• I'm thinking n+1 in a hyper-v r2 cluster managed by scvmm is not a great idea anymore

  Around here the clusters (not hyper-v clusters) are typically configured as n+1, so they are asking me to create a n+1 hyper-v r2 clusters. These will configured with both csv's and live migration and managed via scvmm r2. My thinking is that its a waste in having a node sitting there idle. In my opinion it would be better to have headroom left over for what would traditionally the +1 server spread amongst the N nodes. Anybody have an opinion on this. thanks

• Is SCCM overkill for medium-sized organizations?

  I am an IT technician in a high school with around 1600 students 250 staff and 800+ client computers mostly running Windows 7. Our team is composed of three members. My boss seems content with a network that works (just about) not necessarily a productive well maintained network that is easy to run and maintain. I'm still fairly early on in my I.T. career so I'm not up to speed on all the different endpoint management solutions that are available. I'm looking for a better way to manage clients (deploy software, track changes, inventory etc) I like the look of SCCM 2012's features but the case studies seem to be aimed at large multi-site infrastructural rather than a single mid sized site. Is SCCM suitable for a mid sized single site or is it aimed at much larger corporations? How can I determine whether or not an endpoint management solution like SCCM is a good fit for our organization? For example Client A can ping the NIC at 10.0.0.2 and vice-versa, but it gets a general transmit failure when it tries to ping the card at 223.6.6.2, let alone trying to ping the other client. I have completely disabled the firewalls on all machines and anything else I could think of, without success. What am I missing? Edit: Since posting this, I also noticed that the default gateways on my 2 NICs keep getting zeroed out. Does anyone know a fix for this?

  So, we're restructuring out development environment. We've installed SQL Server onto it's own server, and we are publishing our internal web applications onto a seperate web server. However, the problem is that for some reason the authentication of the user between the web server and sql server gets lost, resulting in the Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON' error. Where do i start troubleshooting? SQL Server is set up for TCP and remote connections.

  I am looking at configuring IPSec as follows: Isolation Request authentication for inbound and outbound connections Computer and user (Kerberos V5) I am looking to do a blanket deployment across all servers and domain controllers. Workstations I will leave as not set. What impact in terms of the domain controllers with the 2-way forest trust do think I would see? Should I exclude the IP addresses of the trusted domain controllers? I don't want to stop communication between the current and trusted forest, however I do want IPsec to be used within the current forest on all servers. The trusted forest is running 2008 R2 and the current forest is 2012 R2.

When will the microsoft learn? Now this is a loop. When I try to install from Server Manager, I get installation cannot be done. It needs installation disk. Does that mean I can't install at all without the installation disk in presence?

• Cloud services can't be reached from complex customer infrastructure

  We have several services running on a cloud, they all are hosted on Windows Server 2012 R2, have public IP address and specific port. Some of our customers can't reach them because for "some reason" the ports are cut between a firewall between them and us. (some customers are using a shared internet connection in a multi tenant office and they can't change firewall communication) Well, you get it, we don't have the possibility to make all the firewall "allowing" the communication. My customers all runs Windows 7 at least. What is the best counter solution in such case, using Microsoft (Windows Server) technologies? The best would be some kind of tunneling communication or VPN, but the customer should also be able to access his/her enterprise resources. Bby the way, today we using IPSec using Windows Firewall to secure the communication, is IPSec tunneling a solution for us? Otherwise, is there a service in Windows to enable some kind of VPN between a client and a server but only for a given set of servers?

• Intermittent timeout when connecting to Sql Server, what do I look for?

  Sql Server 2008 Standard 64bit on Windows Server 2008 R2 virtual machine hosted on a Hyper-V server. I'm getting intermittent timeouts when connecting to the server. This happens for both windows and Sql Authentication. May timeout every 2 out of 5 tries in different applications. When the connection times out, I can see (in Profiler) that no connection was made. Firewall is holey, server port is static (good ol' 1433). If I ping /t the server I get a steady connection that wavers between 1 and 2 ms. Any ideas what else to try would be appreciated, thanks.

• IIS slow response

  I have developed ASP.NET 4.5 application which take infos about sensors from sqlite database every 3 seconds. This application runs nice on my local develop machine on IIS Express server. I have created virtual machine (4x 3,25 GHz CPU; 6GB RAM) where i have installed Windows Server 2012 and IIS 8 service in order to test application on real server because we will run it on production machine later. After installing VC++ 2010 x64 and VC++ 2010 x86 and set "Enable 32-bit application" to true in application pool website started to work but there is a large problem with response time. There is a for example 10 seconds delay before page loads. CPU utillization is about 10% and RAM about 1,5GB. I am new to configuring IIS server so i want to ask if there is some tip how to make it faster. I am sure, there will be some twist which will make it normal work. Many thanks.

  I recently set up a server with AD DC and used a mydomain.local address for it. I now would like to be able to access the server through remote desktop from outside my local network. So I have purchased a domain name that I have set up with my router for DDNS and forwarded to the IP of my server. I was wondering a few things. A) Is there a way I can forward the DDNS to point to my current AD DC x.local address so I wouldn't have to change the domain to log in from outside of local network? B) If there is not a way to do what I mentioned above, what is the easiest way to change the Domain Name (mydomain.local) in my AD DC? Should I completely remove it or is there a way to change it? I am using windows server 2012.

• Can I install applications to Remote Desktop Session Hosts via Group Policy?

  I have a GPO that installs an application using the Software installation policy under Computer Configuration. I assign this GPO to the OU with our desktop/laptop computers, and my clients all install the software fine. I have another separate OU that covers our new Server 2012 RD session hosts. Previously, we've manually installed applications on our one Terminal Server. Now we have one Broker and two Session Hosts. I'd like to take my existing GPO, assign it to the session hosts, and have it install on the next reboot after a gpupdate so I'm sure that each is identically configured. Given this info: Should I be able to install applications via GPO to Session Hosts? Will Group Policy automatically install the applications as if I put the session host into /install mode, or do I need to do that?

  Is there anything else that the code must do to sanitize identifiers (table, view, column) other than to wrap them in double quotation marks and "double up" and double quotation marks present in the identifier name? References would be appreciated. I have inherited a code base that has a custom object-relational mapping (ORM) system. SQL cannot be written in the application but the ORM must still eventually generate the SQL to send to the SQL Server. All identifiers are quoted with double quotation marks. string QuoteName(string identifier) { return "\" + identifier.Replace("\"", "\"\"") + "\""; } If I were building this dynamic SQL in SQL, I would use the built-in SQL Server QUOTENAME function: declare @identifier nvarchar(128); set @identifier = N'Client"; DROP TABLE [dbo].Client; --'; declare @delimitedIdentifier nvarchar(258); set @delimitedIdentifier = QUOTENAME(@identifier, '"'); print @delimitedIdentifier; -- "Client""; DROP TABLE [dbo].Client; --" I have not found any definitive documentation about how to escape quoted identifiers in SQL Server. I have found Delimited Identifiers (Database Engine) and I also saw this stackoverflow question about sanitizing. If it were to have to call the QUOTENAME function just to quote the identifiers that is a lot of traffic to SQL Server that should not be needed. The ORM seems to be pretty well thought out with regards to SQL Injection. It is in C# and predates the nHibernate port and Entity Framework etc. All user input is sent using ADO.NET SqlParameter objects, it is just the identifier names that I am concerned about in this question. This needs to work on SQL Server 2005 and 2008.

  Hi All, I installed Visual Studio 2008 Professional in my machine and It had installed SQL Server Express 2005 database in machine, and I use it very fine! I installed SQL Managment Studio and works great. So, in this week I Installed Visual Studio 2010 Pro in machine and the setup installed the SQL Server express 2008 and it overwrite the instance of my SQL Server Express 2005. All right, Now, I'd like to know how can I have two instances of the SQL Server Express in my Machine, Express 2005 and Express 2008.   I recently got my hands on a couple of 4 socket servers with Intel E7-4870's (10 cores per cpu) and with hyper threading enabled that gave me 80 logical CPU's. The server has Windows 2008 R2 SP1 along with SQL 2008 (Currently we can not deploy SQL 2008 R2 for the application being hosted).   I have been trying to resolve my issue of spiking cpu caused by php-fpm processes. I've reduced the php-fpm config settings to: pm = ondemand pm.max_children = 12 pm.start_servers = 2 pm.min_spare_servers = 2 pm.max_spare_servers = 10 pm.max_requests = 500 php_admin_value[memory_limit] = 128M Problem still exists. I'm running a Joomla main site (which is having no problems) and a Magento store in a sub-directory. My server is a Linux CentOS, running NGINX, APC, Memcached, Full Page Cache and php-fpm. My server has 8 cores and 16gb dedicated ram. My host has shut down my server several times the past week because my php-fpm processes are consuming the entire network. A lot of the individual php-fpm processes are getting over 50% cpu. I've hired several "professionals" and none of them was able to help me, so now broke and stumped, I'm turning to you guys for help. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. the server is not using much memory: Mem: 16777216k total, 1204040k used, 15573176k free My.conf settings: query_cache_size = 128M innodb_buffer_pool_size = 512M open-files-limit = 8192 table_cache=4096 I just noticed that someone changed my innodb_buffer_pool_size to 512M. Shouldn't this be set to 80% of available ram? So I have 16gb ram so it should be set at 12G; however, I set it at 10G. What do you think? I made that change and restart everything. Php-fpm is still spiking cpu. Here is just 1 php-fpm process: 23942 user 17 0 507m 99m 27m R 90.9%CPU 0.6 0:03.46 php-fpm I'm sure there may be more information you will need to help, so just let me know what you guys need to help me figure this out.   I've checked online for most solution for this issue, but nothing seems to be working. When I check the log files on our OCS 2007 R2 server, it is identifying 25 users in the address book. However, when I try and force a sync with the clients, they do not update. I can find the users if I search for them, but they are not coming down by themselves. Is there anything I can check or force from the client side? There is no address book file locally to delete and re-force down.

• Intermittent unavailability of an instance in a failover cluster while a standby node is offline in

  Hi everyone. I've got a small failover cluster that I run for the websites my company has. During a RAM upgrade of the standby server, our websites started to show errors about not being able to access the database server. I verified that the instance was indeed up and the server accessable via remote desktop. I also tried a SQL connection to it and it worked, but that might have been after it became available again. This happened on and off until we were able to roll back the hardware changes that were in progress on the standby server and we were able to bring it back up. There was nothing of interest in the SQL Server log, but there is a continous log for the whole duration of the problem, so there was no restart of the SQL Server service. The event viewer is of more interest, since it shows events relating to the heartbeat network card, but I don't know how that would affect the availability of the server, since the standby node is offline. I'd appreciate any help you can provide, it's not very redundant if the setup depends on the standby server being up. :) Here are the event logs from the time of the problem, I include all of them since I can't seem to see what could possibly be the cause of the problem.
