• Problem about socket communication

  I have two separate socket projects in VS.NET. One of them is sender, other one is receiver. After starting receiver, i send data from sender. Although send method returns 13 bytes as successfully transferred, the receiver receives 0 (zero). The receiver accepts sender socket and listens to it. But cannot receive data. Why? P.S. : If sender code is put in receiver project, receiver can get data, as well.

• Enable Query Strings in Code Igniter

  Hey, I am trying to implement Twitter's OAuth into my Code Igniter web application at which the callback URL is /auth/ so once you have authenticated with Twitter you are taken to /auth/?oauth_token=SOME-TOKEN. I want to keep the nice clean URL's the framework provides using the /controller/method/ style of URL but I want to enable query strings as well, there will only ever be one name of the data oauth_token so it's ok if it has to be hard coded. Any ideas? I have tried tons of the things people are saying to do, but none work :( PS: I'm using the .htaccess method of URL rewriting.

• Are there any issues with MySQL's i18n(indic language) support ?

  Hi All, We're evaluating MySQL and PostgreSQL for building our indic language web application which will use MySQL or PostgreSQL. One of my colleagues mentioned that MySQL had issues with i18n. I mostly come from the Oracle world and although I've played a lil with MySQL, I don't know enough to know that there are issues with its i18n support. Does anyone know issues with MySQL's i18n support and if PostgreSQL would be better placed for building an application with indic language support(kannada, telugu, tamil, etc) ? Just so you know, we're going to be using J2EE to build this application and we will be using JDBC drivers to access the DB. P.S : Will anything change if we were to use Rails to build the app instead of J2EE ? Thank you,

• Is naming a software product the same as a book legally problematic?

  I came up with a name for a software product I'm developing. It's composed of two common English words put together (for example, Firefox, Silverlight, etc.). I Googled the name to see if it was being used by any other software product before committing to it. After finding none, I did notice that there is a book published around 60 years ago, by that same name. Would it be legally problematic to name my software product as such, or does it being a software product vs a book make it irrelevant? PS - I know this isn't really a programming question, but naming is related to software development, isn't it? ;) PPS - How do companies like Microsoft get away with naming things "Windows" and "Office"? Or are they just legally called "Microsoft Windows" and "Microsoft Office"? Do developer names always precede software product names? Would naming a software product "Jones Office" be illegal?

• Asp.net Script manager conflicting with button

  Hi there. I'm working on an asp.net app and I have some controls that are created dinamically on the OnInit event. One of that controls is an asp button that has been working fine until now. When I add a ScriptManager to my page, that same button is unnable to postback. It's only working if a take the ScriptManager out. has anything like this ever appened to somebody else? Am I invalidating the page somehow? • Strange error with CreateCompatibleDC

  Maybe this is a foolish question, I can't see why I can not get a DC created in the following code : HBITMAP COcrDlg::LoadClippedBitmap(LPCTSTR pathName,UINT maxWidth,UINT maxHeight) { HBITMAP hBmp = (HBITMAP)::LoadImage(NULL, pathName, IMAGE_BITMAP, 0, 0, LR_LOADFROMFILE | LR_CREATEDIBSECTION); if (!hBmp) return NULL; HDC hdc = (HDC)GetDC(); HDC hdcMem = CreateCompatibleDC(hdc); if (!hdcMem) { DWORD err = GetLastError(); } ... ... ... The bitmap hBmp is loaded fine and hdc has a valid value. But the call to CreateCompatibleDC() returns a NULL pointer. Then, GetLastError() returns 0 ! Anybody can guess what's going on here , please ? PS : There are no memory allocations or GDI routines called before this one...so I think memory leaks should be ruled out.

• 'Lexical' scoping of type parameters in C#

  I have 2 scenarios. This fails: class F<X> { public X X { get; set; } } error CS0102: The type 'F' already contains a definition for 'X' This works: class F<X> { class G { public X X { get; set; } } } The only logical explanation is that in the second snippet the type parameter X is out of scope, which is not true... Why should a type parameter affect my definitions in a type? IMO, for consistency, either both should work or neither should work. Any other ideas? PS: I call it 'lexical', but it probably is not not the correct term.

  When I bind a function to a checkbox element like: $("#myCheckbox").click( function() { alert($(this).is(":checked")); }); The checkbox changes it checked attribute before the event is triggered, it's it normal behavior, thus giving and inverse result. However, when I do: $("#myCheckbox").click(); The checkbox changes it checked attribute after the event is triggered. My question is, is there a way to trigger the click event from jquery like a normal click would do (first scenario)? PS: I've already tried with trigger('click');

  How does ML perform the type inference in the following function definition: let add a b = a + b Is it like C++ templates where no type-checking is performed until the point of template instantiation after which if the type supports the necessary operations, the function works or else a compilation error is thrown ? i.e. for example, the following function template template <typename NumType> NumType add(NumType a, NumType b) { return a + b; } will work for add<int>(23, 11); but won't work for add<ostream>(cout, fout); Is what I am guessing is correct or ML type inference works differently?   I am looking for a library that, ideally, has the following features: implements hierarchical clustering of multidimensional data (ideally on similiarity or distance matrix) implements support vector machines is in C++ is somewhat documented (this one seems to be hardest) I would like this to be in C++, as I am most comfortable with that language, but I will also use any other language if the library is worth it. I have googled and found some, but I do not really have the time to try them all out, so I want hear what other people had for experiences.   This question is an updated version of a previous question I have asked on here. I am new to client-server model with SQL Server as the relational database. I have read that public access to SQL Server is not secure. If direct access to the database is not a good practice, then what kind of layer should be placed between the server and the client? Note that I have a desktop application that will serve as the client and a remote SQL Server database that will provide data to the client. The client will input their username and password in order to see their data. I have heard of terms like VPN, ISA, TMG, Terminal Services, proxy server, and so on. I need a fast and secure n-tier architecture. P.S. I have heard of web services in front of the database. Can I use WCF to retrieve, update, insert data? Would it be a good approach in terms of security and performance?

  Hi, quick question. Is there any way to (easily) retrieve the parent layout of a widget in Qt? PS: QObject::parent() won't work, for logical reasons. EDIT: I'm positive the widget has a parent layout, because I added it to a layout earlier in the code. Now, I have many other layouts in the window and while it is possible for me to keep track of them, I just want to know if there is an easy and clean way to get the parent layout. EDIT2: Sorry, "easy and clean" was probably not the best way of putting. I meant using the Qt API. • How to remove flash cache on a web site periodically

  I'm using a flash rotating banner in my website which takes images and descriptions from an XML file. I do changes to my XML very often... but in my local machine, the banner takes a day or two to get updated. Although I can clear my local machine's cache, the problem still remains for other users who visit my web page.. is there a programmatic way in flash or in html to overcome this problem ? Maybe a server configuration? Please help me with this.. • While Loop Taking Alot of CPU Usage

  I am creating a keystroke logger for my personal interest, as well wanting to know how to capture and use them as functions (like key shortcuts). I got the code to learn how keylogger and GetAsyncKeyState() work: http://www.rohitab.com/discuss/index.php?showtopic=9931 I got it to run under Code::Blocks, but the weirdest things is that when I check my task manager, my CPU Usage rises to 100%. When I close the program, it goes back down, and goes back up to 100 when I turn it back on. I presume it's because of the infinite while loop, constantly checking for inputs, but I wanna know if there's anyway to decrease the CPU usage, without losing function. P.S How would I make a key shortcut? Like press (Ctrl + E) to make the program exit?

What top tips would you give for designing/documenting a GUI? It would be particularly useful to hear about widgets you designed to cram readable information into as little screen real-estate as possible. I'm going to roll this off with one of my own: avoid trees (e.g. Swing's JTree) unless you really can't avoid it, or have a unbounded hierarchy of stuff. • Problem with superfish submenu being trimmed by content in Firefox

  Greetings, I have a problem which would seem to involve some kind of z-index issue, but for a change it's in everything except IE. If you take a look at http://cougar.motivo.com.au/ in anything except Internet Explorer and hover over the last menu item "Contact Us" you can se what I'm referring to. Basically the supersub menu appears to be being trimmed by the width of the element below it. You can see via the source that I've tried setting z-indexes & position:relative, but at this point I'm stumped. Any and all input would be gratefully received :) P.S. I am aware that there are still a couple of issues in IE6. I am yet to have the pleasure of addressing those (groans).

It should be somewhat similar to an SVN, however, since the server doesn't support SVN, we'll need another means of doing sort of the same thing. Any ideas about what's wrong with the code would be helpful. However if I change the continent a second time I receive an error: Specified argument was out of the range of valid values.Parameter name: The DataValueField of ValueField was not found in the Columns collection. • Writing a C Macro

  Hi, I have to write a macro that get as parameter some variable, and for each two sequential bits with "1" value replace it with 0 bit. For example: 10110100 will become 10000100. And, 11110000-00000000 11100000-100000000 I'm having a troubles writing that macro. I've tried to write a macro that get wach bit and replace it if the next bit is the same (and they both 1), but it works only for 8 bits and it's very not friendly... P.S. I need a macro because I'm learning C and this is an exercise i found and i couldn't solve it myself. i know i can use function to make it easily... but i want to know how to do it with macros. • Weird problem, with ghostscript and pdf files.

  Hello, am using ghostscript to create pdf file from postscript file. My PS file, doesn't have orientation instructions, so when I want to create landscape pdf file, I'm using ghostscript to rotate the page. The problem is, that ghostscript rotates only the first page, and when my pdf file is more than 1 page, the others, are not rotated correctly.
