• Log4j - Logging to multiple log files based on the project modules

  Consider this scenario: I have a project with two modules and one common module as below (the package structure): com.mysite.moduleone com.mysite.moduletwo com.mysite.commonmodule In the above, the commonmodule classes can be used by other two modules. The question: I need to configureLog4J such a way that the log messages from moduleone and moduletwo goes to different log file. I can always do this using using category. But the real problem is when I want to log the messages from the commonmodule also. So, when the commonmodule classes are called from moduleone the commonmodule log messages should go to the moduleone log file. If the commonmodule is accesse from moduletwo the commonmodule log messages should go to moduletwo log file. Is it possible to configure Log4J in this fashion? Any comments? PS: I think I made my question clear. If any confusion, leave a comment, wil try to clear it. :)

• What are the lesser known but cool data structures ?

  There a some data structures around that are really cool but are unknown to most programmers. Which are they? Everybody knows linked lists, binary trees, and hashes, but what about Skip lists, Bloom filters for example. I would like to know more data structures that are not so common, but are worth knowing because they rely on great ideas and enrich a programmer's tool box. PS: I am also interested on techniques like Dancing links which make interesting use of the properties of a common data structure. EDIT: Please try to include links to pages describing the data structures in more detail. Also, try to add a couple of words on why a data structures is cool (as Jonas Kölker already pointed out). Also, try to provide one data-structure per answer. This will allow the better data structures to float to the top based on their votes alone.

• jquery - strange behavior in IE..

  I have an input field where name='id' <input type='hidden' name="id" /> While jquery lib works fine in Chrome, it fails in IE. It works when I change from id to idfield - but our server code breaks since it expects the form with element key id. Is there a work around for this? • samba windows gvim & "READ ERRORS"

  I have a samba server on my embedded box. I was planning to use it to edit files easily. However when I open files on my windows machine, I get read errors. I have tried textpad, gvim and kate(andLinux). On gvim I first get "write error in swap file" and it is replaced by "[READ ERRORS]". If I access the same file through pyNeighborhood (ubuntu) I can read/write/delete etc. Samba security is set to share and guest user is root. Also if I move the file to my ubuntu samba server, I get no problems. Any ideas? PS: I am using smbd 3.0.25b.

• Convert string to integer and multiply two integers

  I have a big time trying to either convert a string into a integer or multiply two integers. I can't convert the string into integer because it's resulting me into a boolean (when I'm using var_dump). I can convert the other integer in string, but I'm unable to multiply it.   tldr; Can you identify devices on your network as an iPhone OS device easily? Can you send push notifications to devices identified as using the iPhone OS on your network without a a target app? Is is possible to identify which devices on a network are using the iPhone OS? With this information, is it possible to send push notifications to these devices? From my understanding, your application server will contact APNs, which will contact the users. So, the above would be impossible. Can someone confirm this for me? Thanks, P.S.

• Silverlight data-driven application with NHibernate

  Hi Guys, this is more of a subjective Question, but I'll ask it anyway. I'm about to develop a very data-centric application that has to run inside the browser. The frontend will be Silverlight, backed by a Fluent NHibernate service that runs server side. The problem here is: Wherever I look for data-driven silverlight app I wind up finding Silverlight RIA services examples, but nothing on how to build this without some ADO.NET stuff involved. I have little to no knowledge in WCF so far, but from the limited research I did it seems like WCF is pretty much the only way to let the client talk to the server. Are there any tutorials/best practices on how to write a Silverlight MVVM app that provides CRUD for a non-EF database? Suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks PS: I can't use .NET remoting. The backend has to run on IIS6 :(

  Hi All, I have a bunch of .eps files (CMYK) that I need to convert to .jpg (RGB) files. The following command sometimes gives me under or over saturated .jpg images, when compared to the source EPS file: $cmd = "convert -density 300 -quality 100% -colorspace RGB ".$epsURL." -flatten -strip ".$convertedURL; Is there a smarter way to do this such that the converted image will have the same qualities as the source EPS file?   I defined the Scheme procedure to return another procedure with 2 parameters : (define (smooth f) (?(x dx)(/ (+ (f (- x dx)) (f x) (f (+ x dx))) 3.0))) if i run this procedure with sin procedure with 2 arguments 10 and 0.0001 then it is ok ((smooth sin) 10 0.0001) ==> -0.544021109075966 if i run this procedure recursively, then it has error ((smooth (smooth sin)) 10 0.0001) ==> procedure expects 2 arguments, given 1: #<promise:temp6> So can anyone tell me where is my problem? • Keyboard event issue

  Hello guys! I have to capture the following keyboard event in a TextBox - SHIFT + 8(on the numpad). This also means the NumLock will be on. When I try the following, nothing is printed: private void textBox1_KeyDown(object sender, KeyEventArgs e) { if (e.Shift && e.KeyCode == Keys.NumPad8) Console.WriteLine("SHIFT + UP"); } But CTRL + 8(on the numpad) is working. private void textBox1_KeyDown(object sender, KeyEventArgs e) { if (e.Control && e.KeyCode == Keys.NumPad8) Console.WriteLine("CTRL + UP"); } Could someone explain me, why SHIFT + 8 isn't fired, but CTRL + 8 is working? P.S. I wrote + UP, because the user wants to navigate with the numpad arrows and the SHIFT key, but his NumLock will also be on. That's why I catch Keys.NumPad8. All the best, Petar

• Using setSourceType with image picker up hides status bar

  I am pretty sure this is a bug but I thought I would check. I used the camera overlay to add a button so that on the iphone a user can switch from the camera view to the photo library. When button is taped the source type switches fine but the status bar is missing from the photo library. Throughout the rest of that session the status bar remains missing from all views evet thougth isStatusBarHidden reports NO. This is how the camera overlay view is created if (cameraOverlayView == nil) { [[NSBundle mainBundle] loadNibNamed:@"CameraOverlayView" owner:self options:nil]; } If camera is available this is when I set source type and add overlay if ([UIImagePickerController isSourceTypeAvailable:UIImagePickerControllerSourceTypeCamera]) { [imagePicker setSourceType:UIImagePickerControllerSourceTypeCamera]; [imagePicker setCameraOverlayView:cameraOverlayView]; } Here is the action statement to change source type. (IBAction)selectImage; { [imagePicker setSourceType:UIImagePickerControllerSourceTypePhotoLibrary]; } If I don't tap the button on the overlay there is no problem with the status bar. PS. I did submit a bug report on this.

• Security in API authentication

  We are in the process of revamping our server side API, and we need to manage security. Our current model requires that a credentials object (containing user, password, and pin) be included in each method invocation. Our development team, however, has decided that we should have session objects instead (which is fine by me), but the new credentials are just a GUID. This is very different from what I've seen in other APIs in our industry, so I'm a bit concerned about how secure the new model will be. I asked them if they had analyzed both alternatives, and they said they haven't. Does anyone know if there're any clear advantages, disadvantages, risks, etc. of using a set of credentials versus just one element (complex as it may be)? PS: the communication channel would be secure in either case, and it's separate from this particular topic

• How should I build a privacy drop-down (select) menu?

  I'm trying to build something similar to Facebook's privacy selection menu, except without the 'custom' option. It will only list a few options such as 'show to all', 'show to friends only', or 'completely hidden'. Right now I'm thinking of using simple JavaScript to change a hidden input field to the new value they click on, so if they clicked on the division for 'show to friends only' it would change the corresponding field, say 'email_privacy', to 1. Is there a better way to do this or am I pretty much on track? P.S. I am not planning on using a select element, I was planning on building a custom drop-down menu using CSS since select elements are so highly non-customizable. I'm doing it this way to save space, rather than having this massive selection menu at the right which takes up a bunch of space. Note: I'm not really interested in using jQuery, that's just extra libraries and crap that I don't want to load. I can do it in JavaScript just as easily so I might as well use that.

  I have a text column varchar(4000) with text: 'aaabbaaacbaaaccc' and I need to remove all duplicated chars - so only one from sequence left: 'abacbac' It should not be a function, Procedure or CLR - Regex solution. Only true SQL select. Currently I think about using recursive WITH clause with replace 'aa'-'a', 'bb'-'b', 'cc'-'c'. So recursion should cycle until all duplicated sequences of that chars would be replaced. DO you have another solution, perhaps more Permormant one? PS: I searched through this site about different replace examples - they didnt suit to this case.

• How do I write my own desktop sharing application in java ?

  Hello I want write my own desktop sharing application in Java. The application should have some very default features: Capture screen; Allow a remote connected user to click / edit fields. I was thinking to use Java Robot class for mouse movements / key pressing. The problem is i don't know what screen capture strategy to use. Should I make sequentially screen captures (on the hosting computer) every second, and send those captures with UDP via network, so that the clients can intercept the data-grams ? Isn't this a little overkill for the network ? What other strategies are available ? (Except trying an already existing app). PS: If necessary I can even write native code using JNI (still that's the last thing I planning to do).

  I working with the latest draft of the twitter annotations api. An example bit of data looks like status { annotations : [ {myAnnotationType:{myKey:myValue}}, {someoneElsesAnnotationType:{theirKey:theirValue}}, ] } now i want to check a status to see if it has an annotation with myAnnotationType in it. If annotations was a hash instead of an array I could just write var ann = status.annotations.myAnnotationType. • django: how to interconnect various logical pieces of a webpage

  Hi, everyone. I'm just starting with django, so sorry for a possibly stupid question. Imagine, I have a webpage with 3 logical pieces: content, dynamic menu, banners. It seems ok to me to have a template with something like: {% include "banners.html" %} {% include "menu.html" %} {% include "content.html" %} But then, how do I do it? Every piece has its separate logic in a separate view in its' separate app. How do I trigger execution of all three views and render all three templates? P.S. Is there a sourceforge-like site for django apps where I could take a look at how people are doing stuff in real projects?

• Finding Errant Output to System.out in Large Java Program

  Hi, We have a large java code base [~1 M Lines]. Buried (somewhere) in the code base is some old debug output to System.out that we want to remove (its cluttering things up). The problem is: out code base is so large that we can't easily find where the output is coming from. What we want is a way to see where System.out.println is getting called from (like a stack trace from an exception or some such). Its not suitable to debugging -- the errant output is coming from some errant thread somewhere etc. Any ideas on how to track the source of this errant output down? PS: 99.99% of calls to System.out are legit, and we have thousands of them, so simply searching the code base for System.out calls is not a solution!

• Suggestion for R/LaTeX table creation package

  I've been using xtable package for a long time, and looking forward to writting my first package in R... so I reckon that if I have some "cool" idea that's worth carying out, there's a great chance that somebody got there before me... =) I'm interested in functions/packages specialized for LaTeX table creation (through R, of course). I bumped on quantreg package which has latex.table function. Any suggestion for similar function(s)/package(s)? P.S. I'm thinking about building a webapp in which users can define their own presets/templates of tables, choose style, statistics, etc. It's an early thought, though... =)

• AbsoluteTime with numeric argument behaves strangely.

  This is strange: DateList@AbsoluteTime[596523] returns {2078, 7, 2, 2, 42, 9.7849} But DateList@AbsoluteTime[596524] returns {1942, 5, 26, 20, 28, 39.5596} The question: What's going on? Note that AbsoluteTime with a numeric argument is undocumented. (I think I now know what it's doing but figured this is useful to have as a StackOverflow question for future reference; and I'm curious if there's some reason for that magic 596523 number.) • Cucumber works on Eclipse but not on Jenkins

  I am successfully running Cucumber test on my java/maven eclipse project. But when I add my project do Jenkins I always get the following error "cucumber.runtime.CucumberException: No features found at []". I read in this thread Setting cucumber-jvm options in Maven from the command line that: ...tests are running in separate JVM, so you need to specify that system property in the test plugin configuration (i.e. surefire or failsafe plugin config in your pom.xml) But I am not quite sure how to do this. Can anyone help me? PS: I am using "cucumber-java" and "cucumber-junit" dependencies.
