• Providing File permissions in Installshield

  I have created an installer in Installshield X. I want to give 'write permissions' to few files when the installation is done in Non-Admin Windows accounts ( by default it will have only 'read' permission). If I select individual file and go to properties (inside Installshield),i have permissions tab where they have provided options like Domain , Readonly, Full Control, Modify etc. I have tested these options but it doesn't effect the msi file.(specific files doesn't have write permission). Is there something wrong I am doing? • Using MD5 to generate an encryption key from password?

  I'm writing a simple program for file encryption. Mostly as an academic exercise but possibly for future serious use. All of the heavy lifting is done with third-party libraries, but putting the pieces together in a secure manner is still quite a challenge for the non-cryptographer. Basically, I've got just about everything working the way I think it should. I'm using 128-bit AES for the encryption with a 128-bit key length. I want users to be able to enter in variable-length passwords, so I decided to hash the password with MD5 and then use the hash as the key. I figured this was acceptable--the key is always supposed to be a secret, so there's no reason to worry about collision attacks. Now that I've implemented this, I ran across a couple articles indicating that this is a bad idea. My question is: why? If a good password is chosen, the cipher is supposed to be strong enough on its own to never reveal the key except via an extraordinary (read: currently infeasible) brute-force effort, right? Should I be using something like PBKDF2 to generate the key or is that just overkill for all but the most extreme cryptographic applications?

  Table A has a computed field called Computed1. It's persisted and not null. Also, it always computes to an expression which is char(50). It's also unique and has a unique key constraint on it. Table B has a field RefersToComputed1, which should refer to a valid Computed1 value. Trying to create a foreign key constraint on B's RefersToComputed1 that references A' Computed1 leads to the following error: Error SQL01268: .Net SqlClient Data Provider: Msg 1753, Level 16, State 0, Line 1 Column 'B.RefersToComputed1' is not the same length or scale as referencing column 'A.Computed1' in foreign key 'FK_B_A'. Columns participating in a foreign key relationship must be defined with the same length and scale. Q: Why is this error created? Are there special measures needed for foreign keys for computed columns, and if so what are they? Summary: The specific problem rises from computed, char based, fields being varchar. Hence, Computed1 is varchar(50) and not char(50). It's best to have a cast surrounding a computed field's expression to force it to a specific type. Credit goes to Cade Roux for this tip.

  Hi Android experts, I am trying to play the bigger size audio wav file(which is 20 mb) using the following code(AudioTrack) on my Android 1.6 HTC device which basically has less memory. But i found device crash as soon as it executes reading, writing and play. But the same code works fine and plays the lesser size audio wav files(10kb, 20 kb files etc) very well. P.S: I should play PCM(.wav) buffer sound, the reason behind why i use AudioTrack here. • scaling svg paths in Raphael 2.1

  I'm using SVG paths from a wikimedia commons map of the US. I've singled out Pennsylvania with its counties. I'm feeding the paths out of a database and using Raphael 2.1 to put them on the page. Because in the original map, Pennsylvania was so small and set at an angle, I'd like to scale up the paths and rotate Pa. so that it isn't on an angle. When I try to use Raphael's transform method, all the counties look strange and overlapped. I gave up on setting the viewBox when I heard that it doesn't work in all browsers. Anyone have any ideas? At first, I thought that my tokenizer class was broken. But after logging all the incoming bytes to the tokenizer, it turns out that the raw bytes in recvb weren't a valid message. I didn't think that corrupted data like this was possible with a tcp data stream. I figured it had to be some type of buffer overflow so I set sock.ReceiveBufferSize = 1024 * 1024 * 8; and the parsing error never, ever occurs in testing (it happens often enough to replicate if I don't change the ReceiveBufferSize). But my question is: why wasn't I seeing an exception or an error state or something if the socket's internal buffer was overflowing before I changed this buffer size?

• Progressive MP4 video issues in Flash- Video stops rendering

  I'm currently working on a flash project that has an intro video that plays before heading into the main app. This video is an H.264 .mp4, 1550x540, and around 10MB. The problem thats currently driving me insane is that when I test it, occasionally the video will begin playing, and then suddenly stop rendering the video frames, leaving the audio playing in the background with nothing on screen. Once the file is played through fully (based on listening to the audio), my playback complete event fires like it should, but I can't find any info of people having similar issues.   Iam trying to get a location (latitute and longitude), I cant figure out what Im doing wrong but my location keeps returning null. • Json HTTP Module stream issue

  Hey, I have an HTTP Module that I use to clean up the JSON returned by my web service (see http://www.codeproject.com/KB/webservices/ASPNET_JSONP.aspx?msg=3400287#xx3400287xx for an example of this.) Basically it relates to calling cross-domain JSON web services from javascript. There is this JsonHttpModule which uses a JsonResponseFilter Stream class to write out the JSON and the overloaded Write method is supposed to wrap the name of the callback function around the JSON, otherwise the JSON errors out as needing a label. However, if the JSON is really long, the Write method in the Stream class is called multiple times, causing the callback function to incorrectly get inserted midway through the JSON. Is there a way in the Stream class to wrap the callback function around the stream at the end or to specify that it write all of the JSON in 1 Write method instead of in chunks?? In my language I have some commands, say XYZ 3 5 GGB 8 9 HDH 8783 33 And in my Lex file XYZ { return XYZ; } GGB { return GGB; } HDH { return HDH; } [0-9]+ { yylval.ival = atoi(yytext); return NUMBER; } \n { return EOL; } In my yacc file start : commands ; commands : command | command EOL commands ; command : xyz | ggb | hdh ; xyz : XYZ NUMBER NUMBER { /* Do something with the numbers */ } ; etc. etc. etc. etc. My question is, how can I get the entire text XYZ 3 5 GGB 8 9 HDH 8783 33 Into commands while still returning the NUMBERs? Also when my Lex returns a STRING [0-9a-zA-Z]+, and I want to do verification on it's length, should I do it like rule: STRING STRING { if (strlen($1) < 5 ) /* Do some shit else error */ } or actually have a token in my Lex that returns different tokens depending on length?

• Troubleshooting FORM POST problems

  I'm using the following code to submit to a WCF service. I keep getting an error that the key is invalid. I have a webpage on the same server that I submit the same data (but different key) using a FORM POST. It works fine that way. I put the URL below all in a URL (including valid key from server webpage) and get the key is invalid error. I'm thinking the data I'm submitting through the iPhone isn't really going across as a FORM POST but rather as a URL. Is there anything I may be doing wrong in the following code or any other suggestions? • Can I configure the ResetPassword in Asp.Net's MembershipProvider?

  I have an C# asp.net app using the default Sql MembershipProvider. My web.config has a few settings that control how I'm using this Provider: enablePasswordRetrieval="false" enablePasswordReset="true" requiresUniqueEmail="true" passwordFormat="Hashed" minRequiredPasswordLength="5" The problem I'm running into is that when people reset their passwords, it seems the ResetPassword() method returns a password that is longer than I want and has characters that can be confusing (l,1,i,I,0,O). Furthermore, I'm sending my users an email with a plain-text message and an HTML message (I'm using MailMessage with AlternateViews). If the password has unsafe HTML characters in it, when the email clients render the HTML text the password might be different (e.g. the %, &, and < aren't exactly HTML safe). I've looked over the "add" element that belongs in the web.config, but I don't see any extra configuration properties to only include certain characters in the ResetPassword() method and to limit the password length. Can I configure the ResetPassword() method to limit the password length and limit the character set it is choosing from? Right now I have a workaround: I call ResetPassword() to make sure the supplied answer is correct, and then I use a RandomPassword generator I downloaded off the internet to generate a password that I like (without ambiguous characters, HTML safe, and only 8 characters long) and then I call ChangePassword() to change the user's password after I've already reset it. My workaround seems kludgy and I thought it would be better to configure ResetPassword() to do what I want. Thank you~! ColoradoTechie
