  Hi! Yesterday I made a dist-upgrade on my Debian Lenny server. I thought it will be easy as an usual upgrade, but it's not. • How can I get FreeNAS to respond to libvirt shutdown requests

  I have a KVM VM of FreeNAS 0.7.1 Shere (revision 5127) running on Ubuntu Server 10.04 and I'm unable to convince the VM to shutdown from the host virsh shutdown freenas I would expect this to send some ACPI? trigger to the VM and FreeNAS then do what it's told. I'm not a FreeBSD fundi so I don't really know what packages or processes to poke to get this running. Therefore, we did a sync and then this to flush the cache and buffers: echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches and directly afterwards the I/O wait and service times virtually went through the roof, and everything on the machine felt like slow motion. During the next few hours the latency recovered and everything was as before - small to medium lags in short, unpredictable intervals. Now my question is: does anybody have any idea what might cause this annoying behaviour? Is it the first indication of the disk array or the raid controller dying, or something that can be easily mended by rebooting? (At the moment we're very reluctant to do this, however, because we're afraid that the disks might not come back up again.) Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Chris. Edited to add: we do see one or two processes go to 'D' state in top, one of which seems to be kjournald rather frequently. If I'm not mistaken, however, this does not indicate the processes causing the latency, but rather those affected by it - correct me if I'm wrong. I'm trying to setup an apache+php+mysql installation within the jail and have the webserver accessible by users.   Hello, I'm using WIA to acquire images from a scanner with C#. I can scan the papers, but I can't set up the page size correctly, it always defaults to A4 and I need to use Letter or Legal sometimes. I tried with the WIA_DPS_PAGE_SIZE property, but when I try to set a value, I always get an error, that the value is out of the interval (tried a lot of possible values). I wan't to be able to use WIA_DPS_PAGE_SIZE = WIA_PAGE_AUTO (for automatic page size), but I can't find anything on the web related to this. Does anyone know a solution? thanks!

  I'm trying to implement a genetic algorithm that will calculate the minimum of the Rastrigin functon and I'm having some issues. I need to represent the chromosome as a binary string and as the Rastrigin's function takes a list of numbers as a parameter, how can decode the chromosome to a list of numbers? Also the Rastrigin's wants the elements in the list to be -5.12<=x(i)<=5.12 what happens if when i generate the chromosome it will produce number not in that interval?   In a VSTO add-in I'm developing, I need to execute a method with a specific delay. The tricky part is that the method may take anywhere from 0.1 sec to 1 sec to execute. But the UI thread seems to hang up for 3-5 seconds between each task. Do Timers have a 'warm-up' time to start? Is that why it takes so long for its first (and last) elapse? Which type of timer do I use instead?

  How bad is it to use Location Manager to retrieve the location information when MapView.showUserLocation is also TRUE? I have a situation where i want to show the blue dot to indicate the user's current location, and i want to record the user's current location after some time interval. Having said that, there may be situations where the user's current location is now being shown, but i still want to get the user's current location. I think i'll have to use the Location Manager in my controller class, but setting showUserLocation = YES would mean that i'll be draining more battery since two Location Managers are working at the same time? Is this assumption correct?

• AdMob ads on Android app are not rotating / refreshing

  Has anyone else had this problem? I have a game, and the Ads show at the top of the phone above my game view. When I'm tapping away on the game, the ads just stay the same. BUT, if I don't touch anything and wait the 15 seconds, as is set in my Interval, THEN the ad changes (usually). I don't get any error reports. There's nothing to indicate that this shouldn't be working just fine, but I have no idea why my ads aren't refreshing or rotating while I'm interacting with the other View in my application. Any direction or thoughts would be helpful, thank you!

I haven't updated my logback configuration from what I had used with Jetty and consequently am not seeing any logs being written. What logging provider should I use? Should I just do my configuration with the Glassfish loggers in domain.xml? <access-log rotation-interval-in-minutes="15" rotation-suffix="yyyy-MM-dd"/> <log-service file="${com.sun.aas.instanceRoot}/logs/server.log" log-rotation-limit-in-bytes="2000000"> <module-log-levels/> </log-service> These are the defaults in domain.xml. I'd like to split the longs up into several files as well as control log level for each package.   I am trying to understand the relation between TCP/IP and HTTP timeout values. Are these two timeout values different or same? Most Web servers allow users to set the HTTP Keep Alive timeout value through some configuration. How is this value used by the Web servers? is this value just set on the underlying TCP/IP socket i.e is the HTTP Keep Alive timeout and TCP/IP Keep Alive Timeout same? or are they treated differently? My understanding is (maybe incorrect): The Web server uses the default timeout on the underlying TCP socket (i.e. indefinite) and creates Worker thread that counts down the specified HTTP timeout interval. When the Worker thread hits zero, it closes the connection.

  Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone knows how to prevent the contents of a uiscrollview from moving unsteadily when scrolling manually by setting the content offset. When scrolling by touch the text remains clear and steady. I would like to recreate this by animating with the animated option set to false. I'm using a timer to scroll at a given interval. The text is being drawn to a view in the contents, but it vibrates and it becomes more difficult to read clearly when animating at a greater speed. The speed varies and the scrolling must respond to changes in speed quickly. • C# timer won't tick

  hi, i have a strange problem... I've been going out of my mind for the past couple of hours... the timer i put in my winform code (from the toolbar) won't tick... I have timers on a couple of forms in my program, they all work fine... I try to do exactly the same it this it won't tick... I select it, drag it on to a form, enable it, set interval and handle the tick event... and nothing happens... i even tried putting random code like messagebox.show in the tick event just to see if anything happens, and nothing!!! as I said, a have a couple of more timer in my program (on other forms, not in the one i'm trying to put this timer) and they all work fine... any suggestions? thanks in advance!

• using AudioQueues with AudioFileReadBytes

  Hey Im trying to work with Audio queues to play a very big mp3 file (arround 23 hours long). when audio queue asks for buffers though callback, im using AudioFileReadBytes() API to read the bytes from audio file and feed the queue. startQueue fails with the error : prime failed any inputs????? Also I succeeded playing file using AudioFileReadPackets API instead of AudioFileReadBytes(). But the problem with API is that when I seek (fast forward) by a long interval, say 9 hours (for example fast forward from 32 mins playtime to 9:32 mins) then AudioFileReadPackets() takes a long time (almost 2 mins) to read from new location. any comments would be greatly appreciated.

  Since TIMESTAMP in mysql is stored as a 32bit value representing the time interval from 1970-jan-1 0:00:00 in seconds, I assumed that using minus (-) operator on TIMESTAMP values would give the difference of these values in seconds. So far finding the equivalent Cassandra data model has been quite easy, but I've stumbled on the following problem for which I'd appreciate some input: Consider a MySQL table holding millions of entities: CREATE TABLE entities ( id INT AUTO_INCREMENT NOT NULL, entity_information VARCHAR(...), entity_last_updated DATETIME, PRIMARY KEY (id), KEY (entity_last_updated) ); The table is regularly queried for entities that need to be updated: SELECT id FROM entities WHERE entity_last_updated IS NULL OR entity_last_updated < DATE_ADD(NOW(), INTERVAL -7*24 HOUR) ORDER BY entity_last_updated ASC; The entities returned by this queries are then updated using the following query: UPDATE entities SET entity_information = ?, entity_last_updated = NOW() WHERE id = ?; What would be the corresponding Cassandra data model that would allow me to store the given information and effectively query the entities table for entities that need to be updated (that is: entities that have not been updated in the last seven days)?
