• How to partition hard drive that has no os installed?

  I have 500 GB hard drive. The laptop came with windows 7 pre installed in it. Now as I am installing Windows 8, I have deleted the C drive. So I have 460 GB free unused space where I can install Windows 8. But the Windows 8 installer does not give me any option to partition the 460 GB. The only option available are "Refresh" and "Load driver" or just selecting the 460 GB HDD and installing Windows 8 in it. So how can I partition this 460 GB before I install Windows 8 in it? Edit: Can you suggest me some tools that partition the hard drive and RUN independently (as I do not have any OS installed) from a USB ?

• What happens with the Guest OS's on ESXi in the event of a power failure?

  Many small businesses would prefer to let their server drop on power failure than to pay even $100 for a cheap UPS. It's often difficult to convince them of the value of something like that; it's why they like ESXi. It's free, they can save a lot of cash by putting a bunch of linux servers on one machine, and then I get paid. :) If the ESXi server experiences a power outage, it is set to come back on automatically when power is restored. What happens with the guest OS's? Ideally I would like them to all come online again as well, assuming they were on when power was lost, but I see no option for choosing this. I don't want to yank power to the system just to try it out, of course. I'm sure someone knows what happens by default, and perhaps how to make my system to work as I would wish.

  Recently, I have made a number of USB sticks to install OS's (several Linux flavors, BSD, Windows) from, on machines that didn't have CD drives. Now, I would prefer to not overwrite the install USB sticks all the time, since it's handy to have them, but neither do I want to pile up USB sticks that I only need every 6 months. It would be great to have a bootable USB stick that fires up some minimal system, lets you choose an ISO image and then reboots from there. How would I go about this? Do I use some minimal Linux? Is there some kind of modified / specialized boot loader? Can I set up GRUB to do this? Should I use virtualization?

• Mac OS X 10.5/6, authenticate against by NIS or LDAP when both servers have your username

  We have an organization-wide LDAP server and a department-only NIS server. Many users have accounts with the same name on both servers. Is there any way to get Leopard/Snow Leopard machines to query one server, and then the other, and let the user log in if his username/password combination matches at least one record? I can get either NIS authentication or LDAP authentication. I can even enable both, with LDAP set as higher priority, and authenticate using the name and password listed on the LDAP server. However, in the last case, if I set the LDAP domain as higher-priority in Directory Utility's search path and then provide the username/password pair listed in the NIS record, then my login is rejected even though the NIS server would accept it. Is there any way to make the OS check the rest of the search path after it finds the username?

  I have a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X Lion which has a single local user (the local administrator account that I setup) and then the domain user setup on the laptop. I've gone into "Login Options" under System Preferences Users & Groups and set the option "Display login window as: Name and password". When the laptop first boots, it has automatically selected the local admin account, and I don't see where I have the option to change users. However, when if I log into that local administrator account and then log out (without rebooting) it will allow me to enter the user and password.

How do I get the best quality?(Even if the difference is in fact so small it's neglectible) By making the music louder in my music player, game or other sound-producing software program. By raising the volume at the Operating System level (for instance, by clicking the 'speaker' icon on the windows bar and turning the volume up) By turning the volume up on the Amplifier or Speakers that are attached to your computer, and thus changing the volume on the 'hardware' Does programs vs OS matter?   How can a program running on a CPU (mostly OS) access other PC hardware? Such as Graphic card, HDD and so? From what I read, in DOS, this was done using BIOS calls, specifically the INT instruction. But, the INT instruction should only jump to the certain space in RAM. So how can some program stored in RAM access other computer hardware, when the CPU can only access RAM, and receive interrupts? Does Windows use INT instructions as well, or is there a new way to communicate with the hardware?

• How to upgrade OS on Mac Mini with external USB Drive?

  We have a G4 Mac Mini, circa 2005, running Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, and we want to upgrade to 10.5 Leopard. We have a Leopard install disk, but the optical drive in this mini is broken. So we transferred the install disk image to a USB HDD, but now we can't figure out how to boot off it. From what I've read in Mac forums, some PPC Macs, including some G4's, have been able to boot from USB, even though it sounds like this wasn't officially supported, and it may well depend on the specific model of USB drive and Mac. My Mac says CPU is "PowerPC G4 (1.2)" and Boot ROM is "4.8.9f4". I was hoping I might just find somebody here who had that same Mac Mini and find out if they could make it work. I'd especially like to know any specifics about the USB drive they found success with. Any insights at all would be appreciated. Thanks.

  I have a problem with regards to my nVidia driver not running on 64-bit. I decided to install both 32-bit and 64-bit on my ASUS K42JC (4GB RAM upgrade) in order to function the nVidia on the 32-bit. My question is, how could I make my laptop run on either 32-bit or 64-bit OS. What options I am suppose to use, a single, double, or triple partition? From an answer: Well. When I installed the nVidia driver from either the ASUS site and the prescribed driver from NVIDA site via System Requirements Lab, both ended up freezing my laptop to the point when the desktop is about the finish booting. I have tried three(3) times reformatting and trying to fix the problem. Yet no use. I filed a ticket to the Asus support but for now no replies yet. But this bothers me, why wouldn't the nVidia run on 64bit yet it runs perfectly on 32bit.

  I am trying to use ifconfig to turn on broadcast on my loopback interface. It currently reads: lo0: flags=8049<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 16384 As you can see, no broadcast address! :( :( :( I tried this on OS/X but it did not work and it did not give any error or feedback: ifconfig lo0 broadcast 127.255.255.255 Any guru would know that? I have one server that sends one packet. I have two clients running on the same machine as the server. I need them to pick up the packet WITHOUT having to force the server to send it twice.

• How can I get ssh-agent working over ssh and in tmux (on OS X)?

  I have a private key set up for my github account, the passphrase to which is, I believe, stored in OS X's keychain. I certainly don't have to type it in when I open a terminal window and enter ssh [email protected]. However, when I'm running bash over an ssh session, or locally inside a tmux session, I have to type in the passphrase every single time I attempt to ssh to github. This question suggests that a similar problem exists with screen, but I don't really understand the issue well enough to fix it in tmux. There's also this page which includes a fairly complicated solution, but for zsh.   Having a MacBook Pro 13" I find myself trying to maximize the screen real estate constantly which have led me to put the dock at the right hand corner of the screen. Now in an attempt to save a few more pixels I decided to give autohiding of the dock a go and ran into a problem that have plagued me all night... When you toggle the switch to automatically hide the dock you get stuck with a small delay before it appears when hovering the edge of the screen. I have learnt that this is one of the many design principles Apple have put in use. In this case it appears to be their mission to save me from seeing the dock those few times when it's not intentional to touch the screens edge. In Windows there was a way to tweak this setting to have the menubar appear instantly by altering some registry value. Is there some way I can do this in Mac OS X?

  I remember from my Windows XP days that there was a utility that would let me re-size non-re-sizable windows. Is there something like that on OS X? I'm using PandoraJam and it is sort of iframing the pandora player. Pandora has recently changed the size of the player and PandoraJam has not caught up. I can hit the green zoom button but that changes it to a much bigger player with ads. It would be nice if there was a utility that would just let me force-resize it.   I've set up my OS X server as an open directory master first, then (experimenting), I've changed it to standalone server, then set it back as an open directory master again. Now, all the default groups I saw before are gone (Domain Administrators, Domain users etc). Do you know how to restore these groups? Note that the groups are gone only from the Workgroup Manager UI. They do seem to be still there otherwise. id -G gives the usual list of groups. If I create an account and makes its primary group 'staff', Workgroup Manager shows all the inherited groups properly (but not on the main list). If I create an account and associate it to a new group I just created, then the account has no inherited groups...

• Any FTP clients for Mac OS X that support upload via temporary filename?

  Hi, does anybody know of a FTP client (for Mac OS X) that supports uploading to a temporary filename? When overwriting a file on the server, most FTP clients first empty the file and then proceed to upload new content. (Which is how FTP is supposed to work, so everything is fine.) However, what I would like to see is that the FTP client uploads content to a temporary file and once all the content is on the server, replaces original file. This is good feature, because existing file is upgraded almost instantaneously; otherwise, it would be "broken" while the upload is still in progress. On Windows, this feature is available in WinSCP, but I have not found any options for Mac, so far. Any recommendations?

• What determines the time to first ping response in an OS?

  When a server (say Windows, Linux) is rebooted, it will take some time to respond to ping. I'm assuming that the software firewall has to be up before pings will be returned as there might be a setting to disable ping responses. Everyone knows that Windows and Linux have have totally different architectures so lets treat them separately. The answer I'm looking for is "After XXX is running, pings will be returned." It would be helpful to know where in the boot order this is too. i.e. at the start or end. I ask because we get questions from a customer about why it takes so long to respond to ping after creating a Virtual Machine. I'm sure this is just an artefact of the OS boot behaviour.

  I'm running PHP 5.4 on OS X which allows me to set up a virtual server for any directory, using this Terminal command: php -S localhost:8000 This will then set up http://localhost:8000 which works great, but what I would like to do is share this server with the instance of Windows that I have running through VMWare in order to test in Internet Explorer. I was wondering if this is possible and if it is, how do I go about setting it up? Currently trying to visit http://localhost:8000 gives me 'This page cannot be displayed'. I'd really appreciate any help that you can give me on this as I don't have much experience with virtual machines/networking. Thanks in advance.

• How can I share data from a Samsung Wave Mobile phone with the Mac OS?

  This is driving me up the wall just a bit. I have a new Samsung Wave mobile phone. It is running the Bada OS. The mobile phone does not come with anyone software for the Mac. The Kies desktop interface is only available for Windows. I did try installing the Kies software in a VM with Parallels 5 but it did not detect the phone connected via USB. I tried using Bluetooth file exchange on the Mac; it lets me browse the file system on the Wave phone but not actually see any of the media files; I just get empty directory views. But I am able to access files using media sharing with the Wave phone and my PS3. So what would be a Mac desks top app that can be used a media sharing browser?

  I had some serious lag to resolve website address and sometimes things simply wouldn't load (pages kept loading for 5+ minutes without even a timeout error). So I had setup a local dns server/cache using BIND on Leopard and Snow Leopard. Now that I have Lion, i have the same problem, but the instructions no longer apply to Lion and I can't find a way to do it. Has anyone attempted to do this? Are there viable alternatives for DNS servers on OS X 10.7? For those who are wondering I already tried several external DNS server. Only my computer has this issue on the network.

• Is memcached pre-installed with Xcode on OS X?

  The answer seems to be yes, according to Apple's documentation. To make sure I'm not hallucinating, I checked Apple's developer tools documentation. Yes, memcached is supported and documented by Apple: Apple Developer Library : memcached(1) Apparently, memcached is installed with Xcode since at least 10.6 onwards. The reason I'm asking this is that on the Web and on SO there are lots people asking how to install memcached on OS X but curiously no one seems to mention that the easiest way to do so is to simply install Xcode via the AppStore (or using a DMG). All the answers given involves using homebrew or some other complicated way to install memcached from source. Is there any compelling reason why the Apple shipped memcached is not good enough? I don't see any advantages of compiling and installing memcached from source since there's an Apple supported version.
