  • NSXMLParser Memory Allocation Efficiency for the iPhone

    - by Staros
Hello, I've recently been playing with code for an iPhone app to parse XML. Sticking to Cocoa, I decided to go with the NSXMLParser class. The app will be responsible for parsing 10,000+ "computers", all which contain 6 other strings of information. For my test, I've verified that the XML is around 900k-1MB in size. My data model is to keep each computer in an NSDictionary hashed by a unique identifier. Each computer is also represented by a NSDictionary with the information. So at the end of the day, I end up with a NSDictionary containing 10k other NSDictionaries. The problem I'm running into isn't about leaking memory or efficient data structure storage. When my parser is done, the total amount of allocated objects only does go up by about 1MB. The problem is that while the NSXMLParser is running, my object allocation is jumping up as much as 13MB. I could understand 2 (one for the object I'm creating and one for the raw NSData) plus a little room to work, but 13 seems a bit high. I can't imaging that NSXMLParser is that inefficient. Thoughts? Code... The code to start parsing... NSXMLParser *parser = [[NSXMLParser alloc] initWithData: data]; [parser setDelegate:dictParser]; [parser parse]; output = [[dictParser returnDictionary] retain]; [parser release]; [dictParser release]; And the parser's delegate code... -(void)parser:(NSXMLParser *)parser didStartElement:(NSString *)elementName namespaceURI:(NSString *)namespaceURI qualifiedName:(NSString *)qualifiedName attributes:(NSDictionary *)attributeDict { if(mutableString) { [mutableString release]; mutableString = nil; } mutableString = [[NSMutableString alloc] init]; } -(void)parser:(NSXMLParser *)parser foundCharacters:(NSString *)string { if(self.mutableString) { [self.mutableString appendString:string]; } } -(void)parser:(NSXMLParser *)parser didEndElement:(NSString *)elementName namespaceURI:(NSString *)namespaceURI qualifiedName:(NSString *)qName { if([elementName isEqualToString:@"size"]){ //The initial key, tells me how many computers returnDictionary = [[NSMutableDictionary alloc] initWithCapacity:[mutableString intValue]]; } if([elementName isEqualToString:hashBy]){ //The unique identifier if(mutableDictionary){ [mutableDictionary release]; mutableDictionary = nil; } mutableDictionary = [[NSMutableDictionary alloc] initWithCapacity:6]; [returnDictionary setObject:[NSDictionary dictionaryWithDictionary:mutableDictionary] forKey:[NSMutableString stringWithString:mutableString]]; } if([fields containsObject:elementName]){ //Any of the elements from a single computer that I am looking for [mutableDictionary setObject:mutableString forKey:elementName]; } } Everything initialized and released correctly. Again, I'm not getting errors or leaking. Just inefficient. Thanks for any thoughts!

  • Can a database table be without a primary key?

    - by bodacydo
Can anyone help me understand if a table in a relational database (such as MySQL) can be without a primary key? For example, I could have table day_temperature, where I register temperature and time. I don't see the reason to have a primary key for such a table. Thoughts? Thanks, Boda Cydo.

  • Advice on displaying and allowing editing of data using ASP.NET MVC?

    - by Remnant
I am embarking upon my first ASP.NET MVC project and I would like to get some input on possible ways to display database data and general best practice. In short, the body of my webpage will show data from my database in a table like format, with each table row showing similar data. For example: Name Age Position Date Joined Jon Smith 23 Striker 18th Mar 2005 John Doe 38 Defender 3rd Jan 1988 In terms of functionality, primarily I’d like to give the user the ability to edit the data and, after the edit, commit the edit to the database and refresh the view. The reason I want to refresh the view is because the data is date ordered and I will need to re-sort if the user edits a date field. My main question is what architecture / tools would be best suited to this fulfil my requirements at a high level? From the research I have done so far my initial conclusions were: ADO.NET for data retrieval. This is something I have used before and feel comfortable with. I like the look of LINQ to SQL but don’t want to make the learning curve any steeper for my first outing into MVC land just yet. Partial Views to create a template and then iterate through a datatable that I have pulled back from my database model. jQuery to allow the user to edit data in the table, error check edited data entries etc. Also, my intial view was that caching the data would not be a key requirement here. The only field a user will be able to update is the field and, if they do, I will need to commit that data to the database immediately and then refresh the view (as the data is date sorted). Any thoughts on this? Alternatively, I have seen some jQuery plug-ins that emulate a datagrid and provide associated functionality. My first thoughts are that I do not need all the functionality that comes with these plug-ins (e.g. zebra striping, ability to sort by column using sort glyph in column headers etc .) and I don’t really see any benefit to this over and above the solution I have outlined above. Again, is there reason to reconsider this view? Finally, when a user edits a date , I will need to refresh the view. In order to do this I had been reading about Html.RenderAction and this seemed like it may be a better option than using Partial Views as I can incorporate application logic into the action method. Am I right to consider Html.RenderAction or have I misunderstood its usage? Hope this post is clear and not too long. I did consider separate posts for each topic (e.g. Partial View vs. Html.RenderAction, when to use jQury datagrid plug-in) but it feels like these issues are so intertwined that they need to be dealt with in contect of each other. Thanks

  • Java: error handling with try-catch, empty-try-catch, dummy-return

    - by HH
A searh uses recursively defined function that easily throws exceptions. I have tried 3 ways to handle exeptions: to ignore with an empty-try-catch() add-dummy-return stop err-propagation due to exeption throw a specific except. (this part I don't really understand. If I throw except, can I force it to continue elsewhere, not continuing the old except-thrown-path?) Some exceptions I do not realy care like during execution removed files -exception (NullPointer) but some I really do like unknown things. Possible exceptions: // 1. if a temp-file or some other file removed during execution -> except. // 2. if no permiss. -> except. // 3. ? --> except. The code is Very import for the whole program. I earlier added clittered-checks, try-catches, avoided-empty-try-catches but it really blurred the logic. Some stoned result here would make the code later much easier to maintain. It was annoying to track random exeptions due to some random temp-file removal! How would you handle exceptions for the critical part? Code public class Find { private Stack<File> fs=new Stack<File>(); private Stack<File> ds=new Stack<File>(); public Stack<File> getD(){ return ds;} public Stack<File> getF(){ return fs;} public Find(String path) { // setting this type of special checks due to errs // propagation makes the code clittered if(path==null) { System.out.println("NULL in Find(path)"); System.exit(9); } this.walk(path); } private void walk( String path ) { File root = new File( path ); File[] list = root.listFiles(); //TODO: dangerous with empty try-catch?! try{ for ( File f : list ) { if ( f.isDirectory() ) { walk( f.getAbsolutePath() ); ds.push(f); } else { fs.push(f); } } }catch(Exception e){e.printStackTrace();} } } Code refactored from here.

  • YUI Compressor and .NET Apps

    - by objektivs
I want to use YUI Compressor (the original) and use it as part of typical MS build processes (Visual Studio 2008, MSBuild). Does anyone have any guidance or thoughts on this? For example, good ways for incorporating into project, what to do with existing CSS and JS references, and the like. I am happy to hear on the benefits of YUI Compressor .NET and alternatives but I'm mor einterested in use of the original. Thanks Scott

  • agent-based simulation: performance issue: Python vs NetLogo & Repast

    - by max
I'm replicating a small piece of Sugarscape agent simulation model in Python 3. I found the performance of my code is ~3 times slower than that of NetLogo. Is it likely the problem with my code, or can it be the inherent limitation of Python? Obviously, this is just a fragment of the code, but that's where Python spends two-thirds of the run-time. I hope if I wrote something really inefficient it might show up in this fragment: UP = (0, -1) RIGHT = (1, 0) DOWN = (0, 1) LEFT = (-1, 0) all_directions = [UP, DOWN, RIGHT, LEFT] # point is just a tuple (x, y) def look_around(self): max_sugar_point = self.point max_sugar = self.world.sugar_map[self.point].level min_range = 0 random.shuffle(self.all_directions) for r in range(1, self.vision+1): for d in self.all_directions: p = ((self.point[0] + r * d[0]) % self.world.surface.length, (self.point[1] + r * d[1]) % self.world.surface.height) if self.world.occupied(p): # checks if p is in a lookup table (dict) continue if self.world.sugar_map[p].level > max_sugar: max_sugar = self.world.sugar_map[p].level max_sugar_point = p if max_sugar_point is not self.point: self.move(max_sugar_point) Roughly equivalent code in NetLogo (this fragment does a bit more than the Python function above): ; -- The SugarScape growth and motion procedures. -- to M ; Motion rule (page 25) locals [ps p v d] set ps (patches at-points neighborhood) with [count turtles-here = 0] if (count ps > 0) [ set v psugar-of max-one-of ps [psugar] ; v is max sugar w/in vision set ps ps with [psugar = v] ; ps is legal sites w/ v sugar set d distance min-one-of ps [distance myself] ; d is min dist from me to ps agents set p random-one-of ps with [distance myself = d] ; p is one of the min dist patches if (psugar >= v and includeMyPatch?) [set p patch-here] setxy pxcor-of p pycor-of p ; jump to p set sugar sugar + psugar-of p ; consume its sugar ask p [setpsugar 0] ; .. setting its sugar to 0 ] set sugar sugar - metabolism ; eat sugar (metabolism) set age age + 1 end On my computer, the Python code takes 15.5 sec to run 1000 steps; on the same laptop, the NetLogo simulation running in Java inside the browser finishes 1000 steps in less than 6 sec. EDIT: Just checked Repast, using Java implementation. And it's also about the same as NetLogo at 5.4 sec. Recent comparisons between Java and Python suggest no advantage to Java, so I guess it's just my code that's to blame? EDIT: I understand MASON is supposed to be even faster than Repast, and yet it still runs Java in the end.

  • Django, want to upload eather image (ImageField) or file (FileField)

I have a form in my html page, that prompts user to upload File or Image to the server. I want to be able to upload ether file or image. • Insert unicode strings into CleverCSS

    - by Brian M. Hunt
How can one insert a Unicode string CSS into CleverCSS? In particular, how could one produce the following CSS using CleverCSS: li:after { content: "\00BB \0020"; } I've figured out CleverCSS's parsing rules, but suffice that the permutations I've thought sensible have failed, for example: li: content: "\\00BB \\0020" // becomes content: 'BB 0' EDIT: My other examples and the rest of my post weren't saved. Suffice that I had a longer list of examples that also failed, as did my closing which was something like: I'd be grateful for any thoughts and input. Brian

  • Could it be that the stack size of a Web Service is smaller than that of a Window Application?

    - by mouthpiec
Hi, I have a program that includes a recursive function. This function when executed in a Windows Application works just fine, and when used in a Webservice, it works fine when the webservice is initiated by the VS (it assigns a random port), but this function return a stackoverflow error when the webservice is published. (note that the machine used is the same, hence it is published on my pc). Could it be that the stack size of a Web Service is smaller than that of a Window Application?

  • Rails: Showing the latest deploy date in web app.

    - by Josh Pinter
I'd like to show in our app when the latest production deploy was made, as a means of showing an ongoing commitment to improvement, etc, etc. Off the top of my head I'm thinking of getting a last_updated_at from one of the files, but I'd like to hear other thoughts. What's the best way to get the date of the latest production deploy dynamically? Thanks, Josh

  • UITableView Question. How do I preselect a tableView cell?

    - by dugla
I assumed that the correct way to preselect a cell in a table view was: - (void)selectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath animated:(BOOL)animated scrollPosition:(UITableViewScrollPosition)scrollPosition However it does absolutely nothing. Nadda. For context I am building an iPad app and the tableview is deployed from a Popover ViewController. So the tableView is only visible when deployed. I am currently calling the above method in: - (void)viewDidAppear:(BOOL)animated; Any thoughts? Thanks, Doug

  • What does `const` do when combined with `readonly`?

    - by Byron Sommardahl
The difference between const and readonly is well covered. A const can't be changed and a read only can only be changed in a constructor. But, what happens when you combine the two: public readonly const string how_does_this_behave = "I don't know"; The compiler allows it. But I'm not sure how it behaves from this point on. Thoughts?

  • Amazon EC2 - network issues

    - by Algorist
Hi, We are launching hadoop cluster on amazon ec2 and recently we are having network issues like master unable to connect to slave. We thought the reason is due to amazon throttling the network connections over a limit. So, we tried to establish a connection after a random delay from each slave node. But, that didn't help. Are there any other suggestions? Thank you Bala

  • Why am I losing sessions when running in StateServer mode?

    - by Nick Allen - Tungle139
I have checked the servers (Win Server 2003) application event logs for the following problem http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308097 which doesn't show up. It just appears that sessions drop randomly for random users It's a single server setup, no web farms and no load balancing Even though the issue I point to above doesn't occur in the logs, is it worth increasing the stateNetworkTimeout attribute anyway? The configuration at the moment is simply <sessionState mode="StateServer" cookieless="false" stateConnectionString="tcpip=localhost:42424" timeout="60"/>

    I have a page A containing 2 children iFrames called B and C. A and B are on different domains. On pressing a button in B I would like to change C's URL. Based on the law III of Michael Mahemoff it should work, but in fact it doesn't (js security error). Here is the JS code in B: window.parent.frames['C'].location.href = "http://random.url";

  • Comprehensive and well maintained wiki syntax Parser for PHP

    - by Rowan
I'm looking for a comprehensive and well maintained wiki syntax Parser for PHP, does anybody know of one? I can find some really good parsers for markdown and bbcode but am having trouble with finding a decent wiki parser. I prefer markdown myself, but I'm writing post functions for a CMS and I'd like to give end-users a choice. I thought about downloading a copy of MediaWiki and seeing how they do it, thoughts on this as an option?

  • Should I unit test the model returned by DefaultModelBinder?

    - by Byron Sommardahl
I'm having some trouble unit testing the model returned by DefaultModelBinder. I want to feed in a fake form collection and check the model that it returns to make sure model properties are being bound properly. In my research, I'm not turning up -any- resources on testing the DefaultModelBinder. Maybe I'm missing something. Maybe I shouldn't be testing this part of MVC? Your thoughts?

  • Convert Byte Array into Bitset

    - by Unknown
I have a byte array generated by a random number generator. I want to put this into the STL bitset. Unfortunately, it looks like Bitset only supports the following constructors: A string of 1's and 0's like "10101011" An unsigned long. (my byte array will be longer) The only solution I can think of now is to read the byte array bit by bit and make a string of 1's and 0's. Does anyone have a more efficient solution?

  • looking for automated modeling tool for ASP.Net class diagramming

    - by alchemical
I'm walking into a project with 500+ classes, and am wondering if anyone has had good experiences with automated modeling tools that can import from ASP.Net /C#? It would be a bonus if I could get an automated model based on all the objects called to completely load a single ASP.Net page, with relationships indicating which objects are calling out to which other ones, etc. Thanks for sharing your thoughts or recomendations.
