• What is the recommended way to empty a SSD?

  I've just received my new SSD since the old one died. This Intel 320 SSD supports TRIM. For testing purposes, my dealer put malware, err, Windows on it. I want to get rid of it and install Kubuntu on it. It does not have to be a "secure wipe", I just need the empty the disk in the mosy healthy way. I believe that dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda just fills the blocks with zeroes and thereby taking another write (correct me if I'm wrong). I've seen the answer How to enable TRIM, but it looks like it's suited for clearing empty blocks, not wiping the disk. hdparm seems to be the program to do it, but I'm not sure if it clears the disk OR cleans empty blocks. From its manual page: --trim-sector-ranges For Solid State Drives (SSDs). EXCEPTIONALLY DANGEROUS. DO NOT USE THIS OPTION!! Tells the drive firmware to discard unneeded data sectors, destroying any data that may have been present within them. This makes those sectors available for immediate use by the firmware's garbage collection mechanism, to improve scheduling for wear-leveling of the flash media. This option expects one or more sector range pairs immediately after the option: an LBA starting address, a colon, and a sector count, with no intervening spaces. EXCEPTIONALLY DANGEROUS. • Is there a word or description for this type of query?

  We have the requirement to find a result in a collection of records based on a prioritised set of search criteria against a relational db (I'm talking indexed field matching here rather than text search). The way we are thinking about designing the query is to begin with a highly refined and specific set of criteria. If there are no results for this initial query we want to progressively reduce the criteria one by one in order of reducing priority, querying each time such a less specific set of criteria until we find a result we can accept. Alternatively, we have considered starting with a smaller set of criteria and increasing until we have reduced number of results down to the last set. What I would like to know is if an existing term to describe this type of query exists? So that we can look to model our own on existing patterns and use best practice.

• How can I access old KMail emails after upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10?

  I initially installed Ubuntu 11.04 and used KMail for my email. All well and good. Then I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10. Presumably an upgrade of KMail took place as part of this. Now KMail won't even run; when I try, it tells me "Failed to fetch the resource collection" and crashes. I don't mind switching to another email client, but I'd very much like to be able to recover all of the emails I have stored in KMail. Any suggestions on how to do this? Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

  is doing the following possible in C# (or in any other language) 1. I am fetching data from a database. At run time i can compute the no. of columns and data types of the columns fetched. 2. Next i want to "generate" a class with these data types as fields. I also want to store all the records that i fetch in a collection. The problem is that i wanna do both step **1** and **2** at runt ime is this possible ? I am using C# currently but i can shift to something else if i need to.

  I am hosting collection of videos, for which I retain the copyright, on a file server that I'd like to share with family and friends. When a user visits the my fileserver via a web browser they are asked to authenticate using HTTP auth and then they are presented with a basic list of the files. I'd like to build web application that provides a clean interface with simply library functionality. However, this app will be hosted on a different server. I'm trying to figure out a security model for my file server that doesn't require the user to login to both the file-server and the hosting-server. I want to make this as easy as possible for my non-tech savy family while still maintaining security for my files.

  I'm hoping there's a book or something out there for me to get... If I have a class that has Collection as an instance variable, what is that method of coding called? A design pattern? If so, where can I find more information on it? As I've been working with this mentor, he's really helped me understand my programming weakness and that weakness is thinking in terms of collections or relationships between objects. It just seems so difficult for me right now and I need to read to become smarter. • Anyone know about AppDynamics? Does Microsoft already have something similiar? Event viewer? Im confused

  We have a big collection of java (80%) and .Net (20%) apps.. And the people in charge want a way to monitor the applications somehow. So they told me they are interested in AppDynamics? I have spent a bit looking into it but I still don't get it. Can someone tell me what its about ? From my understanding it seems like you would someone inject the AppDynamics API in your code to tell about differnt events that occur? So sounds like Event Viewer ? I am on the .NET side of this and seems to me we can just write data to a log and report off of that data.. I don't get what the additional complexity of using'AppDynamics' does. Maybe it is overkill ??

• multitenancy with some data sharing

  I'm in the planning stages of a new webapp, and I am leaning strongly toward a multitenancy model. The app has a file storage function, where the user can upload (and operate on) files. I would like the ability of the user to share these files, however. How is this typically accomplished in a multi-tenant model? The example would be something like google docs. Each user has their own files; they can edit and tag and build collections with these files. Then, they can share a doc or a collection with someone else for collaboration. If every user has their own Database and tables, what strategy would one use to allow this kind of sharing while minimizing duplication of files and associated metadata?

• What is a good way to refactor a large, terribly written code base by myself? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Techniques to re-factor garbage and maintain sanity? I have a fairly large PHP code base that I have been writing for the past 3 years. The problem is, I wrote this code when I was a terrible programmer and now it's tens of thousands of lines of conditionals and random MySQL queries everywhere. As you can imagine, there are a ton of bugs and they are extremely hard to find and fix. So I would like a good method to refactor this code so that it is much more manageable. The source code is quite bad; I did not even use classes or functions when I originally wrote it. At this point, I am considering rewriting the whole thing. I am the only developer and my time is pretty limited. I would like to get this done as quickly as possible, so I can get back to writing new features. Since rewriting the code would take a long time, I am looking for some methods that I can use to clean up the code as quickly as possible without leaving more bad architecture that will come back to haunt me later. So this is the basic question: What is a good way for a single developer to take a fairly large code base that has no architecture and refactor it into something with reasonable architecture that is not a nightmare to maintain and expand?

• What Design Pattern is seperating transform converters

  For converting a Java object model into XML I am using the following design: For different types of objects (e.g. primitive types, collections, null, etc.) I define each its own converter, which acts appropriate with respect to the given type. This way it can easily extended without adding code to a huge if-else-then construct. The converters are chosen by a method which tests whether the object is convertable at all and by using a priority ordering. The priority ordering is important so let's say a List is not converted by the POJO converter, even though it is convertable as such it would be more appropriate to use the collection converter. What design pattern is that? I can only think of a similarity to the command pattern.

• Sending Emails from existing SMTP host from Ubuntu Server

  I feel like my problem is very simple, but I've been trying for quite some time and haven't cracked it. You experienced server guys will probably laugh at this, but I'm finally at the point I need help or I'll never get anywhere. I have a little box running 12.04 LTS and I've wanted to script some status checks and have the server send me an email and schedule this with cron. I basically want a command line mail client that I can set up as easily as Thunderbird to send through my existing SMTP through the command line. Something that can easily be rolled into my bash scripts. I already have a remote host handling our email, SMTP, MTA, all that garbage. I don't particularly want to set up a relay just to send email when I have one that everyone else in the company already uses. I've tried, but there are too many aspects I don't understand AND I don't see why I should set up something local when we already pay for a remote host to do these things. If I absolutely have to set up sendmail or postfix, then so be it, but I'd appreciate a simple alternative. I'm open to practically anything at this point.

  I have recently downloaded JMF and don;t know where to start. Most online resources begin directly with programming and give no background of the JMF classes what so ever. So, I was planning on using a book or something that would give me ground-up knowledge of JMF. However, the books available on Amazon are of 1980's and 1990's. Can you please suggest any good books or references? Books preferred. Note: There was this one 2011 book available that was a print-on-demand collection of wikipedia articles on JMF but I decided not to opt for it because wikipedia articles should not be sold for money

• Use the &ldquo;using&rdquo; statement on objects that implement the IDisposable Interface

  From MSDN : C#, through the .NET Framework common language runtime (CLR), automatically releases the memory used to store objects that are no longer required. The release of memory is non-deterministic; memory is released whenever the CLR decides to perform garbage collection. However, it is usually best to release limited resources such as file handles and network connections as quickly as possible. The using statement allows the programmer to specify when objects that use resources should release them. The object provided to the using statement must implement the IDisposable interface. This interface provides the Dispose method, which should release the object's resources. In my quest to write better, more efficient code I ran across the “using” statement. Microsoft recommends that we specify when to release objects. • How to organize my 1000s of PDF?

  I have a huge collection of PDF. Mostly it consists of research papers, of self-created documents but also of scanned documents. Right now I drop them all in one folder and give them precise names with tags in the filename. But even that gets impractical, so I am looking for a PDF library management application. I am thinking of something like Yep for Mac, with the following features: PDF cover browsing (with large preview, larger than Nautilus allows) tagging of PDF (data should be readable cross-platform) possibility to share across network (thus rather flat files than database) if possible: cross-platform Mendeley seemed to be a good choice, but I am not only having academic papers and don't want to fill it all metadata that is required there. The only alternative I could find thus far is Shoka, but the features are limited and developments seems to have stopped already.

• SharePoint Database security corruption

  Hello, One time I faced an issue where my customer is having an HTTP 500 internal server error while trying to access any SharePoint site. The problem appeared once he moved back and forth with inheriting/breaking inheritance of permissions over different levels in the site collection. "Security corruption in database" sounds very tough for a customer running a production portal with a backup that can make him lose around 3 weeks of valuable data. However, the solution tends not to be that hard, there's an stsadm command that help us detect the corruption and even delete the orphaned items causing the corruption. Follow these steps: a. stsadm -o databaserepair -url http://SITEURL -databasename DBNAME                and it returned some orphaned items.            b. stsadm -o databaserepair -url http://SITEURL -databasename DBNAME -deletecorruption                and it removed the orphaned items. • Get/Post Controller Logic Best Practice

  In an ASP.NET MVC project (Razor), I have a Get request, which loads two properties on a model, dependent on the property passed into the action method. So if the parameter has a value, the Group property is supplied data. But if not, the Groups collection property is supplied data. In the post action method, when I process the data, to repopulate the view, I have to provide similar logic, and could getaway with returning Action(param) (the get response) to the caller. My question is, based on experience, is that a good practice to get into? I see some downsides to doing that, but adds the lack of code redundancy. Or is there a better alternative?

• How to teach your users/customers to send better error descriptions

  I often have to deal with customers or users which are reporting errors in applications. Most of the time their content is something useless as ERROR!!! x does not work without much more information. For resolving the issue I have to request every single detail of them, which often is more time consuming than fixing the issue itself. Other send information in formats which are not ideal, like screenshots (of data records, not of errors) although they could send a link (we have access to the systems) and so on. How do you tell your users/customers to describe the problems with more details so that the whole process could be easier for both sides? edit This question is more about the social skills, than how to achieve programmatic collection of logs and error information. I'm aware of the fact that this should be part of good software design.
