  • Image backup with two Macs

    Hi, My setup is as follows: iMac + Ext. HD in the living room A MacBook I want to create a regular weekly backup flow, that will create an image file for the MacBook (the entire disk image), and save it to the ext. HD on the iMac, meaning -- connect via local network and save the file. What's the best practice/application for this? Thank you.

    hi, I did installed xampp on my macbook a day before. It worked perfectly yesterday. But today when I try to start the phpmyadmin it gives the following error: Can't create/write to file '/var/folders/Uu/UuhwtR9xE3Ozsao8ttdIWU+++TI/-Tmp-/#sql1b5_8_0.MYI' (Errcode: 13) Can anybody tell the solution for this problem.   • How to fix White Screen of Death after updating iTunes?

    The other night I updated my iTunes to the latest version (through Software Update) when I came to turn on my computer I was greeted with the dreaded white screen of death. I use an early 2008 iMac 24". I've tried the basic things, unplugging/turning off accessories, trying to boot from the install disk, reseting pram, etc, etc. Still no luck and no change what-so-ever. All I've been able to ascertain that my keyboard still works (by ejecting). I should point out that I did recently replace my Hard drive with a Western Digital Black 500GB (though the computer is well out of warrenty) and I'm a little concerned that the problem could be the screen.

    When I bought my MBP 2.2 GHZ in 2007, it got from dead to an active dock in about 18 seconds, and now it takes about 1:30 to get a fully responsive home screen. I want to find a way to profile the various things it does when it starts up so I can begin tuning it a bit. Any good software or other recommendations for this process?

  • bash: per-command history. How does it work?

    OK. I have an old G5 running Leopard and a Dell running Ubuntu 10.04 at home and a MacPro also running Leopard at work. I use Terminal.app/bash a lot. On my home G5 it exhibits a nice feature: using ? to navigate history I get the last command starting with the few letters that I've typed. This is what I mean (| represents the caret): $ ssh user@server $ vim /some/file/just/to/populate/history $ ss| So, I've typed the two first letters of "ssh", hitting ? results in this: $ ssh user@server instead of this, which is the behaviour I get everywhere else : $ vim /some/file/just/to/populate/history If I keep on hitting ? or ?, I can navigate through the history of ssh like this: $ ssh otheruser@otherserver $ ssh user@server $ ssh yetanotheruser@yetanotherserver It works the same for any command like cat, vim or whatever. That's really cool. Except that I have no idea how to mimic this behaviour on my other machines.   • Where does PGP keep its license file within OSX?

    I was using a trial from PGP. Now have a license supplied by the company I work for. Upon trying to overwrite/upgrade - PGP is reporting that its using the 'old', namely trial license. Which has long expired. How can I completely rid my machine of PGP - and thus be able to install a fresh copy? Where does this pesky license file reside? OS: 10.6.2 PGP: 10

  • How can I quickly access the Microsoft Word zoom setting?

    I get a lot of Word documents to work on, and the first thing I always do is access the zoom setting (View- Zoom) and change the zoom to "Page Width". There's no keyboard shortcut for the zoom settings, and I do it enough times that I'd like a quicker way. In Pages, there's a little pop-up that lets you choose the zoom you want. Is there a way to quickly change the zoom settings in Word? Thanks.

  • Picture syncing on Multiple Macs, iPhones, and iPad together so each device can update them all

    Hello! One of the owners of my company has put me to task to sync his pictures between the following devices together. (2) iPhones (2) iMacs (1) Macbook Air (1) iPad Here is what is happening 1) He has a camera that can upload pictures into iPhoto in either (1) of his iMacs, or Macbook Air. 2) He has (2) different iPhones. And here are how they are paired up iPhone - iMac Home iPhone - Macbook Air 3) He has MobileMe syncing Calendar, Contacts, and Notes across all devices 4) Currently we are using MobileMe web galleries to sync all photos, by having ME create each album and upload them to the MobileMe web gallery. Not the problem is. He wants to just take pictures, and once he does that it syncs with all his devices, he'll even dock the iPad. Is there a better way to sync photos between all devices?

  • RSync to WebDAV mounted volume very slow

    I have a mounted WebDAV store, which I am playing around with to try and put together my own pseudo-DropBox set up. However, it seems very slow to upload larger files (my bandwidth graph goes ok for a little bit, then just stops dead for long periods of time). Has anyone tried this? I'm wondering if the way it gets mounted makes rsync think it's a local drive or something and so may be chattier than it would be if it knew it was a mounted network drive? (I'm new to rsync so may be all wrong here!) I'm syncing using rsync -rv /source/directory/ /mounted/webdav/directory/ This is running using MacOS 10.6, and WebDAV is mounted using the native mounting mechanism.

  • Bind "media" keys on MacBook keyboard to application menu items

    Currently, I am using PandoraBoy to listen to my Pandora stations. In the preferences, it allows you to set global hotkeys to control playing, like/dislike, volume, stations, etc. What I would like to do is allow the built-in media keys on my MacBook Pro's keyboard (F7-F12: Previous, Play/Pause, Next, Mute, Volume Up, Volume Down) to control PandoraBoy like they do iTunes. Right now, I am using Command-F(7-12) to control it, but that requires me to hold down the "fn" and command keys Is there a way to bind these commands to the media keys without needing to function-shift them?

  • OpenVPN with MacOS X Client and same subnets in local and remote net.

    I have a homenetwork 192.168.1.0/24 with gteway 192.168.1.1 and a remote network with the same parameters. Now I want to create a OpenVPN tunnel between those networks. I have no problems with Windows, because Windows routes everything to 192.168.1.0/24 except 192.168.1.1 throught the tunnel. Q: How do I set up my routes in MacOS X for the same behaviour as on windows, to route everything except 192.168.1.1 through the tunnel, but leave the default gateway to be my local 192.168.1.1 ?

In windows, to right click any where - or to bring up a pop up menu we just type a key right beside on window key / pop-up key or press Shift + F10 to bring up pop up any where.     I am trying to send data (plain text string) to a port at a remote computer using terminal utility. The string would be used to trigger something on the remote computer running a program that would listen to that specific port. I used netcat command and tried a few combination of the following but can't seem to get the parameter right. Can someone point me out where am I doing wrong? eddy-2:Desktop eddy$ nc IPADDRESS PORT woc.txt eddy-2:Desktop eddy$ nc IPADDRESS PORT < woc.txt P.S: woc.txt contains plain text string of the said command.   • Why does some of the songs in my iTunes library stop prematurely and go to the next song?

    For the couple of weeks a whole bunch of the songs from my iTunes library stop early and skip to the next song (just as if it was at the end of the song). Although the point where it skips varies for each song (for one song it is 2:32, another is 2:46), it will always skip at the same point for each song. A while back I ran BPMer and, although it crashed half way through, it did not appear to corrupt my music the way it is now. A few days ago I backed up my iTunes library and reformatted my hard drive (for a completely unrelated issue) and reinstalled OS X from scratch. The problem was happening before and after the reinstall. This problem also persists when the music is synced across to my iPod touch running 3.0. Listening to the same troublesome songs in my iPod causes them to end prematurely. However, I can listen to the whole song using Quicklook, so the problem must be with my iTunes library or something.

  • Login window language has changed after update on Snow Leopard

    After the latest update (beginning of Dec. 2012) on Snow Leopard my login window language has changed. My system is set to be in english but the login windows now is in french. Currently I am in France so I suspect that during the update something has revealed my location and installed something in the locale of the current location. It doesn't seem fair to me, I want to switch it back to english but I couldn't find a way to do it.

  • How can I mount an AES-128 encrypted DMG file using the NTFS file system under Windows XP?

    I found HFSExplorer, which can handle encrypted DMG files, but it only supports HFS, and the DMG I want to open is NTFS. I can't just use any image mounter since the DMG file is encrypted, and I don't want to need to copy it over to my main hard drive first. (The DMG is on an external hard drive.) If copying it is the only way, however, I'd be willing to settle for that, but I'd rather just leave it on the external hard drive in an encrypted form.

  • How do I make Mail.app quit after iCal sends an alert?

    iCal uses a built in script file to email reminders through Mail.app. It works great, but I don't use Mail.app for my main email account, just for sending calendar notifications. So, Mail.app opens and sends the alert, but then it stays open. I've tried to edit the applescript file to make it quit Mail, but that doesn't seem to work. Can anyone offer some advice? Thanks :-)
