shield". They pop up every 5 min and tell me that there are many viruses in my computer, that I should buy their license.. I have installed Sophos and don't want "Security Shield". • Performance Drop Lingers after Load [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do you do Load Testing and Capacity Planning for Databases I'm noticing a drop in performance after subsequent load tests. Although our cpu and ram numbers look fine, performance seems to degrade over time as sustained load is applied to the system. If we allow more time between the load tests, the performance gets back to about 1,000 ms, but if you apply load every 3 minutes or so, it starts to degrade to a point where it takes 12,000 ms. None of the application servers are showing lingering apache processes and the number of database connections cools down to about 3 (from a sustained 20). Is there anything else I should be looking out for here?

• Equalizer for Toshiba Satellite Pro Laptop (Windows 7) (has Realtek sound)

  Hi, I've been trying to find a way to have a real equalizer for my Toshiba Satellite Pro Laptop. I don't know much about computers but the guys in the store seem to know less than I do! From what I've been able to glean through friends, Windows 7 no longer supports a real equalizer function with Realtek, and the result is a fake "equalizer" that does nothing. I have hearing issues so not being able properly adjust the higher frequencies is causing me physical pain and ringing in my ears. I've tried to decipher the threads I find online but am quite confused by them. Basically I need an equalizer that will work with Windows 7 (with everything, internet, skype, music, etc). The current drivers offered by Realtek do nothing except make the sound inaudible. The one that may possibly work and provide an actual equalizer is a few versions back and can't be found anywhere. • Multiple network interfaces and UDP packets distribution

  I have a Linux server with 2 1Gb network interfaces eth1 and eth2. If I start 2 clients listening to the same multicast address and each client connects through a different NIC (say client 1 listens to the multicast through eth1 and client 2 through eth2), then client 2 gets duplicate UDP packets. If both clients use the same interface eth1 on the other hand, both clients work fine. I have already tried to set arp_filter and proxy_arp to 1 (arp flux issue) but it hasn't solved the issue. Is this a Linux kernel problem? Or is there another way to setup the interfaces correctly?

• Issues With IIS Hosting Two Domains From Same Folder

  I have two different domain names that resolve to the same ASP.Net site. Both domains are hosted on the same server, which runs Windows Server 2003 and IIS6. The sites are differentiated in IIS Manager using host headers. However, both of the sites point to the same folder on the local drive for the site's page files. I am occasionally experiencing an ASP.Net error that says "The state information is invalid for this page and might be corrupted." I'm the site developer so I've addressed all the relevant code-related causes for this issue. However, I was wondering whether having two domains/sites sharing the same folder for an ASP.Net application might be causing this intermittent error. Also, is this generally a bad practice? Should I make separate, duplicate folders for each of the domains? Seems like that can become a maintenance headache.

• How can I fix a computer that is infested with malware and is extremely unresponsive? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do I get rid of malicious spyware, malware, viruses or rootkits from my PC? I'm troubleshooting a Windows 7 PC for a friend. A couple of days ago it started running 'slow'. It turns out 'slow' is about 15 minutes to the first glimpse of the desktop, and another 30 to show icons. It is possible to open Task Manager, and nothing seems awry, CPU usage at 1-5%, plenty of memory free. The machine is clearly infested with malware though, in particular a program called 'Optimizer Pro' is demanding money to 'remove 5102 files slowing down my computer'. This seems highly suspicious. My problem is though, that I can't access msconfig (I left it for a couple of hours after having hopefully typed it into the Start Menu and hit enter - nothing seems to have loaded), or anything at all basically. I can boot from a Linux Live CD, but can I actually do anything useful from there? System Restore hasn't fixed it either, and Safe Mode exhibits the same behavior.

I have some questions about the server usage maybe someone can help me out. The community is based on JQuery with many ajax requests to update content. It makes 5 - 10 AJAX(Json, GET, POST) requests every 5 seconds, the requests fetch user data like user notifications and messages by doing mySQL queries. I wonder how a server will handle this when there are for more than 5000 users online. Then it will be 50.000 requests every 5 seconds, what kind of server you need to handle this? Or maybe even more, when there are 15.000 users online, 150.000 requests every 5 seconds. My webserver have the following specs. Xeon Quad 2048MB 5000GB traffic Will it be good enough, and for how many users? Anyone can help me out or know where to find such information, like make a calculation?

I always go into Dxdiag for some reason and i always see it says 4096 MB of RAM. But today I felt the PC was misbehaving, so i opened it and it said 3128 MB of RAM. Where did that 1 GB go?? When I check the computer properties, it says I'm using a 64-bit system with 4.00GB of RAM, but why does everything else say it has 3?

  Howdy! Running into an issue when some of our client's have their laptop's connected via the wired ethernet network aswell as on the WLAN of the same network. There is know issues caused to the end clients.. BUT! Being a Managed Services Engineer i get pretty over the alerts that come through on our reports for machine's with the same hostname on the same network! We are not going to remove this monitoring because it does help a lot with detecting and stopping inferior users and things like that. So basically.. Question is, is there a way in Windows (third party programs welcome) to disable the wireless network when a wired network is connected and operational.. I know that Windows automticaly 'prefers' the wired network, however they are still both connected and therfore there is duplicate hostnames on the same network. Could also have stupid issues with DNS and things like that! Thanks!

I read some where that if we right click on the file and in Properties-Security click the unblock option, this problem is solved but this is not working for me as I dont get Security tab in Properties.Please help!! • Shortcut with arguments in Debian

  I have a volume on a debian server which contains a large number of images at full resolution in various folders. What I'd like to do is have a separate sort of browse proxy folder which contains lower quality browse copies of these to enable users to access them for viewing over lower speed dial in accounts. I'd ideally like these to be created on the fly using ImageMagick so there isnt the need to store the large number of browse copies full time and worry about keeping them up to date etc The way I'd invisaged this happening is the browse proxy folder containing a duplicate file and folder structure but with symlinks pointing to a script to transform them with the file path as an argument. Except I know this isnt possible with symlinks so am wondering if there's another way of doing this on linux. On windows shortcuts can take arguments and I'm wondering how to do the same on a Linux platform? (or perhaps I'm going about this the wrong way?)

  I want to isolate my windows 7 operating system and I have looked into virtualization. This should work with Linux, however, I do want to still have a way to run windows 7 securely, but without significant performance loss, thus eliminating virtualization for that. I know that you can dual boot because I currently do so with my XP/Linux system. Is there a way that I can duplicate my windows 7 system so I can select one at bootup? This way I can ensure that each OS is isolated and not worry about performance loss. However, I am having a lot of trouble finding a solid method for OS duplication?! Is this even possible or must I buy two versions of win7 and somehow install them separately? Any information regarding this would be helpful, thanks! Essentially I want, Two instances of win7 (not necessarily simultaneously running) Each are isolated from one another so that a security breach in one doesn't affect the other. • How to achieve in-folder discussions with IMAP (skip SMTP send, Thunderbird)?

  Does anyone know a good way to achieve replying to a message into the same IMAP folder without sending another duplicate copy over SMTP? This is to be achieved with a conventional GUI mail client, especially Thunderbird. Goal is to have an in-folder conversation. This is possible with shared IMAP folders, with per-user Seen indices, where subscribed recipients are guaranteed to see the new messages without them arriving from internet. Thunderbird is capable of storing a copy of a reply in the same folder as original message (Account Options), which is half way there. Just pressing Save sends the message into Drafts and that is probably an even bigger patch to try to put a "draft message" into the same folder as original. All options, client, server or logic-wise are an acceptable answer, including programming i.e. patching/creating add-on for Thunderbird.

This will require installing an older version of mysql, but the packages that are listed are only showing a recent version. I'm currently running debian wheezy 7.1 and what was installed was the packaged 5.5.31. What is the official way to install an older copy?   Possible Duplicate: Is a UPS a good investment for a home machine? I have 2 Uninterruptible power supplies at home, but they seem to expire after 5 years or so. During this 5 years, it maybe saved the computer from turning off twice. But I wonder, I often save my documents every 10 minutes. So the most I can lose is 10 minute worth of work. Not to mention that, I may not be editing anything when the power is out. Also, when the UPS expires, one of them will give out beeping sound once in a while, probably signaling the changing of the battery. So I can either buy 2 new UPS or just buy 2 power outlets instead. 2 UPS, costing $160 to $250 roughly, can it be really worth it if it can save your computer from powering off for just 2 times? What are the alternatives?

I found that it contains the Broadcom BCM4310 chip, but when I install any Broadcom driver my laptop hangup on installing bcm5*.sys driver. Only power-off button make any effect. After reboot the device list (Device Manager) contains Broadcom WLAN adapter, but it is marked as disabled, for some hardware errror! Also if I disable device before, and install driver - then - all is OK! But when I try to enable it, Windows hang up anyway (no speaker beep, no mouse input, no keyboard input - nothing) What is the solution?

  Possible Duplicate: trouble with opening a port to make a connection I have watched a video on how to open my ports in Windows 7. I followed the example by going to my "firewall" in "advanced settings" and I made new rules in "inbound rules" and in "outbound rules". I chose to allow connections to all ports, but if I try it with canyouseeme, then it says I can't find the configured port. Maybe it is because the site is wrong, but I don't really believe so.   Possible Duplicate: Prevent mail being marked as spam I have an Ubuntu server that I want to be able to send out several thousand emails each containing a generic header and an unique pdf attachment containing an invoice.
