  • Upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10 Failed due to network troubles

    Every time I try and upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10 it keeps telling me that there are network problems. Is this a problem on "the other" side? My upgrade got through downloading half the packages last night but then went into sleep and then failed. Could it have something to do with that? My memory is that there are some papers on the topic, perhaps for Borland's Quattro (spreadsheet) project and possibly others.   • Conversion of Single to two UInt16 values in .net

    In the good old days of C. I could cast a float to an int (assuming 32 bit system), do some bit manipluation ( bitwise and, right shift, ect ), and get the upper and lower 16 bit hex representations of the floating point number, which I could then store in two short values. I'm not seeing an easy way of doing this in C#. System.Convert.ToUInt16 just does a float to int convert (even after I shift right), which leaves a vlaue of 0 if the float is less than 0, which is not the desired effect. //useless leaves me witg a value 0f 0 UIN16 s1 = (UInt16)((System.Convert.ToUInt32(d2) & 0xffff0000) >> 16); //capture the high word UInt16 s2 = (UInt16)(System.Convert.ToUInt32(d2) & 0xffff); //capture the low word A basic cast (UInt32) doesn't work either.

  • Oracle Data Protection: How Do You Measure Up? - Part 1

    This is the first installment in a blog series, which examines the results of a recent database protection survey conducted by Database Trends and Applications (DBTA) Magazine. All Oracle IT professionals know that a sound, well-tested backup and recovery strategy plays a foundational role in protecting their Oracle database investments, which in many cases, represent the lifeblood of business operations. But just how common are the data protection strategies used and the challenges faced across various enterprises? In January 2014, Database Trends and Applications Magazine (DBTA), in partnership with Oracle, released the results of its “Oracle Database Management and Data Protection Survey”. Two hundred Oracle IT professionals were interviewed on various aspects of their database backup and recovery strategies, in order to identify the top organizational and operational challenges for protecting Oracle assets. Here are some of the key findings from the survey: The majority of respondents manage backups for tens to hundreds of databases, representing total data volume of 5 to 50TB (14% manage 50 to 200 TB and some up to 5 PB or more). About half of the respondents (48%) use HA technologies such as RAC, Data Guard, or storage mirroring, however these technologies are deployed on only 25% of their databases (or less). This indicates that backups are still the predominant method for database protection among enterprises. Weekly full and daily incremental backups to disk were the most popular strategy, used by 27% of respondents, followed by daily full backups, which are used by 17%. Interestingly, over half of the respondents reported that 10% or less of their databases undergo regular backup testing.  A few key backup and recovery challenges resonated across many of the respondents: Poor performance and impact on productivity (see Figure 1) 38% of respondents indicated that backups are too slow, resulting in prolonged backup windows. In a similar vein, 23% complained that backups degrade the performance of production systems. Lack of continuous protection (see Figure 2) 35% revealed that less than 5% of Oracle data is protected in real-time.  Management complexity 25% stated that recovery operations are too complex. (see Figure 1)  31% reported that backups need constant management. (see Figure 1) 45% changed their backup tools as a result of growing data volumes, while 29% changed tools due to the complexity of the tools themselves.     I am fairly new to programming in general, and have been following the CS193p videos on iTunesU. I am currently doing assignment 3, and am having trouble getting a bit of information from the View sent to the View Controller. I believe I have set up the whole delegation thing correctly, so the question really is to how to get my View Controller to see a bit of information (such as self.bounds.size.width), which is a property that only the View has. Would this involve using self.dataSource? And if so, through what means could I pass this bit of information? Thanks!!

  • Dev Environment Tests Not 100% Compatible with Staging/Production in Rails

    We use a bunch of specific apps/APIs that (unfortunately) differ quite a bit from dev to staging/production. We use tests and continuous integration at each stage, but in dev, the tests fail annoyingly (throwing dialogs, etc - thanks Windows for the 64-bit notification!). I hate to write custom code, but are there some best practices for how to allow a subset of testing in ruby/rails - or for patching out specific tests when you're running on Windows? Some specific situations that: Identify.exe does not support 64-bit Windows and throws a dialog. Sethostname is not supported, and throws an error (at least it's command line).

  • Strange ZFS hidden filesystem problem

    Half of my ZFS filesystems are hidden in ZFS-fuse. Here's my story: So, I love ZFS. I used it for about six months on FreeBSD, but due to it crashing the kernel during heavy inter-filesystem IO load, I tried switching to Solaris 5.10. That was good, but when I attempted to do an import of my Version 13 pool into its Version 4 version of ZFS, there were some heafty problems. It may have tried to correct the filesystem definitions, I don't know. Since that version wasn't compatible with my pool, I've now switched to Ubuntu Server 10.4. That version more than supports that of my pool, but I can only see half of my filesystems. The filesystems I can see are the same as those Solaris could see. Now, despite those filesystems not being preset in a 'zfs list' command, I can still set properties on them and I can even still mount them and read and write files, but they just plain don't show up in 'zfs list'. I've mounted the major ones, but I'm not sure what other filesystems there are anymore (I have about eight that I can't see). Anyone have any idea what the heck is going on? I think I might try booting back into FreeBSD 8 (I still have the main boot drive laying around for that) and see if at least it is able to view the filesystems. I've also done a scrub while in Linux, and it found no errors with any of the data. Oddly, DMA read errors which caused problems on FreeBSD ZFS are reported by Linux, but ZFS-fuse doesn't find an error. That's a topic for another post however.

    Hi, I'm configuring a FreeBSD server hosting virtualbox serving half dozen mission critical busy mail servers. I just learned ZFS, I'm quite attracted, but have a few questions: what is the CPU overhead of ZFS? I googled and found little (or no) benchmark for that. from what I learned, when ZFS updates files, it keeps the old file as snapshot, and write the updated part for the new version. However that would mean for each snapshot it keeps that require significant storage overhead. How much is this storage overhead? For example, suppose I have 2TB usable space, how much space can actually be used for the latest version of files one year later? is FreeBSD with ZFS hosting virtualbox serving half dozen busy guest mission critical mail servers a reasonable combination? Anything particular to be careful with? And can I still choose ZFS for the guest OSs? This is because I may build another identical such box for redundancy, and will need to do some mirroring between each pair of the guest systems across the boxes. I'm trying to configure a Dell R710 for this. From what I learned, I shouldn't choose any RAID at all, is that true? In that case, are the drives still arrive hot swappable? this may sounds a bit pathetic, but since I have no experience with ZFS at all, and this is a mission critical server, so just ask just in case: I'm choosing twin Intel L5630 processors, and 6 x 600GB 15K RPM Serial-Attach SCSI drives. If I need more space in the future, I would just hot swap some drivers with larger capacity to expand the storage. There is no problem with these, right?
